Abstract:We propose a highly-sensitive temperature sensor employing a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The waveguide widths in the two MZI arms are tailored to have different temperature sensitivities but nearly the same group refractive indices. A temperature sensor with an enhanced sensitivity of larger than 438pm/degrees C is experimentally demonstrated, which is over seven times larger than that of conventional silicon optical temperature sensor (about 60pm/degrees C for quasi-TM mode). Moreover, the sensor is easy to fabricate, only by a single mask, and no need of any polymer cladding, which makes it more robust, and can be used in lab-on-chip systems as a temperature monitor. Abstract:In this article, an in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer (ILMZI)-based temperature sensor of a sandwich-like composite structure was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Using simple cleaving and splicing operations, ILMZI was formed by compactly sandwiching a section of four-hole microstructure optical fiber (FHMF) of ultrashort length between two segments of multimode fibers and single-mode fibers in turn. Due to the large thermo-optic coefficient difference between the silica and air modes in FHMF, the sensor achieves a comparable sensitivity of 67.29 pm/degrees C over a wide dynamic range of 20.8 degrees C-100.4 degrees C. Because the sensing area length is only a few hundred micrometers, the long-term stability and anti-interference of the sensor are greatly enhanced. In addition, the large airhole design confines the propagation mode in silica medium by total internal reflection, reducing the interaction between the liquid sample and the sensing element, making the sensor inert to the ambient refractive index. The maximum response deviation of the sensor under microvibration disturbances is 3.51 x 10(-4) nm/degrees C, and the maximum cross-sensitivity under strain disturbances is only 0.0018 degrees C/mu epsilon. The proposed sensor is excellent in performance, easy in fabrication, simple in structure, and low in cost, which can be expected to be used in practical temperature sensing applications without any additional packaging.

Abstract:Traditional temperature detection has limitations in terms of sensing accuracy and response time, while chip-level photoelectric sensors based on the thermo-optic effect can improve measurement sensitivity and reduce costs. This paper presents on-chip temperature sensors based on polysilicon (p-Si) waveguides. Dual-microring resonator (MRR) and asymmetric Mach–Zehnder interferometer (AMZI) sensors are demonstrated. The experimental results show that the sensitivities of the sensors based on AMZI and MRR are 86.6 pm/K and 85.7 pm/K, respectively. The temperature sensors proposed in this paper are compatible with the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication technique. Benefitting from high sensitivity and a compact footprint, these sensors show great potential in the field of photonic-electronic applications.

Abstract:A reflective fiber temperature sensor system based on the ZnO thin film is proposed. The transmittance spectra and temperature dependent optical property of the sensing head with ZnO thin film is investigated theoretically and experimentally, and the temperature resolution of similar to 1 degrees C is obtained in the temperature region of 300-773 K. The temperature sensing system is only related to the wavelength shift of transmittance spectra, and has a high stability without depending on the incident light intensity. This research results also indicate a fiber optical sensor with a broad temperature measurement range (10-1800 K) can be gained as a promising temperature sensing device, and can be applied into some extremely environments, such as aircraft, nuclear power station and power transmission system, and so on. Abstract:We demonstrate a temperature-insensitive waveguide sensor based on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The sensor consists of a ring resonator and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MM). A free spectral range of the sensing ring is designed to be slightly different from that of the MZI; hence, the Vernier effect can be employed to improve sensitivity. By optimizing structural parameters of the MZI, the envelope peak position of a cascaded transmission spectrum can be immune to the temperature variation, and only dependent on analyte change in the sensing area. The experimental results show that bulk refractive index (RI) sensitivity of the proposed sensor is 3552 nm/RI unit, while its temperature sensitivity is less than 4 pm/K, which is two orders of magnitude smaller than the conventional cascaded sensor structure without temperature compensation. The proposed temperature-insensitive waveguide sensor does not need polymer cladding or extra thermal stabilization, making it more robust in practical applications. Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a high-resolution and fast-response optical waveguide temperature sensor based on asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structure. The sensing region is composed of an asymmetric MZI structure, which consists of two different kinds of cores formed with commercial polymer materials EpoClad and Norland optical adhesive 73 (NOA 73), respectively, in the two arms. Due to the higher thermo-optic coefficient of NOA 73, the phase changes of the two MZI arms are different with the temperature which in turn induces output optical power variations, enabling simple and real-time temperature detection. The sensor exhibits a large sensitivity of -1.685 degrees C-1, high resolution of 1.48 x 10(-3) degrees C and fast response time of about 510 mu s. The advantages of high sensitivity and resolution, low-cost, competent integration and compatible with most biological assays make the designed sensor potential application in temperature detections of molecular analysis, biotechnology and chemical synthesis. Abstract:A Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on single-mode-multimode-thin-core-single-mode fiber structure is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for measuring refractive index and temperature simultaneously. The transmission dips of the sensor will shift when the ambient refractive index and temperature change, so it is possible to measure the refractive index and temperature by monitoring the wavelength shifts of the two transmission dips due to different interference orders. The experimental results show that the sensing sensitivities of refractive index and temperature are -18.1764 nm/RIU and 0.0733 nm/RIU within the refractive index range from 1.3105 to 1.3517 and the temperature range from 25 degrees C to 50 degrees C, respectively. Its cost effectiveness, robustness and easy fabrication will have attractive potential applications in chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract:In this paper, a ratiometric wavelength monitor at around 1550 nm based on the passive Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) integrated device is proposed, theoretically investigated and fabricated. This monitor is made of a single Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) with direction coupler acting as edge filter. The ouput spectral response is designed to be 'X-type'. The device shows a resolution of better than 0.4 nm over the wavelength range from 1505 nm to 1585 nm with a discrimination range of 30.5 dB from 15.5 dB to -15dB, which is suitable for wavelength measurement. Based on the single mode principle, the waveguide has a 220 nmx500 nm cross section for TM-polarized mode, and the total chip size is only 18 umx20 um. In conclusion, this proposed ratiometric wavelength monitor based on a single Mach-Zehnder Interferometer on SOI platform can realize the excellent resolution over large wavelength range.

