Abstract:Considering the requirement of monochromaticity and tunability for resonator used in on-chip optical interconnect source,we design and make a tunable silicon reflection cavity mirror based on microring resonator,using complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology and silicon material on insulating substrate.The performance of the reflection cavity is analyzed by the transfer-matrix method,and we find that the reflection cavity shows good properties in sharpness and extinction ratio.The experimental results show that the reflectivity of the reflection cavity can reach 90％ at the wavelength of 1549 nm,the quality factor is 3 × 104,and the free spectral range (FSR) is 9.6 nm.By applying the thermo-optic modulation to the microring resonator,the wavelength tunability in FSR can be realized within the power range of 0-40.5 mW.

Abstract:A tunable temporal photonic fractional differentiator using a silicon-on-isolator (SOI) electrically tuned microring resonator (MRR) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Through changing the voltage applied on the MRR, the fractional order of the photonic differentiator can be continuously tuned. The proposed fractional-order differentiator is demonstrated experimentally with Gaussian pulse injection and rectangular pulse injection, respectively. The small deviation shows the feasibility of our photonic differentiator with an integrated silicon MRR.

Abstract:Photonic integrated circuits for photonic computing open up the possibility for the realization of ultrahigh-speed and ultra wide-band signal processing with compact size and low power consumption. Differential equations model and govern fundamental physical phenomena and engineering systems in virtually any field of science and engineering, such as temperature diffusion processes, physical problems of motion subject to acceleration inputs and frictional forces and the response of different resistor-capacitor circuits, etc. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate a feasible integrated scheme to solve first-order linear ordinary differential equation with constant-coefficient tunable based on a single silicon microring resonator. Besides, we analyze the impact of the chirp and pulse-width of input signals on the computing deviation. This device can be compatible with the electronic technology (typically complementary metal-oxide semiconductor technology), which may motivate the development of integrated photonic circuits for optical computing.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a tunable fractional-order photonic differentiator (DIFF) that can process input pulses with a sub-gigahertz bandwidth. Our scheme utilizes the self-induced optical modulation effect observed in a silicon-on-insulator micro-ring resonator. Gaussian-like pulses with varying pulse widths between 7.5 and 20 ns are employed for differentiation, achieving an energy efficiency over 45%, to the best of our knowledge, which surpasses all previously reported schemes for input pulses with a sub-gigahertz bandwidth. We simulate the temporal dynamics of pulses to gain insight into the physical mechanisms underlying the differentiated outputs and provide a method for differentiation order adjustment, which is experimentally realized using an all-optical pump-probe technique.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a temporal differentiator in optical field based on a silicon microring resonator with a radius of 40 microm. The microring resonator operates near the critical coupling region, and can take the first order derivative of the optical field. It features compact size thus is suitable for integration with silicon-on-insulator (SOI) based optical and electronic devices. The performance of this optical differentiator is tested using signals with typical shapes such as Gaussian, sinusoidal and square-like pulses at data rates of 10 Gb/s and 5 Gb/s.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an all-optical temporal differential-equation solver that can be used to solve ordinary differential equations (ODEs) characterizing general linear time-invariant (LTI) systems. The photonic device implemented by an add-drop microring resonator (MRR) with two tunable interferometric couplers is monolithically integrated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer with a compact footprint of ~60 μm × 120 μm. By thermally tuning the phase shifts along the bus arms of the two interferometric couplers, the proposed device is capable of solving first-order ODEs with two variable coefficients. The operation principle is theoretically analyzed, and system testing of solving ODE with tunable coefficients is carried out for 10-Gb/s optical Gaussian-like pulses. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the fabricated device as a tunable photonic ODE solver.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a tunable broadband photonic radio frequency (RF) phase shifter based on a silicon microring resonator. This scheme utilizes the thermal nonlinear effect of the silicon microring to change the electrical phase of the RF signal with a wide tuning range. A prototype of the phase shifter is experimentally demonstrated for a 40-GHz signal with a 0-4.6-rad tuning range.

Abstract:Thermally tunable Fano and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonances are theoretically and experimentally demonstrated based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer assisted Bragg grating-microring coupled resonant system on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. In this paper, the destructive and constructive coupling between the two resonators, the microring resonator and the Fabry-Perot resonator formed by two Bragg gratings, give rise to the Fano and EIT resonances, respectively. The resonance lineshape can be controlled and converted by tuning the optical path length of the MZI arm. The device performance has been theoretically analyzed by using a specially developed numerical model. The coupled resonant system was designed, fabricated, and characterized on a commercial (SOI) platform. The tuning and conversion of the resonance lineshape by thermo-optical effect have been experimentally observed and verified, with good agreement between the experimental data and the simulations.

