Abstract:Ultrafast and ultrashort pulsed electron beams with high peak energy facilitate important applications, such as ultrafast electron characterization and high-frequency radiation source. The development of electron gun device, which simultaneously meets the requirements of ultrashort duration, high efficiency, and miniaturization, remains a challenge. Here, a carbon nanotubes cold-cathode electron gun by a photo-electric synergistic excitation is proposed, to successfully generate an ultrafast and ultrashort pulsed electron beam with repetition frequency of 1 MHz and pulse width of 278 ps. With optimizing the gun structure, a high-performance electron beam was obtained with averaged (peak) beam current over 38 mu A (137 mA), averaged (peak) current density over 0.12 A cm(-2) (435 A cm(-2)), and electron transmittance higher than 64%, co-excited by electrostatic field of 1.88 V mu m(-1) and peak laser intensity of 7.68 MW cm(-2). This electron gun shows advantages of low excitation threshold, narrow pulse width and directly generating modulated electron beam from the laser excitation.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a Terahertz (THz) oscilloscope for recording time information of an ultrashort electron beam. By injecting a laser-driven THz pulse with circular polarization into a dielectric tube, the electron beam is swept helically such that the time information is uniformly encoded into the angular distribution that allows one to characterize both the temporal profile and timing jitter of an electron beam. The dynamic range of the measurement in such a configuration is significantly increased compared to deflection with a linearly polarized THz pulse. With this THz oscilloscope, nearly 50-fold longitudinal compression of a relativistic electron beam to about 15 fs (rms) is directly visualized with its arrival time determined with 3 fs accuracy. This technique bridges the gap between streaking of photoelectrons with optical lasers and deflection of relativistic electron beams with radio-frequency deflectors, and should have wide applications in many ultrashort electron beam based facilities.

Abstract:Design considerations and initial results are presented for a new type of time-of-flight photoelectron spectrometer which is particularly suited to the study of cold metal and semiconductor cluster anions prepared in a supersonic molecular beam. The desired cluster is extracted from the molecular beam, mass-selected after an initial time-of-flight, and decelerated as it enters the photoelectron spectrometer. Photoelectrons ejected from the cluster by an ArF excimer laser are collected with >98% efficiency in an intense pulsed magnetic field of carefully controlled divergence. This divergent field parallelizes the photoelectron trajectories and maps smoothly onto a low, uniform magnetic field which guides the electrons along a 234-cm flight tube leading to a microchannel-plate detector. The strong magnetic fields and simple, open design provide excellent rejection of stray photoelectrons in a clean, ultrahigh-vacuum environment. The UPS spectrum of Si20− is given as an example.

Abstract:We numerically study the relativistic ponderomotive scattering of an ultrafast electron beam with a focused high-intensity laser pulse using a three-dimensional test-particle code. The temporal evolution of the spatial distribution and the energy spectrum of the scattered electron beam are investigated. The method using the ponderomotive scattering effect to measure the pulse duration of an ultrashort electron beam is discussed in detail. Taking into account the group velocity mismatch, the interaction geometry, and electron energy spectrum modified by the ponderomotive forces, the pulse duration of ultrashort electron beams can be retrieved by the ponderomotive scattering cross-correlation method.

Abstract:In order to develop millimeter wave electric vacuum radiation source devices with field emission cold cathodes, the electron-optical system using a large area carbon nanotube cold cathode (CNCC) was investigated, which can generate an electron beam with large current and high current density. By adding a mesh grid on the cathode surface of a Pierce electron gun, problems of the electron bunching and high electric field applied to the CNCC surface have been solved. Based on the experimental results of a CNCC, the field emission model was built, by using PIC simulation software, to simulate the Pierce electron-optical system. The effect of the mesh grid on the electron beam has been analyzed. And the influence of the anode voltage and the axial magnetic field for the electron beam radius has been researched. The simulation results of the electron-optical system showed that when the area of cathode is 3.03 cm(2), an electron beam with 210 mA at 60 kV can be produced. The current density is 6.7 A/cm(2) and the maximum radius of the electron beam is 1 mm.

Abstract:Cold cathode is a compelling candidate for compact and high-frequency vacuum electronic devices (VEDs) due to its superior electron emission characteristics, and sheet electron beam is more suitable for planar high-frequency VEDs. To combine cold cathode with sheet electron beam to manufacture a high-performance electron gun is a promising strategy. This article presents the design and fabrication of a sheet beam electron gun based on carbon nanotube (CNT) cold cathode and carries out the experiments to validate its performance. The designed electron gun with a sheet-shaped CNT cathode and an asymmetric focusing electrode can effectively generate and transmit a sheet electron beam. A sheet-shaped CNT cathode was fabricated using thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) for CNT growth and laser etching technique for sheet CNT pattern. An asymmetric focusing electrode utilized in the electron gun can effectively eliminate edge emission effect and achieve uniform sheet electron beam focusing. In the experiments, the sheet electron beam with dimensions of 2.86 $\times$ 0.41 mm is uniform and maintains the desired shape generated by the CNT cold cathode. The electron gun can operate in the pulse mode at a maximum beam current of 1.92 mA, corresponding to a beam current density of 0.23 A/cm $^{\text{2}}$ . This work establishes a solid foundation for further research on sheet beam generation by using CNT cold cathodes and expands their applicability in microwave VEDs.

