Abstract:High-speed railway (HSR) has become one of the most preferable modes of transportation. With increased train speed, the rail wireless communication faces lots of challenges. One of them is the handover problem. The high handover failure rate and frequent handover due to the fast moving speed can cause serious communication interruption. In order to achieve seamless handover for HSR system, this paper utilizes distributed antenna systems (DASs) along with dual-layer architecture and proposes an improved handover scheme based on multi-criteria. The proposed handover scheme improves both the handover triggering probability and handover success rate, demonstrated by both the theoretical analysis and simulation results. The simulation results also show that the proposed scheme outperforms the traditional handover trigger scheme.

Abstract:To attain seamless handover and reduce the han- dover failure probability for high-speed railway (HSR) com- munication systems, this paper proposes a remote antenna unit (RAU) selection assisted handover scheme where two antennas are installed on high speed train (HST) and distributed antenna system (DAS) cell architecture on ground is adopted. The RAU selection is used to provide high quality received signals for trains moving in DAS cells and the two HST antennas are employed on trains to realize seamless handover. Moreover, to efficiently evaluate the system performance, a new met- ric termed as handover occurrence probability is defined for describing the relation between handover occurrence position and handover failure probability. We then analyze the received signal strength, the handover trigger probability, the handover occurrence probability, the handover failure probability and the communication interruption probability. Numerical results are provided to compare our proposed scheme with the current existing ones. It is shown that our proposed scheme achieves better performances in terms of handover failure probability and communication interruption probability.

Abstract:The heterogeneous network architecture based on control/user (C/U) plane split is a research hot spot in the fifth generation (5G) communication system. This new architecture for the high-speed railway (HSR) communication system can provide high quality of service (QoS) for the passengers, such as higher system transmission capacity, better transmission reliability, and lower co-channel interference. The relatively critical C plane is expanded and maintained in a reliable low-frequency band to guarantee transmission reliability, and the U plane is supported by the available high-frequency band to meet the increasing system capacity demands. However, there are still many problems to be solved in the C/U plane split network to ensure reliable transmission. In the HSR communication system, the C plane and the U plane are supported by the macro evolved NodeBs (eNBs) and the small eNBs, respectively. The handover between the different macro eNBs involves two types of handovers, which directly reduces its applicability and reliability in HSR. Therefore, a dual-link soft handover scheme for C/U plane split network in HSR is proposed in this paper. By deploying a train relay station (TRS) and two antennas in the train, the handover outage probability will be reduced. Moreover, the bi-casting is adopted to decrease the communication interruption time and the signaling flows of the intra-macro eNB handover and inter-macro eNB handover are designed in detail. Simulation results show that the proposed handover scheme can significantly reduce the outage probability and improve the handover success probability in the inter-macro eNB handover.

Abstract:With the development of high-speed railway and public growing demand on data traffic, people pay much more attention to provide high data rate and high reliable services under high mobility circumstance. Due to the higher data rate and lower system latency, long-term evolution (LTE) has been chosen as the next generation's evolution of railway mobile communication system by the International Union of Railways. However, there are still many problems to be solved in the high mobility applications of LTE, especially the higher handover failure probability, which seriously degrades the reliability of railway communication. This article proposes an optimized handover scheme, in which the coordinated multiple point transmission technology and dual vehicle station coordination mechanism are applied to improve the traditional hard handover performance of LTE. The scheme enables the high speed train to receive signals from both adjacent base stations and obtain diversity gain when it moves through the overlapping areas, so it improves the quality of the received signal and provides reliable communication between train and ground eNodeBs. Numerical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed scheme can decrease the outage probability remarkably during handover and guarantee the reliability of train to ground communication.

Abstract:The next-generation of wireless systems represents a heterogeneous environment with different access networks technologies that differ in bandwidth, latency or cost. The most challenging problem is the seamless vertical mobility across heterogeneous networks. In order to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the vertical handover for such heterogeneous networks, this paper proposes a novel handover network decision mechanism with Q O S provision based on analytic hierarchy process AHP and grey relational analysis GRA methods. We have successfully simulated and tested our approach using the OPNET simulation tool. The simulation results revealed that the proposed algorithm can not only work efficiently for 3G TD-SCDMA, WLAN IEEE 802.11,4G system but also reduce the complexity of implementation significantly.

