Abstract:In this study, the magneto-optical properties of large size Bi, Al:DyIG films that was fabricated using pyrolysis process were improved by means of the rapid recurrent thermal annealing method to fine the grain size. A coercivity of about 1500 Oe was obtained. Thin films with very smooth surfaces were produced.

Abstract:Bismuth and aluminum substituted dysprosium iron garnet (Bi, Al:DylG) films were prepared by r.f. sputtering using sol-gel derived targets. The sol-gel derived target was coating on a rigid wafer. The coating was derived from the paste formed by a mixture of powders and viscous sol, which were prepared by the sol-gel process using Bi^3 + ,Dy^3 + ,Fe^3 + , and Al^3 + nitrates as precursors, in appropriate stoichiometric ratios of (Dy_3 - xBi_x )(Fe_5 - yAl_y )O_12 . X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns show that the crystallized films sputtered from the sol-gel derived targets are single phase garnet in nature, indicating that the sol-gel derived target is indeed a feasible alternative to a ceramic target. Magneto-optical measurements show that the prepared garnet film exhibits a strongest Faraday rotation of about 4.5°/μm at a wavelength of 550 nm. It is believed that this sol-gel method for preparing the sputtering targets comprised of multi-component oxides provides a low cost target preparation process.

Abstract:In this work (BiAl)DyIG films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy were prepared on glass substrates by citric acid complex type sol-gel method. The structure and magneto-optical properties were investigated. The Kerr hysteresis loops exhibit good square shape. The figures of merit were 2° and 1.5° at wavelengths of 430 nm and 520 nm respectively. The best crystallization temperature was 675°C.

Abstract:Al, Ga substituted Bi: DyIG films were prepared on glass substrates by a pyrolysis method. Magnetic and magneto-optical properties were investigated in detail. Al or Ga substituted garnet films have good Farady hysteresis loops and high coercivity. The optimum value of Al and Ga in Bi1.2Dy1.8Fe5-xMxO12 films are 1 and 0.7 and the best crystallization temperature 700��C and 675��C, respectively. The Faraday rotation angle of about 8��/��m at a wavelength of 510nm is obtained. The study of optical absorption and figure of merit show that Al or Ga substitution of Fe3+ ions can affect optical absorption and the Farady rotation angle, but the figure of merit does not change evidently.
Study on the read-write performance of Cu doped garnet films for magneto-optical recording

Abstract:The Cu doped Bi, Al:DyIG magneto-optical read-write thin films were prepared onto the glass-substrate by the pyrolysis method, and an investigation on their static read-write performances was also made. The Cu-doped garnet-films have high coercive force and good Faraday hysteresis loops which are beneficial to the stabilization of the written domains. Furthermore, the appropriate addition of Cu can make the grain-size small which is beneficial to the reduction of boundary noise. A He-Ne laser was used in the investigation as the recording source, and it was found that both the read/write and erasing process can be easily performed under certain reading/writing power and certain biased magnetic field when the pulse-width is 50ns.

Abstract:Bi-substituted dysprosium iron garnet films were prepared by sol-gel process, and were annealed for crystallization. The crystallographic structures of garnet films annealed at different temperatures were analyzed by XRD, the film annealed at 650℃ was polycrystalline garnet with no preferred orientation and no impurity crystalline phase. Magnetic and magnetooptical properties were investigated, the film had magnetic anisotropy perpendicular to the film plane, and exhibited strong coercivity of 1100～1600 Oe and high squareness. These films had large figures of merit applicable to magneto-optic storage,with 2 deg. at λ=430 nm and 1.5 deg. at λ=520 nm respectively.
Magneto-optical properties of double layer glass/Al/BiGaDyIG fine grain thin film

Abstract:The magneto-optical properties of a Al/BiGaDyIG double layer fine grain thin film crystallized with a rapid recurrent thermal annealing method has been investigated. The results show that owing to the fineness of the grains and the interface interference enhancement effect when the film thickness within 0.1-1.3��m, the effective Faraday angle of the double layer film is increased 0.25 degree more than that of the common single layer film, and its Faraday angle increases with the increase of times of the rapid recurrent annealing. Meanwhile, a part of the Al+3 ions diffuse into garnet film and substitute the Fe+3 ions in octahedral and tetrahedral sites resulting in a decrease of Curie temperature (140-161��C). These results have great significance for improving the signal-noise-ratio of garnet magneto-optical disk and increasing the recording density.

