Abstract:All-optical wavelength conversion for mode-division multiplexing (MDM) signals is theoretically demonstrated by using the four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in a dual-mode fiber. The theoretical model is analyzed for FWM processes between a signal with two MDM channels (LP01 and LP11 modes) and a pump with LP01 and LP11 modes. A method is presented to realize mode-preserving wavelength conversion by simultaneously converting the two signal mode channels to the corresponding idler modes with low crosstalk. The required dispersion performance of the dual-mode fiber is determined, and the fiber structure is optimized to support the MDM wavelength conversion. The 3 dB MDM conversion bandwidth is predicted to be as broad as 69.3 nm with a conversion efficiency of -4.7 dB in a 200-m-long dual-mode fiber. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Multicasting is an important function of wavelength-routing optical communication networks. An all-optical multicasting is presented and experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fibers. An input signal with data information together with a pump are injected into a highly nonlinear fiber and two idlers with new frequencies can be generated through two degenerate FWM processes, which carry the same data information as the input signal. The single input signal is copied to two channels and the pump can also be modulated by this data. The advantage of this scheme consists in the simple configuration, where only a single pump is needed and no other injected lights are required, the uniform powers and tunable wavelengths of the multicasting signals, and the capacity to further increase multicasting channel number.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate degenerate intra-modal four-wave mixing (FWM) processes among orbital angular momentum modes in a family designed ring-core fiber. The designed fiber provide both large effective refractive index difference and low dispersion between multiple modes in the C-band. The signal wave with different modes generated by intra-modal FWM processes was examined using mode de-multiplexed system.

Abstract:We propose a universal approach to provide wide-band multimode four-wave mixing independently of the intrinsic dispersion of the involved waveguide modes. Concepts from quantum mechanics and subwavelength engineering are adopted to design an effective lateral confinement photonic well, i.e., with a graded potential along the waveguide cross section providing flexible control over the modes' confinement. The self-adaptive nature of the waveguide boundary allows different spatial modes with equi-spaced frequencies and shared propagation wavevector, thus automatically fulfilling both energy conservation and wavevector phase matching conditions. Capitalizing on this concept, we show phase-matching among modes separated by 400 nm (bridging from telecom wavelengths to almost 2 mu m), with less than 5% deviation in a remarkably large bandwidth exceeding 300 nm. Furthermore, we also show the flexibility of the proposed approach that can be seamlessly adapted to different technology platforms. This strategy opens a new design space for versatile on-chip nonlinear applications in which the manipulation of energy spacing and phase matching is pivotal, e.g., all-optical signal processing with four-wave mixing, mid-infrared supercontinuum or frequency comb light generation, or Brillouin scattering with selectable phonon energy.

Abstract:Cascaded fiber geometry with the dispersion of each fiber decreasing is proposed to enhance the multiple four-wave mixing（FWM） generation. The first fiber with relatively large dispersion initiates and accelerates the expansion of multiple FWM, and the second fiber with small dispersion would allow the phase-matching process（thus the spectrum broadening）to keep going. Numerical and experimental results show that with this geometry not only multiple FWM expansion can be accelerated, but also the efficiency of multiple FWM products can be effectively improved with shorter fibers.

Abstract:We theoretically present and experimentally demonstrate all-optical wavelength multicasting based on cascaded four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fibers only using a single pump. The cascaded FWM effect is analyzed based on the sum amplitude method, which overcomes the limitation of the number of analyzed idlers, and the performance of the wavelength multicasting is evaluated. By using a continuous wave pump and a pulse train as the signal, multiple-order idlers are experimentally generated and the patterns of 6 multicasting channels are measured. Regardless of the dynamic region of the tunable filter, this method has the potential to realize more multicasting channels, especially when higher pump and signal powers are used.

Abstract:We investigate power-dependent phase-matched four-wave mixing (FWM) in wavelength division multiplexing transmission lines, in which positive and negative dispersion fibers are alternately arranged to manage the dispersion and the dispersion slope. The FWM effect shows power-independent phase matching when the channel power is low. However, it is power dependent at high power. The maximum FWM conversion efficiency is shifted away from the zero channel space in the case of power-dependent phase matching. Optimization of the dispersion system for suppression of the FWM effect is determined.

Abstract:We compare phase matching for four-wave mixing using one, two, three, and four waveguide modes. For the comparison, we use numerical optimizations and an estimate of the generated idler power. We present results for few-mode fibers and nano-rib waveguides and show that for both waveguide types, four-wave mixing bandwidths and idler powers are best for one- and two-mode operation and that four-mode four-wave mixing is not feasible at all. Some nano-rib waveguides support three-mode four-wave mixing, albeit with much reduced bandwidth and reduced idler power.

Abstract:We present a fully time dependent, adiabatic solution, and steady-state analysis for the ultraslow propagation of the nondegenerate four-wave mixing (NDFWM) signal and the weak probe beam in a closely-cycled double-ladder system. Under appropriate (especially power balance) conditions, the two-mode probe and phase-matched NDFWM pulses, after a characteristic propagation length, evolve into a pair of amplitude and group velocity matched pulses. Double transparency for the probe and NDFWM beams can be achieved owing to an efficient one- and three-photon destructive interference involving the NDFWM beam and its back reaction to the probe beam. The forward and backward configurations are investigated in this double-ladder system, and their efficiencies are calculated and compared.