Abstract:A miniaturised reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer combined with an electron ionisation ion source has been developed for the analysis of gases. An entirely new helium ion removal pulsing technique in this mass spectrometer is used to achieve an improved performance for the first time. The helium carrier gas, which enters into the source along with the gaseous sample, is simultaneously ionised and then orthogonally introduced into the time-of-fight mass analyser. Once the relatively light helium ions in the ion packet become extremely close to the reflectron plate (B-plate for short in this article), a modulated pulse is instantaneously applied on the B-plate and a negative reflectron voltage is set to the B-plate and lasts for a very short period, during which all the helium ions are directly bumped into the B-plate and subsequently removed. The helium ion removal pulsing technique can efficiently avoid saturation of the micro-channel plate caused by too many helium ions. A compact and durable instrument is designed, which has a mass resolving resolution greater than 400 FWHM for online gas analysis. The technology may also be further developed to remove other ions for TOF mass spectrometry.

Abstract:Streaking of photoelectrons with optical lasers has been widely used for temporal characterization of attosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses. Recently, this technique has been adapted to characterize femtosecond x-ray pulses in free-electron lasers with the streaking imprinted by farinfrared and Terahertz (THz) pulses. Here, we report successful implementation of THz streaking for time-stamping of an ultrashort relativistic electron beam of which the energy is several orders of magnitude higher than photoelectrons. Such ability is especially important for MeV ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) applications where electron beams with a few femtosecond pulse width may be obtained with longitudinal compression while the arrival time may fluctuate at a much larger time scale. Using this laser-driven THz streaking technique, the arrival time of an ultrashort electron beam with 6 fs (rms) pulse width has been determined with 1.5 fs (rms) accuracy. Furthermore, we have proposed and demonstrated a non-invasive method for correction of the timing jitter with femtosecond accuracy through measurement of the compressed beam energy, which may allow one to advance UED towards sub-10 fs frontier far beyond the ~100 fs (rms) jitter.

Abstract:Herein, we propose a technique for megaelectronvolt ultrafast electron diffraction that can achieve a few-femtosecond time resolution. The technique modulates a relativistic electron beam using two radially polarized laser pulses of varying frequencies, which enable the condensation of the electrons into an ultrashort pulse. Moreover, our study shows that this technique can suppress the arrival-time jitter of the electron beam at the sample location. Numerical simulations show that using realistic laser parameters corresponding to the current gigawatt-power-level laser systems, a 3.3-fs (rms over 45% charge) electron beam can be obtained and the arrival-time jitter can be 1.35 fs (rms). This technique may have a considerable impact on ultrafast electron diffraction, microscopy, and other ultrafast research facilities that require few-femtosecond electron beams with a small time jitter.

Abstract:A concurrently high beam current and high current density carbon nanotube (CNT) cold cathode electron gun is herein developed. A radial electron source has been realized, formed from CNTs synthesized directly on the side walls of a stainless steel truncated-cone electron gun. Experimental results evidenced a 35 kV/50 mA electron beam can achieve a beam transparency of nearly 100% through the use of double anodes and crossed electric and magnetic fields. A maximum beam current density of 3.5 A/cm(2) was achieved. These results demonstrate the potential impact of coupling novel cold cathode gun architectures and emerging nanomaterials and their collective role in augmenting the performance of incumbent electron gun technologies, alongside allowing for the realization new types of field emission vacuum electron radiation sources. High Energy Electron Radiography Experiment Research Based on Picosencond Pulse Width Bunch

Abstract:A new scheme is proposed that high energy electron beam as a probe is used for time resolved imaging measurement of high energy density materials, especially for high energy density matter and inertial confinement fusion. The first picosecond pulse-width electron radiography experiment was achieved by Institute of Modern Physics (IMP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Tsinghua University (THU), based on THU Linear electron accelerator (LINAC). It is used for principle test and certifying that this kind of LINAC with ultra-short pulse electron bunch can be used for electron radiography. The experiment results, such as magnifying factor and the imaging distortion, are consistent with the beam optical theory well. The 2.5 um RMS spatial resolution has been gotten with magnifying factor 46, without optimization the imaging lens section. It is found that in the certain range of magnifying factor, the RMS spatial resolution will get better with bigger magnifying factor. The details of experiment set up, results, analysis and discussions are presented here.

