Abstract:We propose a novel large-scale OXC architecture that utilizes intra-mode optical cross-connect sub-elements and inter-mode switching bridges. We show by simulation that the proposed OXC architecture attains significant hardware scale reduction and similar blocking performance to the one-dimensional fully-connected OXC.

Abstract:A high-speed compact silicon digital optical switch (DOS) is proposed in this paper. The direct electro-optic effect is applied by filling electro-optic polymer in the void slot of the branches, which compensates the limitation of silicon itself. The crosstalk of about 35dB and the insertion loss of 0.7dB is obtained, the switching speed is less than 1ps, and the whole device length can be shortened to 616μm even using the basic mode-evolving principle and a simple Y-type structure. Analysis also shows that the device has good fabrication tolerance and wavelength independence over the C-band.

Abstract:We demonstrate a reconfigurable 4 × 4 silicon optical switch network by using an architecture of Half-Crossbar. It has the advantage of flexible scalability and utilizes fewer elements. The proposed switch is composed of six dual-microring resonators tuned by the thermo-optic effect. The footprint is only 176 μm × 632 μm. At the wavelength of 1557 nm, the average insertion loss is smaller than 2.5 dB according to the results of all 24 switching states. Its rising response time is about 4.9 μs. The experiment verified the optical data transmission ability of the proposed switch network.

Abstract:To achieve complex functionality with small size, weight and power, photonic integrated circuits (PIC) are expanded from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D). In this paper, a new design for a scalable 3D silicon optical switch is proposed. Key elements, including silicon electro-optic switches, crossings, and interlayer transitions are used to define and optimize the 3D optical switching network. The architecture is based on CLOS architecture, which can be extended to multiple layers. Silicon-based two- and three-layer switches are carefully designed and analyzed as an example based on the transfer matrix technique (TMT). In a 4×4 two-layer optical switch, the average insertion loss at 1550 nm wavelength is ∼4.16 dB, and ∼3.69 dB for the “all-cross” and “all-bar” states, respectively. In a 4×4 three-layer optical switch, the average insertion loss at 1550 nm wavelength is ∼5.96 dB, and ∼5.41 dB for the “all-cross” and “all-bar” states, respectively. The architecture also shows the scalability of both the port number and the layer number. The scalable 3D architecture proposed could improve the interconnect density twice and thrice in a single-layer design.

Abstract:All-optical switching technology without optical-electrical-optical(OEO)conversion creates transparency in an optical network and greatly reduces the complexity and cost of the node.Multi-granularity optical cross-connect reduces the scale and complexity of the switching matrix—which indicates the direction of the wavelength division multiplexing(WDM)optical network.With the development of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM),bandwidth-variable optical node technology has become the focus of attention.This paper introduces the switching architecture of optical cross-connect(OXC)and multi-granularity optical cross-connect based on wavelength.It also introduces the node switching architecture of OFDM and single-carrier frequency division multiplexing(SCFDM).An experiments with bandwidth-variable reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer(ROADM)and OXC is presented.The node in the proposed optical switching has Pbit/s capability.

Abstract:In this paper a silicon-based digital optical switch (DOS) with the slot structure is demonstrated. Abstract:Optical network-on-chip( ONoC) has many characteristics superior to electrical interconnection and has emerged as a promising alternative. To improve the performance of optical on-chip networks,a novelring-based 4 × 4nonblocking silicon optical router was proposed by means of optical module method. This structure just composes evenmicroring-resonator-based switching elements and six waveguide crossings,which reduce power consumption,device area and insertion loss. Finally,the topology performance were evalutated in terms of insertion loss and power consumption.The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed architecture consumes 8% less power and 7% less optical insertion loss.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a 1 x 2 thermooptic digital optical switch with variable optical attenuators that are integrated with the S-bend waveguides connecting the output of the Y-switch with a standard fiber array. With a total heating power of 140 mW applied to the switch, we have achieved less than -42-dB optical crosstalk. The wavelength response of the switch is flat across the entire C-band. The average polarization-dependent loss of the switch is about 0.49 dB.

Abstract:As a single-ring resonator is used for an optical cross-connect (OXC) switch, a large jitter of 30 ps and a low extinction ratio may occur due to delay and crosstalk. We propose a dual-drive, three-ring OXC, which exhibits a jitter of 8 ps and an extinction ratio of 20 dB. © 2009 OSA.

Abstract:We demonstrate an optical switch array based on the topology of Butterfly by using dual-microring resonators which can be used in the ultra-compact network. The proposed switch is composed of 12 basic switch elements tuned by thermo-optic (TO) effect, which can build links freely without any blocking. Due to the advantages of microring resonators, the footprint switch array is smaller than 0.2 mm(2). The optical structure can complete 4- and 8-ports signal routing. It shows a large bandwidth over 50GHz, thereby performing well under condition of high-speed data transmission.

