Abstract:We have designed and fabricated a vertically coupled polymer thermo-optic switch. It consists of two waveguides laid in different but parallel layers with one waveguide crossing over the other, and an electrode heater on top. Preliminary results exhibited a switching extinction ratio greater than 23 dB and the power consumption in the heating electrode is lower than 50 mW. The switching time is about 2 ms. More significantly, the switching extinction ratio is relatively wavelength independent.

Abstract:This paper presents a detailed design and fabrication of a composite broadband polymer vertically coupled optical switch with a spectral extinction ratio variation less than 1 dB for the cross state and 2.5 dB for the bar state. This switch consists of two pairs of basic three-dimensional (3-D) polymer switches with peak coupling wavelengths located at the two ends of the C-band, respectively. The resultant extinction ratio is shown to be the sum of the individual ratios of the two basic switches that the optical signal propagates through. The rise time and fall time of switching are 1.0 and 1.5 ms, respectively, and the total electric power applied to the electrode heater is about 140 mW.
The Design of a Directional Coupled Electro-optical Switch Based on the Polymeric Waveguide

Abstract:A design of directional coupler based polymeric electro-optical switch is presented, focusing on the reduction of both wavelength dependence and the sensitivity of optical characteristics to coupling length. A optimized configuration of the switch was found with a < 0.3 dB insertion loss variation for the coupling length to change from 3800 to 4300 μm, making it feasible to form the polymer structure on silicon substrate by rubber molding process or other rapid printing techniques. The characteristics of the optical switch were analyzed by BPM simulations and an insertion loss as low as 0.4~0.6 dB was obtained, along with a crosstalk of -32 dB and a PDL of 0.08 dB. The driving voltage was found to be 42 V when r33 = 14 pm/V.

Abstract:For the high absorption loss of the Electro-optic (EO) polyrners, there are only a few reports on polymeric EO switches. This paper presents a new design and fabrication method of the polymer 1x2 Mach-Zehnder Interference (MZI) switch operating at 1550nm. The switch is consists of two vertically coupled waveguides located at different levels. And it will be easier to fabricate by traditional technology. The finite difference Beam Propagation Method (BPM) has been used to analyze the device propagation characteristics. The result indicated that the propagation loss of this Three-dimensional (3-D) switch is decreased 2dB by that of the ordinary two-dimensional (2-D) switch. And this kind of structure has high potential for the application of low-loss optical modulator and attenuator.

Abstract:A novel kind of wavelength-insensitive wide-spectrum polymer electro-optic (EO) switch is proposed by employing two symmetric active Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs), a passive middle directional coupler and a pair of passive phase-generating couplers. Extinction ratio compensation condition under off-state and insertion loss compensation condition under on-state are derived to expand wavelength spectrum. With sufficient consideration of the wavelength dispersion of material and waveguide, optimization, and simulation were performed. The switch exhibits a switching voltage of 4.96 V with each MZI EO region length of 5000 mu m. An S-C-L band (1460 to 1625 nm) covering a wide-spectrum more than 165 nm was obtained, and within this range, an extremely high extinction ratio more than 40 dB and an insertion loss within 1.8 to 11.9 dB were reached. This spectrum was more than 8 times of that of the traditional MZI EO switch (only 20 nm). The proposed device can function normally at any wavelength, and is an ideal candidate for a broadband photonic switching element in next-generation nonwavelength selective optical networks-on-chip. Abstract:One kind of electro-optic polymer assisted Mach–Zehnder optical switch based on silicon slot structure is presented in this paper. The interference arms of the switch are slot structures instead of regular single-mode waveguides. By filling electro-optic material in the void slot of the arms, direct electro-optic modulation can be introduced. Theoretical model and detailed analysis are given in this paper. The length-independent product VπL is about 74mVcm when slot width is 100nm, and 37mVcm when slot width is 50nm, when the polymer with a electro-optical coefficient of γ33=130pm/V is assisted. An ultralow energy consumption of only 37fJ/bit is achievable, and the turn-on time of the switch is less than 1.5ps.

Abstract:In this paper, a non-volatile polarization-insensitive 1×2 silicon optical switch utilizing phase-change materials is presented. The presented device is composed of three polarization beam combiners/splitters, two directional couplers with phase change materials, and a polarization-insensitive waveguide crossing. By adjusting the phase state of phase-change material, polarization-insensitive switching behavior is realized. As an example, the proposed switch using Ge2Sb2Te5 is comprehensively optimized and analyzed based on particle swarm optimization algorithm and finite difference time domain method. The designed device can have a crosstalk of less than −15.98 dB and an insertion loss of smaller than 0.95 dB over the C-band in the case of TE polarization, while a maximum crosstalk of −13.53 dB and a maximum insertion loss of 1.37 dB can be obtained within the C-band in the case of TM polarization.

