Abstract:We observe a strong polarization dependent optical loss of in-plane light propagation in silicon waveguide due to the presence of graphene. Both transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) modes are efficiently (~3 dB) coupled to the graphene on suspended membrane waveguides using an apodized focusing subwavelength grating. The TE mode has 7.7 dB less excess optical loss than the TM mode at 1.5 {\mu}m for a 150 {\mu}m long waveguide in good agreement with a theoretical model. All-optical modulation of light is demonstrated. There is also a large thermally induced change in waveguide effective index because of optical absorption in graphene.
Broadband Graphene/Glass Hybrid Waveguide Polarizer

Abstract:In this letter, a broadband planar-lightwave-circuit-type graphene/glass hybrid waveguide polarizer has been demonstrated. The polarizing effect of the polarizer is based on the difference in the attenuation between the two orthogonally polarized guided modes. The buried depth and the width of the ion-exchange glass waveguide are optimized to 2.6 and 11.5 μm, respectively. The polarization extinction ratio of the polarizer is ~27 dB in the telecommunication band with ~4-mm graphene coating length along the propagation direction. In addition, the polarization extinction ratio can be further increased by decreasing the chemical potential of the graphene film.

Abstract:Guided THz wave characteristics in a parallel-plate waveguide (PPWG) consisting of ferroelectric film (LiNbO3 and LiTaO3) and multilayer graphene (MLG) is studied in this paper, with their low and tunable attenuation valley predicted. The electrical conductivity of MLG is calculated by a set of closed-form equations with the coupling effect between the bottom graphene layer (BGL) and its substrate taken into account carefully, while the dispersive behavior of ferroelectric film itself is described by the Lorentz model over an ultra-wide THz band. It is shown that the guided TM-mode propagation can be adjusted effectively by changing temperature, frequency, optical pumping intensity, MLG layer number, film thickness and its transverse optical-phonon frequency. Moreover, one low attenuation valley of TM-mode in such ferroelectric-graphene waveguide is captured, which can be exploited for developing some THz planar tunable waveguides with ultra-low loss.

Abstract:We report an integrated implementation of a surface plasmonic TE-pass polarizer on a silica-on-silicon waveguide. The effect of waveguide width and length on polarization extinction ratio (PER) were investigated. For a 10 mm device, PER in excess of 48 dB with TE mode loss of approximately 0.8 dB was recorded. In addition, we experimentally demonstrate a wavelength dependence of PER smaller than 3 dB with a width of 5.5- 6.5 mu m device over the C band from 1520-1580 nm. We also present a theoretical analysis and numerical simulation of this architecture that are in good agreement with each other and the experimental results. By improving the fabrication process and PER measurement method, over 60 dB PER and less 0.1 dB TE mode loss can be obtained for a 10 mm polarizer according to our model, which is expected to be widely applicated in sensors such as optical gyroscopes.
A Te/Tm Independent Polarizer Based On Graphene Interferometer

Abstract:We proposed a versatile polarizer independent with the polarization of the incident light by coating the graphene on the silicon waveguide. The proposed polarizer works at two operation states: TE-pass state and TM-pass state, where the variation of mode effective index is different for the two states. Therefore it is able to combine TE-pass and TM-pass polarizer into one single component. The proposed device owns a compact size of 69.65 mu m*2 mu m, high extinction ratio 19.15dB for TE-pass polarizer and 20.68dB for TM-pass polarizer, respectively. Furthermore, this device exhibits a wide working bandwidth from 1500nm to 1800nm.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate waveguide and microring resonator (MRR) polarizers by integrating 2D graphene oxide (GO) films onto silicon (Si) photonic devices. The 2D GO films with highly anisotropic light absorption characteristic are on-chip integrated with precise control over their thicknesses and sizes. Detailed measurements are performed for the fabricated devices with different GO film thicknesses, coating lengths, and Si waveguide widths. The results show that a maximum polarization-dependent loss of ∼17 dB is achieved for the hybrid waveguides, and the hybrid MRRs achieved a maximum polarization extinction ratio of ∼10 dB. We also characterize the wavelength- and power-dependent response for these polarizers. The former demonstrates a broad operation bandwidth of over ∼100 nm, and the latter verifies performance improvement enabled by photothermal changes in GO films. By fitting the experimental results with theoretical simulations, we find that the anisotropy in the loss of GO films dominates the polarization selectivity of these devices. These results highlight the strong potential of 2D GO films for realizing high-performance polarization selective devices in Si photonic platforms.