Abstract:A 1×3 optical switch is demonstrated utilizing the 0.8-μm standard CMOS technology. Extinction ratios higher than 21dB are obtained for three states. It is with low power consumption (~7.4mW) and switching time (~15.3ns).

Abstract:In this paper we present a new approach for building non-blocking optical MINs on building blocks of given size. The network constructed by our approach is self-routing and has O(log2N) propagation delay for size N×N. The maximum signal loss and crosstalk are compared to those of the widely used crossbar network with the switch complexity of O(N2). The proposed approach is a good choice for constructing non-blocking optical switch networks with low signal loss and crosstalk.

Abstract:We report on an experimental 3 x 3 thermo-optical switch on silicon on insulator. By controlling a single combined phase shifter, light from any input waveguide can be directed to any output waveguide, showing a simple control method and highly integrated structure as compared to the conventional multiway optical switches. Furthermore, the proposed optical switch can be generalized to be a 1 x N and N x N optical switch without an extra phase shifter. The switch is fabricated by complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology. By experiment, full 3 x 3 switching functionality is demonstrated at a wavelength of 1.55 mu m, with an average cross talk of -11.1 dB and a power consumption of 97.5 mW. Abstract:In this letter, a Mach-Zehnder-based four-port switching module was designed and fabricated by a 0.8-mu m standard commercial complementary metal-oxide semiconductor line. The module is composed of five electro-optic switching elements and can be used to realize nonblocking switching for the duplex interconnection among four ports. The switching elements are electrically driven with a nanosecond response. Full routing functionality of the four-port switching module is demonstrated with crosstalk levels lower than -11.8 dB under a common spectral bandwidth of 40 nm.

Abstract:A novel optical switch structure is proposed to implement the function of cross-connection, optical power control and crosstalk reduction for optical cross-connect (OXC) in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical transport networks. Based on the conventional AS/AC network structure, the proposed one deploys a set of 1x2 digital optical switches (DOS) between the AS and AC modules. Thus the optical signal power can be controlled and the crosstalk can be reduced by adjusting the driving voltage of the 1x2 DOSS. Experiments with a 4x4 polymeric thermo-optical DOS demonstrate that the power control range is more than 35 dB, and the delay for 3 dB power control is within 7.5 ms in the worst case. Analytical result also shows that the crosstalk can be suppressed at least 35 dB.

Abstract:Recently, spatial-division-multiplexing based on weakly coupled multicore or few-mode fibers has been proposed for short-reach switching scenarios, in which spatial mode can be used as an independent switching dimension. Fully connected cross-connections (OXC) converting all spatial modes and wavelengths into one-dimensional switching ports and followed by huge switching array can provide nonblocking switching, but the hardware implementation is very complex and expensive. In this paper, we propose a layered OXC structure consisting of intramode sub-OXCs and intermode switching bridges. Then, a scattered-spectrum-scan intramode-first routing and spectrum allocation (SSS-IMF-RSA) scheme is designed, in which only a few discrete spectrum segments instead of the whole spectrum should be scanned for spectrum allocation. The switching will be performed preferentially for the wavelength dimension because of mature switching capability and less searching time. We show by simulation that the proposed layered OXC with the SSS-IMF-RSA scheme can achieve similar blocking performance to fully connected OXCs with up to 76.1% hardware scale reduction and 93% searching time reduction for network accommodation. The proposed OXC and RSA scheme greatly decrease the requirements for the port number of WSS and enable components reuse to achieve smooth evolution.

Abstract:We present a polymer Y-branching digital thermo-optic switch with which a variable optical attenuator is integrated. Without any structural extend of the device, it can realize low insertion loss and wide branching angle. By optimizing the design of Y-branching area, a wide-angle low loss Y-branch can be realized. With an applied electrical power of 120 mW, it has a low insertion loss of 0.5 dB and a low crosstalk of -40 dB at 1.55 μm. The polymer digital optical switch (DOS) is attractive in practice due to its compact size, low insertion loss and low power consumption. In addition, it shows good polarization independence and good stability.

Abstract:An on-chip three-mode division multiplexing circuit using a simple ADC-based TE 0 & TE 1 & TE 2 (de)multiplexer is demonstrated to improve the link capacity of on-chip optical interconnects. The proposed (de)multiplexer does not contain any tapered waveguide which is different from the previous mode (de)multiplexer based on ADCs. Here, we choose multimode waveguide width first and then confirm corresponding width of the other two waveguides. Thus the bus waveguide without any tapers can not only reduce complexity of (de)multiplexer but also reduce difficulty of the fabrication. Our simulation results show that the hybrid multiplexer has relatively low loss and low crosstalk about −40 dB, −26.99 dB and −28.72 dB for each mode around 1550 nm with a width-variation w =±25 nm. These properties make the proposed mode-(de)multiplexer suitable for application in high-capacity data transmission.
