Abstract:Enlarged group index has been reported previously when surface plasmons propagate through the graphene sheet, yet a clear slow wave performance in graphene has not been explored. We proposed and numerically analyzed here for the first time to the best of our knowledge an extremely wideband slow surface wave in a graphene-based grating waveguide. The strongly delayed wave (120Δf>0.7 THz) can be dynamically controlled via the gate-voltage dependent optical properties of graphene. Our results suggest that graphene may be a very promising slow light medium, promoting future slow light devices based on graphene.

Abstract:We have systematically investigated the slow light performances based on two-dimensional material graphene, giving the conclusion that graphene exhibits much larger slow light capability than other materials. A large delay-bandwidth product has been obtained in a simple yet functional graphene-based waveguide with slow down factor c / υ <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">g</sub> at 109 and slow light bandwidth Δω at 14.5 nm, which is several orders of magnitude larger than previous results.
Graphene-doped polymer nanofibers for low-threshold nonlinear optical waveguiding

Abstract:Graphene-doped polymer nanofibers are fabricated by taper drawing of solvated polyvinyl alcohol doped with liquid-phase exfoliated graphene flakes. Nanofibers drawn this way typically have diameters measured in hundreds of nanometers and lengths in tens of millimeters; they show excellent uniformity and surface smoothness for optical waveguiding. Owing to their tightly confined waveguiding behavior, light–matter interaction in these subwavelength-diameter nanofibers is significantly enhanced. Using approximately 1350-nm-wavelength femto-second pulses, we demonstrate saturable absorption behavior in these nanofibers with a saturation threshold down to 0.25 pJ pulse −1 (peak power ∼1.3 W). Additionally, using 1064-nm-wavelength nanosecond pulses as switching light, we show all-optical modulation of a 1550-nm-wavelength signal light guided along a single nanofiber with a switching peak power of ∼3.2 W.

Abstract:Electromagnetic band-gap structure with slow-wave effect is instrumental in effectively controlling electromagnetic wave propagation. In this paper, we theoretically analyze equivalent circuit model of electromagnetic band-gap structure based on graphene and evaluate its potential applications. Graphene electromagnetic band-gap based on parallel planar waveguide is investigated, which display good characteristics in dynamically adjusting the electromagnetic wave propagation in terahertz range. The same characteristics are retrieved in a spiral shape electromagnetic band-gap based on coplanar waveguide due to tunable conductivity of graphene. Various potential terahertz planar devices are expected to derive from the prototype structures.

Abstract:Guided THz wave characteristics in a parallel-plate waveguide (PPWG) consisting of ferroelectric film (LiNbO3 and LiTaO3) and multilayer graphene (MLG) is studied in this paper, with their low and tunable attenuation valley predicted. The electrical conductivity of MLG is calculated by a set of closed-form equations with the coupling effect between the bottom graphene layer (BGL) and its substrate taken into account carefully, while the dispersive behavior of ferroelectric film itself is described by the Lorentz model over an ultra-wide THz band. It is shown that the guided TM-mode propagation can be adjusted effectively by changing temperature, frequency, optical pumping intensity, MLG layer number, film thickness and its transverse optical-phonon frequency. Moreover, one low attenuation valley of TM-mode in such ferroelectric-graphene waveguide is captured, which can be exploited for developing some THz planar tunable waveguides with ultra-low loss.

Abstract:A bandwidth-tunable optical passband filter based on graphene–silicon waveguide is proposed. The device is designed by utilizing a structure with four triple series-coupled microring resonators. By changing the Fermi level of graphene to lead to the variation of the modal effective index, the transmission spectra of triple series-coupled microring resonators can be coherently combined to provide the adjustable bandwidth as desired. A detailed analysis of the designed device is presented. Numerical simulations show that the effective bandwidth tuning range from 2.70 to 6.30 nm can be obtained when each microring resonator is independently controlled. With the maximum bandwidth tunability, the designed tunable filter has a minimum extinction ratio larger than 92.35 dB.

Abstract:We propose a graphene-based photonic crystal (PC) slow light waveguide, which is realized by creating periodical air holes in a silicon layer to achieve spatially varying chemical potentials of graphene. The structure is optimized around 30 THz, and a large group index of 166.6 is obtained, with a very low propagation loss of −2.1 dB/um. The corresponding normalized delay-bandwidth product reaches as high as 4.00. Furthermore, the slow light performance can be dynamically tuned by changing a bias voltage. The center frequency of the slow light waveguide can be tuned between 19.1 THz and 27.4 THz. Our results suggest that graphene-based PC structures are very promising for slow light devices.