Abstract:A polymer directional coupler (DC) electro-optic switch with push-pull electrodes and rib waveguides is designed based on the conformal transforming method, image method, coupled mode theory, and electro-optic modulation theory. Its structure and principle are described, the design and optimization are performed, and the characteristics are analyzed,including the coupling length, switching voltage, output power, insertion loss, and crosstalk. To realize normal switching function, the fabrication tolerance, wavelength shift, and coupling loss between a single mode fiber (SMF) and the waveguide are discussed. Simulation results show that the coupling length is 3082μm; the push-pull switching voltage is 2.14V;and the insertion loss and crosstalk are less than 1.14 and -30dB, respectively. The proposed analytical technique on waveguides and electrodes is proven to be accurate and computationally efficient when compared with the beam propagation method (BPM) and the experimental results.

Abstract:A novel polymer-based switch array using a vertical waveguide structure is introduced to meet the ongoing requirements of smaller and higher integrated optical circuits. The 1x3 and 2x3 electro-optic (EO) switch arrays with the vertical waveguide structure configuration are numerically simulated based on the beam propagation method (BPM). The influences of different parameters including the length of coupler, the distance between the contiguous lower channels, the distance between the contiguous upper channels and the angle of the upper channel on the performance of the switch array are also discussed. The simulation results show that the present configuration can provide better performance on the 2 x 3 EO switch array.

Abstract:Optical polymer is one of the promising materials for photonic integrated devices that can be processed with simple, flexible and semiconductor compatible technology. Especially, optical polymer with the advantages of high thermo-optic (TO) and electro-optic (EO) coefficients has been widely applied in optical waveguide switches. However, most of the current optical switches are independent with single function. It is essential to develop an on-chip integrated device with multilayer for signal manipulation. In this paper, we propose an on-chip 3-dimensional integrated optical switch based on the EO polymer-clad waveguide incorporate with the TO tunable vertical coupler. The proposed integrated optical switch could realize the function-integration of the adjustable 3D optical connection and the high-speed modulation. A typical fabricated switch shows an insertion loss of 16.3 dB and an extinction ratio of 16.0 dB at the driving power of 48.2 mW. The dynamic characteristics of TO and EO switching functions of the device were also measured in this work.

Abstract:A polarization-insensitive flexible-grid wavelength-selective switch using silicon-based double-series coupled microring resonators and polarization splitter-rotators are presented, optimized, and experimentally demonstrated. In the cases of TE and TM polarizations, the transmission spectra with tunable bandwidths are generated at the output ports as long as the phase shifters and double-series coupled microring resonators are rationally controlled. Measurement results show that, as the wavelength-channel spacing Δλ is 0.80 nm, the fabricated device working at TE polarization can have a crosstalk less than -15.01 dB, an extinction ratio greater than 28.11 dB, an in-band ripple smaller than 0.91 dB, and a 3-dB bandwidth ranging from 0.56 to 1.98 nm, while in the case of TM polarization, the corresponding crosstalk and in-band ripple are less than -14.86 and 0.83 dB, extinction ratio is larger than 27.30 dB, and 3-dB bandwidth ranges from 0.57 to 1.96 nm. The response time is measured to be 11.23 μs

Abstract:By using the conformal transformation, method of images, electro-optic modulation theory and coupled mode theory, an optimum design is performed, and the characteristics are analyzed for a polymer directional coupler electro-optic switch with a rib waveguide structure. The simulation results show that the coupling length is about 4420 µm, and the switching voltage is about 16.2 V for the operation wavelength 1550 nm. Under the operation voltages of 0 and 16.2 V, the insertion loss and the crosstalk of the coupling region are less than 0.30 and − 20 dB within the ranges of the wavelength from 1520 to 1580 nm and the coupling region length from 4130 to 4710 µm.

Abstract:100-GHz cross-cascaded arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs)-based wavelength selective optical switching optical cross-connects (OXCs) modules with Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) thermo-optic (TO) variable optical attenuator (VOA) arrays and optical true-time-delay (TTD) line arrays is successfully designed and fabricated using polymer photonic lightwave circuit. Highly fluorinated photopolymer and grafting modified organic-inorganic hybrid material were synthesized as the waveguide core and cladding, respectively. The one-chip transmission loss is ~6 dB and the crosstalk is less than ~30 dB for the transverse-magnetic (TM) mode. The actual maximum modulation depths of different thermo-optic switches are similar, ~15.5 dB with 1.9 V bias. The maximum power consumption of a single switch is less than 10 mW. The delay time basic increments are measured from 140 to 20 ps. Proposed novel module is flexible and scalable for the dense wavelength division multiplexing network.

Abstract:A three-dimensional (3D) polymer thermo-optic (TO) 1×4 waveguide switch matrix based on vertical couplers is demonstrated. It consists of four basic 3D switch units and because of its 3D structure, its construction is compact, only 9 mm in length; moreover, the control logic of the entire switch is very simple, the light signal can be easily switched to any output port by operating only a single switch unit. The finished devices exhibit a switching extinction ratio greater than 21 dB for all of four output ports and the crosstalk between two adjacent output ports is lower than -19 dB. The rise time and the fall time of the switch matrix are 0.8 ms and 1.4 ms, respectively. The required electrical power to initiate the switching function for all switching units is about 50 mW.

