Abstract:Nonlinear optics in whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonators have attracted much attention. Owing to strong confinement of the light in a small volume, a WGM microresonator can dramatically boost the strength of light field, giving rise to enhancement of the nonlinear interactions of light with the resonator material. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG) in an on-chip monocrystalline lithium niobate (LN) microresonator. Benefitting from a cyclic phase matching scheme for the transverse-electric WGMs, nonlinear wavelength conversion utilizing the largest second-order nonlinear coefficient d33, which has not been demonstrated until now despite of its obvious advantage, is successfully achieved in an X-cut LN microresonator. We obtain high conversion efficiencies in not only the SHG (3.8% mW^-1) but also the THG (0.3% mW^-2) realized through a cascaded sum-frequency process. Our results represent a major step toward the classical and quantum photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:We report enhanced optical nonlinear effects at the surface of an ultrahigh-Q silica microcavity functionalized by a thin layer of organic molecules. The maximal conversion efficiency of third harmonic generation reaches similar to 1680%/W-2 and an absolute efficiency of 0.0144% at pump power of similar to 2.90 mW, which is approximately 4 orders of magnitude higher than that in a reported silica microcavity. Further analysis clarifies the elusive dependence of the third harmonic signal on the pump power in previous literature. Molecule-functionalized microcavities may find promising applications in high-efficiency broadband optical frequency conversion and offer potential in sensitive surface analysis.
Boosted Second Harmonic Generation and Cascaded Sum Frequency Generation from a Surface Crystallized Glass Ceramic Microcavity

Abstract:The development of novel materials and structures for efficient second-order nonlinear micro/nano devices remains a significant challenge. In this study, the remarkable enhancement of second-harmonic generation (SHG) and cascaded sum frequency generation in whispering gallery mode microspheres made of surface-crystallized glass with a 6-µm Ba2TiSi2O8 crystal layer are demonstrated. Attributed to the core-shell design, the Ba2TiSi2O8 located on the surface can be efficiently coupled with whispering gallery modes, resulting in a highly efficient micron-scale cavity-enhanced second-order optical nonlinearity. Greatly enhanced SHG of the microcavity is observed, which is up to 80 times stronger than that of a non-resonant sample. Furthermore, owing to the wavelength non-selectivity of random quasi-phase matching, ultra-wideband SHG with a strong response ranging from 860 to 1600 nm and high-contrast polarization characteristics is demonstrated. The glass-ceramic-based microsphere cavity also boosts the cascading optical nonlinearity, manifested by a two-magnitude enhancement of cascaded sum frequency generation. This work delineates an efficient strategy for boosting nonlinear optical response in glass ceramics, which will open up new opportunities for applications in photonics and optical communications.

Abstract:As the rapid development of nonlinear optics, the enhancement of optical third harmonic generation becomes a pop research realm in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, materials science, information science and other fields. In this letter, theoretical analysis on double resonance situation in metallic core-shell nanostructure is performed in order to optimize the efficiency of third harmonic generation. As plenty of cavity modes ranging from visible area to near infrared can be excited efficiently in core-shell nanospheres, kinds of double resonant conditions can be formed by matching two different multipolar cavity modes. Numerical simulations show that the third harmonic generation (THG) intensity in the far field can be enhanced remarkably when the THG signal couples well with the high order cavity mode. More importantly, THG efficiency is optimum from the cavity on double resonant conditions coupling two modes with the same order. The THG intensity differs up to 3 magnitudes on this condition. Subsequent theoretical analysis indicates that changing third-order nonlinear susceptibility of the metal shell while keeping that of the core fixed has almost no effect on THG efficiency. This finding about optimal double resonance has an appreciable effect on optimizing THG in spherical cavity structures.

Abstract:Third-harmonic generation can be realized via both χ(3) and cascaded χ(2) nonlinear processes in a triply-resonant microcavity. It is still unknown how these processes interfere with each other and the optimization of the conversion efficiency still remains as a question. In this work, the interplay between the direct third-harmonic generation and the cascaded process combining of the second-harmonic generation and the sum-frequency generation are investigated. It is found that the interference effect between these two processes can be used to improve the conversion efficiency. By optimizing the cavity resonance and the external coupling conditions, the saturation of the nonlinear conversion is mitigated and the third-harmonic conversion efficiency is increased. A design rule is provided for achieving efficient third-harmonic generation in an optical microcavity, which can be generalized further to the high-order harmonic generations.

Abstract:Aluminum nitride and silicon nitride have recently emerged as important nonlinear optical materials in integrated photonics respectively for their quadratic and cubic optical nonlinearity. A composite aluminum nitride and silicon nitride waveguide structure, if realized, will simultaneously allow highly efficient second and third harmonic generation on the same chip platform and therefore assists 2f-3f self-referenced frequency combs. On-chip third harmonic generation, being a higher order nonlinear optics effect, is more demanding than second harmonic generation due to the large frequency difference between the fundamental and third harmonic frequencies which implies large change of refractive indices and more strigent requirements on phase matching. In this work we demonstrate high-efficiency third harmonic generation in a high Q composite aluminum nitride / silicon nitide ring cavity. By carefully engineering the microring resonator geometry of the bilayer structure to optimize the quality factor, mode volume and modal overlap of the optical fields, we report a maximum conversion efficiency of $180\%\,\mathrm{W^{-2}}$. This composite photonic chip design provides a solution for efficient frequency conversion over a large wavelength span, broadband comb generation and self-referenced frequency combs.

