Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrated a four-channel wavelength-division-multiplex (WDM) 560 Gbit/s 128 quadrature amplitude modulation (128QAM)-Discrete MultiTone (DMT) signal transmission in a short reach interconnect. Coordinated discrete Fourier transform-spread and preequalization are jointly used to simultaneously overcome serious frequency domain power attenuation and reduce the peak-to-average power ratio of the DMT signal. An additional postdecision-directed least mean square equalizer is used afterward to further compensate the channel response and mitigate the devices’ implementation penalty. These proposed algorithms and equalizer are validated through experiment in this paper, we achieved the highest capacity signal transmission in the four-channel WDM transmission system using intensitymodulation and directdetection over a 2.4-km single mode fiber with a bit-error-ratio under the hard-decision forward error correction limit of 3.8 × 10 -3 .

Abstract:We report the successful transmission of 64 Tb/s capacity (640 107 Gb/s with 12.5 GHz channel spacing) over 320 km reach utilizing 8-THz of spectrum in the C+L -bands at a net spectral efficiency of 8 bit/s/Hz. Such a result is accomplished by the use of raised-cosine pulse-shaped PDM-36QAM modulation, intradyne detection, both pre- and post-transmission digital equalization, and ultra-large-area fiber. We discuss in detail the digital modulation technology and signal processing algorithms used in the experiment, including a new two-stage, blind frequency-search-based frequency-offset estimation algorithm and a more computationally efficient carrier-phase recovery algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a joint processing algorithm for carrierless amplitude and phase modulation (CAP) signal to improve the system performance in both short-reach and metro network. Utilizing our proposed method, 112 Gb/s/lambda CAP-64 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)-based transmission over 50 km of standard single mode fiber (SSMF) is experimentally achieved with a bandwidth-limited direct-detection receiver under the hard decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3). Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate 112 Gb/s/lambda CAP-16 QAM transmission over 480 km of SSMF with direct detection. With our proposed joint processing algorithm, both nonlinearity and In-phase/quadrature (IQ) imbalance can be mitigated. More than 3 dB receiver sensitivity gain is achieved at the HD-FEC threshold after 400-km transmission compared with the result using traditional nonlinear compensation.

Abstract:Carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP) modulation is generating increasing interest for short reach optical communications. In this letter, we present the use of a decision-directed least mean square (DD-LMS) adaptive equalization algorithm for CAP128/256 transmission systems. A novel preconvergence scheme using aided threshold decision is proposed, called decision-assisted modified cascaded multimodulus algorithm. With the help of a DD-LMS-based equalizer, we demonstrate for the first time transmission of 10-Gb/s CAP128/256 signal over 40-km standard single mode fiber using low-cost directly modulated lasers.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate C-band 2 x 56 Gb/s pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM)-4 signal transmission over 100 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) using 18 GHz direct-modulated lasers (DMLs) and direct detection, without inline optical amplifier. A delay interferometer (DI) at the transmitter side is used to extend the transmission reach from 40 to 100 km. A digital Volterra filter at the receiver side is used to mitigate the nonlinear distortions. We obtain an average bit error ratio (BER) of 1.5 x 10(-3) for 2 x 56 Gb/s PAM-4 signal after 100 km SSMF transmission at the optimal input power, which is below the 7% forward error correction (FEC) threshold (3.8 x 10(-3)). Abstract:We demonstrate a 112 Gbit/s/λ CAP over 480 km of SSMF with low-cost direct detection. A joint processing algorithm is employed to improve system performance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that single-wavelength 100G signal transmission is experimentally achieved over 480 km of SSMF with CAP-16 and direct detection.

Abstract:carrier-less amplitude and phase modulation (CAP) 64QAM with high spectrum efficiency for mm-wave fiber-wireless transmission. The performance of novel CAP modulation with high order QAM, for the first time, is investigated in the mm-wave fiber-wireless transmission system. One I/Q modulator is used for mm-wave generation and base-band signal modulation based on optical carrier suppression (OCS) and intensity modulation. Finally, we demonstrated a 24-Gb/s CAP-64QAM radio-over-fiber (ROF) system over 40-km stand single-mode-fiber (SMMF) and 1.5-m 38-GHz wireless transmission. Abstract:We demonstrate three-channel WDM transmission of 12.84-Tb/s/ch polarization division multiplexed (PDM) 64-QAM over 320-km SMF-28 with hybrid amplification spans. Each 10-Tb/s superchannel comprises one hundred Nyquist DWDM subchannels in 1275-GHz spectrum occupancy, yielding a spectral efficiency of 7.9 b/s/Hz. The BER of all channels after transmission over 320 km is measured smaller than 2×10-2, the third generation FEC limit.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel synthesizing method for high-speed 8-ary quadratic-amplitude modulation (QAM) optical signal generation using commercial optical modulators with binary electrical driving signals. Using this method, we successfully generated 114-Gb/s pulse-duration modulation (PDM)-8QAM optical signals. Intradyne detection of PDM-8QAM optical signals with robust blind polarization demultiplexing has been demonstrated by using a new cascaded multimodulus equalization algorithm. With return-to-zero-shaped PDM-8QAM modulation and the proposed blind polarization demultiplexing algorithm, we demonstrate transmission of a record 32-Tb/s fiber capacity (320 × 114 Gb/s) over 580 km of ultralow-loss single-mode fiber-28 fiber by utilizing C+L-band erbium-doped fiber-amplifier-only optical amplification and single-ended coherent detection technique at an information spectral efficiency of 4.0 bit/s·Hz.
