Abstract:A novel OFDM scheme based on the orthogonal multiwavelet packets and symbols overlapped scheme are proposed in the paper. Analysis result shows that the spectral efficiency can be improved by twofold compared to that of the conventional OFDM.

Abstract:In order to further improve the spectrum efficiency in cognitive radio systems such as discontiguous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(DOFDM) where the secondary user can only utilize the subcarriers unused by the primary user,a novel spectrum sharing transmission scheme,namely Overlapped OFDMA,was proposed in this paper.By investigating the conventional OFDM signal architecture,it was found that,the secondary user and the primary user will not interfere with each other even if their subcarriers are partly overlapped,as long as the secondary user adopts a subcarrier space half of that of the primary user and their subcarriers are properly allocated and quasi-synchronized.The information carried by different subcarriers can be jointly recovered due to that its interference in fact contains information from the other subcarriers.Both the analysis and simulation results show that,the proposed Overlapped OFDMA scheme can achieve similar performance as DOFDM for the primary user,and much better throughput for the secondary user,at a price of increased system complexity.It thus provides a new choice for the design of future spectrum sharing communication systems.

Abstract:By multiplexing two OFDM signals with the same channel space and bit rate together in an interleaved mode, a novel optical multiplexing scheme is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Since the channel space is halved, the spectral efficiency is doubled compared with conventional OFDM. It is proved that the orthogonality between the subcarriers is maintained as long as the data is real. With discrete Fourier transform, the proposed scheme has similar computational complexity as conventional OFDM and single sideband modulation is conveniently achieved. A 10 Gb/s transmission system is set up, and proves the feasibility and efficiency of the scheme experimentally.

Abstract:Recently, a scheme called Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) with Generalized Index Modulation (OFDM-GIM) is proposed, in which the number of active subcarriers in an OFDM sub-block is adjustable and a higher spectral efficiency is achieved compared with the conventional Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing with Index Modulation(OFDM-IM) scheme. In this paper, based on the general index modulation structure, a spectrum-efficient Index Modulation with Improved Mapping is proposed. In this scheme, each sub-block can use different constellation mappings as well as different numbers of active subcarriers to transmit information. We further propose the corresponding transmitter and the receiver structures. The simulation results show that the proposed system achieves a higher spectrum efficiency and better BER performance compared with the existing OFDM-IM schemes.
An Efficient Radio Resource Management Strategy for Adaptive OFDM Cellular Systems

Abstract:This paper presents an efficient Radio Resource Management (RRM) strategy for adaptive Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) cellular systems. In the proposed strategy, only those users who have the same distance from their base stations can reuse a same subcarrier. This can guarantee the received Carrier-to-Interference ratio (C/I) of each subcarrier to be acceptable as required by system planning. Then by employing different modulation scheme on each subcarrier according to its received C/I, system spectral efficiency can be gracefully increased. Analytical and simulation results show that the spectral efficiency is improved by 40% without sacrificing the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance and call blocking probability and system capacity of the proposed strategy is better than conventional systems.

Abstract:Conventional OFDM transmission system uses a fixed-length Cyclic Prefix to counteract Inter-Symbol Interferences (ISI) caused by channel delay spreading under wireless mobile environment. This may cause considerable performance deterioration when the CP length is less than the channel RMS delay spread, or may decrease the system power and spectrum efficiency when it is much larger. A novel Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) transmission scheme is proposed in this paper to adapt the CP length to the variation of channel delay spread. AOFDM-VCPL utilizes the preamble or pilot sub-carriers of each OFDM packet to estimate the channel RMS delay spread; and then uses a criterion to calculate the CP length, which finally affects the OFDM transmitter. As illustrated in the simulation section, by deploying this scheme in a typical wireless environment, the system can transmit at data rate 11.5 Mb/s higher than conventional non-adaptive system while gaining a 0.65 dB power saving at the same BER performance.

