Abstract:Nonlinear optics in whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonators have attracted much attention. Owing to strong confinement of the light in a small volume, a WGM microresonator can dramatically boost the strength of light field, giving rise to enhancement of the nonlinear interactions of light with the resonator material. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG) in an on-chip monocrystalline lithium niobate (LN) microresonator. Benefitting from a cyclic phase matching scheme for the transverse-electric WGMs, nonlinear wavelength conversion utilizing the largest second-order nonlinear coefficient d33, which has not been demonstrated until now despite of its obvious advantage, is successfully achieved in an X-cut LN microresonator. We obtain high conversion efficiencies in not only the SHG (3.8% mW^-1) but also the THG (0.3% mW^-2) realized through a cascaded sum-frequency process. Our results represent a major step toward the classical and quantum photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:With the rapid development of optical communication and quantum information, the demand for efficient and broadband nonlinear frequency conversion has increased. At present, most single-frequency conversion processes in lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) waveguides suffer from lateral leakage without proper design, leading to an additional increase in propagation loss. Achieving broadband frequency conversion also encounters this problem in that there are no relevant works that have solved this yet. In this paper, we theoretically propose an efficient and flat broadband second harmonic generation (SHG) in silicon nitride loaded apodized chirped periodically poled LNOI waveguides. By using a bound states in the continuum (BICs) mechanism to reduce the propagation loss and utilizing the characteristic that the BICs are insensitive to wavelength, an ultra-low-loss wave band of 80 nm is realized. Then, by employing an apodized chirped design, a flat broadband SHG is achieved. The normalized conversion efficiency (NCE) is approximately 222%W−1cm−2, and the bandwidth is about 100 nm. Moreover, the presented waveguides are simple and can be fabricated without direct etching of lithium niobate, exhibiting excellent fabrication tolerance. Our work may open a new avenue for exploring low-loss and flat broadband nonlinear frequency conversion on various on-chip integrated photonic platforms.

Abstract:The realization of an efficient nonlinear parametric process in microresonators is a challenging issue largely because of an inherent difficulty in simultaneously ensuring the phase-matching condition and a coherent multiple-resonance condition for all the waves participating in the nonlinear conversion process. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second-harmonic generation in an on-chip LiNbO3 microresonator fabricated by femtosecond-laser direct writing. We overcome the above difficulty by selectively exciting high-order modes in the fabricated thin-disk microresonator. Thanks to the low optical absorption and high nonlinear optical coefficient of LiNbO3 crystal, we achieve a normalized conversion efficiency of 1.106 x 10(-3)/mW in the on-chip LiNbO3 microdisk with a diameter of approximately 102 mu m.

Abstract:Second harmonic generation (SHG), one of the most significant χ(2) nonlinear optical processes, plays a crucial role in a wide variety of optical and photonic applications. Designing various delicate schemes to achieve highly efficient SHG has become a long‐standing and challenging topic in nonlinear optics. Despite numerous success on SHG based on birefringent phase‐matching and quasi‐phase‐matching, so far, modal phase‐matching (MPM) for SHG in tightly light‐confined structures has still in its infancy. Here, a new scheme is proposed to realize efficient SHG via MPM by using a nanophotonic LiNbO3 thin‐film waveguide consists of two bonded layers with internally reversed polarizations. In such a dual‐layer ridge waveguide based on lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI), upon optical excitation at 1574.6 nm, SHG is observed at 787.3 nm with a high conversion efficiency of 5540% W−1 cm−2 experimentally. This work advances the understanding on modal phase‐matched SHG and other quadratic optical nonlinear processes, offering additional strategies for developing high‐performance nonlinear photonic devices in on‐chip platforms. A new scheme is proposed to realize efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) via modal phase matching by using a nanophotonic thin‐film LiNbO3 waveguide with internally bonded two layers of reverse polarization. The modulation of material polarization of the two bonded layers results in continuously enhanced SHG from fundamental to second harmonic light of diverse‐order modes in the nano‐waveguide. SHG is experimentally observed at 787.3 nm with a high conversion efficiency of 5540% W−1 cm−2.

