Abstract:In this Letter, waveguide beam splitters (1 x 3) with type I modifications are fabricated in a LiNbO3 crystal by femtosecond laser direct writing. The influence of the relative positions of three sub-waveguides on power splitting ratios are investigated in detail and the corresponding output intensities as functions of the relative positions in the numerical simulation are plotted, which are in good accordance with the experimental results. In addition, the waveguide beam splitter with a 1:1:1 splitting ratio is fabricated by changing the relative widths of the three branch-waveguides. Guiding performances at 532 nm are measured and analyzed by a typical end-face coupling system. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the beam splitting ratio of the waveguide splitter can be precisely regulated by the positions and widths of the sub-waveguides.

Abstract:A high uniformity and broad bandwidth Y junction optical beam splitter is proposed and analyzed in this paper based on silicon-on-insulator platform. By replacing the uniform branch with the multimode tapered branch, the bandwidth and the power uniformity of two output ports are unproved prominently. Furthermore, the sensitivity to fabrication accuracy is reduced by widening the splitting angle. The simulation and the experimental results confirm that the bandwidth is larger than 100 nm, the power uniformity of two output ports is enhanced 4 dB, whereas the insertion loss is less than 0.6 dB and the return loss is larger than 26 dB, respectively.
An Ultra-Broadband Polarizing Beam Splitter/coupler Using Asymmetric-Waveguides

Abstract:A high-performance polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is demonstrated by using asymmetrical directional couplers on a 220nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonics platform. The extinction ratio of the PBS with cascaded directional couplers is > 35 dB for both TE and TM polarizations around the central wavelength of 1550 nm. The bandwidths for an extinction ratio of 20 dB and 30 dB are 275 nm and 230 nm, respectively, for TE polarization, as well as > 300 nm and 225 nm, respectively, for TM polarization. The insertion losses for TE polarization are < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of > 300 nm. The insertion losses for TM polarization are < 1 dB and < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of 218 nm and 174 nm, respectively.
Ultracompact multiway beam splitters using multiple coupled photonic crystal waveguides

Abstract:Ultracompact 1 x N ( N > 2) beam splitters based on coupling of multiple photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) are numerically demonstrated. The operation of the devices is on the basis of the self-imaging phenomenon. Variation of the effective index of modified rods induces the transverse redistribution of the N-fold images with the same coupling length, and uniform or free splitting can be achieved. The devices with three and four output channels are discussed in details as examples. Results show that this kind of beam splitters are very short. At the operating wavelength of 1.55 mu m, the splitting length of the devices is only 35 mu m even if the output channel number reaches 20. It provides a new method and a compact model to export freely the beam to N channels in PCW devices and can find practical applications in future photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:A fundamental 1 x 2 beam splitter based on directional coupling of flexible optical waveguides is presented. The coupling and transmission characteristics of the beam splitter are investigated by using the plane wave expansion method and finite-difference time-domain method, respectively. Calculated results indicate that, for this beam splitter, without any structural optimization, near-complete transmission is observed within a wide frequency band. Combining the fundamental 1 x 2 beam splitter with flexible optical waveguides, we construct a simple and compact 1 x 4 beam splitter. Those beam splitters are expected to be applied to highly dense photonic integrated circuits. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Power splitters have been widely studied in the fields of radio frequency and integrated photonics, however, conventional splitters generally suffer from poor transmission and limited bandwidth. Here we propose a novel tunable T-shaped power splitter utilizing one-way waveguide that is composed by the yttrium–iron–garnet–air–metal configuration with one static magnetic field applied. We show that the transmission efficiency of such a splitter reaches 100% in the lossless case due to the suppression of reflection by the one-way waveguide. By introducing a defect in the junction area, the splitting ratio of the splitter can be gradually tuned by varying the external magnetic field, and large operation bandwidth can be achieved for a given splitting ratio. Our results presented here focus on the radio frequency, and the concept can easily be applied to the photonic area.

Abstract:The self-imaging effect based on symmetrical interference in multimode layer-by-layer photonic crystal waveguides (PhCWs), is numerically studied with finite-difference time-domain simulations. With the properties of twofold images, a kind of three-dimensional (3D) PhCW-based power splitters with an ultracompact size using complete photonic bandgaps is proposed, calculated, and analyzed. The presented structure can be extended for the design of M×N power splitters for 3D photonic integrated circuits applications.

