Abstract:We design and fabricate a four-port wavelength-selective optical router on silicon-on-insulator wafer for photonic networks-on-chip. The router consists of four basic operation blocks. Each is constructed by one microring resonator (MRR) based add-drop filter rather than the traditional two microrings based 2 x 2 optical crossbar. It can provide multiwavelength routing for each path to increase the aggregate data transmission bandwidth. The possible 12 I/O routing paths are experimentally observed in the transmission spectra and each of them has the ability to route four group wavelengths simultaneously in the measured spectral range. The device has a small footprint (similar to 78 x 100 mu m(2)) and low power consumption (6.58 mW).

Abstract:By using overlapping-imaging characteristic of the multimode interference (MMI) and the area modulation method, this paper presents a three-wavelength 3×3 rearrangeable switch, which consists of the two cascaded building blocks: a 2×2 tunable splitter and a full shuffle 1×3 switch with only one compound modulation region. Its operation characteristics are analyzed by utilizing 2-D BPM simulation. The simulated extinction ratio is higher than 30dB for all operating wavelengths 1545 nm, 1550 nm and 1555 nm. Good 3-D performances can be expected after optimization and improved fabrication.

Abstract:A monolithic 6x6 transmitter-router with both port and wavelength switching at sub-nanosecond speed is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Based on an intra-cavity cyclic echelle diffraction grating router (EDGR) and semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) arrays, each selectable output port can realize a selected multi-wavelength laser (MWL) output. The measurement results show that all 36 input-output combinations have a single-mode emission spectrum with a sidemode suppression ratio (SMSR) over 30 dB. Simultaneous switching of six laser wavelengths is achieved together with the switching of the output port by a single electrode selection. The switching time is less than 1 ns. It can offer a cost-effective solution to multi-wavelength multi-port optical transmitter-routers for fast distributed optical switching in datacenters and high-performance computers (HPCs). Abstract:We demonstrate an optical switch array based on the topology of Butterfly by using dual-microring resonators which can be used in the ultra-compact network. The proposed switch is composed of 12 basic switch elements tuned by thermo-optic (TO) effect, which can build links freely without any blocking. Due to the advantages of microring resonators, the footprint switch array is smaller than 0.2 mm(2). The optical structure can complete 4- and 8-ports signal routing. It shows a large bandwidth over 50GHz, thereby performing well under condition of high-speed data transmission.

Abstract:We design and fabricate a wavelength-selective nonblocking 4 × 4 silicon optical router based on microring resonator for use in future integrated photonic interconnection networks. We successfully demonstrate 12 possible I/O routing paths and present 13 nonblocking operating states, including four broadcasting states, with worst-case extinction ratio and cross talk of 21.05 and -21.56 dB, respectively. Thermal tuning is employed to compensate the resonance shift of microring resonators caused by fabrication errors and adjust the resonance to match the International Telecommunication Unit grid with the channel spacing of 100 GHz.

Abstract:We report on an experimental 3 x 3 thermo-optical switch on silicon on insulator. By controlling a single combined phase shifter, light from any input waveguide can be directed to any output waveguide, showing a simple control method and highly integrated structure as compared to the conventional multiway optical switches. Furthermore, the proposed optical switch can be generalized to be a 1 x N and N x N optical switch without an extra phase shifter. The switch is fabricated by complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology. By experiment, full 3 x 3 switching functionality is demonstrated at a wavelength of 1.55 mu m, with an average cross talk of -11.1 dB and a power consumption of 97.5 mW. Abstract:Optical network-on-chip( ONoC) has many characteristics superior to electrical interconnection and has emerged as a promising alternative. To improve the performance of optical on-chip networks,a novelring-based 4 × 4nonblocking silicon optical router was proposed by means of optical module method. This structure just composes evenmicroring-resonator-based switching elements and six waveguide crossings,which reduce power consumption,device area and insertion loss. Finally,the topology performance were evalutated in terms of insertion loss and power consumption.The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed architecture consumes 8% less power and 7% less optical insertion loss.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a four-port mode-selective optical router on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The passive routing property ensures that the router consumes no power to establish the optical links. For each port, input signals with different modes are selectively routed to the target ports through the pre-designed architecture. In general, the device intrinsically supports broadcasting of multiplexed signals from one port to the other three ports through mode division multiplexing. In some applications, the input signal from one port would only be sent to another port as in reconfigurable optical routers. The prototype is constructed by mode multiplexers/de-multiplexers and single-mode interconnect waveguides between them. The insertion losses for all optical links are lower than 8.0 dB, and the largest optical crosstalk values are lower than -18.7 dB and -22.0 dB for the broadcasting and port-to-port routing modes, respectively, at the wavelength range of 1525-1565 nm. In order to verify the routing functionality, a 40-Gbps bidirectional data transmission experiment is performed. The device offers a promising building block for passive routing by utilizing the dimension of the modes.