Abstract:Second-harmonic generation (SHG) is widely used for wavelength conversions in various applications including multi-wavelength lasers, imaging, and ultrafast optics. However, it remains a long-standing challenge to achieve both a broad SHG bandwidth and high efficiency due to the medium dispersion. Here, we propose an ultrabroadband efficient SHG on a lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) platform by dispersion engineering. The waveguide cross section with two V-shaped grooves is carefully designed to minimize first- and second-order dispersion, which is feasible for current fabrication techniques. Due to the flattened dispersion, a record-high, to our knowledge, bandwidth-length product ( Δ λ ⋅ L ) of 2444 µ m 2 is achieved in a periodically poled 1.64-cm-long LNOI waveguide, which is four times the previously reported result. Such a scheme can also be generalized to SHG waveguides on other material platforms. Our results provide a new strategy of dispersion engineering for integrated photonics, and may be helpful for applications including frequency doubling, supercontinuum generation, and optical frequency combs.

Abstract:In this Letter, we report thermo-optic tunable and efficient second-harmonic generation (SHG) based on an X-cut periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide. By applying an on-chip heater with thermo-isolation trenches and combining a type-0 quasi-phase matching mechanism, we experimentally achieve a high on-chip SHG conversion efficiency of 2500-3000% W-1 cm-2 and a large tuning power efficiency of 94 pm/mW inside a single 5-mm-long straight PPLN waveguide. Our design is for energy-efficient, high-performance nonlinear applications, such as wavelength conversion, highly tunable coherent light sources, and photon-pair generation.

Abstract:Integrated photonics provides unprecedented opportunities to pursue advanced nonlinear light sources with low-power consumptions and small footprints in a scalable manner, such as microcombs, chip-scale optical parametric oscillators and integrated quantum light sources. Among a variety of nonlinear optical processes, high-efficiency second harmonic generation (SHG) on-chip is particularly appealing and yet challenging. In this work, we present efficient SHG in highly engineerable semi-nonlinear waveguides consisting of electron-beam resist waveguides and thin-film silicon nitride (SiN)/lithium niobate (LN). By carefully designing octave-separating bound states in the continuum (BICs) for the nonlinear interacting waves in such a hybrid structure, we have simultaneously optimized the losses for both fundamental frequency (FF) and second harmonic (SH) waves and achieved modal phasing matching and maximized the nonlinear modal overlap between the FF and SH waves, which results in an experimental conversion efficiency up to 4.05% W −1 cm −2 . Our work provides a versatile and fabrication-friendly platform to explore on-chip nonlinear optical processes with high efficiency in the context of nanophotonics and quantum optics.

Abstract:Quasi-phase-matched interactions in waveguides with quadratic nonlinearities enable highly efficient nonlinear frequency conversion. In this paper, we demonstrate the first generation of devices that combine the dispersion engineering available in nanophotonic waveguides with quasi-phase-matched nonlinear interactions available in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). This combination enables quasi-static interactions of femtosecond pulses, reducing the pulse energy requirements by several orders of magnitude compared to conventional devices, from picojoules to femtojoules. We experimentally demonstrate two effects associated with second harmonic generation (SHG). First, we observe efficient quasi-phase-matched SHG with of pulse energy. Second, in the limit of strong phase-mismatch, we observe spectral broadening of both harmonics with as little as 2 pJ of pulse energy. These results lay a foundation for a new class of nonlinear devices, in which coengineering of dispersion with quasi-phase-matching enables efficient nonlinear optics at the femtojoule level. © 2020 Optical Society of America under the terms of the OSA Open Access Publishing Agreement

Abstract:A double-ridge waveguide is designed for efficient and robust second-harmonic generation (SHG) using the thin-film lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) platform. Perfect phase matching (PhM) is achieved between the fundamental waveguide mode at 1550 nm and a higher-order mode at the second harmonic. The fabrication tolerances of the PhM condition are simulated using a finite-difference method mode solver, and conversion efficiencies as high as 3.92/W are obtained for a 1-cm long waveguide. This design allows access to the largest element of the second-order nonlinear susceptibility tensor, and represents a scalable alternative to waveguides based on periodically-poled lithium niobate (PPLN). The design has the potential for generating pairs of entangled photons in the infrared C-band by spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC).