Abstract:Cu doped Bi,Al:DyIG and Bi,Ga:DyIG thin films have been prepared on glass substrates by sol-gel method. As-deposited films were amorphous, and after annealing polycrystalline magnetic thin films could be obtained. X-ray diffraction pattern showed that the films were garnet phase with no preferred crystal orientation. The Hc value of 7 kOe was obtained in Cu doped Bi, Al:DyIG films, and the Faraday rotation angle was about 7°/µm at the wavelength of 500 nm. An extremely high Hc value of 13 kOe at room temperature has been got in Bi, Ga:DyIG films, and the Faraday rotation angle was 8°/µm at the wavelength of 510 nm for the optimum value of Ga content. The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (Ku) of garnet films on glass substrate resulted from the inverse magnetostriction. The influence of doping and garnet composition on magnetostriction has been studied. The mechanism of increasing coercive force by Cu doping could be attributed to Cu entering lattice sites.

Abstract:The magnetic and magneto-optical properties of a high Bi-substituted BiGaDylG film and an Al/BiGaDylG double layer film crystallized by the rapid recurrent thermal annealing (RRTA) method have been investigated. An average value of the effective Faraday angle of the double layer is about 0.25 ° more than a single garnet film in any thickness from 0.1 to 1.3 μm at 630 nm wavelength. It is suggested that the strong Faraday effect originates from the garnet film's fine grain size and the action of interfacial optical interference. There is a small saturation magnetization of about 796 (A/m) as well as a high coercivity of about 9.5 × 10+4 (A/m) for high Bi-substituted garnet films, whilst the Curie point is reduced from 161 °C to 140 °C by diffusing aluminum atom into the garnet film and substituting the Fe+3 ion in octahedral and tetrahedral sites. The results suggest that Al/BiGaDylG double films are promising candidates for short wavelength magneto-optical recording application.

Abstract:Liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE) is one of the best techniques for the preparation of single crystal garnet films. However, the specific Faraday rotation angle of Yttrium iron garnet (YIG) is small, and its easy magnetization axis is parallel to the film surface. The YIG requires a large external saturation field, which cannot meet the development needs of magneto-optical devices. It is found that Bi-substituted YIG(Bi:YIG) film has a larger specific Faraday angle. By adjusting the easy magnetization axis of Bi: YIG perpendicular to the film surface, the saturation magnetization of Bi: YIG can be reduced, so that it can work under a small external magnetic field. This meets the development needs of miniaturization and energy saving of magneto-optical device. The saturation magnetization of garnet film can be effectively reduced by substituting Ga3+ for YIG crystal, mainly for Fe3+ at the 24d position of its tetrahedron. And the lattice constants of Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG) and YIG are 1.2383 nm and 1.2376 nm, respectively. However, the radius of Bi3+ (10.8 nm) is larger than that of Y3+ (9.0 nm), the lattice mismatch of garnet film increases with the incorporation of Bi3+. In order to neutralize the lattice expansion caused by Bi3+, Tm3+ (8.69 nm) with a radius smaller than that of Y3+ (9.0 nm) is selected. Based on the theoretical analysis of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of garnet film, (BiTm)3(GaFe)5O12 mono-crystalline films with different growth temperatures and different thickness values are grown by LPE on GGG (111) substrates. The experimental results show that when the thickness of epitaxial film is greater than 1 μm, the influence of shape anisotropy on magnetocrystalline anisotropy can be ignored. With the increase of growth temperature, the substitution number of Bi3+ ions decreases gradually, the lattice constant of epitaxial film decreases gradually, and the lattice mismatch first decreases and then increases. Then, the state of compressive stress gradually changes into that of tensile stress. Compared with growth-induced anisotropy, the stress-induced anisotropy is dominant in the change of magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The Verdet constant of (BiTm)3(GaFe)5O12 film is 11.8 × 104 rad/Tm@1064 nm. The results show that the prepared (BiTm)3(GaFe)5O12 mono-crystalline films have great development potential in magneto-optical devices.
Research on Rb-Doped Iron Garnet Films for Magneto-Optical Recording