Abstract:Acoustic orbital angular momentum (OAM) wave has orthogonality between different modes, which can be utilized as a new multiplexing dimension to increase channel capacity of underwater acoustic communication systems. Combining OAM with other multiplexing techniques in different dimensions can further improve the data rate. In this paper, we propose a system integrating the acoustic OAM modes, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and index modulation (IM) to achieve high-speed underwater acoustic communication. The OAM-OFDM-IM communication system is established and its performance is simulated. The analysis of technical indicators verifies that the system's data transmission rate is significantly improved and its bit error rate performance enhances at high signal-to-noise ratio.
Adaptive Subcarrier And Bit Allocation For Uplink Ofdm System

Abstract:Adaptive resource allocation algorithms for single and multi-user uplink OFDM access system are addressed. Firstly, the optimization problem of rate-sum capacity is formulated, considering the restriction of integer bit constellation in practice. Then, a fast bit allocation algorithm is proposed for single user OFDM system, which allocates a certain number of bits using water-filling approach and distributes the remaining power via greedy method, subsequently. It is shown that the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is much lower than that of the greedy algorithm. Finally, a novel subcarrier and bit allocation algorithm is proposed for the multi-user case. It first determines the assignment of subcarriers to different users and then allocates bits to the assigned subcarriers via the above fast bit allocation algorithm for each single user. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves a higher spectral efficiency, in comparison with the other existing algorithms.

Abstract:For well-known orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), the cyclic prefix (CP) is essential for coping with multipath channels. Nevertheless, CP is a pure redundant signal, which wastes valuable time–frequency resources. We propose a novel waveform based on symbol repetition, which is presented to cut down the CP overhead in OFDM. In the presented OFDM with symbol repetition (SR-OFDM), one CP is inserted in the front of several transmitted symbols, instead of only one symbol, as in the conventional way. As a result, it can save the overhead created by CP. Furthermore, due to the existence of the remaining CP, the multipath channel can still be converted into the frequency domain, and single-tap equalization can still be used to equalize information free from interference. In addition, we also extend the proposed SR-OFDM into multiple input–multiple output (MIMO) systems. Finally, the proposed schemes are validated by computer simulations under the various channels.

Abstract:In order to improve the transmission performance in inter-symbol interference channel, a controlled inter-symbol overlapping transmission scheme to obtain high frequency efficiency, which is called inter-symbol overlapping transmission (ISOT), is studied. ISOT allows K symbols to be simultaneously transmitted without increasing channel bandwidth, and the symbol transmission interval can be decreased to Ts/K, assuming that Ts is the symbol duration. In additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, we study the ISOT system which symbol rate is greater than system bandwidth. Though inter-symbol overlapping transmission doesn't increase channel bandwidth, the spectrum efficiency can be increased by K times in theory. Simulation results show that ISOT can achieve higher spectrum efficiency compared with high dimension modulation, even if low dimension BPSK or QPSK modulation is used. Furthermore, we integrate ISOT with single-carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) and evaluate its BER performance. Simulation results show that ISOT integrated with SC-FDE has significant performance improvement comparing to SC-FDE with 2K-QAM, while ISOT uses QPSK modulation to transmit K symbols simultaneously. Simulation also shows that the more the symbols overlapping, the more the performance improvement. Inter-symbol overlapping transmission scheme can be used in mobile device and used as a uplink transmission technology in mobile communication systems, such as B3G or 4G, to provide higher spectrum efficiency.