Abstract:Periodically poled lithium niobate on insulator(LNOI) ridge waveguides are desirable for high-efficiency nonlinear frequency conversions, and the fabrication process of such waveguides is crucial for device performance. In this work, we report fabrication and characterization of locally periodically poled ridge waveguides. Ridge waveguides were fabricated by dry etching, and then the high-voltage pulses were applied to locally poled ridge waveguides. Second harmonic generation with normalized conversion efficiency of 435.5% W -1 ·cm -2 was obtained in the periodically poled LNOI ridge waveguide,which was consistent with the triangular domain structure revealed by confocal microscopy.
Second-harmonic generation with a 440,000% W-1 conversion efficiency in a lithium niobate microcavity without periodic poling

Abstract:Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) enables extremely high-efficiency second-order nonlinear optical effects due to large nonlinear coefficient d33 and strong optical field localization. Here, we first designed and fabricated a pulley-waveguide-coupled microring resonator with an intrinsic quality factor above 9.4 x10^5 on the reverse-polarized double-layer X-cut TFLN. In such a TFLN resonator without fine domain structures, second harmonic generation with an absolute (normalized) conversion efficiency of 30% (440,000% W-1), comparable to that in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) microring resonators, was realized with a sub-microwatt continuous pump. This work reduces the dependence of high-efficiency nonlinear frequency conversion on PPLN microcavities that are difficult to prepare.

Abstract:Thin-film lithium niobate is a promising material platform for integrated nonlinear photonics, due to its high refractive index contrast with the excellent optical properties. However, the high refractive index contrast and correspondingly small mode field diameter limit the attainable coupling between the waveguide and fiber. In second harmonic generation processes, lack of efficient fiber-chip coupling schemes covering both the fundamental and second harmonic wavelengths has greatly limited the overall efficiency. We design and fabricate an ultra-broadband tri-layer edge coupler with a high coupling efficiency. The coupler allows efficient coupling of 1 dB / facet at 1550 nm and 3 dB / facet at 775 nm. This enables us to achieve an ultrahigh overall second harmonic generation normalized efficiency (fiber-to-fiber) of 1027 % W − 1 cm − 2 (on-chip second harmonic efficiency ∼3256 % W − 1 cm − 2) in a 5-mm-long periodically-poled lithium niobate waveguide, which is two to three orders of magnitude higher than that in state-of-the-art devices.

Abstract:Integrated thin-film lithium niobate platform has recently emerged as a promising candidate for next-generation, high-efficiency wavelength conversion systems that allow dense packaging and mass-production. Here we demonstrate efficient, phase-matched second harmonic generation in lithographically-defined thin-film lithium niobate waveguides with sub-micron dimensions. Both modal phase matching in fixed-width waveguides and quasi-phase matching in periodically grooved waveguides are theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Our low-loss (~ 3.0 dB/cm) nanowaveguides possess normalized conversion efficiencies as high as 41% W-1cm-2.

Second harmonic generation with 48% conversion efficiency from cavity polygon modes in a monocrystalline lithium niobate microdisk resonator

Abstract:Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) based optical microresonators offer large nonlinear coefficient d_33 and high light-wave confinement, allowing highly efficient second-order optical nonlinear frequency conversion. Here, we achieved ultra-efficiency second harmonic generation (SHG) from high-Q polygon modes by maximizing the utilization of the highest nonlinear coefficient d_33 in a monocrystalline X-cut TFLN microdisk resonator for the first time. The polygon modes are designed and formed with two parallel sides perpendicular to the optical axis of the lithium niobate crystal by introducing weak perturbations into the microdisk of a tapered fiber, which maximizes the utilization of d_33. The polygon modes exhibit ultrahigh intrinsic Q factors of ~3.86X10(7), due to the fact that polygon modes are located far from the relatively rough sidewall of the microdisk. Moreover, the pump and second harmonic polygon modes share high modal overlap factor of ~80%. Consequently, SHG from cavity polygon modes with absolute conversion efficiency as high as 48.08% was realized at an on-chip pump level of only 4.599 mW without fine domain structures, surpassing the best results (23% and 30%) reported in other two domain-inversion-free phase matching schemes and even approaching the record (52%) in PPLN microresonators.

