Abstract:By multiplexing two OFDM signals with the same channel space and bit rate together in an interleaved mode, a novel optical multiplexing scheme is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Since the channel space is halved, the spectral efficiency is doubled compared with conventional OFDM. It is proved that the orthogonality between the subcarriers is maintained as long as the data is real. With discrete Fourier transform, the proposed scheme has similar computational complexity as conventional OFDM and single sideband modulation is conveniently achieved. A 10 Gb/s transmission system is set up, and proves the feasibility and efficiency of the scheme experimentally.

Abstract:A novel high spectral efficiency all-optical sampling orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (AOS-OFDM) scheme with optical cyclic postfixes (OCPs) inserted is proposed. Ultrashort pulses are used as optical samples and processed by all optical discrete Fourier transformers based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) technique. This scheme includes five subcarrier channels with 20 Gb/s differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK) modulation of each channel. So, the total bit rate is 100 Gb/s. The spectral efficiency is higher than 1.4. Furthermore, with the help of OCPs, the dispersion tolerance of this 100 Gb/s AOS-OFDM system increases to more than 300 ps/nm, which is much higher than a traditional 100 Gb/s DQPSK system.

Abstract:A novel all-optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (AO-OFDM) scheme is proposed and demonstrated. Ultrashort optical pulses are used as samples for optical discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and the inverse DFT process. Different subcarrier channels can be parallelly processed by fiber Bragg gratings. A 20-Gb/s two subcarrier AO-OFDM experiment is carried out with narrowband filtering and optical cyclic postfixes(CP) inserted. Experimental results show that this scheme has good spectral efficiency. Furthermore, the received signals have better eye diagrams and bit error rate performance with the help of CP. Abstract:An all-optical sampling OFDM scheme using PolMux-DQPSK format with single source is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. 5 × 200 Gb/s AOS-OFDM signal with spectral efficiency of 3.07 bit/s/Hz is successfully transmitted over an 80 km SMF link with real-time detection by optical Fourier transform filters. Furthermore, this scheme can coexist with traditional WDM channels and be a promising technique for seamless upgrade of transmission date rate.

Abstract:Spectrally and energy efficient orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (SEE-OFDM) is an optical OFDM technique based on combining multiple asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM) signals into one OFDM signal. By summing different components together, SEE-OFDM can achieve the same spectral efficiency as DC-biased optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM) without an energy-inefficient DC-bias. This paper introduces multiple methods for decoding a SEE-OFDM symbol and shows that an iterative decoder with hard decisions gives the best performance. Being a multi-component format, different energy allocation amongst the different components of SEE-OFDM is possible. However, equal energy allocation performs 1.5 dB better than unequal energy allocation. A hard-decision, iterative subtraction receiver can further increase performance by another 1.5 dB over soft-decision subtraction and reconstruction receivers. SEE-OFDM consistently performs 3 dB or better and with higher spectral efficiency than ACO-OFDM at the same bit-error-rate (BER). Comparing other combination methods at the same BER, SEE-OFDM performs up to 3 dB better than hybrid asymmetrically clipped optical (OFDM) (HACO-OFDM) and up to 1.5 dB better than asymmetrically and symmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ASCO-OFDM) and enhanced unipolar OFDM (eU-OFDM) when using hard decisions at the receiver. Additionally, SEE-OFDM has the best peak-to-average-power rate (PAPR) as compared to the other combination OFDM formats and ACO-OFDM, which makes it excellent for any range limited optical source, such as laser diodes and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In summary, SEE-OFDM is shown to have excellent properties to glean additional capacity from an intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) optical wireless communications system.

