Abstract:In this paper, we propose an ant-based algorithm for dynamic routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) in WDM optical networks under the wavelength continuity constraint. By adopting a new routing table structure and keeping a number of ants in the network to cooperatively explore the network states and continuously update the routing tables, our new ant algorithm can efficiently support the ants' foraging tasks of route selection and wavelength assignment in WDM networks, and allow a connection to be setup promptly on arrival with a small setup time. Extensive simulation results based on the ns-2 network simulator indicate that the proposed algorithm can adapt well to traffic variations and achieves a lower blocking probability than the fixed routing algorithm.

Abstract:To provide determined network services, including high bandwidth, low data loss, low latency, and low jitter services, to transmission and computing resource integration networks, a novel routing optimization method is proposed. Based on physical-layer collision awareness and transparent packet duplication, delay and deletion, high-reliability and low-latency all-optical communication can be achieved. In addition, this method has the potential to be adapted to rapidly time-varying topologies and link lengths in wireless optical networks. In this paper, the processing and distribution of data packets in this routing optimization method are described; a structure of the all-optical switching node for supporting this routing optimization method is presented; and the influence of switching node performance, such as the maximum cache time, the maximum multicast packet number and the perception latency, on end-to-end availability are analyzed by simulation.
A Seamless Dual-Link Handover Scheme Suitable for High-Speed Rail

Abstract:LTE with large capacity and high speed is the most promising standard of wireless data communications technology to be used in Chinese high-speed rail(HSR). Because of over-frequent handover in HSR, the experience of passengers is highly degraded. Wireless Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning in such high speed movement is more difficult to be tackled than in a fixed-wired environment. Seamless handover attempts to provide a given QoS during the process of migration from one cell to another. It can reduce the interruption period to nearly zero. In this paper, we revised an existent seamless dual-link handover scheme where the Train Relay Station relays the data of users in the train and two antennas are mounted in the top of the train and designed a set of new handover procedures suitable for HSR communications. We defined a velocity threshold(VT). If the speed of train exceeds VT, two target base stations are prepared for user equipment(UE) when handover is triggered. The simulation results show that in the proposed scheme the communication interruption probability is under 0.01 when the train is at speed of 350 kilometers per hour.

Abstract:High-speed railway (HSR) has demonstrated tremendous growth worldwide, and is currently attaining a maximum velocity of 575 km/h. Such a high speed makes mobile wireless communications extremely challenging for HSR since the handover (HO) rate increases with speed, resulting in a high call dropping probability. By employing a dedicated distributed antenna system (DAS) along with the two-hop network architecture, in this paper, we propose a frequency switch (FSW) scheme to mitigate the persistent HO issue in conventional HSR wireless communication systems. The proposed scheme significantly alleviates interruption time associated with the traditional HO process, providing an effective scheme when the train moves across small cells covered by remote antenna units (RAUs) belonging to the same central unit (CU). In order to further reduce the HO command failure probability, an enhanced fast predictive HO mechanism is proposed by starting the HO process in advance, when the train moves from one RAU to the next one controlled by the adjacent CU. Analytical results show that compared to the traditional HO scheme, the proposed schemes can improve the system performance substantially by delivering ultra-reliable low-latency communications with a reduced HO/FSW rate.

Abstract:An alternate routing algorithm is proposed for the problem of routing and assignment of wavelength in Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical transport network. It can more accurately model the state of the whole network after the establishment of new calls than other alternate algorithms proposed before. The route-wavelength pair which has the least influence on the state of the whole network is chosen to accommodate the coming call. The algorithm performs better than other alternate routing algorithms in most cases we studied. Fairness is improved significantly too.

Abstract:Currently, 5G control/user (C/U) plane split heterogeneous network is a potential technology to provide high-speed rail (HSR) with higher capacity, better reliability and less co-channel interference communication. However, the Quality of Service (QoS) of the wireless HSR communication is greatly degraded due to frequent handover. In addition, a complete Inter- macrocell handover in C/U plane split network requires both the C-plane and U-plane service succeed during their individual handovers, which results in more handover problems. Some efforts have been made to design a handover scheme for C/U plane network. Motivated by this idea, we redesign a seamless dual- link handover scheme with optimized threshold for C/U plane split network. According to our proposed three principles, the optimized handover trigger algorithm depends not only on the hysteresis exceeding level, but also on the Received Signal Strength (RRS) of both antennas. Furthermore, the front antenna has more chances to execute handover while the rear antenna still keeps communicating with an Evolved Node B (eNB) in the new handover procedure. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme reduces the handover failure probability remarkably.