Symmetric Second-Harmonic Generation in Sub-wavelength Periodically Poled Thin Film Lithium Niobate

Abstract:Second harmonic generation (SHG) extensively employs periodically poled nonlinear crystals through forward quasi-phase-matching to achieve efficient frequency conversion. As poling periods approach sub-micrometers, backward quasi-phase-matching has also been demonstrated, albeit by utilizing pulsed laser drives. The realization of symmetric second harmonic generation, characterized by counterpropagating pumps, however, has remained elusive despite theoretical predictions. The main challenge lies in achieving strong nonlinear coupling with poling period below half the wavelength of the second-harmonic light. The recent emergence of high-quality ferroelectric lithium niobate thin films provides an opportunity for achieving precise domain control at submicron dimensions. In this article, we demonstrate reliable control of ferroelectric domains in thin film lithium niobate waveguide with a poling period down to 370nm, thereby realizing highly efficient continuous-wave pumped symmetric SHG. This demonstration not only validates the feasibility of achieving subwavelength periodic poling on waveguides but also opens new avenues for leveraging submicron ferroelectric domain structures in integrated photonics and nonlinear optics research.

Semi-nonlinear nanophotonic waveguides for highly efficient second-harmonic generation

Abstract:Quadratic optical parametric processes form the foundation for a variety of applications related to classical and quantum frequency conversion, which have attracted significant interest recently in on-chip implementation. These processes rely on phase matching among the interacting guided modes, and refractive index engineering has been a primary approach for this purpose. Unfortunately, the modal phase matching approaches developed so far only produce parametric generation with fairly low efficiencies, due to the intrinsic modal mismatch of spatial symmetries. Here we propose a universal design and operation principle for highly efficient optical parametric generation on integrated photonic platforms. By introducing spatial symmetry breaking into the optical nonlinearity of the device, we are able to dramatically enhance the nonlinear parametric interaction to realize an extremely high efficiency. We employ this approach to design and fabricate a heterogeneous titanium oxide/lithium niobate nanophotonic waveguide that is able to offer second-harmonic generation with a theoretical conversion efficiency as high as 2900% W$^{-1}$cm$^{-2}$, which enables us to experimentally achieve a conversion efficiency of 36.0% W$^{-1}$ in a waveguide only 2.35 mm long, corresponding to a recorded normalized efficiency of 650% W$^{-1}$cm$^{-2}$ that is significantly beyond the reach of conventional modal phase matching approaches. Unlike nonlinearity domain engineering that is material selective, the proposed operation principle can be flexibly applied to any other on-chip quadratic nonlinear platform to support ultra-highly efficient optical parametric interactions, thus opening up a great avenue towards extreme nonlinear and quantum optics with great potentials for broad applications in energy efficient nonlinear and quantum photonic signal processing.

Naturally Phase Matched Lithium Niobate Nanocircuits for Integrated Nonlinear Photonics

Abstract:High complexity, dense integrated nanophotonic circuits possessing strong nonlinearities are desirable for a breadth of applications in classical and quantum optics. In this work, we study natural phase matching via modal engineering in lithium niobate (LN) waveguides and microring resonators on chip for second harmonic generation (SHG). By carefully engineering the geometry dispersion, we observe a $26\%~W^{-1}cm^{-2}$ normalized efficiency for SHG in a waveguide with submicron transverse mode confinement. With similar cross-sectional dimensions, we demonstrate phase matched SHG in a microring resonator with 10 times enhancement on the out-coupled second-harmonic power. Our platform is capable of harnessing the strongest optical nonlinear and electro-optic effects in LN on chip with unrestricted planar circuit layouts. It offers opportunities for dense and scalable integration of efficient photonic devices with low loss and high nonlinearity.

Abstract:We reveal a unique broadband natural quasi-phase-matching (QPM) mechanism underlying an observation of highly efficient second- and third-order harmonic generation at multiple wavelengths in an x-cut lithium niobate (LN) microdisk resonator. For light waves in the transverse-electric mode propagating along the circumference of the microdisk, the effective nonlinear optical coefficients naturally oscillate periodically to change both the sign and magnitude, facilitating QPM without the necessity of domain engineering in the micrometer-scale LN disk. The second-harmonic and cascaded third-harmonic waves are simultaneously generated with normalized conversion efficiencies as high as 9.9%/mW and 1.05%/mW^{2}, respectively, thanks to the utilization of the highest nonlinear coefficient d_{33} of LN. The high efficiency achieved with the microdisk of a diameter of ∼30 μm is beneficial for realizing high-density integration of nonlinear photonic devices such as wavelength convertors and entangled photon sources.