Abstract:A new semiconductor laser structure with digitally switchable wavelength is proposed. The device comprises two coupled c. avities with different optical path lengths, which form V-shaped branches with a reflective 2x2 half-wave optical coupler at the closed end. The reflective 2x2 coupler is designed to have a pi-phase difference between crosscoupling and self-coupling so as to produce synchronous power transfer functions. High single-mode selectivity is achieved by optimizing the coupling coefficient. The switchable wavelength range is greatly increased by using Vernier effect. Using deep-etched trenches as partial reflectors, additional waveguide branch structures are used outside the laser cavities to form a complete Mach-Zehnder interferometer, allowing space switching, variable attenuation, or high speed modulation to be realized simultaneously. Abstract:Optical mode switch is a key device for reconfigurable mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) technique. Here, an ultra-broadband 1×2 mode switch based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder interferometer and asymmetric Y-branch is proposed. The input E00 or E10 mode will be converted to E00 mode and switched between two output ports by changing the working state of electrode. When E00 mode is launched, the measured insertion loss of fabricated switch is 3.3 dB (off-state)/3.4 dB (on-state), and corresponding crosstalk is −18.8 dB (off-state)/−16.1 dB (on-state) at 1550 nm, respectively. Due to the adoption of polymer with high thermo-optic coefficient as the waveguide material, the measured switching power is 10.3 mW. The captured far-field output mode patterns prove the wavelength independence of proposed mode switch within the range from 1500 to 1630 nm. This broadband operation mode switch has potentials in wavelength-division-multiplexing & MDM complex systems, as well as cost-effective low-end switching applications.

Abstract:Owing to the waveguide birefringence in most photonic integrated circuits, optical switches are typically sensitive to the light state of polarization (SOP). In certain application scenarios, optical switches are required to process light signals with random SOPs from single-mode fibers. This study presents a method to achieve polarization-insensitive optical switches based on mode-insensitive devices after transforming the fundamental mode of one polarization component in randomly polarized light into a high-order mode of its orthogonal polarization, without extra power consumption or significant size increase. For 2 x 2 silicon-based thermo-optic switches, the measured polarization-dependent losses (PDLs) in both CROSS and BAR states were less than 0.4 dB at a wavelength of 1315 nm. Ranging from 1309 to 1339 nm, the PDLs were less than 0.9 dB. A 4 x 4 optical switch was also experimentally demonstrated, whose PDLs for all routing paths in all BAR and CROSS states were less than 1.2 dB at a wavelength of 1334 nm. This method can potentially be used to construct polarization-insensitive on-chip integrated photonic systems for applications in fields such as optical communications and optical interconnections.
Fluorinated Photopolymer Waveguide Thermo-Optic Switches with Loss-Compensation Function Based on Erbium-Containing Cladding Structure.

Abstract:In this work, a novel polymer thermo-optic switch with loss compensation function is successfully designed and fabricated by direct UV-writing technology. The waveguide core and cladding layer material of the switch are based on the low-loss fluorinated photopolymer and erbium-containing gain copolymer. The absorption loss characteristics and thermal stabilities of the core and cladding materials are studied. The optimal optical field distribution for loss-compensation structures is analyzed by modifying refractive index difference between the core and cladding. The thermo-optic modulation effect of the optical signal transmission for the device is simulated. The insertion loss of the switch device is about 6 dB. The switching rise and fall time are 396.2 μs and 461.2 μs applied by 500 Hz square-wave voltage, respectively. The switching power is 6.5 mW, the extinction ratio of the switch is about 14 dB. The loss-compensation value of the entire chip is obtained as 1.9 dB at 1530 nm wavelength. The flexible loss-compensation multi-functional waveguide switch is appropriate for incorporation in large-scale opti-electronic integrated circuits.

Abstract:A packaged polymer electro-optic switch using double-section reversed electrodes based on the Y-fed coupler structure is investigated in terms of the conformal transforming method, image method, coupled mode theory and electro-optic modulation theory. The structure and principle are described, and unique formulations are proposed for simulating the device, including the amplitude transfer matrix, propagation powers and output powers. Design and optimization are performed, and characteristics are analyzed. Under the central operation wavelength of 1550 nm, the coupling region length is 4391.5 µm, the driving voltages of the upper and lower branches are as low as +0.633 and −0.633 V, respectively; the insertion loss and crosstalk are less than 2.04 and −30 dB, respectively, within the relative large ranges of fabrication error and wavelength shift. The proposed analysis and formulations are proved to be sufficiently accurate by comparison with the beam propagation method (BPM). The designed switch with the above waveguide and electrode structure shows lower switching voltage compared to our previous reported switches.