Abstract:In delay tolerant networks (DTNs), the connections between the source and destination node are unstable because of the frequent movements of nodes, which makes the data forwarding algorithms one of the key problems in DTNs. Furthermore, the different moving speeds of nodes can greatly affect their ability to transmit packets. In this paper, we mainly focus upon the data forwarding problem in DTNs with speed heterogeneity (DFSH). We first consider the spread of infectious diseases in multiple populations, after which the delivery delay and the number of copies are calculated. We then introduce the concept of moving energy which is defined as the product of the speed and the number of nodes in unit distance and it is used to measure the data forwarding ability of each node. Based on this concept, we present a moving energy-based routing algorithm with speed heterogeneity (MRSH) which takes the nodes with higher moving energy to forward data packets. To test the theoretical model, we finally perform several extensive trace driven simulations and furthermore estimate the performance of MRSH algorithm. It indicates that MRSH, compared with the other three forwarding strategies, can greatly enhance the delivery ratio while reducing the delivery delay.

Abstract:The exponential growth of Internet traffic necessitates high-capacity optical networks and has also highlighted the importance of bandwidth-flexible and multi-granularity transport platforms. Improving both transport capacity and bandwidth flexibility is a significant challenge in optical networks. A bitrate flexible network architecture that is based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing has been proposed as a promising solution for meeting this challenge. In the current study, we focus on the online routing and spectrum assignment problems in the aforementioned network architecture and introduce a general solution for dynamic bitrate flexible traffic in distributed environments. A novel spectrum representation method based on continuous spectrum segments is introduced into the networks. Segment-based routing and signaling mechanisms provide general solutions that support both the conventional slot-based networks and the ideal fully gridless networks. The routing algorithms and spectrum selection approaches are demonstrated and compared in a simulation. Performance estimation indicates that random spectrum segment assignment achieves the lowest capacity blocking rate in light traffic, whereas the adaptive routing plus minimum residual spectrum scheme obtains the lowest capacity blocking rate under heavy traffic.

Abstract:In communication networks, traffic carried over long paths suffers from a higher call blocking probability (CBP) than those carried over short paths. This is a well-known fairness problem. Such a problem becomes more serious in wavelength-routed optical networks (WRONs) due to the wavelength continuity constraint. This paper aims to enhance the fairness characteristic in WRONs by the novel classified alternate routing (CAR) approach. As a foundation of this approach, the first K-shortest paths (KSP) between a designated source/destination node pair in a given network should be obtained simultaneously. This has been studied as the KSP problem in the literature. In this paper, a new loopless deviation (LD) algorithm for solving such a loopless KSP problem will be proposed. It outperforms existing solutions in terms of running time in real-life implementations. In order to measure the fairness characteristic, we first classify all connection requests into categories such as 1-hop traffic, 2-hop traffic, etc., according to the number of minimal hop count between the corresponding source/destination node pair. We then quantify the fairness characteristic by the ratio of the average CBP of each traffic category to that of 1-hop traffic such that CBP ratios with a value closer to 1 are preferred. We will show that such a measure criterion is more precise and robust than existing ones in the literature. Finally, numerical experiments will reveal that the CAR approach outperforms existing fairness enhancement methods when considering the comprehensive performance in terms of the balance between the fairness characteristic and the overall CBP feature.

Abstract:The heterogeneous network architecture based on control/user (C/U) plane split is a research hot spot in the fifth generation (5G) communication system. This new architecture for the high-speed railway (HSR) communication system can provide high quality of service (QoS) for the passengers, such as higher system transmission capacity, better transmission reliability, and lower co-channel interference. The relatively critical C plane is expanded and maintained in a reliable low-frequency band to guarantee transmission reliability, and the U plane is supported by the available high-frequency band to meet the increasing system capacity demands. However, there are still many problems to be solved in the C/U plane split network to ensure reliable transmission. In the HSR communication system, the C plane and the U plane are supported by the macro evolved NodeBs (eNBs) and the small eNBs, respectively. The handover between the different macro eNBs involves two types of handovers, which directly reduces its applicability and reliability in HSR. Therefore, a dual-link soft handover scheme for C/U plane split network in HSR is proposed in this paper. By deploying a train relay station (TRS) and two antennas in the train, the handover outage probability will be reduced. Moreover, the bi-casting is adopted to decrease the communication interruption time and the signaling flows of the intra-macro eNB handover and inter-macro eNB handover are designed in detail. Simulation results show that the proposed handover scheme can significantly reduce the outage probability and improve the handover success probability in the inter-macro eNB handover.