Abstract:As the 100 Gbit/s Ethernet(100 GbE) has gradually become a commercial reality,the next step of migration is toward 1 Tbit/s Ethernet transport.Coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(CO-OFDM) has recently drawon much attention to improve system capacity and transmission distance over fiber for its superior performance in spectrum efficiency,robust chromatic dispersion(CD) tolerance,receiver sensitivity,and polarization mode diversity(PMD) resilience,which has also been considered as a promising candidate for long-haul transmissions.In conventional optical OFDM systems,analog-to-digital converter(ADC) and digital-to-analog converter(DAC) are needed at transmitter and receiver,respectively.However,the radio frequency(RF) bandwidths and sampling rates of ADC and DAC are limited by current manufacturing.To overcome this problem,an 8×112 Gbit/s all-optical OFDM transmission system is proposed in this paper.A single laser source is utilized to generate frequency comb source as the sub-carriers of the proposed all-optical OFDM system with frequency spacing of 28 GHz by differential Mach-Zehnder external modulator.Each of 8 carriers of the comb source is encoded with 112 Gbit/s polarization division multiplexing quadrature phase shift keying(PDM-QPSK).At the receiver,optical fast Fourier transform(FFT) is performed by cascaded Mach-Zehnder delay interferometers(MZDIs) to de-multiplex the all-optical OFDM signal into 8 lower bit rate sub-carrier tributaries which can then be individually processed electronically.The back-to-back simulation results show that the optical signal-to-noise ratio(OSNR) penalty of 8×12 Gbit/s all-optical OFDM is about 9 dB compared with 112 Gbit/s single carrier system at bit error rate(BER) of 10-3,and its is available to update the current single carrier system using all-optical OFDM and common coherent optical receiver while without introducing signal impairment.

Abstract:This paper presents an enhanced hybrid asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme referred to as EHACO-OFDM. The scheme uses asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM) on the odd subcarriers, pulse-amplitude-modulated discrete multitone modulation (PAM-DMT) on the imaginary parts of even subcarriers, and direct-current-biased optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM) on the real parts of even ones. Since the entire available bandwidth is utilized for data modulation, this scheme can achieve higher spectral efficiency than HACO-OFDM and ACO-OFDM. Moreover, as a smaller DC bias is introduced in our scheme, it is more power efficient than asymmetrically clipped DC-biased optical OFDM (ADO-OFDM) and DCO-OFDM. Simulation results show that EHACO-OFDM performs much better than ADO-OFDM and HACO-OFDM at high bit rates.

Abstract:This investigation demonstrates the generation of OFDM-RoF signal using frequency doubling technique for the first time, to the author's best knowledge. The 4-Gb/s OFDM signal using 16-QAM format modulated on each subcarrier at a center frequency of 19GHz is experimentally demonstrated. Benchmarked against the OOK format, the 16-QAM OFDM format has the higher spectral efficiency with a sensitivity penalty of less than 2.6 dB. After transmission over 50-km single mode fiber, the power penalties of RF OOK and OFDM signals are less than 0.5 dB.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate 208-Gb/s/lambda discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) transmission over a 40-km standard single-mode fiber without chromatic dispersion compensation using a low-cost direct-detection architecture based on the dual-driver Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). One twin-single sideband (SSB) signal is generated by driving the upper and lower arms of a dual-driver MZM with a real signal and its respective Hilbert pair. A MIMO-Volterra equalizer is proposed to mitigate the interference and nonlinearity penalty of the twin-SSB signal. Using the Twin-SSB without the MIMO algorithm can only reach 165 Gb/s/lambda, and applying a conventional SSB can only achieve 164 Gb/s/lambda with a bit error ratio less than 5x10(-3). However, we achieve a 240-Gb/s/lambda twin-SSB DFT-S OFDM signal in the back-to-back (BTB) case using the twin-SSB signal and MIMO-Volterra Equalization method, which implies that double spectral efficiency and more than 45% data rate improvement are obtained.

