Abstract:With the fast development of high-speed railways, a call for fulfilling the notion of communication at "anytime, anywhere" for high-speed train passengers in the Train Operating Control System is on the way. In order to make a realization of that, new railway wireless communication networks are needed. The most promising one is the Long Term Evolution for Railway which will provide broadband access, fast handover, and reliable communication for high mobility users. However, with the increase of speed, the system is subjected to high bit error rate, Doppler frequency shift and handover failure just like other system does. This paper is trying to solve these problems by employing MIMO technique. Specifically, the goal is to provide higher data rate, higher reliability, less delay, and other relative quality of services for passengers. MIMO performance analysis, resource allocation, and access control for handover and various services in a two-hop model are proposed in this paper. Analytical results and simulation results show that the proposed model and schemes perform well in improving the system performances.

Abstract:Abstract High-speed trains, though prevalent in Europe and Asia, are not yet a reality in the US. But interest and industry engagement are growing, especially around commercial hubs close to commuter homes for alleviating commute times. With support from the Federal Railroad Administration in the United States, the authors are exploring the design requirements, challenges, and technology capabilities for wireless communication between passenger cars, on-board systems and with trackside infrastructure, all using next-generation radio access technologies. Key aspects of this work focus on interoperability, modularity of the architecture to facilitate a future-proof design, high-performance operations for passenger services and ultra-low latency capabilities for train control operations. This paper presents the theoretical studies and computer simulations of the proposed network architectures, as well as the results of an LTE/5G field test framework using an OpenAir-Interface (OAI)-based software-defined radio (SDR) approach. Through various test scenarios the OAI LTE/5G implementation is first evaluated in a lab environment and through field tests. These tests provide ground-truth data that can be leveraged to refine the computer simulation model for evaluating large-scale environments with high fidelity and high accuracy. Of particular focus in this evaluation are performance aspects related to delay, handover, bit error rate, frequency offset and achievable uplink/downlink throughput.
Rateless Coded Uplink Transmission Design for Multi-User C-RAN

Abstract:Cloud radio access network (C-RAN) is a promising technology for the Internet of Things (IoT). In C-RAN, the remote radio head (RRH) and baseband unit (BBU) in the conventional base station are separated, and each BBU is backward centralized into a virtual BBU pool. In this paper, we consider the uplink transmission for the two-user C-RAN with two RRHs under a block fading channel. A novel rateless coded transmission scheme is designed. During each transmission round, each user keeps transmitting to the RRHs using Raptor code until the BBU pool feeds back an acknowledgement (ACK). With the proposed scheme, each user does not require the instant channel state information, which greatly reduces the system overhead. We also design the quantizer at the RRHs and the iterative multi-user detector and decoder at the BBU pool, based on the belief propagation (BP) algorithm. For the Raptor code applied at each user, we optimize the corresponding output node degree profile, based on extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) analysis for the decoding process at the BBU pool. The resulted degree profiles are optimal in an average sense under all possible channel states. The simulation results show that the rateless coded transmission scheme with the optimized degree profiles outperforms the benchmark degree profile in both bit error rate and average system throughput. Moreover, the achieved performance is close to the theoretical limit.

Abstract:Cloud radio access networks (C-RANs) have been proposed to provide high energy-spectral efficiency and high data rate at low cost. In this correspondence paper, we introduce a novel C-RAN deployment scheme that is complementary to traditional cellular radio networks. The key idea is to install the remote radio heads (RRHs) of the C-RAN in a load-balanced way to lighten the transmission burden of the backhauls between the RRHs and the centralized baseband unit pool, and to activate the RRHs on demand so as to reduce system-wide energy consumption. Numerical results show that our proposed method performs well in practical scenarios. It provides QoS-guaranteed performance with relatively low capital expenditure and operating expenditure.

Abstract:With rapid development in China and worldwide, reliable and broadband wireless communications in high-speed railway (HSR) become a stringent challenge recently. The current dedicated railway systems, GSM-R and LTE-R, cannot satisfy the demand of ultra-high data rates in the HSR communications. In this paper, a network design for mm-wave and THz wireless communications that co-exists with the dedicated systems in HSR is developed. Moreover, dynamic beamsteering including beamforming to overcome dropoffs and a soft handover protocol among neighboring mm-wave and THz base stations are presented. Furthermore, a complete propagation channel model is developed for the mm-wave and THz communications in HSR, by considering the weather influences including rain, fog, sand and dust. Numerical results show that the capacity in HSR reaches 27 Gbps at 300 GHz with the bandwidth of 50 GHz while the coverage is no more than 300 m. However, fog and heavy rain cause additional attenuations while the efforts of sand and dust are small.