Abstract:A simply fabricated, highly sensitive, and inexpensive optical fiber temperature sensor is reported with a Fabry–Perot (FP) microcavity of controlled length. The microcavity with controllable length is fabricated by single-mode fiber (SMF) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for temperature sensing. After the PDMS is cured, the SMF is connected to the supercontinuum light source (SCLS) and the optical spectrometer analyzer (OSA) for online observation of the reflection spectrum. The micro-displacement platform is used to pull the SMF to form an air cavity. After the air cavity is stabilized, ultraviolet (UV) activated glue is used for packaging outside the PDMS. The FP microcavity is formed by the end face of the SMF and the face of PDMS. The length of the FP microcavity can be controlled online by the micro-displacement platform to a minimum of 15 µm. The free spectral range (FSR) may reach 74.8 nm and the interference fringe contrast (IFC) is up to 19.8 dB to allow sensitive measurements across a wide temperature range. The experiments demonstrate a high temperature sensitivity of 5.388 nm/°C from 33 to 93 °C with high repeatability and linearity (R2=0.9937). Stability experiments showed that the maximum changes in wavelength and intensity are only 45 pm and 0.035 dB, respectively. It is anticipated that the easily constructed, compact, and inexpensive fiber-optic temperature sensor will be employed in practical applications.

Abstract:ABSTRACTA temperature sensor based on a Brillouin optoelectronic oscillator (BOEO) is presented and demonstrated. In the BOEO loop, a phase modulated light is converted to a microwave signal duo to the asymmetric gain of the Stokes light and the anti‐Stokes light in the stimulated Brillouin scattering to sustain the oscillation. A section of single mode fiber is used as the Brillouin gain medium as well as the sensing element. In this structure, the oscillation frequency of the BOEO varies linearly with the temperature under test. The experimental results show that the temperature sensor features high sensitivity and high stability, thanks to the intrinsic narrow gain spectrum of the stimulated Brillouin scattering. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:A new type of silicon-based Mach–Zehnder interference (MZI) temperature sensor chip with "mosquito coil" structure was designed. The sensor chip used a new MZI interference structure. After the light entered the chip, it split and interfered in the combiner of the chip. The change in the surrounding temperature will cause the refractive index of the waveguide to change, which will cause the output light intensity to change. The sensor used a frequency stabilized laser that was based on a Bragg grating fiber. The experimental results showed that this structure could achieve a resolution of 0.002 °C and measuring range of 30 °C.

Abstract:Based on the spectral absorption effect of ZnO thin film, a wide measurement-range fiber optical temperature sensor with a sensitivity of 0.06 m/°C is proposed. By optimally designing the sensing head structure and using the light sources with different bandwidths (8 nm, 30 nm and 47 nm), the temperature-dependent transmission spectra from the sensor are measured and investigated experimentally. The results show that the spectral transmittance curves become smoother with the increased bandwidth of the incident light, and the red shift of the absorption edge is almost the same when the temperature is increased by 50 K. Using the annealed ZnO thin film and the optimized light source (47 nm), the temperature resolution of the designed sensor reaches approximately 1 °C in a wide temperature range 373–873 K. Besides a wide measurement range, the temperature sensor has some other advantages such as a simple optical structure, a low cost and a good stability.

