Abstract:Optical second harmonic generation is a fundamental nonlinear effect with a large impact on laser technology and optical imaging/sensing. For most practical applications of second harmonic generation, high conversion efficiency is required. However, many techniques used to achieve high efficiency are limited to fabrication methods and optical energy requirements. Here, we investigate and demonstrate substantial enhancement in the conversion efficiency of second harmonic generation in a nonlinear crystal via the application of wavefront shaping. In a one dimensional understanding of second harmonic generation, a phase offset applied to the fundamental wave has no effect on the intensity of the generated light. We show that when the pump field is not a plane wave, enhanced conversion efficiency can be controlled by the application of a phase mask to the fundamental beam. This investigation of the dependence of conversion efficiency upon the transverse phase profile of the incident pump laser yields the promise of new ways to enhance nonlinear generation with limited optical energy and without the need for specific fabrication techniques.

Abstract:Dual-chirp waveform, as a type of wideband radar signal that can improve the range-Doppler resolution in radar system has been studied widely. In this paper, a photonic scheme for generation of frequency- and bandwidth-doubling dual-chirp waveform is proposed and experimental demonstrated. An integrated dual-parallel MZM is applied, where a microwave signal and a single-chirp signal are modulated, biasing at null and full points, respectively. An electrical rather than optical band-pass filter that used in the system can reduce the complexity. Experimental results perform the generated dual-chirp waveforms with frequency of 6 GHz and bandwidth of 2 GHz. The time-bandwidth product is about 154.2. Potentially, this approach can be a method for high frequency, large bandwidth and long duration dual-chirp waveforms generation.

Abstract:Third harmonic can be realized by the coupled second-harmonic (ω1 + ω1 → ω2) and sum-frequency (ω1 + ω2 → ω3) generation. However, in quasi-phase matching conditions, the efficiency of third harmonic is usually low due to the larger coupling coefficient ratio. In this paper, the third-harmonic generation in a periodically poled LiTaO3 has been experimentally studied, where the electro-optic effect was employed to manipulate the phase mismatches and energy distribution of the coupled waves. With the DC electric field varying from 0 to 140 V/mm, the output of third harmonic can be enhanced from about 95 to 312 mW. The method provides a simple and convenient way to control the efficiencies of frequency conversion.

Abstract:An effective approach is proposed to broaden the spectrum of high-efficiency second harmonic generation in a one-dimensional photonic crystal based on the cascaded structure. By controlling the thickness of the joint layer, it is possible to realize a flat-top or quasiflat-top impurity band centered at the fundamental wavelength due to mode splitting effect in coupled cavities. Simulation results reveal that the spectrum of generated second harmonic exhibits a hump-like or multi-peak profile with wavelength tuning. It is a salient feature that the spectral stability of efficiency enhancement could be greatly improved compared to the conventional Lorentzian profile while maintaining an ultrahigh Q factor. Such merit of spectra re-shaping can significantly relax the stringent requirements for ultrahigh-Q microcavities in practical applications, e.g. fabrication inaccuracy, thermal variation, and wavelength detuning.

Abstract:We propose a simple means for improving optical beam quality with second-harmonic generation. By creating spatial walk-off in aperiodic quasi-phase-matching gratings, we show that the harmonic beam experiences a spatial phase shift that can be engineered to correct for arbitrary phase distortions. The second harmonic emission is a vortex beam with radial polarization and exhibits highly directional far-field emission in normal direction.

Abstract:We propose the method for broadening the angular acceptance bandwidth of quasi-phase-matched (QPM) frequency doubling by using nearly ideal temperature QPM (NIT-QPM). By NIT-QPM we mean that the crystal temperature is not controlled at the temperature, which satisfies the collinear phase matching condition and is termed ideal temperature, but near it. The scalar analysis on periodically poled MgO doped of stoichiometric lithium tantalate (PP-MgO: SLT) second-harmonic generation (SHG) shows that, for single-pass extracavity frequency doubling, the angular acceptance bandwidth of NIT-QPM with a lower temperature would be greater than that of ideal temperature QPM (IT-QPM) which is usually used. In the experiment, the angular acceptance bandwidth of PP-MgO: SLT SHG is broadened from 4.6° to 6.4° when the heating oven temperature falls from the ideal temperature to a lower temperature.