Abstract:Microring-based photonic fractional differentiators play an important role in the on-chip all-optical signal processing. Unfortunately, the previous works do not consider the time-reversal and the time delay characteristics of the microring-based fractional differentiator. They also do not include the effect of input pulse width on the output. In particular, it cannot explain why the microring-based differentiator with the differentiation order n > 1 has larger output deviation than that with n < 1, and why the microring-based differentiator cannot reproduce the three-peak output waveform of an ideal differentiator with n > 1. In this paper, a comprehensive theoretical model is proposed. The critically-coupled microring resonator is modeled as an ideal first-order differentiator, while the under-coupled and over-coupled resonators are modeled as the time-reversed ideal fractional differentiators. Traditionally, the over-coupled microring resonators are used to form the differentiators with 1 < n < 2. However, we demonstrate that smaller fitting error can be obtained if the over-coupled microring resonator is fitted by an ideal differentiator with n < 1. The time delay of the differentiator is also considered. Finally, the influences of some key factors on the output waveform and deviation are discussed. The proposed theoretical model is beneficial for the design and application of the microring-based fractional differentiators.

Abstract:In this paper, a resonant system is demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator wafer to achieve tunable Fano resonances. In this system, the Fano resonance originates from the interference of two beams resonant in the microring resonator. The shapes of the Fano resonances are tunable through controlling the phase difference of the two beams. Both large slope and high extinction ratio (ER) are obtained when the phase difference is 0.5π or 1.5π. Experimental results show that Fano resonances with steep slope and ER over 20 dB are achieved in the whole free spectral range by controlling the microheaters to meet the phase condition.

Abstract:A high-speed photonic temporal differentiator based on cascaded SOI microring resonators is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in this study. The first-order all-optical differentiation functionality is realized through approaching the critical coupling condition of the cascaded microring resonators. A three-stage double channel side-coupled cascaded microring structure is used to provide wider bandwidth and larger notch depth in its transmission spectrum. The fabricated cascaded SOI microring device is experimentally verified by Gaussian-like pulse trains with a data rate of up to 80 Gbit s(-1). Due to the use of cascaded microring resonators, the notch depth in the transmission spectrum is increased from less than 30 dB to larger than 30 dB, thus the quality of the differentiated signal is improved.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrated a thermally tunable ring reflector, which is made up of a Y-branch splitter and ring resonator on SOI platform using a CMOS-photonics technology. The results show good reflectivity which can up to be 90 % near the 1550 nm. The reflective response is successfully tuned by one free spectral range through thermo-optic effect with a tuning efficiency of 5.3 mW/nm. We also discuss its applications in silicon hybrid lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrated a novel approach for the interrogation of wavelength-modulated optical sensors. The interrogator is based on a tunable on-chip microring filter. By tuning the center wavelength of the microring filter, the center wavelength of the sensor can be readout by the corresponding tuning power. This approach has the potential of constructing a compact and cost-effective interrogator with good performance.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate continuously tunable optical time delay and advance using coupling-modulated microring resonators (CMR) with a 15-mu m radius. By modulating the coupling coefficient through thermo-optical effect based on micro-heater, the coupling state of the microring is flexibly controlled; as a result, a large dynamic time tuning range (from time advance to delay) is achieved. The CMR device based on SOI is fabricated with commercial 0.18-mu m CMOS technology. A novel micro-heater structure was firstly used to thermally tune the coupling state of the micoring. Pulse delay and advance from -15 ps to 85 ps is experimentally realized.

Abstract:We propose a novel resonator containing an elliptical microring based on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Simulations using the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method show that the novel elliptical microring can efficiently enhance the mode coupling between straight bus waveguides and resonator waveguides or between adjacent resonators while preserving relatively high intrinsic quality factors with large free spectral range. The proposed resonator would be an alternative choice for future high-density integrated photonic circuits.

Abstract:The invention discloses an optical differentiator based on a silicon-based annular cavity resonator, which belongs to the field of optical fiber communication technology. The optical differentiator comprises a to-be-differentiated signal generator, a silicon-based annular cavity resonator, and a differentiated signal detecting and monitoring system. The silicon-based annular cavity resonator consists of a silicon-based annulet and a straight waveguide and the air-gap between the annulet and the straight waveguide is from dozens to hundreds of nanometers; the spectra of the silicon-based annular cavity resonator is characterized by periodical band-stop filtering and the transmissivity at the resonant wavelength is equal to 0 or quite close to 0. The principle of the optical differentiator is that when the silicon-based annular cavity resonator meets or is close to a critical coupling state, the spectra characteristic of the silicon-based annular cavity resonator is quite similar to the differentiator within certain range with the resonant wavelength as the center. The optical differentiator manufactured by the device has simple structure, small volume and convenient integration and can be used in an integrated all-optical signal processing system.

Abstract:An interrogation system for wavelength-modulated optical sensors based on tunable microring filter has been proposed and demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally. The wavelength shift of the sensors can be readout from the shift of the peak optical output of the system by scanning the resonant wavelength of the microring filter. We fabricate the interrogator on the silicon-on-insulator platform and a fiber Bragg grating sensor (FBG) is precisely interrogated. The Lorentz spectrum of the microring filter can de-flatten the output spectrum of the FBG and improve the interrogating resolution efficiently. Such a technique potentially provides a compact (only 50×50μm2), low-cost, and high-performance (1pm resolution) approach for the interrogation of the wavelength-modulated sensor and distributed sensor arrays.