Abstract:Though Bi, Al substituted Dy-iron garnet films for magneto-optical recording prepared by pyrolysis are nanocrystalline, but because the imhomogeneity of grain boundaries, the sizes of the grains are bigger and imhomogeneity, there is a serious problem of media noise in magneto-optical recording. While Bi, Al substituted Dy-iron garnet films for magneto-optical recording with Rb-doping not only decreased the crystallized temperature, but also decreased the grains sizes. The biggest grain size from 100 nm decreased to about 50 nm, average grains size decreased to about 30 nm, and the homogeneity of the grains was improved. The reflecting of the surface increased because of the doped Rb existed on the surface of the films in form of Rb 2O condensate filling the surface curves. The signal to noise improved. So Rb-doping can greatly improved the magneto-optical characteristics of Dy-iron garnet films for magneto-optical recording.
New Method to Improve the Structure and Magnetic-Optical Properties of Bismuth Garnet-Films

Abstract:A new method to improve the structure and the magnetic-optical (MO) properties of sputtered bismuth garnet films for MO storage has been studied. The method employs high temperature ramp-up rate recurrent annealing as well as quenching in air environment. It results in small grain size (43.0 nm to approximately 30.0 nm), smooth surface, and less bubbles in the garnet film than those with conventional annealing. We discovered that the sample with more recurrent annealing only appeared in garnet phase, and its counterpart with fewer recurrent annealing appeared in garnet phase as well as DyFeO3 phase. Meanwhile the Farady angle and the coercivity increase with the recurrent number due to the increase of volume transitional rate of crystal phase in the film. Using this new method, garnet film has been successfully crystallized with a grain size of about 30.0 nm with excellent magnetic and MO properties.© (1993) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Abstract:The rapid thermal annealing method is used to crystallize a glass/Al/BiGaDyIG double-layer film (where BiGaDyIG denotes dysprosium iron garnet films doped with Bi and Ga); the effective Faraday angle of the double-layer film is about 0.25° greater than that for glass/BiGaDyIG film and about 0.15° greater than that for common glass/BiGaDyIG/Al double films in a wide thickness range; meanwhile the Curie point is decreased because of the aluminium atoms diffusing into the garnet film and substituting at octahedral and tetrahedral Fe3+ sites. The Curie temperature can be adjusted between 161 and 140 °C by means of delay annealing duration. The grain diameter and Faraday angle as functions of heating rate α and number of rapid recurrent annealings N have been presented, and are used to explain the mechanism of effective Faraday angle increase and grain size decrease, suggesting that glass/Al/BiGaDyIG films are promising candidates for blue light magneto-optical recording disks.

Abstract:Bi, Al: DyIG and Cu-doped Bi, Al: DyIG films on glass substrates have been prepared by the pyrolysis method. Magnetic and magneto-optical properties were investigated. Films were annealed at 650-degrees-C for 30 min, then quenched to room temperature within about 60 s. For Cu-doped Bi, Al: DyIG films, the coercive force (H(c)) was increased with the Cu content increasing. The H(c) value of 557.2 kA m-1 was obtained in Cu-doped Bi, Al: DyIG films, and the Faraday rotation angle was about 7-degrees mum - 1 at a wavelength of 500 nm. The increased H(c) was attributed to Cu entering lattice sites.