Abstract:In modern high-gain free-electron lasers, ultra-fast photon pulses designed for studying chemical, atomic and biological systems are generated from a serial of behaviors of high-brightness electron beam at the time-scale ranging from several hundred femtoseconds to sub-femtosecond. Currently, radiofrequency transverse deflectors are widely used to provide reliable, single-shot electron beam phase space diagnostics, with a temporal resolution of femtosecond. Here, we show that the time resolution limitations caused by the intrinsic beam size in transverse deflectors, can be compensated with specific transverse-to-longitudinal coupling elements. For the purpose, an undulator with transverse gradient field is introduced before the transverse deflector. With this technique, a resolution of less than 1fs root mean square has been theoretically demonstrated for measuring the longitudinal profile and/or the micro-bunching of the electron bunch.

R&D OF AN ULTRAFAST PROBE APPARATUS BASED ON MeV ELECTRON DIFFRACTION AT TSINGHUA UNIVERSITY*

Abstract:An ultrafast probe apparatus based on MeV ultrafast electron diffraction is developed at Tsinghua University. It aims at generating 1.5 to 3 MeV pulse with sub-pC charge and sub-ps pulse length for pump-probe experiments. It consists of an S-band 1.6-cell radiofrequency photocathode gun, a solenoid, a sample chamber, a deflecting cavity, a detection system and otherdiagnostics tools.Simulations show the position of solenoid coil affects the spot size on detection screen and the charge of collimated bunch significantly.The collimator is found to be helpful to stabilize the charge of collimated bunch and reduce its normalized emittance.The construction of the apparatus is almost finished and the commissioning test will start soon.

Abstract:Electrospray thrusters exhibit diverse operational modes based on the nature of ejected particles. Time-of-flight mass spectrometry is frequently employed to analyze the composition of the plume. This study introduces a novel converter-based bipolar high-voltage pulse generator aimed at producing synchronized bipolar high-voltage pulses with controllable voltage levels and frequencies, specifically tailored for the study of electrospray thrusters. The proposed topology generates bipolar high-voltage rails from a low-voltage power source through the forward-flyback with Cockcroft-Walton voltage multiplier topology. Subsequently, fast high-voltage MOSFETs are employed to generate high-voltage pulses. This paper outlines the operational principles and design methodologies of the pulse generator. Experimental verification corroborates its operational principles and functionalities, revealing that the pulse rise and fall times consistently remain below 30 ns, while the voltage can be tuned within the range of 300-1000 V. An electrospray thruster was employed to conduct a thorough and practical validation of the high-voltage pulse generator. This included generating time-of-flight curves and mass spectra of the plume, resulting in precise differentiation of all particles present.
Microsecond Pulsed Glow Discharge Time‐of‐flight Mass Spectrometer

Abstract:A linear time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOFMS) has been designed, constructed, and coupled with a glow discharge source in microsecond pulsed mode (MSPGD). Orthogonal acceleration, a DC quadrupole and deflecting pulse techniques are used to diminish kinetic distribution and the spatial distribution of ions, and for deflecting Ar+ ions in their flight path. Comparison was made in the same discharge source between MSPGD and DC discharge. The continuous ion current is only 0.2 nA in the DC discharge mode, while the peak ion current reaches over 100 nA in the MSPGD mode. In addition, the ratio of the repelled ions to total ions is much higher in MSPGD than with a DC discharge in TOFMS. The mechanism of MSPGD is discussed. A resolving power of 500 was achieved, which is excellent for elemental analysis. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first time that a MSPGD-TOFMS combination has been described. The system is now being further optimized to improve its performance.

Abstract:A beam source is proposed for the production of an intense cold cesium atomic beam that can be used in cesium beam atomic clocks. The source is based on a two-dimensional magneto-optical trap (2D-MOT), but introduces hollow cooling and pushing lights in the axial direction to create a 2D+-MOT, which separates the cooling and pushing functions while the low-power pushing light pushes atoms out to form a cold atomic beam. This cold cesium atomic beam source reduces the light shift due to leakage light and retains longitudinal cooling to increase the flux of the cold atomic beam compared with that of the conventional 2D+-MOT scheme. The specifics of the design are investigated, the atomic velocity and beam flux are calculated, and the results are experimentally verified. The results demonstrate that when the power of the pushing light is 180 µW and when its frequency resonates with the 4 → 5′ transition of the Cs D2 line, the most probable longitudinal velocity of the outgoing cold atomic beam, the width of velocity distribution, and the atomic beam flux are 19.38 m/s, 8.1 m/s, and 1.7 × 1010 atoms/s, respectively.

Abstract:An electrospray ionization source has been coupled to a reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer. By orienting the ion source perpendicular to the field-free drift region, the longitudinal energy spread of the ion packet has been substantially reduced, allowing a mass resolving power of over 1000 to be achieved for both low-mass and high-mass ions of biological interest. In addition, instrument sensitivity allows the routine detection of low-picomole and subpicomole quantities of large multiply charged species such as cytochrome c (MW = 12,360.9). The potential utility of this instrument for conducting rapid screening of chromatographic effluents is discussed in light of its simplicity, rapid scanning speed, and high sensitivity.