Abstract:In recent years, high-speed railways (HSRs) are being developed rapidly all over the world because of their convenience, safety, comfort, and other advantages. However, the reliability and security of HSR wireless communication systems have faced severe challenges, such as the Doppler effect, complicated wireless channel model, frequent handovers and so on. The International Union of Railways is pushing the evolution of the global system for mobile communications for railway (GSM-R) internationally. In this study, a high-speed based adaptive beamforming handover scheme is proposed to improve the handover performance for HSR wireless communication systems. When the high-speed train enters the overlapping region, the serving evolved NodeB (eNodeB) and target eNodeB are using beamforming with different gain factors to improve the received signal quality. In addition, this scheme can dynamically adjust the handover hysteresis margins of the reference signal receiving power (RSRP) and the reference signal receiving quality (RSRQ) based on the speed and position. Simulation results have demonstrated that the proposed handover scheme can improve the handover performance by increasing the handover trigger probability and success probability effectively.

Abstract:A location based gradual beamforming and soft handover scheme for high speed train (HST) equipped with linearly distributed multi-antennas is presented in this paper. The simple and effective gradual beamforming is done based on the priori location information and achieves the array gain, statistical optimal beamforming and tapered beamforming are both analyzed here. The statistical inter-channel interference (ICI) caused by Doppler effect at high speed is taken into account. Along with the movement of HST, the power allocated to the service base station (SBS) is gradually decreased while that to the target base station (TBS) increased, aiming to optimize the outage probability or sum rate. In this way, without explicit connecting and disconnecting to the BSs, soft handover is achieved for the moving HST. Moreover, the beamforming and power allocation parameters are progressively and linearly adjusted by exploiting the linear mobility of HST within a small time interval, making the proposed algorithms very efficient.

Abstract:This paper provides a new approach to solve the handover problem in high mobility cellular communication networks. In particular, the mobile node, e.g, the high-speed train(HST), is equipped with multiple antennas by which it finds the target base station (BS) quickly with only receive beamforming. When only imperfect channel state information (CSI) is available, the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the receive beamformer will be interfered by signals from different nearby BSs, which may lead to possible error in the selection of target BS. To deal with this, two methods, i.e., maximum-ratio combining (MRC) and Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE), are proposed to obtain the optimal beamforming vectors. Simulation results show that both the proposed methods perform well, and the MMSE approach has good robustness.

Abstract:This paper firstly analyzes the handover mechanism of vehicle-mounted base station technology in high speed railway system, and finds that the communication interruption of the physical layer will last for a period of time although the switch of MAC layer has been completed. In order to solve this problem, an improved switch mechanism is proposed in this paper in order to ensure the continuality of communication. Then the data transmission rule between RAUs and the train will be discussed through using queue theory. The original mechanism and the improved mechanism are modeled as the loss Geom/G/1 system with interruptions and vacation respectively. And the analytical equations of the loss rate and the waiting delay are deduced. Then, the numerical simulations of the two mechanisms are discussed and the relationship between the packet loss rate, the waiting delay, and the other parameters is obtained respectively. At the same time, the performance of the two mechanisms are compared by setting the same parameter values in order to verify the superiority of the proposed mechanism and its greatest advantage, that is, the improved mechanism can be compatible with all handover mechanisms.

Abstract:High-speed railway (HSR) has demonstrated tremendous growth worldwide, and is currently attaining a maximum velocity of 575 km/h. Such a high speed makes mobile wireless communications extremely challenging for HSR since the handover (HO) rate increases with speed, resulting in a high call dropping probability. By employing a dedicated distributed antenna system (DAS) along with the two-hop network architecture, in this paper, we propose a frequency switch (FSW) scheme to mitigate the persistent HO issue in conventional HSR wireless communication systems. The proposed scheme significantly alleviates interruption time associated with the traditional HO process, providing an effective scheme when the train moves across small cells covered by remote antenna units (RAUs) belonging to the same central unit (CU). In order to further reduce the HO command failure probability, an enhanced fast predictive HO mechanism is proposed by starting the HO process in advance, when the train moves from one RAU to the next one controlled by the adjacent CU. Analytical results show that compared to the traditional HO scheme, the proposed schemes can improve the system performance substantially by delivering ultra-reliable low-latency communications with a reduced HO/FSW rate.