Abstract:We have systematically investigated the wideband slow light in two-dimensional material graphene, revealing that graphene exhibits much larger slow light capability than other materials. The slow light performances including material dispersion, bandwidth, dynamic control ability, delay-bandwidth product, propagation loss and group-velocity dispersion are studied, proving graphene exhibits significant advantages in these performances. A large delay-bandwidth product has been obtained in a simple yet functional grating waveguide with slow down factor c / v g at 163 and slow light bandwidth Δω at 94.4 nm centered at 10.38 μm, which is several orders of magnitude larger than previous results. Physical explanation of the enhanced slow light in graphene is given. Our results indicate graphene is an excellent platform for slow light applications, promoting various future slow light devices based on graphene.
Broadband Graphene/Glass Hybrid Waveguide Polarizer

Abstract:In this letter, a broadband planar-lightwave-circuit-type graphene/glass hybrid waveguide polarizer has been demonstrated. The polarizing effect of the polarizer is based on the difference in the attenuation between the two orthogonally polarized guided modes. The buried depth and the width of the ion-exchange glass waveguide are optimized to 2.6 and 11.5 μm, respectively. The polarization extinction ratio of the polarizer is ~27 dB in the telecommunication band with ~4-mm graphene coating length along the propagation direction. In addition, the polarization extinction ratio can be further increased by decreasing the chemical potential of the graphene film.

Abstract:A graphene-silicon hybrid waveguide with a dielectric spacer is proposed to enhance the nonlinear response in ultra-wide wavelength range by applying graphene's broadband highly nonlinear optical properties. The chemical potential of the graphene layer is tuned to satisfy the resonance condition and hence a low propagation loss is obtained. The dielectric spacer is used for avoiding additional free-carrier-absorption loss due to carrier interchange between the silicon core and the graphene layer. Aiming at the special waveguide structure with ultra-thin graphene layer, a full-vectorial theoretical model is developed to analyze its nonlinear properties. The waveguide dimensions are optimized in terms of the nonlinear parameter. The proposed hybrid waveguide exhibits high nonlinearity enhancement in an ultra-broad wavelength region covering near-infrared and mid-infrared bands. The conversion efficiency for a degenerate four-wave mixing process reaches -18.5 dB only with a pump power of 0.5 W and a waveguide length of tens of microns. In the wavelength range of 1.3-2.3 μm, the conversion efficiency can be kept stable by adopting suitable waveguide geometry and length. The corresponding 3-dB bandwidth can reach 40-110 nm for each fixed pump. The graphene-silicon hybrid waveguide has the potential to support chip-scale nonlinear applications in both near- and mid-infrared bands.

Abstract:Slow light, a technology to control the optical signal by reducing the group velocity, has been widely studied to obtain enhanced nonlinearities and increased phase shifts owing to its promoting of the light–matter interaction ability. In this work, a wideband slow light is achieved in a simple one-dimensional fishbone grating waveguide. A flat band indicating slow light with a group index of 13 and bandwidth over 10 nm is obtained by the plane wave expansion calculation, and the corresponding experimental results agree well with the theoretical prediction. A step taper is designed to compensate the coupling loss. The proposed fishbone grating waveguide is a good candidate for wideband slow light devices in light communication.

Abstract:We systematically investigated graphene-based slot and multi-slot waveguides. A tri-slot waveguide which significantly enhances the light-graphene interaction was experimentally demonstrated with low insertion loss. By integrating a dual-layer graphene h-BN heterostructure on the tri-slot waveguide, a high efficiency modulator is designed, which combines the advantages of high modulation efficiency (0.376 dB/μm), low insertion loss (0.01 dB/μm), large modulation bandwidth (∼0.13 THz) and low power consumption (∼0.128 pJ/bit). Our work may promote the development of future high efficient graphene-based optical devices.

Abstract:Graphene has emerged as a promising material for active plasmonic devices in the mid-infrared (MIR) region owing to its fast tunability, strong mode confinement and long-lived collective excitation. In order to realize on-chip graphene plasmonics, several types of graphene plasmonic waveguides (GPWGs) have been investigated and most of them are with graphene ribbons suffering from the pattern-caused edge effect. Here we propose a novel nanoplasmonic waveguide with a pattern-free graphene monolayer on the top of a nano-trench. It shows that our GPWG with nanoscale light confinement, relatively low loss and slowed group velocity enables a significant modulation on the phase shift as well as the propagation loss over a broad band by simply applying a single low bias voltage, which is very attractive for realizing ultra-small optical modulators and optical switches for the future ultra-dense photonic integrated circuits. The strong light-matter interaction as well as tunable slow light is also of great interest for many applications such as optical nonlinearities.