Abstract:We propose and fabricate a five-port silicon optical router based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer switches. Only 10 switching elements and five low-loss waveguide crossings are required in our design. Through thermal control of the switching network, we successfully demonstrate 20 possible I/O paths of the five-port optical router at a data transmission rate of 32 Gb/s. The results here show great potential for application in ultrahigh-capacity optical interconnects.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact and broadband 1 × 4 optical switch based on W2 photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs). The footprint of the W2 PCW is only 17.6 μm × 8 μm. An operation bandwidth of 15 nm ± 1 nm is implemented with an extinction ratio over 15 dB in each channel. By introducing the thermal insulation trench, the tuning efficiency is enhanced at least 77% in experiment. The experimental results indicate the potential of the proposed broadband thermo-optic switch in silicon on-chip interconnects.

Abstract:By employing the self-imaging properties of multimode interference, a 1 × 3 optical switch with mono-compound modulation region is presented. When at different switching states, a multiple relation exists in the acquired modulation magnitudes in the connecting arms, and therefore, the phase shifters in the arms can compose a mono-compound modulation region (MCMR). By continuously changing the refractive indices in the MCMR, light incident from any input port can be switched alternatively to arbitrary output port. Based on Al0.07Ga0.93As/GaAs ridge structure, the proposed device was optimized and theoretically demonstrated by employing BEAMPROP software. The extinction ratio is as high as 30.3 dB. The crosstalk between adjacent channels is less than -29.8 dB. In a wide spectral range (-50 nm) around 1.31μm wavelength, the crosstalk keeps lower than -20 dB. This device may greatly simplify the modulating scheme of traditionaly multichannel switch and relax the complextity of external controlling.

Abstract:In this paper, a compact 1×3 photonic crystal (PC) router is proposed to act as the basic building block to realize scalable wavelength-selective non-blocking routing. Compared with N×N routers constructed with traditional basic building blocks (1×2 or 2×2 wavelength routers), the comprehensive performance of the device can be improved. Based on four 1×3 router units, a 4×4 wavelength-selective non-blocking PC router with a footprint of 1060.4 μm2 is designed. The number of resonators in the configuration is only one-half of that in 4×4 PC routers reported in the available literatures. For the non-blocking routing function, the signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of the 4×4 PC router are 18.65-22.86 dB for all 32 optical links of the eight routing states at 1530 nm. For the wavelength selective routing function, the insertion loss and crosstalk of the 4×4 PC router are 0.474-0.575 dB and 11.029-36.409 dB respectively. More complex high-radix optical routers can be easily constructed with the proposed router unit, which is an attractive option for use in the future photonic networks-on-chip.

Abstract:We demonstrate a reconfigurable 4 × 4 silicon optical switch network by using an architecture of Half-Crossbar. It has the advantage of flexible scalability and utilizes fewer elements. The proposed switch is composed of six dual-microring resonators tuned by the thermo-optic effect. The footprint is only 176 μm × 632 μm. At the wavelength of 1557 nm, the average insertion loss is smaller than 2.5 dB according to the results of all 24 switching states. Its rising response time is about 4.9 μs. The experiment verified the optical data transmission ability of the proposed switch network.

Abstract:In this letter, a Mach-Zehnder-based four-port switching module was designed and fabricated by a 0.8-mu m standard commercial complementary metal-oxide semiconductor line. The module is composed of five electro-optic switching elements and can be used to realize nonblocking switching for the duplex interconnection among four ports. The switching elements are electrically driven with a nanosecond response. Full routing functionality of the four-port switching module is demonstrated with crosstalk levels lower than -11.8 dB under a common spectral bandwidth of 40 nm.

Abstract:Photonic network-on-chip (NoC) architectures are emerging as a new paradigm to interconnect a large number of processing cores at chip level, meeting the pressing demand for extremely high bandwidth and low power consumption. Optical routers, which are typically composed of silicon waveguides and optical switches, play a key role in an on-chip photonic interconnection network. In this paper, we propose a micro-ring-resonator (MRR)-based, scalable, and non-blocking passive optical router design, namely the generic wavelength-routed optical router (GWOR). We first introduce the four 4 x 4 GWOR router structures and then show how to construct GWORs of larger sizes by using the proposed 4 x 4 GWORs as the primitive building blocks. The number of MRRs used in the proposed GWOR is the least among the existing passive router designs for the same network size. In addition, we show that the power loss experienced on GWORs is lower than other comparative designs. Furthermore, to improve the bandwidth and fault tolerance capability of the GWORs, the redundant GWOR (RGWOR) structure is presented. RGWOR can provide multiple routing paths between each pair of input-output ports by cascading different types of GWORs.
