Abstract:We present theoretical and experimental results that demonstrate an increase in the grating bandwidth by placing a graphene on the chip. A focusing subwavelength grating with coupling efficiency of −4.3 dB and 1 dB bandwidth of ∼60 nm was demonstrated. After a graphene sheet was transferred onto the chip, the maximum 1 dB bandwidth was increased to ∼72 nm. Experimental results are consistent with the calculated graphene induced waveguide refractive index and dispersion changes, and the bandwidth improvement may be attributed to the reduction of grating dispersion. This study may be of interest for graphene-on-silicon photonic integrated circuit applications.

Abstract:In this work, we have investigated experimentally and theoretically the dispersion relation of a plasmonic slab waveguide, where the thin gold film with nano-aperature arrays is sandwiched by graphene and a silica layer on a silicon chip. It is shown that the plasmonic slab waveguides are compatible with silicon technology. We have found that when the light waves irradiate the nanostructured waveguides with or without graphene, surface plasmon polaritons are always excited at the metal-dielectric interface due to the interaction between the surface charge oscillation and the electromagnetic field of the light. But in the slab waveguide with graphene, the resonant dips definitely shift in the reflection spectra, which indicates that the contact of graphene can tune the dispersion relation of the waveguide in the visible regime. Experimental measurements on optical reflections are in good agreement with calculated plasmonic band structures. Further calculations show that the dispersion relation of plasmonic slab waveguides can be tuned by electron doping and the nonlinear effect of graphene. The investigations provide a way to actively control the dispersion relation of plasmonic waveguides on silicon chips and benefit the development graphene-related active optical devices.

Abstract:Enlarged group index has been reported previously when surface plasmons propagate through the graphene sheet, yet a clear slow wave performance in graphene has not been explored. We proposed and numerically analyzed here for the first time to the best of our knowledge an extremely wideband slow surface wave in a graphene-based grating waveguide. The strongly delayed wave (120Δf>0.7 THz) can be dynamically controlled via the gate-voltage dependent optical properties of graphene. Our results suggest that graphene may be a very promising slow light medium, promoting future slow light devices based on graphene.

Abstract:The two-dimensional material, represented by graphene, is an immediate research focus of interdisciplinary fields, such as nanophotonics and life sciences. The unique advantages of surface plasmon polaritons, such as enhanced transmission and sub-wavelength structure, bring opportunities for achieving all optical circuits. In this paper, based on graphene, silicon dioxide, air cavity, and so on, a novel channel surface plasma waveguide was developed. By contrasting the waveguide characteristics of graphene and gold, it is found that the mode field could be restricted in air cavity region using graphene, and the deep sub-wavelength of light field was restrained. Besides, through finite element simulation, it is investigated that propagation losses could be as low as 0.019 dB/μm, the area of normalized mode field could be as low as 0.014 λ2, and the limiting factor is 0.5. Compared with the current waveguide, the above result shows that the propagation losses is an order of magnitude lower; 20.52% of limiting factor is promoted, besides; better waveguide characteristics could be obtained with realization of sub-wavelength optical field limit. Meanwhile, the production process of waveguide structure is simple, and it is an important way to solve the high speed and miniaturization and integration of optoelectronic integrated technology in the future.

Abstract:A graphene-silicon hybrid waveguide with a dielectric spacer is proposed to enhance the nonlinear response in ultra-wide wavelength range by applying graphene's broadband highly nonlinear optical properties. The chemical potential of the graphene layer is tuned to satisfy the resonance condition and hence a low propagation loss is obtained. The dielectric spacer is used for avoiding additional free-carrier-absorption loss due to carrier interchange between the silicon core and the graphene layer. Aiming at the special waveguide structure with ultra-thin graphene layer, a full-vectorial theoretical model is developed to analyze its nonlinear properties. The waveguide dimensions are optimized in terms of the nonlinear parameter. The proposed hybrid waveguide exhibits high nonlinearity enhancement in an ultra-broad wavelength region covering near-infrared and mid-infrared bands. The conversion efficiency for a degenerate four-wave mixing process reaches -18.5 dB only with a pump power of 0.5 W and a waveguide length of tens of microns. In the wavelength range of 1.3-2.3 μm, the conversion efficiency can be kept stable by adopting suitable waveguide geometry and length. The corresponding 3-dB bandwidth can reach 40-110 nm for each fixed pump. The graphene-silicon hybrid waveguide has the potential to support chip-scale nonlinear applications in both near- and mid-infrared bands.