Theory Analysis of the Handover Challenge in Express Train Access Networks (ETAN)

Abstract:To handle the handover challenge in Express Train Access Networks (ETAN), mobility fading effects in high speed railway environments should be addressed first. Based on the investigation of fading effects in this paper, we obtain two theoretical bounds: HO-Timing upper bound and HO-Margin lower bound, which are helpful guidelines to study the handover challenge today and in the future. Then, we apply them to analyze performance of conventional handover technologies and our proposal in ETAN. This follow-up theory analyses and simulation experiment results demonstrate that the proposed handover solution can minimize handover time up to 4 ms (which is the fastest one so far), and reduce HO-Margin to 0.16 dB at a train speed of 350 km/h.

Abstract:In future 5G communication systems, supporting high-quality wireless communications in high-mobility scenarios becomes very essential. Although many existing works indicate that increasing transmit power is able to reduce the handover failure probability (referred to as the power greedy scheme) through improving the radio condition or received signal strength, it goes against the requirement of green system design. In this paper, we investigate the effect of power adjustment on handover performance from the perspective of reducing the "uncertainty" in handover procedure in high-speed railway communications systems by embedding it into the existing handover procedure. It is shown that, with power adjustment, the handover performance can be improved without increasing extra energy consumption. The power adjustment-assisted handover scheme is applied to a high-speed railway scenario with distributed antenna system (DAS) cells. Both the blanket transmission-based handover scheme and the remote antenna unit selection transmission-based handover scheme are discussed for DAS cells. To evaluate the performance, the handover probability, handover failure probability, and communication interruption probability associated with two handover schemes are analyzed. Moreover, two new performance metrics, named handover occurrence probability and handover failure occurrence probability, are defined to efficiently evaluate the handover performance versus the position of the train. Both the analytical and the numerical results show that introducing power adjustment into handover gives ability to achieve a better performance compared with the current existing ones. Moreover, the power adjustment-assisted handover scheme is capable of achieving the similar system performance to existing power greedy scheme but without increasing energy consumption.

Abstract:With the booming development of high-speed railways (HSRs), key technologies of wireless communications need to be constantly innovated. In particular, the frontier issue of low delay of the handover for the fifth generation (5G) in fast-moving scenarios has attracted attention from both industry and academia. Based on an analysis of a large number of measured data and the location of the user equipment (UE), a fast handover algorithm is proposed to solve the problem of long delay for a train moving at high speed in a 5G-railway (5G-R). By calculating the speed of a train and its direction of movement, a reasonable handover mode is selected and the handover chain of neighboring cells is identified. The location of the train can be calculated to determine whether UE enters the defined identification zone of pre-handover. Depending on the values collected in the measurement report, the command of the handover is triggered when the weight of the target cell is greater than that of the source cell. Our experimental results show that the delay of the fast handover algorithm is reduced by 2.03%, and the success rate of the handover is increased by 0.42%. Research directions for smart railways are discussed based on these findings.

Abstract:To provide the seamless mobility in heterogeneous wireless networks, the handoff decision strategy is regarded as a significant and challenging issue. In this paper, we propose a handoff decision algorithm with the parallel transmission characteristic of the mobile multimode terminal in heterogeneous wireless networks. In our algorithm, the model of Markov decision process is used to determine the optimal handoff policy in order to maximize the expected total reward during the transmission. Simulation results show that compared to some existing handoff decision algorithms, the proposed algorithm outperforms in terms of the expected total reward, the expected number of handoffs and the probability of connection dropping.

Abstract:For the 5G-R wireless communication system of the next-generation high-speed railway, there is a problem of single algorithm consideration when handover is carried out. In high-speed environment, it is easily affected by handover risk, which leads to the problem of low handover success. To solve the above problems, this study proposed a next-generation high-speed railway handover decision algorithm, which is based on improved Criteria Importance through Intercrieria Correlation and Technology for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (CRITIC-TOPSIS) theory. Firstly, considering the factors of reference signal receiving power (RSRP), reference signal receiving quality (RSRQ), and co-frequency interference, an improved CRITIC-TOPSIS multi-attribute joint handover decision method is proposed, which overcomes the problem of single consideration of handover. Then, a handover risk assessment model based on prospect theory is constructed, and the handover risks of trains triggered at different positions are analyzed. Finally, the comprehensive utility value of train handover is obtained by normalization, and the optimal handover position is recommended according to the comprehensive utility value, so as to complete the handover. The experimental results show that the success rate of train handover exceeds 99.5% in viaduct, urban area, open area, and mountainous area. In addition, under different operation scenarios, when the train runs at a speed of 200 km/h to 500 km/h, the handover success rate can be between 99.51% and 99.68%. The proposed method can meet the requirement that the success rate of quality of service (QoS) of 5G-R wireless communication system is greater than 99.5%. The research results provide a theoretical reference for the evolution of the next-generation 5G-R high-speed railway system.