Abstract:A hybrid broadcasting and wireless communication network for high speed railway is proposed in this paper. The advantages of the broadcasting and the wireless network are respectively used. Then,the hot and common contents can be delivered to the users or the terminals by the broadcasting network,and the individual contents can be accessed by the wireless network. The proposed network can effectively improve the throughput of all the users in high speed scenarios. The laboratory test of DTMB system and the computer simulation of LTE-R system show that the proposed hybrid network has good performances,the average equivalent downlink throughput for every user is effectively improved,and the proposed scheme can meet the needs of many emerging services on the high speed railway.

Abstract:Cloud Radio Access Network(C-RAN) is a new architecture of radio access network which integrates centralized processing, cooperative radio and real-time cloud-computing. Unlike the traditional architecture, the baseband units in C-RAN are based on software radio. In this paper, the differences of the baseband processing technologies between C-RAN and the traditional architecture are discussed. After that, a Low Density Parity Check(LDPC)-encoding multi-carrier communication system is presented as a typical example. It illustrates the good anti-noise performance of software baseband processing technology and the low latency of the traditional architecture.

Abstract:With centralized processing, cooperative radio, real-time cloud computing, and clean infrastructure, C-RAN is a "future-proof" solution to sustain the mobile data explosion in future wireless networks. The technology holds great potential in enhancing LTE with the necessary capability to accommodate the unprecedented traffic volume that today's wireless cellular system is facing. However, the high density of RRHs in C-RANs leads to severe scalability issues in terms of computational and implementation complexities. This article discusses the challenges and recent developments in the technologies that potentially address the scalability issues of C-RANs. In particular, we focus on the collaborative signal processing, resource management, and green architecture of C-RAN systems. This article is a humble attempt to draw the attention of the research community to the following important question: how to leverage the revolutionary architecture of C-RAN to attain unprecedented system capacity at an affordable cost and complexity.

Abstract:High-speed railway (HSR) communications will become a key feature supported by intelligent transportation communication systems. The increasing demand for HSR communications leads to significant attention on the study of radio resource management (RRM), which enables efficient resource utilization and improved system performance. RRM design is a challenging problem due to heterogenous quality of service (QoS) requirements and dynamic characteristics of HSR wireless communications. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview on the key issues that arise in the RRM design for HSR wireless communications. A detailed description of HSR communication systems is first presented, followed by an introduction on HSR channel models and characteristics, which are vital to the cross-layer RRM design. Then we provide a literature survey on state-of-the-art RRM schemes for HSR wireless communications, with an in-depth discussion on various RRM aspects including admission control, mobility management, power control and resource allocation. Finally, this paper outlines the current challenges and open issues in the area of RRM design for HSR wireless communications.

Abstract:The heterogeneous network architecture based on control/user (C/U) plane split is a research hot spot in the fifth generation (5G) communication system. This new architecture for the high-speed railway (HSR) communication system can provide high quality of service (QoS) for the passengers, such as higher system transmission capacity, better transmission reliability, and lower co-channel interference. The relatively critical C plane is expanded and maintained in a reliable low-frequency band to guarantee transmission reliability, and the U plane is supported by the available high-frequency band to meet the increasing system capacity demands. However, there are still many problems to be solved in the C/U plane split network to ensure reliable transmission. In the HSR communication system, the C plane and the U plane are supported by the macro evolved NodeBs (eNBs) and the small eNBs, respectively. The handover between the different macro eNBs involves two types of handovers, which directly reduces its applicability and reliability in HSR. Therefore, a dual-link soft handover scheme for C/U plane split network in HSR is proposed in this paper. By deploying a train relay station (TRS) and two antennas in the train, the handover outage probability will be reduced. Moreover, the bi-casting is adopted to decrease the communication interruption time and the signaling flows of the intra-macro eNB handover and inter-macro eNB handover are designed in detail. Simulation results show that the proposed handover scheme can significantly reduce the outage probability and improve the handover success probability in the inter-macro eNB handover.

Abstract:With the emerging demands of new communication services, the contradiction between capacity demand and spectrum shortage of railway communication systems becomes more severe. How to provide broadband communication services has become the key goal of future smart high-speed railway (HSR) systems. Millimeter wave (mm-wave) frequency band has abundant spectrum resources and can provide communication services with large bandwidth. However, due to the high-speed of the train as well as the complexity and dynamics of environments, the communication link may be blocked randomly for a short time and will also lead to frequent handovers. In this paper, we adopt the promising intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) technology for a mm-wave HSR communication system. In order to improve system capacity, IRS is deployed to improve reflection transmission links, and optimization algorithms are designed for transceiver beamforming and IRS phase shift. In addition, given the specificity of the HSR scenario, we also formulate the average system ergodic capacity maximization problem and obtain upper bound on the average system ergodic capacity with statistical channel state information (CSI). Through extensive simulations, we verify that the proposed scheme performs significantly better than the other two baseline schemes in terms of average system throughput and average system ergodic capacity.

