Abstract:Intersected slot waveguide is proposed to strongly confine TE and TM modes simultaneously. Confinement factors as wells as single-mode condition are given for fully symmetrical a-Si/SiO2/SOI intersected slot waveguide and the SiNx-covered case @ 1.55 mum. A pertinent polarization- independent device can be realized by size tuning, or by employing the analyzed polarization converter to alternatively treat the polarized modes. The conversion efficiency is also investigated in size dependence by mode matching method.

Abstract:Polarization dependence is an inherent challenge for wavelength-division multiplexing transceivers on silicon photonic platforms, causing severe problems with polarization-dependent losses and hindering the implementation of monolithic integrated receivers. In this study, we developed a polarization-insensitive demultiplexer on a silicon nitride (SiN) platform, which provides a promising solution to the polarization challenge. Comprising an etched diffraction grating (EDG) and a polarization beam splitter (PBS), the demultiplexer can achieve polarization insensitivity by introducing an additional optical path difference for polarization compensation. The fabricated demultiplexers were experimentally measured to have minimum insertion losses of 1.5 dB, cross talks of better than -25 dB, and polarization-dependent losses of better than 0.7 dB. This is the first, to the best of our knowledge, proposed solution for a polarization-insensitive EDG demultiplexer combined with a PBS on a SiN platform.

Abstract:Polarization-compatible receivers are indispensable in transceivers used for wavelength division multiplexing optical communications, as light polarization is unpredictable after transmission through network fibers. However, the strong waveguide birefringence makes it difficult to realize a polarization-independent wavelength demultiplexer in a silicon photonic receiver. Here, we utilized the birefringence effect for simultaneously demultiplexing wavelengths and polarizations, and experimentally demonstrated a polarization-independent wavelength demultiplexer with a single device on a SiPh platform. The principle was validated on an etched diffraction grating, which successfully split the arbitrarily polarized light containing four wavelengths into eight channels with single-polarization and single-wavelength signals. Polarization-dependent losses of 0.5–1.8 dB, minimum insertion loss of 0.5 dB, and crosstalks lower than −30 dB were experimentally measured for the fabricated etched diffraction grating. Thus, a promising general solution was developed for implementing polarization-independent wavelength division multiplexing receivers and other polarization-independent devices on photonics platforms with birefringent waveguide devices.

Abstract:A silicon cross-slot waveguide filled with electro-optic polymer is proposed to release the polarization-dependent issue of the electro-optic modulator. There are two slots in both the horizontal direction and vertical direction, so this waveguide structure can confine both the TE and TM modes. The four silicon regions can be lightly doped as the electrodes. There is slanted electric field in the slot region when the voltages are applied on the electrodes. The electric field component act at principal optical axis whose electric-optic (EO) coefficient is r33 or r13 can be adjusted by changing the voltages on the four electrodes. With optimal voltages, the effective refractive index of the TE and TM modes can be changed equally. The Mach-Zehnder modulator based on cross-slot waveguide can achieve polarization-insensitive.

Abstract:The polarization dependence of an arrayed waveguide grating demultiplexer based on Si photonic wires is analyzed. The height and width of the arrayed waveguides are optimized to make the channel spacing polarization insensitive. To make the central wavelength polarization insensitive, different diffraction orders are chosen for TE and TM polarizations, and the remaining polarization-dependent wavelength is compensated with a noncentral input. A detailed design procedure is presented and numerical simulation results are given.

Abstract:We present detailed modeling and experimental results for an improved design of an InGaAsP/lnP wavelength demultiplexer based on a monolithically integrated Rowland circle grating. The design incorporated ten wavelength channels at 1.55 mu m with a uniform spacing of 2 nm. The total on-chip loss was about 10 dB and the crosstalk between adjacent channels was as low as -25 dB. It was shown that low-loss etched turning mirrors can reduce the total on-chip loss by about 4 dB compared to traditional 90 degrees curved multimode waveguides. By replacing standard hat grating facets with retro-reflecting V-shaped facets in the echelle grating, the loss was further reduced by 4 dB, Polarization independent operation within a passband of 0.5 nm was achieved by using multimode output waveguide, The potential sources producing the crosstalk have been analyzed and fabrication modifications for further improvement are suggested.