Abstract:Express train transportation is becoming a major tool for carrying approximately one million passengers daily in China today. To provide broadband information services for train passengers, the greatest challenge is achieving a seamless handover solution to guarantee wireless service continuity. This motivates us to incorporate sensor technology into Radio over Fiber architecture to construct an Express Train Access Network (ETAN), where the deployed sensor network captures the train movement status, which can indicate the wireless signal strength. Since the train moves on a fixed rail with fixed direction, it is possible to form an intelligent handover decision system, in which a critical movement state can exactly trigger an optical switch unit in the central station to carry out the handover procedure. Theory analyses and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed architecture can perform handover within 22 ms at a train speed of 350 km/h, providing wireless services for users without disruption, even for a cell radius as small as 100 m.

Abstract:As a key technology for highly reliable communication in the fifth generation mobile communication for railway (5G-R) high-speed railway wireless communication system, once the handover fails, it will pose a serious risk to the safe operation of high-speed railway. As the speed of high-speed trains continues to increase, the handover will become more frequent, and how to improve the success rate of the handover is a key problem that needs to be solved. In this paper, we proposed an optimization algorithm based on the interval type 2 feature selection recurrent fuzzy neural network (T2RFS-FNN), which is a recurrent fuzzy neural network with interval type 2 feature selection, to address the problem of fixed hysteresis threshold and single consideration for the handover algorithm between the control plane and the user plane of the high-speed railway under 5G-R. The algorithm integrates reference signal receiving power (RSRP). Reference signal receiving quality (RSRQ) and throughput to optimise the hysteresis threshold. First, a feedforward neural network structure is designed to implement fuzzy logic inference, and an interval type-two Gaussian subordination function is used to improve the nonlinear expressiveness of the model. Then, a feature selection layer is added to determine the output of the affiliation function, which completes the optimization of the hysteresis threshold and overcomes the drawback of the fixed hysteresis threshold of the handover algorithm. Finally, simulation analysis of the control-plane and user-plane handover algorithms is carried out separately. The results show that the proposed method can effectively improve the success rate and reduce the ping-pong handover rate compared to the comparison algorithms. The results provide a theoretical reference for the speedup of high-speed railway trains and the evolution of the global system for mobile communications for railway (GSM-R) to 5G-R.

Abstract:This paper introduces one kind of new handover algorithm that measure location information of the UE (User Equipment) to execute handover (HO) procedure of LTE (Long-Term Evolution) eNodeB (evoloved NodeB) based on GPS (Global Position System) instead of Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP) and Reference Signal Received Quality (RSRQ). The focus is on the impact that the GPS-Based handover algorithm compares to A3 event handover algorithm based on the longitude and latitude in LTE high-speed railway networks. The longitude and latitude parameters have been designed and implemented in a dynamic system level simulator and has been investigated for the two kinds of radio channels (The Plain and Mountain Environment) in a high-speed railway (HSR) simulation scenario. The packet delay and the packet loss ratio have been simulated in LTE system simulation platform and have been studied the influence factors via the simulation. The simulation results show that the GPSbased HO algorithm has better performance than the classical A3 event HO algorithm in the two kinds of radio channels for high-speed mobility environment.

Abstract:With the fast development of high-speed railways, a call for fulfilling the notion of communication at "anytime, anywhere" for high-speed train passengers in the Train Operating Control System is on the way. In order to make a realization of that, new railway wireless communication networks are needed. The most promising one is the Long Term Evolution for Railway which will provide broadband access, fast handover, and reliable communication for high mobility users. However, with the increase of speed, the system is subjected to high bit error rate, Doppler frequency shift and handover failure just like other system does. This paper is trying to solve these problems by employing MIMO technique. Specifically, the goal is to provide higher data rate, higher reliability, less delay, and other relative quality of services for passengers. MIMO performance analysis, resource allocation, and access control for handover and various services in a two-hop model are proposed in this paper. Analytical results and simulation results show that the proposed model and schemes perform well in improving the system performances.