Abstract:Boosting second-order optical nonlinear frequency conversion over subwavelength thickness has long been pursued through optical resonance in micro- and nanophotonics. However, the availability of thin film materials with high second-order nonlinearity is limited to III-V semiconductors, which have low transparency in the visible. Here, we experimentally demonstrated strongly enhanced second harmonic generation in one-dimensional heterostructure cavities on thin film lithium niobate. A guided-mode resonance resonator and distributed Bragg reflectors are combined for both efficient coupling and electromagnetic field localization. Over 1200 times second harmonic generation enhancement is experimentally realized compared with flat thin film lithium niobate through optimizing the trade-off between quality factor and mode volume, leading to a record high normalized conversion efficiency of 2.03 x 10(-5) cm(2)/GW under 1.92 MW/cm(2) pump intensity. Our approach could inspire the miniaturization and integration of compact resonant nonlinear photonic devices on thin film lithium niobate.

Abstract:A method of tailoring the electromagnetic states in photonic band-gap structures was used in designing a dielectric structure optimized for third-harmonic generation. The structure we considered was a stack of several kinds of χ(2) nonlinear bilayers approximately 10 μm in length. In the theoretical analysis and numerical experiment, a conversion efficiency enhancement of more than 14 orders of magnitude, as compared with that in a normal conventional setup of two crystals, was found. The possibility of efficient third-harmonic generation in a single structure of χ(2) materials and the phenomenal enhancement of the conversion efficiency show that the electromagnetic state control in photonic band-gap structures offers great potential in nonlinear optics.

Abstract:We report a type of quasi-phase-matched (QPM) Cerenkov third-harmonic generation (CTHG) in a periodic-poled LiTaO3 waveguide. The CTHG results from a guided-to-guided second-harmonic generation cascaded with a guided-to-radiated sum-frequency generation (SFG) in the waveguide. In the guided-to-radiated SFG process, nonlinear interactions with participating and nonparticipating reciprocal vectors would lead to different CTHG radiations. Abstract:We present a study on photonic vertical cavities consisting of nonlinear materials embedded in photonic crystals (PhCs) for resonantly enhancing second harmonic generation (SHG). Previous attempts at SHG in such structures have been limited to efficiencies of 10$^{-7}$ to 10$^{-5}$, but we demonstrate here a high SHG efficiency of 0.28% by constructing a vertical cavity with a lithium niobate membrane placed between two PhCs, which exhibits high quality resonances. Our results open up new possibilities for compact laser frequency converters that could have a revolutionary impact on the fields of nonlinear optics and photonics.

Abstract:We report a giant enhancement of the third harmonic generation (THG) at 343 nm by periodically notched silicon waveguide arrays supporting guided mode resonances (GMRs) at 1030 nm. Maximum efficiency of the third harmonic generation η = 7.71 × 10−5 is achieved with a peak pump power density of 5.31 GW/cm2. The enhancement factor of the THG from the GMR metasurface reaches up to 1.3 × 107 compared to a flat silicon film with the same thickness. This observation demonstrates a promising approach to design high-efficiency nonlinear optical metasurfaces.

Abstract:A high-quality plasmon-fiber cavity in a doubly resonant configuration can exhibit second-harmonic generation (SHG) with over 5 orders of magnitude enhancement compared to gold nanoparticles on a fused silica substrate. Through coupling to a fiber cavity with the proper diameter, a high-quality (Q ≈ 160) resonance can be achieved in combination with a single gold nanoparticle. In a classical picture, where the incident electric field travels coherently Q times around the fiber during the nonlinear process, the high Q of the coupled mode aids in highly efficient SHG. We accomplish two feats: First, we analyze the Q factor dependence of the SHG efficiency, proving the expected Q4 dependence and thus confirming coherent E-field amplification in the fiber cavity. Second, we carefully adjust the fiber size further and tune the plasmon response of a gold nanoparticle to a high-Q cavity mode. We make sure that the second harmonic wavelength is simultaneously in resonance with a higher order fiber cavity mode, fulfilling the doubly resonant condition. As a result, a giant SH response with conversion efficiency up to 1.6 × 10-5 is detected upon a pump intensity of 5 × 108 W/cm2 for 100 fs pump pulses around 840 nm incident wavelength. Additionally, the importance of the doubly resonant condition is proven by detuning the size of the fiber, which leads to a drastic drop in SHG efficiency. This disparity of the SHG efficiency can be observed even by eye, when monitoring the intensity changes of the visible SH light during detuning.

Abstract:We report a large enhancement of third-harmonic generation in the one-dimensional dielectric photonic-crystal-based amorphous nanocavity. The enhancement took place at the frequency of defect mode and was a pure χ(3) nonlinear process. A great increase of third-harmonic intensity up to approximately five orders of magnitude was demonstrated, which was attributed to field localization in the range of nanocavity.