Abstract:Enhanced orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (eOFDM) is one of the promising multicarrier schemes which uses a unique data-dependent pseudorandom (PN) sequence as a guard interval in each OFDM block. The guard interval of eOFDM provides a unique relation between the guard sequence and user data symbols on different subcarriers of the OFDM block, consequently improving the bit error rate (BER) and capacity performances. This paper proposes the eOFDM technique for a multi-hop wireless system and analyzes its performance in Rayleigh fading channel. Precisely, a closed-form expression for the probability density function (PDF) of end-to-end signal to noise ratio (SNR) of a multi-hop system is derived. The system's outage probability (OP) and ergodic capacity (EC) are analyzed and closed-form expressions for these performance metrics are derived. The simulation results verify the validity of all theoretical derivations. Performance metrics for each hop are investigated over independent Rayleigh fading channels. It is shown that the sum capacity of multi-hop eOFDM system is greater than the conventional multi-hop OFDM system in Rayleigh fading channel for any value of SNR. Additionally, eOFDM system shows lower outage probability than OFDM system in multi-hop scenario.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with index modulation has emerged as a promising complementary technique for next-generation networks due to its high energy efficiency. In this paper, zero-padded tri-mode index modulation aided OFDM (ZTM-OFDM) is proposed, where subcarriers are partitioned into subblocks. Explicitly, only a fraction of subcarriers are utilized for modulation with two distinguishable constellation alphabets in each OFDM subblock, whilst the others remain empty. By such strategy, additional bits can be conveyed by the subcarrier indices corresponding to the two constellation sets (denoted as index pattern). At the receiver, a maximum-likelihood (ML) detector and a two-stage log-likelihood ratio (LLR) detector with reduced complexity are proposed for demodulation. The proposed ZTM-OFDM is capable of enhancing the spectral and energy efficiency compared with other index modulated OFDM schemes. Theoretical analysis based on the minimum Euclidean distance and Monte Carlo simulation results validate that the proposed ZTM-OFDM can attain performance gain over conventional OFDM and other index modulated OFDM schemes.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) with index modulation has been emerged as a promising technique for next-generation networks, where the specific activation pattern of the OFDM subcarriers is capable of conveying additional information implicitly without additional energy consumption, hence improving the system energy efficiency. In this paper, zero-padded tri-mode OFDM with index modulation (ZTM-OFDM-IM) is proposed, which is capable of achieving high spectral and energy efficiency. In ZTM-OFDM-IM, subcarriers are partitioned into subblocks. In each OFDM subblock, only a fraction of subcarriers are modulated by two distinguishable constellation alphabets, while the others remain empty, which reduces the energy consumption. With such an arrangement, extra information bits can be carried by the subcarrier activation pattern. At the receiver, a maximum-likelihood (ML) detector as well as a reduced-complexity two-stage log-likelihood ratio (LLR) detector are developed for signal demodulation. Theoretical performance analysis based on Euclidean distance metric and pairwise error probability are conducted. Besides, in order to attain better BER performance, the design strategies for the two distinguishable constellation alphabets are investigated, which is followed by brief discussions on generalization methods for the proposed ZTM-OFDM-IM. It is demonstrated via Monte Carlo simulations that ZTM-OFDM-IM is capable of enhancing the BER performance compared with the conventional OFDM and other conventional index-modulated OFDM benchmarks, which provides high-rate data transmission with low energy consumption. Moreover, the LLR detection of ZTM-OFDM-IM only suffers from slight performance loss in comparison with the ML detection and achieves significant complexity reduction.
Layered Optical OFDM Schemes for IM/DD OWC Systems

Abstract:Most conventional optical OFDM (O-OFDM) schemes suffer from low spectral efficiency due to the interference introduced by time-domain signal processing. In this paper, we propose a novel design principle for layered O-OFDM schemes for intensity modulation with direct detection (IM/DD) optical wireless communication (OWC) to fully exploit the spectral resources. All layered O-OFDM schemes are designed to meet the constraint that the interference introduced by time-domain signal processing at each layer is designed mutually orthogonal to the frequency-domain signals at the current and lower layers. To satisfy this constraint, we discuss two approaches for time-domain signal processing and corresponding spectrum resource allocation, and present the subsequent transceiver design for the proposed layered O-OFDM schemes. The proposed layered O-OFDM schemes exhibit high spectral efficiencies, and numerical results demonstrate their low bit error rates (BERs) and high power efficiencies. Furthermore, the high flexibility of these schemes guided by the proposed design principle enables them to meet a wide range of diverse communication requirements.

Abstract:Based on the double repetition structure in the frequency domain and the proper pulse shaping filter in the time domain, a novel transmit scheme for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with virtual subcarriers is proposed. Our proposed scheme with comb-type pilots can provide feasibility to reduce the channel estimation errors at the band edges with conventional inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT)-based channel estimator. Also this transmit scheme can provide additional diversity compared to the conventional OFDM scheme. Meanwhile, the receiver schemes corresponding to the proposed transmit scheme are presented to obtain the advantages mentioned above. All these efficacies are confirmed by simulations.