Abstract:This work is devoted to physical vapor deposition synthesis, and characterisation of bismuth and lutetium-substituted ferrite-garnet thin-film materials for magneto-optic (MO) applications. The properties of garnet thin films sputtered using a target of nominal composition type Bi0.9Lu1.85Y0.25Fe4.0Ga₁O12 are studied. By measuring the optical transmission spectra at room temperature, the optical constants and the accurate film thicknesses can be evaluated using Swanepoel's envelope method. The refractive index data are found to be matching very closely to these derived from Cauchy's dispersion formula for the entire spectral range between 300 and 2500 nm. The optical absorption coefficient and the extinction coefficient data are studied for both the as-deposited and annealed garnet thin-film samples. A new approach is applied to accurately derive the optical constants data simultaneously with the physical layer thickness, using a combination approach employing custom-built spectrum-fitting software in conjunction with Swanepoel's envelope method. MO properties, such as specific Faraday rotation, MO figure of merit and MO swing factor are also investigated for several annealed garnet-phase films.

Abstract:A method of preparing substitution of Bi for yttrium iron gamet (Bi-YIG) and epoxy magneto-optical hybridized films by coprecipition. The images of Transmission electron microscope (TEM) show that the sizes of the Bi-YIG grains decrease obviously with the decrease of heat treatment temperature and time. The functions of Faraday rotation(θ(F))and scattering coefficient (S) with heat treatment temperature and time were investigated in detail. The optimized condition of annealing is that at 650&DEG; C for 4 h. The maximum value of the figure of the magneto-optical merit was about 4.7&DEG;, at the wavelength of 633 nm.

Abstract:Magneto-optic (MO) imaging and sensing are at present the most developed practical applications of thin-film MO garnet materials. However, in order to improve sensitivity for a range of established and forward-looking applications, the technology and component-related advances are still necessary. These improvements are expected to originate from new material system development. We propose a set of technological modifications for the RF-magnetron sputtering deposition and crystallization annealing of magneto-optic bismuth-substituted iron-garnet films and investigate the improved material properties. Results show that standard crystallization annealing for the as-deposited ultrathin (sputtered 10 nm thick, amorphous phase) films resulted in more than a factor of two loss in the magneto-optical activity of the films in the visible spectral region, compared to the liquid-phase grown epitaxial films. Results also show that an additional 10 nm-thick metal-oxide (Bi2O3) protective layer above the amorphous film results in ~2.7 times increase in the magneto-optical quality of crystallized iron-garnet films. On the other hand, the effects of post-deposition oxygen (O2) plasma treatment on the magneto-optical (MO) properties of Bismuth substituted iron garnet thin film materials are investigated. Results show that in the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum (at 532 nm), the O2 treated (up to 3 min) garnet films retain higher specific Faraday rotation and figures of merit compared to non-treated garnet films.
Magnetooptical properties of nanometer crystal giant magnetooptical BiAlDyIG thin film materials

Abstract:Based on the analysis of frequency spectrum of Faraday angle in blue and violet light ranges for BiAlDyIG materials, a fine quality BiAlDyIG thin film was prepared by a pyrolysis method and was crystallized with rapid recurrent thermal annealing. The effective Faraday angle of the recrystallized sample is about 0.5 degree larger than that of the common samples, and it increases with the increase of recurrent times. Meanwhile, the concentration variation of Al3+ ions in octahedral and tetrahedral sites results in a decrease of curie temperature (140-160 °C). These results are very useful for improving the recording density and signal-noise ratio.

Abstract:Rare-earth iron garnet (RIG) thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) property have recently attracted a great deal of attention for spintronic applications. In this paper, thin (YBiLuCa)(3)(FeGe)(5)O-12 garnet films were prepared on gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) substrate by liquid phase epitaxial (LPE) method showing large PMA property. Microstructural properties, chemical composition, magnetic and anomalous Hall effect (AHE) properties of the films were discussed in detail. And we found that the PMA property of this kind of films was mainly controlled by stress-induced anisotropy and growth-induced anisotropy, which were mainly affected by growth temperature. As the growth temperature decreased, the films turned from tensile stress to compressive stress, however, the growth-induced anisotropy increased and would further dominant PMA. By analyzing AHE curves, the thinner films were easier to realize magnetization reversal due to the influence of domains width and interface reflection.