Abstract:We manipulated the simulation and apparatus to generate the entangled quantum photons by the enhanced higher quality factor in waveguide of whispering gallery mode resonator in silica microsphere. As the several nonlinear optics effects have been validated in micro-disk (lithium niobate materials based), others micro-cavity (microfiber and micro ring on the chip) and second harmonic generation (SHG) on the surface of silica microsphere because of the characterization of enhanced higher quality factor Q and smaller volume mode in these resonator. However until now for the second third nonlinearity of spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC), third order nonlinearity of spontaneous parametric down conversion (TOSPDC) and spontaneous four wave mixing (SFWM) in whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonator of silica microsphere rarely have not been fully investigated and verified to generate the triple and pair entangled photons where are widely applied on the applications of biosensor, quantum communications and spectroscopy, respectively. Specially, the features of silica microsphere have attracted many applications due to the simple fabrication, simplified materials melted by silica fiber. The work we demonstrated in this paper based on the breaking of the dispersion rules to make perfect phase matching in normal dispersion in silica microsphere depending on the blue laser spectrum in visible spectrum, then manipulated the modified size of microsphere to detune the pump laser of free spectral range (FSR) and both shift the geometrical dispersion are characterized in the variation of FSR given by (see PDF for equation), where n is refractive index, R is the microspheres radius and m is mode numbers in resonator, to compensate the materials dispersion given by (see PDF for equation), where c is the speed of light and λ is pump laser wavelength to fulfill the perfect phase matching in parametric down conversion regimes and the modeling fabrication coupling results also will be presented.

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess large second-order optical nonlinearity, making them ideal candidates for miniaturized on-chip frequency conversion devices, all-optical interconnection, and optoelectronic integration components. However, limited by subnanometer thickness, the monolayer TMD exhibits low second harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency (<0.1%) and poor directionality, which hinders their practical applications. Herein, we proposed a Fabry-Perot (F-P) cavity formed by coupling an atomically thin WS2 film with a silicon hole matrix to enhance the SH emission. A maximum enhancement (similar to 1580 times) is achieved by tuning the excitation wavelength to be resonant with the microcavity modes. The giant enhancement is attributed to the strong electric field enhancement in the F-P cavity and the oscillator strength enhancement of excitons from suspended WS2. Moreover, directional SH emission (divergence angle similar to 5 degrees) is obtained benefiting from the resonance of the F-P microcavity. Our research results can provide a practical sketch to develop both high-efficiency and directional nonlinear optical devices for silicon-based on-chip integration optics.

Abstract:Achieving efficient and intense second-harmonic generation (SHG) in the terahertz (THz) spectrum holds great potential for a wide range of technical applications, including THz nonlinear functional devices, wireless communications, and data processing and storage. However, the current research on THz harmonic emission primarily focuses on inorganic materials, which often offers challenges in achieving both efficient and broadband SHG. Herein, the remarkable efficiency of organic materials in producing THz harmonics is studied and demonstrated, thereby opening up a new avenue for searching candidates for frequency-doubling devices in the THz band. By utilizing DAST, DSTMS, and OH1 crystals, we showcase their superior frequency conversion capabilities when pumped by the narrowband THz pulses centered at 2.4, 1.6, and 0.8 THz. The SHG spans a high-frequency THz domain of 4.8 THz, achieving an unprecedented conversion efficiency of similar to 1.21% while maintaining a perturbative nonlinear response. The highly efficient SHG of these materials is theoretically analyzed by considering the combined effects of dispersion, phonon absorption, polarization, and the nonlinear susceptibility of organic crystals. This work presents a promising platform for efficient THz frequency conversion and generation across a wide range of frequencies, offering new opportunities for novel nonlinear THz applications in next-generation electronics and optics.
Enhancement of 3rd-harmonics generation during ultrashort pulse diffraction in multi-layer volume-grating

Abstract:Successful phase-matching methods for Third Harmonics Generation (THG) include phase-matching in birefringent crystal and quasi-phase-matching (QPM) in crystal with periodically poled domains. However, these methods are not feasible in some isotropic materials (e.g. fused silica and photosensitive silicate glass). It was known that volume-grating in isotropic materials can independently generate frequency-converted waves. One of disadvantages of single-layer volume-grating is that the brightness of harmonic emission can not be enhanced by increasing the grating thickness. In this paper, a THG device with stratified sub-gratings was designed to enhance THG in isotropic materials: several sub-gratings were arranged parallel, and the grating-figures misalignment between neighboring sub-gratings was pre-fabricated. In terms of extension of interaction length in THG, our multi-layer sub-grating is formally equivalent to the multi-layer periodically poled crystal (e.g. lithium niobate) in conventional QPM approach. According to the calculation results, the N-layer (N >2) can, in principle, generate TH output intensity of N*N times stronger than single-layer volume-grating does, also compared to N times stronger than N-layer without figures-misalignment. The effect of random fabrication error in grating thickness on normalized conversion efficiency was discussed.