Abstract:At present, an important research area is the search for materials that are compatible with CMOS technology and achieve a satisfactory response rate and modulation efficiency. A strong local field of graphene surface plasmon polariton (SPP) can increase the interaction between light and graphene, reduce device size, and facilitate the integration of materials with CMOS. In this study, we design a new modulator of SPP-based cycle branch graphene waveguide. The structure comprises a primary waveguide of graphene-LiNbO3-graphene, and a secondary cycle branch waveguide is etched on the surface of LiNbO3. Part of the incident light in the primary waveguide enters the secondary waveguide, thus leading to a phase difference with the primary waveguide as reflected at the end of the branch and interaction coupling to enhance output light intensity. Through feature analysis, we discover that the area of the secondary waveguide shows significant localized fields and SPPs. Moreover, the cycle branch graphene waveguide can realize gain compensation, reduce transmission loss, and increase transmission distance. Numerical simulations show that the minimum effective mode field area is about 0.0130 lambda(2), the gain coefficient is about 700 cm(-1), and the quality factor can reach 150. The structure can realize the mode field limits of deep subwavelength and achieve a good comprehensive performance.

Abstract:Graphene has potential to replace germanium as compound semiconductor for high-performance devices because of its unique optoelectronic properties and availability of existing integrated circuit manufacturing technology. This study investigates surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waveguide-based interaction between CdS nanowires and graphene nanobelts to determine shortcomings of the existing technology. The structure uses MgF2 as cladding, which symmetrically covers CdS nanowires and graphene nanobelts. An air gap of same width is etched in middle of CdS nanowires and graphene nanobelts. SPP is optically excited. Gain compensation is obtained through coupling effect of nanowires, capacitance-enhanced effect of air gap and GaAs semiconductor material, and low refractive index of buffer layer to reduce transmission loss. The structure can achieve strong photon localization and easily implement low threshold for nanometer laser. Experiments on characteristics of SPP show that increasing air gap width of structure reduces transmission loss and increases limiting factors. Limiting factor of waveguide structure is less than 0.15, which indicates ultra-deep subwavelength constraints. SPP waveguide can be integrated with various nanophotonic and electronic devices and has broad application prospects in optical sensing, optical communication, and other fields.

Abstract:A bandwidth-tunable optical passband filter based on graphene–silicon waveguide is proposed. The device is designed by utilizing a structure with four triple series-coupled microring resonators. By changing the Fermi level of graphene to lead to the variation of the modal effective index, the transmission spectra of triple series-coupled microring resonators can be coherently combined to provide the adjustable bandwidth as desired. A detailed analysis of the designed device is presented. Numerical simulations show that the effective bandwidth tuning range from 2.70 to 6.30 nm can be obtained when each microring resonator is independently controlled. With the maximum bandwidth tunability, the designed tunable filter has a minimum extinction ratio larger than 92.35 dB.
In-Plane Optical Absorption and Free Carrier Absorption in Graphene-on-Silicon Waveguides

Abstract:We experimentally study the in-plane optical absorption and free carrier absorption (FCA) in graphene-on-silicon waveguides using a pump-probe measurement over microsecond timescales. The silicon waveguide is fabricated using complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor compatible processes, and directly covered by a graphene layer. Saturable absorption in the graphene is observed at the beginning of the pump pulse followed by an increase in absorption. The increase in absorption builds up over several microseconds, and is experimental evidence that free carriers generated by the pump absorption in graphene can transfer into silicon waveguides. The FCA in silicon waveguides eventually dominates the optical loss, which reaches ~9 dB, after several microseconds. All-optical modulations of the probe light are thus demonstrated. There is also a large thermally induced change in waveguide effective refractive index because of the optical absorption in the graphene.

Abstract:We observe a strong polarization dependent optical loss of in-plane light propagation in silicon waveguide due to the presence of graphene. Both transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) modes are efficiently (~3 dB) coupled to the graphene on suspended membrane waveguides using an apodized focusing subwavelength grating. The TE mode has 7.7 dB less excess optical loss than the TM mode at 1.5 {\mu}m for a 150 {\mu}m long waveguide in good agreement with a theoretical model. All-optical modulation of light is demonstrated. There is also a large thermally induced change in waveguide effective index because of optical absorption in graphene.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel analytical model for chiral multi-layer waveguides incorporating graphene sheets. The general structure is composed of various chiral layers, where a graphene sheet has been sandwiched between two adjacent chiral layers. We have chosen and studied this general structure to suggest a new platform for novel emerging sciences such as optical sensing. An analytical model has been proposed for the general structure to find its dispersion relation and other modal properties such as the effective index and the propagation length. To show the richness of our general structure, two novel chiral waveguides containing graphene sheets have been introduced and investigated. Our analytical results show that high values of effective indices, e.g. neff=15 at the frequency of 8 THz for the second structure, is achievable. Moreover, it has been shown that the chemical potential of the graphene and the chirality can adjust and control the plasmonic features. Our multi-layer structure and its analytical model can be utilized in several potential applications such as switches, absorbers, cloaks, polarization rotators, and directional couplers in the THz frequencies.