Abstract:Abstract By exploiting the electroabsorption effect of graphene, we present a graphene-based polarization-insensitive optical modulator. The waveguide structure consists of a silica substrate, high-index silicon strip waveguide, Si 3 N 4 dielectric spacer, two graphene layers, and two metal electrodes. The modulator performance is comprehensively studied in terms of attenuation, insertion loss, modulation depth, and bandwidth. We achieve broadband >16 dB attenuation graphene-based optical modulator over a 35 nm wavelength range (covering C band) with an imbalance of no >1 dB and insertion loss of <2 dB for transverse magnetic and transverse electric polarized modes. Moreover, the electrical properties such as energy per bit consumption ( E bit ) are also studied.

Design and Fabrication of a TE-pass Polarizer Based on Silicon Nitride Optical Waveguide

Abstract:An on-chip TE-pass polarizer working near 850nm band is designed and fabricated on silicon nitride platform. The structure is very simple, using a straight silicon nitride waveguide separated from a metal strip by a low index silicon oxide spacer layer. By optimizing the thickness of the spacer layer, the metal strip introduces more loss for TM mode than TE mode. The measured extinction ratio of the fabricated device is around 20dB over a 16nm wavelength range from 837nm to 853nm for a 3mm-long polarizer.

Abstract:The concept of incorporating graphene into nanophotonic waveguides has pullulated into massive broadband optoelectronic applications with compact footprint. We theoretically demonstrate that by solely altering the dimension design of graphene-laminated silicon waveguides, the phase, amplitude, and polarization of the fundamental propagating modes can all be effectively tailored under different bias voltages. Different device functionalities, including optical amplitude/phase modulators and polarizers, are ascribed into the devising of the effective mode index. A comprehensive analysis and unified design scenarios upon waveguide geometries are summarized, with fabrication robustness and moderate process complexity. Moreover, design examples are manifested. We report a TM-mode-based phase modulator, achieving a π phase shift within an active length of 49.2 μm with dual graphene layers. A feasible polarization-independent amplitude modulator is also demonstrated, where the discrepancy of the imaginary parts of the effective mode index between the two fundamental modes is kept at an order of 10-5 over a broad wavelength range from 1.35 to 1.65 μm.

Abstract:We presented a versatile polarizer, independent on the polarization of the incident light, by coating the silicon waveguide with graphene. Abstract:The two-dimensional material, represented by graphene, is an immediate research focus of interdisciplinary fields, such as nanophotonics and life sciences. The unique advantages of surface plasmon polaritons, such as enhanced transmission and sub-wavelength structure, bring opportunities for achieving all optical circuits. In this paper, based on graphene, silicon dioxide, air cavity, and so on, a novel channel surface plasma waveguide was developed. By contrasting the waveguide characteristics of graphene and gold, it is found that the mode field could be restricted in air cavity region using graphene, and the deep sub-wavelength of light field was restrained. Besides, through finite element simulation, it is investigated that propagation losses could be as low as 0.019 dB/μm, the area of normalized mode field could be as low as 0.014 λ2, and the limiting factor is 0.5. Compared with the current waveguide, the above result shows that the propagation losses is an order of magnitude lower; 20.52% of limiting factor is promoted, besides; better waveguide characteristics could be obtained with realization of sub-wavelength optical field limit. Meanwhile, the production process of waveguide structure is simple, and it is an important way to solve the high speed and miniaturization and integration of optoelectronic integrated technology in the future.

Abstract:Based on different photonic band structures of TE and TM polarization modes in periodic multilayers, a method to realize the waveguide polarizer is proposed. The waveguide structure contains a SiO2 core layer sandwiched between two multilayers of alternately stacked poly-Si and SiO2, and the whole structure can be grown on a Si substrate. Its propagation characteristics are studied theoretically. High extinction ratio over 40 dB at a light wavelength of 1.3 μm is expected in the waveguide of only 40 μm long, accompanied with very low propagation loss of the passive TE mode. These characteristics are very suitable for the applications in integrated optics. The fabrication of this polarizer structure by using the magnetron sputtering method is demonstrated.