Abstract:The performance of a novel all-optical sampling orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system is proposed and analyzed. Time delays and phase shifters are used to realize all optical forward/inverse discrete Fourier transform (DFT/IDFT). Different system configurations are tested and analyzed to optimize the performance, including the system capacity, modulation formats, DFT/IDFT constructions, and the width of the sample pulse. The 50- and 100-Gb/s real-time all-optical sampling (AOS) OFDM systems are investigated. All results are analyzed, and useful suggestions are offered for future high-speed applications.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising technology for the next-generation optical transmission systems beyond 100 Gb/s. To further improve the spectral efficiency and system reliability, we propose a flexible coherent zero padding OFDM (CO-ZP-OFDM) scheme with signaling-embedded preamble and polarization-time-frequency (PTF) coded pilots for high-speed optical transport networks. Our judicious design embeds signaling in the specially designed preamble whose Delta-like correlation function helps to simultaneously achieve very accurate timing and frequency synchronization. Unlike the periodically inserted training symbols, the PTF-coded pilots are properly distributed within the time-frequency grid of the ZP-OFDM payload symbols and used to realize low-complexity multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel estimation at high accuracy. Compared with the conventional optical OFDM systems, CO-ZP-OFDM increases payload by about 6.68%, and the low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded bit error rate only suffers from no more than 0.3 dB compared with the back-to-back case even when the channel dispersion impairments are severe.

Abstract:In this paper, we have proposed a novel optical OFDM transmission link that takes advantages of discrete Hartley Transform (DHT) and constant envelope (CE) modulation, obtaining DHT-based constant envelope optical OFDM. The numerical results show that this design achieves better performance when compared with conventional O-OFDM in terms of bit error rate (BER) and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). The impact of phase modulation index (PMI) on both PAPR and noise tolerance is investigated. Since the scheme has simplified design, it is believed to be a cost-effective in the practical implement.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the proposed optical orthogonal time frequency space (O-OTFS) is capable of improving the bandwidth-/power-/energy-efficiencies of optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (O-OFDM). The bandwidth-efficiency is improved because only a single cyclic prefix (CP) is needed for an entire O-OTFS frame. The power-efficiency is enhanced thanks to the diversity gain achieved by its symplectic finite Fourier transform (SFFT), which also leads to a reduced peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), hence improving its energy-efficiency. These features are facilitated by the proposed layered asymmetrically clipped O-OTFS (LACO-OTFS), which is capable of removing the direct current (DC) bias while retaining the full optical throughput. Nonetheless, there exists an inherent trade-off, where increasing the O-OTFS frame size leads to a commensurately reduced CP percentage at the cost of an increased PAPR. In order to mitigate this, we propose to perform discrete Fourier transform based spreading (DFT-S) in the delay-Doppler (DD)-domain. Furthermore, we demonstrate that regardless of the choice of domain in which the information is modulated (i.e. O-OFDM/O-OTFS with/without DFT-S), the frequency-selectivity of the quasi-static but dispersive optical channel can always be equalized by single-tap frequency-domain equalization (FDE). Moreover, the channel estimation techniques are conceived to operate in the time-/frequency-/DD-domains for both O-OFDM and O-OTFS. Our simulation results demonstrate that for a multi-user optical wireless system associated with M = 64 subcarriers and the OTFS frame length of N = 64, LACO-OTFS is capable of achieving a 7 dB power-efficiency gain over LACO-OFDM, where the CP overhead is reduced by a factor of N = 64. DFT-S-LACO-OTFS is also capable of providing a 7 dB power-efficiency gain over DFT-S-LACO-OFDM, where the low PAPR of single-carrier transmission is retained.

Abstract:A highly spectral-efficient transmission system based on optical code-division multiplexing (OCDM) technique is investigated. To meet the rapid increase in the demand of data bandwidth, spectral efficiency is becoming a key factor in optical transport systems. Several modulation formats along with the optical receiver design have been proposed to upgrade the spectral efficiency. OCDM is one of the promising techniques for this purpose. OCDM is the other class of multiplexing technique than optical time-division multiplexing and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). OCDM provides unique features such as asynchronous transmission, secure communication, soft capacity on demand, and high degree of scalability. In this paper, we apply OCDM technique to the highly spectral-efficient transmission system by quaternary phase-shift keying optical encoding/decoding along with ultrafast optical time-gating and optical hard thresholding. As a result, a transmission of 6.4 Tbit/s OCDM/WDM (4 OCDM $\times {\hbox{ 40 WDM }}\times {\hbox{ 40 Gbit/s}}$) using only C-band wavelength region is experimentally demonstrated with 1.6-bit/s/Hz spectral efficiency.