Abstract:With plane-wave expansion and the Green function method, the second harmonic generation in a two-dimensional metal photonic band gap (PBG) material is studied theoretically. By appropriately selecting the structural parameters of the PBG material, the wave vectors of the fundamental and the second harmonics can be set at the edges of the PBG. In this case, the second harmonic can be realized efficiently due to metal surface nonlinearity. The discussion can be generalized to three-dimensional systems.

Abstract:We report a type of quasi-phase-matched (QPM) Cerenkov third-harmonic generation (CTHG) in a periodic-poled LiTaO3 waveguide. The CTHG results from a guided-to-guided second-harmonic generation cascaded with a guided-to-radiated sum-frequency generation (SFG) in the waveguide. In the guided-to-radiated SFG process, nonlinear interactions with participating and nonparticipating reciprocal vectors would lead to different CTHG radiations. In addition, the power and temperature detuning characters of QPM CTHG were studied. Theoretical predictions were in good agreement with experimental results. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The second-harmonic generation (SHG) from the doubly-resonant metasurfaces composed of the U-shaped and the rectangular apertures on an optically opaque gold film is investigated theoretically. By engineering the fundamental plasmonic resonances of the composite metasurfaces to match the excitation and the second-harmonic wavelengths, respectively, the doubly-resonant enhanced SHG intensity of almost an order of magnitude is obtained, compared with the singly-resonant U-apertures. In addition, the satisfaction of doubly-resonant condition can be extended to a wide wavelength range by changing the refractive index of the surrounding medium, which benefits from the two fundamental plasmonic resonances oscillating at frequencies of a two-fold relationship. Our work provides a new way to enhance the efficiency of nonlinear harmonic generation.
Broadband second harmonic generation in whispering gallery mode resonators

Abstract:Optical frequency conversion processes in nonlinear materials are limited in wavelength by the accessible phase matching and the required high pump powers. In this letter, we report a novel broadband phase matching (PM) technique in high quality factor (Q) whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators made of birefringent crystalline materials. This technique relies on two interacting WGMs, one with constant and the other with spatially oscillating phase velocity. Thus, phase matching occurs cyclically. The technique can be implemented with a WGM resonator with its disk plane parallel to the optic axis of the crystal. With a single beta barium borate (BBO) resonator in that configuration, we experimentally demonstrated efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) to harmonic wavelengths from 780 nm in the near infrared to 317 nm in the ultraviolet (UV). The observed SHG conversion efficiency is as high as 4.6% (mW)-1. This broadband PM technique opens a new way for nonlinear optics applications in WGM resonators. This work is also the first reported continuous wave UV generation by direct SHG in a WGM resonator

Abstract:A method of tailoring the electromagnetic states in photonic band-gap structures was used in designing a dielectric structure optimized for third-harmonic generation. The structure we considered was a stack of several kinds of χ(2) nonlinear bilayers approximately 10 μm in length. In the theoretical analysis and numerical experiment, a conversion efficiency enhancement of more than 14 orders of magnitude, as compared with that in a normal conventional setup of two crystals, was found. The possibility of efficient third-harmonic generation in a single structure of χ(2) materials and the phenomenal enhancement of the conversion efficiency show that the electromagnetic state control in photonic band-gap structures offers great potential in nonlinear optics.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate continuous tuning of central wavelength and bandwidth of second harmonic generation and optical parametric amplification, using a periodically poled lithium tantalate with fanshaped grating. The temperature tolerance is enlarged to more than 10 degrees C in the second harmonic generation. In the optical parametric amplification, the central wavelength can be tuned from 900 nm to 1300 nm, and bandwidth is enlarged from 4.6 nm to 40 nm around 940 nm.

Abstract:Periodically poled lithium niobate (LN) waveguides based on quasi-phase matching schemes, benefiting from their high nonlinear coefficient (d33) and strong optical confinement, are widely employed for implementing efficient second-harmonic generation (SHG). Here, we report broadband SHG in z-cut chirped periodically poled lithium-niobate-on-insulator (CPPLNOI) ridge micro-waveguides. Nearly 90-nm-wide SHG at the telecom band is achieved, along with an averaged normalized efficiency of 7.5%/(W·cm2). We also demonstrate simultaneous generation of second as well as cascaded third and fourth harmonics under direct pumping of femtosecond pulses. This work would benefit applications for frequency conversion of a wideband coherent light source.