Abstract:A graphene-silicon hybrid waveguide with a dielectric spacer is proposed to enhance the nonlinear response in ultra-wide wavelength range by applying graphene's broadband highly nonlinear optical properties. The chemical potential of the graphene layer is tuned to satisfy the resonance condition and hence a low propagation loss is obtained. The dielectric spacer is used for avoiding additional free-carrier-absorption loss due to carrier interchange between the silicon core and the graphene layer. Aiming at the special waveguide structure with ultra-thin graphene layer, a full-vectorial theoretical model is developed to analyze its nonlinear properties. The waveguide dimensions are optimized in terms of the nonlinear parameter. The proposed hybrid waveguide exhibits high nonlinearity enhancement in an ultra-broad wavelength region covering near-infrared and mid-infrared bands. The conversion efficiency for a degenerate four-wave mixing process reaches -18.5 dB only with a pump power of 0.5 W and a waveguide length of tens of microns. In the wavelength range of 1.3-2.3 μm, the conversion efficiency can be kept stable by adopting suitable waveguide geometry and length. The corresponding 3-dB bandwidth can reach 40-110 nm for each fixed pump. The graphene-silicon hybrid waveguide has the potential to support chip-scale nonlinear applications in both near- and mid-infrared bands.

Abstract:We demonstrate that by inserting bi-layer graphene inside silicon waveguide, the modulation ability of the overall waveguide can be greatly enhanced. A Mach-Zehnder modulator based on this structure is proposed and the calculated results show the modulator exhibits an excellent performance in terms of small footprint (35 μm2) and high extinction ration (31 dB). Besides, it requires low applied voltage and can be compatible with CMOS technology.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a polarization-independent optoelectronic modulator based on the electrical absorption effect of graphene. Firstly, we use the simulation software COMSOL Multiphysics to design the structure, and find via changing the applied voltage on both ends of the graphene that the equivalent refractive index of graphene can be changed, thus changing the light absorption capacity of the modulator. The waveguides in the transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) modes have almost the same extinction coefficient by making a double-layer graphene ridge structure in the center of the silicon-based waveguide, which can achieve approaching modulation depth in the TM and TE modes. At 1550 nm wavelength, the two-dimensional cross-section of the structure is analyzed by the FEM method using COMSOL Multiphysics to obtain the effective refractive index of the structure. The simulation results show that when the distance between the double-layer graphene isolation layer is d = 20 nm, the TE and TM modes can achieve extinction ratios up to 110 dB over the wide communication band by selecting appropriate “ON” and “OFF” switching points. The bandwidth is 173.78 GHz and the insertion loss is only 0.0338 dB.

Abstract:At present, an important research area is the search for materials that are compatible with CMOS technology and achieve a satisfactory response rate and modulation efficiency. A strong local field of graphene surface plasmon polariton (SPP) can increase the interaction between light and graphene, reduce device size, and facilitate the integration of materials with CMOS. In this study, we design a new modulator of SPP-based cycle branch graphene waveguide. The structure comprises a primary waveguide of graphene-LiNbO3-graphene, and a secondary cycle branch waveguide is etched on the surface of LiNbO3. Part of the incident light in the primary waveguide enters the secondary waveguide, thus leading to a phase difference with the primary waveguide as reflected at the end of the branch and interaction coupling to enhance output light intensity. Through feature analysis, we discover that the area of the secondary waveguide shows significant localized fields and SPPs. Moreover, the cycle branch graphene waveguide can realize gain compensation, reduce transmission loss, and increase transmission distance. Numerical simulations show that the minimum effective mode field area is about 0.0130 lambda(2), the gain coefficient is about 700 cm(-1), and the quality factor can reach 150. The structure can realize the mode field limits of deep subwavelength and achieve a good comprehensive performance.

Abstract:We systematically investigated graphene-based slot and multi-slot waveguides. A tri-slot waveguide which significantly enhances the light-graphene interaction was experimentally demonstrated with low insertion loss. By integrating a dual-layer graphene h-BN heterostructure on the tri-slot waveguide, a high efficiency modulator is designed, which combines the advantages of high modulation efficiency (0.376 dB/μm), low insertion loss (0.01 dB/μm), large modulation bandwidth (∼0.13 THz) and low power consumption (∼0.128 pJ/bit). Our work may promote the development of future high efficient graphene-based optical devices.