Abstract:The two-dimensional material, represented by graphene, is an immediate research focus of interdisciplinary fields, such as nanophotonics and life sciences. The unique advantages of surface plasmon polaritons, such as enhanced transmission and sub-wavelength structure, bring opportunities for achieving all optical circuits. In this paper, based on graphene, silicon dioxide, air cavity, and so on, a novel channel surface plasma waveguide was developed. By contrasting the waveguide characteristics of graphene and gold, it is found that the mode field could be restricted in air cavity region using graphene, and the deep sub-wavelength of light field was restrained. Besides, through finite element simulation, it is investigated that propagation losses could be as low as 0.019 dB/μm, the area of normalized mode field could be as low as 0.014 λ2, and the limiting factor is 0.5. Compared with the current waveguide, the above result shows that the propagation losses is an order of magnitude lower; 20.52% of limiting factor is promoted, besides; better waveguide characteristics could be obtained with realization of sub-wavelength optical field limit. Meanwhile, the production process of waveguide structure is simple, and it is an important way to solve the high speed and miniaturization and integration of optoelectronic integrated technology in the future.

Abstract:The honey structure of graphene is used in telecommunications, flexible displays, photonic devices, batteries, and electronic devices, where it achieves high heat dissipation efficiency. In order to obtain the high performances in the field of waveguide and sensor, we proposed a tunable plasmonic waveguide sensor based on periodic grating. The proposed device not only has the outstanding waveguide performance in gain threshold and propagation loss, which can reach 0.00745 dB/nm and 501 cm−1, respectively, but also the temperature sensitivity can achieve 0.28 nm/°C. The performances of waveguide and sensor can be tuned by changing the electronic characteristics of graphene, the structural parameters, and temperature, which indicate that the proposed device has considerable potential in ultra-speed plasma sensor devices, photonic integrated circuits, and tunable optical devices.

Abstract:Graphene is emerging as a broadband optical material which can be dynamically tuned by electrostatic doping. However, the direct application of graphene sheets in optoelectronic devices is challenging due to graphene's small thickness and the resultant weak interaction with light. By combining metal and graphene in a hybrid plasmonic structure, it is possible to enhance graphene-light interaction and thus achieve in situ control of the optical response. We show that the effective mode index of the bonding plasmonic mode in metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides is particularly sensitive to the change in the optical conductivity of a graphene layer in the gap. By incorporating such MIM structures in optic antenna designs, we demonstrate an electrically tunable coupled antenna array on graphene with a large tuning range (1100 nm, i.e., 250 cm(-1), nearly 20% of the resonance frequency) of the antenna resonance wavelength at the mid-infrared (MIR) region. Our device exhibits a 3 dB cutoff frequency of 30 MHz, which can be further increased into the gigahertz range. This study confirms that hybrid metal-graphene structures are promising elements for high-speed electrically controllable optical and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:At present, an important research area is the search for materials that are compatible with CMOS technology and achieve a satisfactory response rate and modulation efficiency. A strong local field of graphene surface plasmon polariton (SPP) can increase the interaction between light and graphene, reduce device size, and facilitate the integration of materials with CMOS. In this study, we design a new modulator of SPP-based cycle branch graphene waveguide. The structure comprises a primary waveguide of graphene-LiNbO3-graphene, and a secondary cycle branch waveguide is etched on the surface of LiNbO3. Part of the incident light in the primary waveguide enters the secondary waveguide, thus leading to a phase difference with the primary waveguide as reflected at the end of the branch and interaction coupling to enhance output light intensity. Through feature analysis, we discover that the area of the secondary waveguide shows significant localized fields and SPPs. Moreover, the cycle branch graphene waveguide can realize gain compensation, reduce transmission loss, and increase transmission distance. Numerical simulations show that the minimum effective mode field area is about 0.0130 lambda(2), the gain coefficient is about 700 cm(-1), and the quality factor can reach 150. The structure can realize the mode field limits of deep subwavelength and achieve a good comprehensive performance.

Abstract:The concept of incorporating graphene into nanophotonic waveguides has pullulated into massive broadband optoelectronic applications with compact footprint. We theoretically demonstrate that by solely altering the dimension design of graphene-laminated silicon waveguides, the phase, amplitude, and polarization of the fundamental propagating modes can all be effectively tailored under different bias voltages. Different device functionalities, including optical amplitude/phase modulators and polarizers, are ascribed into the devising of the effective mode index. A comprehensive analysis and unified design scenarios upon waveguide geometries are summarized, with fabrication robustness and moderate process complexity. Moreover, design examples are manifested. We report a TM-mode-based phase modulator, achieving a π phase shift within an active length of 49.2 μm with dual graphene layers. A feasible polarization-independent amplitude modulator is also demonstrated, where the discrepancy of the imaginary parts of the effective mode index between the two fundamental modes is kept at an order of 10-5 over a broad wavelength range from 1.35 to 1.65 μm.