Abstract:We report on an integrated 1 × 5 beam splitter based on optical waveguides with type I and type II modifications of femtosecond laser (fs-laser) writing in lithium tantalate (LiTaO3) crystal. The cladding waveguides consisting of type-II modified tracks are used for optical signal transmission, photon crosstalk reduction, and mode field regulation. The single-line waveguides with type I modification are utilized for light beam splitting. Type-I single-line waveguides are with relatively weak thermal stability, which are utilized to produce a recoverable and rewritable optical beam splitter, and the structure still possesses good transmission properties after the reconstruction. Especially, the type-I modified waveguides can be rewritten in very short time (1–2 min). The beam splitter shows good performance in outputting programmable optical signals, which provides a possible strategy for the development of erasable photonic data processors.

Abstract:In photonic integrated circuits, information is usually encoded in the optical path. In this work, based on the multi-mode dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide, we numerically design a directional coupler, which can divide the different waveguide eigenmodes into different optical paths. The results show a possibility to encode information onto different waveguide modes. We also experimentally demonstrate that the splitting ratio of this directional coupler structure can be tuned without changing its size.

Abstract:Three single-mode photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) are put together closely to construct three PCWs directional coupler (3PCWDC). It is found that the coupling coefficient of two even modes excited by the input field symmetrically entering 3PCWDC may be increased dramatically by reducing the size scales of dielectric rods between the neighbouring PCWs. The coupling length in this structure can be much shorter than that in conventional PCWs within the frequency range of interest. The application of this feature to an ultracompact, wide bandwidth and high-transmission power splitter is addressed. The simulation results by using the finite-difference time-domain method show that the structure exhibits new interesting characteristics.

Abstract:We propose and simulate a new kind of compact polarizing beam splitter (PBS) based on a photonic crystal ring resonator (PCRR) with complete photonic bandgaps. The two polarized states are separated far enough by resonant and nonresonant coupling between the waveguide modes and the microring modes. Some defect holes are utilized to control the beam propagation. The simulated results obtained by the finite-difference time-domain method show that high transmission (over 95%) is obtained and the polarization separation is realized with a length as short as 3.1 microm. The design of the proposed PBS can be flexible, thanks to the advantages of PCRRs.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the light beam propagation in periodic waveguide arrays which are elaborately modulated with certain structures. We find that the light beam may split, coalesce, deflect, and be localized during propagation in these spatially modulated waveguide arrays. All the phenomena originate from Bloch oscillations, and supply possible method for fabricating on-chip beam splitters and beam combiners.

Abstract:A switchable polarization beam splitter utilizing GST-on-silicon waveguides is introduced and comprehensively investigated in this paper. Based on the phase matching and mode hybridization, structural parameters of the presented device are optimized by using the particle swarm optimization algorithm and finite difference time domain method, so that the output fundamental transverse-electric (TE0) and transverse-magnetic (TM0) modes can be switched by controlling the phase state of GST and the device exhibits broad bandwidth, low crosstalk, and high polarization extinction ratio. For the designed device with the amorphous GST, the crosstalk is lower than -23.40 dB and the polarization extinction ratio is larger than 21.35 dB over the C-band. In the case of the crystalline GST, within the C-band, the crosstalk of less than -27.37 dB and the polarization extinction ratio of greater than 21.37 dB are achieved.

Abstract:The properties of two-fold images, based on asymmetric interference in multimode interference-based photonic crystal waveguides, are numerically studied with finite-difference time-domain simulations. With these image properties, 2 x 2 power splitters (PSs) with an ultracompact size are designed. Arbitrary splitting ratio can be achieved by modifying the sizes (the effective refractive indices) of one pair of rods in the multimode region. As an example, a 3-dB 2 x 2 PS with a size of 24 x 8 mu m(2) is presented with an output efficiency as high as 98%. The method can be extended for the design of M x N PSs for photonic integrated circuits applications.