Abstract:It is shown that a simple photonic crystal slab structure provides a powerful mechanism for the control of the polarization properties of light. For a lossless system, for a given incident light with any fixed polarization, one can generate arbitrary polarization in the reflected light, as one varies the direction of the incident light. In the lossy system, the capability for arbitrary polarization generation is still preserved for s‐ or p‐polarized incident light. This capability for arbitrary polarization generation closely relates to the nontrivial topological properties of the reflection matrix of the structure and exists over a wide range of frequencies.

Abstract:A birefringence compensation technique based on angled star couplers in arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) is experimentally investigated in silica-on-silicon waveguide with B-Ge codoped upper cladding. A 16-channel AWG with 100-GHz channel spacing is designed and fabricated. The star couplers are designed according to Rowland circle construction with an oblique incident/diffraction angle. Five different polarization compensation parameters corresponding to different incident/diffraction angles are employed to investigate the stress-induced birefringence. The experimental results confirm that the polarization-dependent wavelength shift (PDλ) can be tuned by varying the incident/diffraction angle at the star couplers, and a birefringence-free AWG can be achieved without any additional fabrication process.

Abstract:A novel design for reducing polarization sensitivity in silicon-on-insulator-based arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) (de)multiplexer is presented. Each arrayed waveguide has two sections separated by a polarization beam splitter (PBS). These two sections have different core widths and length differences. With these PBSs, one polarization is reflected and the other one goes through. The through polarization enters the second section and is then reflected by a reflector at the end of the second section of the arrayed waveguide. The theoretical simulation shows that one can diminish greatly the polarization sensitivity of both the central channel wavelength and the channel spacing by optimizing the core width and length difference of the second section. The design procedure and formulas are given and an appropriate diffraction order is chosen to obtain a good fabrication tolerance. As an example, an ultrasmall (82.2 x 85.1 mu m(2)) AWG (de)multiplexer with eight channels and a channel spacing of 4 nm is designed to have minimized polarization sensitivity and Bragg-grating PBSs and photonic crystal reflectors are used.

Abstract:Waveguide focusing grating couplers are being developed for application to optical data storage and for other applications where the advantages of light weight, monolithic construction, and ease of use with integrated optics are important. The polarization theory of these devices differs from the theory of conventional gratings because of the conversion of guided waves to radiated waves. We describe a simple theory based on induced dipoles that agrees well with experiment and that gives the designer insight into the process. The use of TM guided waves presents special difficulties. We discuss the design of waveguide focusing grating read-write heads for optical data storage applications, and show that it is possible, in principle, to achieve ideally mode-matched input and output, including intensity, phase, and polarization mode forms. Results of calculations of end-to-end performance will be presented. The experimental justification for the induced dipole theory will be described in a companion paper by Li et al.

Abstract:A simple design approach was presented to avoid the polarization dependence of magneto-optical(MO) waveguide by analyzing the nonreciprocal phase shift in order to widely spread the application of optical isolators,circulators and other nonreciprocal devices into the integrated photonic circuit.A higher refractive index region at one side of the MO core waveguide was involved laterally to break the symmetry of the field distribution.Then the polarization independence of nonreciprocal waveguide was realized.The analysis combined perturbation method and finite difference method shows that the relative derivation between TE and TM mode is lower than 1% while the width of the square single-mode waveguide is larger than 0.7 μm.The advantages in size,fabrication tolerance and design flexibility of the structure may facilitate the nonreciprocal optical device.

Abstract:In this paper we report an effective work of polarization independence in the design of a 11×,11 polymer arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) multiplexer. Theoretical analysis of the polarization properties is given by using Marcatili method. Numerical simulations are performed for independent polarization and single-mode propagation of a rectangular waveguide and bent waveguide with various geometries. The polarization dependence of the AWG device is successfully suppressed by controlling the relative index difference (Δ n ) between the core and the cladding, ratio between the core width and thickness (a/b), and bent radius of arrayed waveguides, considering practical technical error. The transmission characteristics of two AWGs for two parameter groups of Δ n = 1%, a / b = 2 and Δ n = 0.8%, a / b = 1.5, show the wavelength shift of 3.5 and 0.02 nm, respectively. The later group of data, which is used in our work, strongly supports the optimum design that we have identified for the birefringence suppression.