Abstract:We present the design, fabrication and characterization of an on-chip, ultra-high sensitivity temperature sensor using asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. Both the group index and the sensitivity differences between two arms are considered for simultaneous sensitivity and linear range enhancement. The fabrication of the sensor only needs single lithography without introducing any high thermo-optic coefficient (TOC) materials. The experimental results demonstrate a sensitivity of 445 pm/°C from 27 °C to 67 °C, which is five times larger than a conventional all-silicon photonic temperature sensor (~80 pm/°C).

Abstract:An optical sensor based on dual asymmetric Mach–Zehnder interferometers (AMZIs) cascade with temperature-independent is proposed. The optical sensor based on AMZI is very sensitive to the change of ambient temperature. The temperature shift will lead to the change of the refractive index of the optical waveguide, which will affect the accuracy of the measurement of target-parameters. The designed optical sensor is composed of two AMZIs cascaded, one acting as a sensing AMZI and the other as a compensating AMZI. When the temperature changes, the sensing curve of the sensing AMZI shifts. The compensating AMZI can make the sensing curve goes into reverse to realize the compensation. The error of compensation results is reduced by 2–3 orders of magnitude, the compensation temperature range is from 5 to 45 °C, and the error is reduced to < 0.1%. This cascade compensation structure can be used not only for based on AMZI optical sensor, but for other interference optical devices.

Abstract:An antiinterference temperature sensor based on the Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is proposed, which is formed by successively fusing a homemade Kagome hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) with two no-core fibers (NCFs) and two single-mode fibers (SMFs). Because of the antiresonant reflection optical waveguide properties, the interference between hollow-core mode and glass mode is achieved in Kagome HC-PCF, which significantly simplifies the overall sensing architecture and maintains better stability of the sensing signal. Using a Kagome HC-PCF length of , the maximum temperature sensitivity of the proposed sensor is obtained as 38.39 pm/°C. Meanwhile, it exhibits a low sensitivity of 0.5041 pm/ to ambient stress variation, −0.28 nm/ to curvature change, and 9.35 nm/RIU to external refractive index (RI) change. This MZI temperature sensor has the advantages of compact structure, easy fabrication, low cost, small size, high sensitivity, and antiinterference capability, which can be expected to be applied to temperature sensing in complex environments.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel temperature sensor based on the Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) has been proposed and experimentally investigated. The sensor consists of a symmetrical double-grooved structure fabricated by a high-frequency pulsed CO2 laser. Some key factors affecting the transmission spectrum, such as the writing depth and interference length, have been analyzed in detail. In addition, the temperature sensitivity of the sensor is obtained in theory, by analyzing the influences of the effective refractive index and the interference length on it. The experimental results demonstrate that the wavelength shifts linearly toward longer wavelength, which agrees with the theoretical analysis. The temperature sensitivity of 230 pm/°C with a linear correlation coefficient of 0.99 can be achieved in the temperature ranging from 20 °C to 90 °C. The repeatability of the sensor also is studied. Compared with traditional MZI sensors, the proposed sensor has a high temperature sensitivity. And it is suitable for temperature measurement applications.

Abstract:The great advances in silicon photonic sensing technology have made it an attractive platform for a wide of sensing applications. However, most silicon photonic sensing platforms suffer from high susceptibility to the temperature fluctuation of operating environment. Additional complex and costly chemical signal enhancement strategies are usually required to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Here, a biotoxoid photonic sensor that is resistant to temperature fluctuation have been demonstrated. This novel sensor consists of a ring resonator coupled to a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) readout unit. Instead of using costly wavelength interrogation, our photonic sensor directly measures the light intensity ratio between the two output ports of MZI. The temperature dependence (TD) controlling section of the MZI is used to eliminate the adverse effects of ambient temperature fluctuation. The simulation and experimental results show a linear relationship between the interrogation function and the concentration of analyte under operation conditions. The thermal drift of the proposed sensor is just 0.18%, which is a reduction of 567 folds for chemical sensing and 28 folds for immuno-biosensing compared to conventional single ring resonator. The SNR increases from 6.85 dB to 19.88 dB within a 2°C temperature variation. The high SNR optical sensor promises great potential for amplification-free of detection of nucleic acids and other biomarkers.