Abstract:Light-beam-splitting characteristics are theoretically and experimentally studied in 2D squarelattice photonic crystals (PhCs) with delicately designed and modulated output surfaces. Compared with the traditional branch-waveguide and self-collimation-type PhC splitters, our proposed structure can not only split the input light beam into different numbers of branches but also realize the adjustment of their relative light intensities in each branch. Moreover, the influence of a light beam's incident angle on both the output branch beams' relative intensity and propagation direction is investigated. This proposed light beam splitter is able to work within a broad frequency range, and the propagation directions of the output split beams can be modified with the incident beam's frequency. In addition, when the PhC device becomes thicker, a kind of light-beam-focusing phenomenon is observed. Advantageously, our lightbeam-splitting device has no restriction as to the incident light beam's location and width, so it is much more convenient and practical for achieving optical connection with other functional devices in complicated, large-scale, all-optical integrated circuits.

Abstract:In this paper, a polarization beam splitter using a pixelated directional coupler is proposed, designed, and experimentally demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator platform. According to the phase matching, structural parameters for the coupling region consisting of a straight waveguide and a pixelated waveguide are carefully selected by using direct-binary-search optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, and thus the input fundamental transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric modes can be effectively separated from each other in an ultra-compact coupling length. The coupling length of our designed device is only 6 pm. Experimental results reveal that, the measured polarization extinction ratio is greater than 14.22 dB and the corresponding insertion loss is smaller than 1.36 dB within a bandwidth from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-electric polarization, while the measured polarization extinction ratio and insertion loss are respectively larger than 14.47 dB and lower than 1.53 dB from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-magnetic polarization.

Abstract:We designed and demonstrated TE-mode arbitrary power splitters based on adiabatic mode evolution. The power splitters are designed with a footprint of smaller than 12 × 2.9 μm2, fabricated on a 400-nm silicon-on-insulator platform, requiring only a single etch step. The optimization process and the conditions for arbitrary-power splitting are performed using three-dimensional-FDTD simulations. We prove this concept through the fabrication of asymmetrical adiabatic evolution-based power splitters with splitting ratios of 50:50, 60:40, and 70:30. The fabricated devices are shown to agree closely with simulation results. Broadband operation with low insertion loss of 0.11–0.6 dB is demonstrated across the 3.66–3.89 μm wavelength range (230 nm). This component has applications in a multitude of areas such as spectroscopic optical sensing and optical phased arrays photonic integrated circuits etc.

Abstract:The polarization beam splitter is a key component for polarization manipulation in photonic integrated circuits,but it is challenging to design for low-refractive-index optical materials,due to the low birefringence of the wave-guides.We propose what we believe is a novel compact vertical-dual-slot waveguide-based coupling scheme for silicon carbide,enabling efficient low-birefringence polarization splitting by extensively modulating the trans-verse-magnetic mode distribution.We numerically and experimentally demonstrate the device in the 4H-silicon-carbide-on-insulator integrated platform,with a small footprint of 2.2 μm×15 μm.The device,easy to fabricate via a single lithography process as other components on the chip,exhibits low insertion loss of＜0.71 dB and＜0.51 dB for the transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic polarized light,respectively,and polarization extinction ratio of＞13 dB,over 80 nm wavelength range.
Periodic dielectric waveguide beam splitter based on co-directional coupling

Abstract:A compact beam splitter consisting of three branches of periodic dielectric waveguides (PDW) is designed and analyzed theoretically. Both the symmetrical and asymmetrical configurations of the beam splitter are studied. The band structure for the guided modes is calculated by using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method with Bloch-type boundary conditions applying in an appropriate supercell. The field patterns for the whole structure and the transmissions for the output ports are calculated using the multiple scattering method. By utilizing the co-directional coupling mechanism, the light injected into the input branch can be efficiently transferred into the two output branches if the phase matching conditions are satisfied. The coupling length is short and the broad-band requirement can be achieved. Bending loss is small and high transmission (above 95%) can be preserved for arbitrarily bent PDW if the bend radius of each bend exceeds five wavelengths. This feature indicates that the periodic dielectric waveguide beam splitter (PDWBS) is a high efficiency device for power redistribution while avoiding the lattice orientation restriction of the photonic crystal waveguides (PCW).