Dynamic Routing Algorithm for Large File Transport in Optical Network

Abstract:Many distributed computing applications need transfer large files between distributed locations as fast as possible. A dynamic routing algorithm for optical network is designed to modify existing transfers and spare network resources for new request to satisfy both old and new transfers' requirements. In data intensive application on circuit-switch optical network, light-path resources are scarce and there should be concurrent file transfers competing for the same fibers. In static routing optical network, if new coming file transfer cannot acquire light-path with enough bandwidth, it could only wait for the releasing of current used resources. Due to the waiting, the delay time will be large. So we use our dynamic routing algorithm to schedule and modify existing light-paths, to spare a light-path with enough bandwidth for new coming file. Our optimized target is to make every file finish transferring in less time, so we propose two objectives defined in the paper: one is to make maximal delay time of all tasks less and the other is to make average delay time less.The algorithm proposed has two mainly steps: 1) Routing process; 2) Dynamic routing process. In routing step, when task of file arrives we firstly get k random paths, then use Least Congestion Algorithm (LCA) (or Shortest Path Algorithm (SPA)) to get the primary path P1 of maximal residual bandwidth (RB) from k paths and the alternate path P2 of the second maximal RB. If the bandwidth of P1 is enough for this task, transfer the file in P1 path. If not, we go to the dynamic routing process. In the second process, get all the links of P1 then we change the existing light paths of tasks in the P1 path one by one to their alternative paths until we can get enough bandwidth of P1. In the dynamic routing process, we design two different queuing strategies. The first strategy is First Arrive First Modified (FAFM) strategy, namely we schedule the first arrival task firstly. The other is Larger Bandwidth First Modified (LBFM) and the file with larger bandwidth is scheduled firstly.By comparison of simulation results, we can prove that our two kinds of dynamic routing algorithms can get better results for both decreasing maximal delay time and average delay time than LCA and SPA routing algorithms. In the two queuing strategies, LBFM can get better results than FAFM strategy. The receivers in the destinations can get better results by using our dynamic routing algorithm.

Abstract:The invention relates to a routing selecting method of the wavelength routing light network, which can be realized according to steps as following on a control surface server of the wavelength routing light network: the server uses a special routing calculation way to respectively calculate a shortest routing for network business request on each wavelength platform, and respectively enquiry wavelength overhead spent by each routing from the preplaced wavelength spending database, and to added by personal routing overhead to obtain the total overhead of each routing, so as to choose the lowest total overhead routing to dynamically establish the routing. The invention provides a technical scheme whcich utilizes the wavelength overhead database maintained by the control surface server to execute routing selection from the network business request; based on no great modification the network routing module in existence, the invention realizes to avoid parallel business request disposal confliction, to reduce effectively blocking rate of the parallel business request in the wavelength routing light network, to reach a rather high utility ratio of network resource and to greatly improve the whole performance of the network.

Abstract:Wireless data network has experienced tremendous growth in the past few years. One of the common scenarios of using data wireless data network is while travelling in a train. Providing in-train wireless Internet access to multimedia applications (e.g., youtube) requires 3G/4G networks. While 3G/4G networks provide fast data access when users are static, it has significant latency when being used on the train. This is because 3G/4G networks use Mobile-IP that requires mobile nodes to register to foreign agents when handover occurs. This will introduced latency for the handover process. When registration is done, Mobile-IP suffers from triangular routing, which further decreases its performance. In this paper we argue that railway networking can be more effective through named data networking (NDN). Rather than using IP addresses, NDN provides a name-based paradigm that can achieve seamless handover. We analyze how NDN can support efficient handover and conduct simulation to test its performance. Results show the efficiency of NDN.

Abstract:Wavelength continuity constraint leads to inefficient utilization of wavelength channels and results in higher blocking probability in WDM optical transport networks. In order to weaken the inefficiency of the constraint, wavelength rerouting is used. Based on a wavelength graph model, the QoS-based wavelength rerouting strategy, dynamic selection method, is proposed. Simulation results of the network performance in different dynamic traffic loads are given. The results show that the method can not only meet the different QoS requirements of the client layer's service, but also utilize the finite networking resources efficiently with reduced blocking probability.

Abstract:With the development of high-speed railway and public growing demand on data traffic, people pay much more attention to provide high data rate and high reliable services under high mobility circumstance. Due to the higher data rate and lower system latency, long-term evolution (LTE) has been chosen as the next generation's evolution of railway mobile communication system by the International Union of Railways. However, there are still many problems to be solved in the high mobility applications of LTE, especially the higher handover failure probability, which seriously degrades the reliability of railway communication. This article proposes an optimized handover scheme, in which the coordinated multiple point transmission technology and dual vehicle station coordination mechanism are applied to improve the traditional hard handover performance of LTE. The scheme enables the high speed train to receive signals from both adjacent base stations and obtain diversity gain when it moves through the overlapping areas, so it improves the quality of the received signal and provides reliable communication between train and ground eNodeBs. Numerical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed scheme can decrease the outage probability remarkably during handover and guarantee the reliability of train to ground communication.