Abstract:We present an experimental study of the nonlinear absorption of graphene-on-silicon waveguides. The wavelength dependence of absorption saturation from a narrow linewidth optical pump is measured. Spectral hole burning (SHB) introduces a decrease in the probe absorption near the pump wavelength, which may be distinguished from the free carrier absorption (FCA) by using the time dependence of the buildup of the free carrier population. Beyond SHB bandwidth, only FCA dominates the waveguide loss. The spectral bandwidth of absorption bleaching from SHB is measured to have a full width at half-maximum of ~12 meV (~20 nm) at 16.8 dBm pump power.

Abstract:A new type of plasmonic waveguide based on a graphene-coated V-groove structure which can achieve better subwavelength confinements and longer propagation compared to the conventional metal waveguide is proposed. By dynamically altering the chemical potential of graphene, graphene surface plasmon polaritons (GSPPs) multiple modes of the hybrid graphene-coated waveguide can be reached. And the mode field energies can be well confined in the V-groove or the waveguide. The mode confinement becomes weaker and the propagation length gets longer as the chemical potential of graphene increasing. In addition, the mode propagation can be changed by adjusting the radius of the waveguide and the frequencies and the higher mode is achieved at the same time. The finite element method (FEM) has been employed to study the mode distributions and electromagnetic responses of our designs at mid-infrared frequencies. Those proposed structures may pave a way for the further development of ultra-compact, fast-tunable and long-propagation devices in the infrared region (IR).

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate high-efficiency and broadband four-wave mixing in a silicon-graphene strip waveguide. A four-wave mixing conversion efficiency of -38.7 dB and a 3-dB conversion bandwidth of 35 nm are achieved in the silicon-graphene strip waveguide with an optimized light-graphene interaction length of 60 mu m. The interaction length is controlled by a windowed area of silica layer on the silicon waveguide. Numerical simulations and experimental studies are carried out and show a nonlinear parameter gamma(Gos) as large as 10(4) W-1 . m(-1). (C) 2018 Chinese Laser Press

Abstract:Graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in the form of hexagonal lattice, has many intriguing optical and electrical properties. However, due to the atomic layer thickness, light-matter interactions in the monolayer graphene are naturally weak when the light is normally incident to the material. To overcome this challenge, waveguide-integrated graphene optoelectronic devices have been proposed and demonstrated. In such coplanar configurations, the propagating light in the waveguide can significantly interact with the graphene layer integrated on the surface of the waveguide. The combination of photonic integrated circuits and graphene also enables the development of graphene devices by using silicon photonic technology, which greatly extends the scope of graphene’s application. Moreover, the waveguide-integrated graphene devices are fully CMOS-compatible, which makes it possible to achieve low-cost and high-density integration in the future. As a result, the area has been attracting more and more attention in recent years. In this paper, we introduce basic principles and research advances of waveguide-integrated graphene optoelectronics.

Abstract:By integrating the graphene layer with the dielectric loaded surface plasmon waveguides, the tunable propagation properties have been investigated in the near-IR region, including the influences of operation frequency, the Fermi level of the graphene layer, and dielectric layer thickness. To improve the modulation properties, multiple unit cell (graphene-Al2O3) structure has been adopted. The results manifest that as the period number of the unit cell increases, the modulation depths of the propagation properties increase obviously. For instance, the modulation depth of propagation length can reach about 80% if the Fermi level changes in the range of 0.1-0.5 eV. As frequency increases, the effective index of the hybrid mode increases, while the propagation length shows a peak. The results are very helpful in understanding the tunable mechanisms of graphene plasmonic devices and designing novel waveguide structures, e.g. resonators and modulators.
Dispersion Shifts in Optical Nanowires with Thin Dielectric Coatings

Abstract:Based on exact solutions of Maxwell's equations of a 3-layer-structured cylindrical waveguide, we calculated dispersion shifts in thin-dielectric-coated optical nanowires. Typical parameters of silica and silicon nanowires are used for numerical simulations. It shows that, the dispersion of a nanowire waveguide can be made highly sensitive to the thickness and index of the coating layer, and a thin coat may lead to considerable dispersion shift of the guided light. For example, in a 300-nm-diameter silicon nanowire, a 1% decrease in diameter of the silicon core by oxidation of silicon into silica shell leads to a 34% decrease in dispersion at 1450-nm wavelength. Results presented in this work suggest the possibility of tuning waveguide dispersions of optical nanowires by coating thin dielectric layers.