Abstract:Employing optical sources with different wavelength as the input optical signals of WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) system, the phenomenon of four wave mixing in the experiment was analyzed. The amplitudes of four wave mixing in different optical fiber chains were compared. In order to decrease the four wave mixing effect, the fiber with zero dispersion wave close to the signal optical pulse should be put far away from Er-doped fiber amplifier in each amplifier spacing.

Abstract:A novel scheme is proposed to achieve self-pumping wavelength conversion for two differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) signals at different wavelengths through four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in a highly nonlinear optical fiber. By changing the phase modulation depths to pi/2 for both of the DPSK signals, the two signals can be multiplexed to generate a differential quadrature phase-shift keying signal. The simulations and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of phase manipulations for phase-shift keying signals through the FWM process.

Abstract:A fiber loop mirror constructed from two polarization-maintaining dispersion-shifted fibers is proposed and four-wave mixing (FWM) in this loop is theoretically investigated. Our results show that this fiber loop can inherently suppress the pump and signal waves even without optical filtering in continuous-wave or long-pulse cases. The difference between one-pump (nearly degenerate) and two-pump (nondegenerate) FWMs is also presented.

Abstract:We report an all-optical switch based on two-pump four-wave mixing in fibers. The switched signal is not shifted in frequency in this scheme. For different signal wavelengths, the pump wavelengths and powers can be optimized to achieve the best performance. The principle of how to design the switch is discussed in detail. A high extinction ratio of -60 dB is obtained when the pump parameters are optimized by a genetic algorithm that exhibits good convergence property and high computing efficiency. The effect of zero-dispersion wavelength fluctuations along the fiber on the switch is analyzed.

Abstract:A wavelength converter between 1310 and 1550nm bands is presented based on two-pump four-wave mixing (FWM) in a silicon waveguide. The principle of the inter-band wavelength conversion is analyzed. For an arbitrary incident signal, the converted idler wavelength can be freely assigned by suitably setting the two pump wavelengths to completely satisfy the phase-matching condition. Simulation results show that the signal can be flexibly converted between 1310 and 1550 bands. The conversion efficiencies for the signals with different wavelengths are very stable because the FWM phase-matching condition is completely met. Using this two-pump FWM configuration, channel-selective function can also be realized for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) signals by engineering the dispersion profile of the silicon waveguide according to the WDM channel spacing.

Abstract:In recent years, the transmission capacity of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) communication systems has gradually approached to the nonlinear Shannon limit. To meet the increasing demand for communication capacity, space division multiplexing (SDM) has become one of the most concerned technologies. In this paper, the four-wave mixing process (FWM) in fibers is considered from the frequency domain to the mode division multiplexing (MDM) spatial domain under pump depletion and the exact analytical solution to the FWM coupled-mode equations in the space-frequency domain is in detail deduced. The analytical method is verified by numerically calculating the amplitude and phase evolution of the idler wave in non-degenerate four-wave mixing. We discuss three new applications of the analytical solution as follows. 1) Using the phase matching condition we select the terms in the multi-wave coupling equation, and only retain the coupling term that plays a major role. According to the analytical solution in this paper, the phase matching percentage parameter is introduced to determine the FWM coupling terms necessary for multi-wave coupling equations, thus simplifying the multi-wave coupling problem in the study. 2) Combining the analytical solution with the numerical calculation results, we find the initial phase relationship between the output idler and the input guided wave for phase-insensitive FWM, and we provide the analytical expression for a theoretical basis to efficiently design the FWM-based phase arithmetic devices in parallel operating at WDM and MDM systems. 3) We propose a nonlinear compensation algorithm based on analytical solution, which can be used in the few-mode transmission system. The algorithm can fast evaluate or compensate for the fiber nonlinearity by taking into account the pump depletion of the FWM effect. Compared with the traditional digital back propagation (DBP) algorithm, our algorithm has the advantage of lower complexity.

Abstract:We report on a new phase noise detection technique for radio frequency (RF) dissemination based on transferring mode locked laser pulses via optical fiber. The proposed approach is insusceptible to optical fiber interconnection reflection by combining optical frequency comb (OFC) expansion generated by four wave mixing (FWM) in dispersion shifted fiber (DSF) and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technique. An experimental system based on a fiber link of 100km was demonstrated. The measured fractional stability was 1.5×10-13 at 1s and 1.7×10-16 at 1000s.

Abstract:A five-level tripod scheme is proposed for obtaining a high efficiency four-wave-mixing (FWM) process. The existence of double-dark resonances leads to a strong modification of the absorption and dispersion properties against a pump wave at two transparency windows. We show that both of them can be used to open the four-wave mixing channel and produce efficient mixing waves. In particular, higher FWM efficiency is always produced at the transparent window corresponding to the relatively weak-coupling field. By manipulating the intensity of the two coupling fields, the conversion efficiency of FWM can be controlled.