Abstract:In recent years, high-speed railways (HSRs) are being developed rapidly all over the world because of their convenience, safety, comfort, and other advantages. However, the reliability and security of HSR wireless communication systems have faced severe challenges, such as the Doppler effect, complicated wireless channel model, frequent handovers and so on. The International Union of Railways is pushing the evolution of the global system for mobile communications for railway (GSM-R) internationally. In this study, a high-speed based adaptive beamforming handover scheme is proposed to improve the handover performance for HSR wireless communication systems. When the high-speed train enters the overlapping region, the serving evolved NodeB (eNodeB) and target eNodeB are using beamforming with different gain factors to improve the received signal quality. In addition, this scheme can dynamically adjust the handover hysteresis margins of the reference signal receiving power (RSRP) and the reference signal receiving quality (RSRQ) based on the speed and position. Simulation results have demonstrated that the proposed handover scheme can improve the handover performance by increasing the handover trigger probability and success probability effectively.
A Seamless Dual-Link Handover Scheme Suitable for High-Speed Rail

Abstract:LTE with large capacity and high speed is the most promising standard of wireless data communications technology to be used in Chinese high-speed rail(HSR). Because of over-frequent handover in HSR, the experience of passengers is highly degraded. Wireless Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning in such high speed movement is more difficult to be tackled than in a fixed-wired environment. Seamless handover attempts to provide a given QoS during the process of migration from one cell to another. It can reduce the interruption period to nearly zero. In this paper, we revised an existent seamless dual-link handover scheme where the Train Relay Station relays the data of users in the train and two antennas are mounted in the top of the train and designed a set of new handover procedures suitable for HSR communications. We defined a velocity threshold(VT). If the speed of train exceeds VT, two target base stations are prepared for user equipment(UE) when handover is triggered. The simulation results show that in the proposed scheme the communication interruption probability is under 0.01 when the train is at speed of 350 kilometers per hour.

Abstract:With the development of wireless access technology and mobile internet, the demand of network traffic is growing rapidly. Traditional radio access network can not satisfy the requirement of ever growing capacity. C-RAN (Cloud-Radio Access Network) is a novel radio access network' architecture which can support growing users' needs. In C-RAN architecture, BBUs (Base Band Units) decouple from RRHs (Remote Radio Heads) and are centralized and shared among RRHs in BBU pool. RRHs can be flexibly and densely arranged to increase network capacity. But the deployment of dense network brings great pressure to network management. The current C-RAN architecture can not effectively deal with the changes of network station caused by users' mobility. The SDN technology can simplify and optimize the network management. Hence we propose a SDN-enabled C-RAN architecture, it can intelligently and dynamically build RAN under the control of SDN controller. And we put forward a use case to briefly describe the working procedure.

Abstract:Widespread deployment of high-speed railways in recent years brings huge demands for high-mobility broadband wireless communications. To provide broadband wireless access for passengers in the train, a well acknowledged approach is to apply a two-hop architecture in which users communicate with base stations (BSs) via a mobile relay (MR). Considering quality of service (QoS) requirement of passengers, a crucial issue in this two-hop architecture is how to match user data arrival process and time-varying wireless channel service process with delay constraint at the MR. We deal with this problem from the perspective of power allocation. For constant-rate data arrival and large-scale-fading wireless channel in high-speed railway scenarios, we first present a necessary and sufficient condition for avoiding buffer overflow as well as infinite delay with constant transmit power, and when the transmit power can be adapted, we present the delay constrained optimal power allocation (DCOPA). We find that the proposed DCOPA bridges traditional channel inversion and water filling, which are only suitable for special cases where delay is not allowed and delay is quite loose respectively. Besides, with DCOPA, we present the inherent tradeoff between delay and minimal average transmit power in the system, which provides the optimal operating point for delay constrained traffic at the MR.

Abstract:The inter-nodes communication bottleneck has been a key factor that restricts the large-scale expanding of scalable router's software architecture.To solve the problem, this paper introduces a transmission adapted sub-layer in the supporting model of traditional software architecture.Through feature extracting of the up-going data stream and pattern matching with registered task, data stream can then be classified and divided based on the content of information to increase the effective communication rate.The paper further analyzes the model's performance from task's three characteristics: Distribution rate, spread number and traffic rate, and provides an optimized task dispatching reference.It shows that the introduced transmission adapted sub-layer can reduce inter-layer redundant flow and extensibility bottleneck of communication.Finally, the presented experiment verifies the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:High-speed railway (HSR) has demonstrated tremendous growth worldwide, and is currently attaining a maximum velocity of 575 km/h. Such a high speed makes mobile wireless communications extremely challenging for HSR since the handover (HO) rate increases with speed, resulting in a high call dropping probability. By employing a dedicated distributed antenna system (DAS) along with the two-hop network architecture, in this paper, we propose a frequency switch (FSW) scheme to mitigate the persistent HO issue in conventional HSR wireless communication systems. The proposed scheme significantly alleviates interruption time associated with the traditional HO process, providing an effective scheme when the train moves across small cells covered by remote antenna units (RAUs) belonging to the same central unit (CU). In order to further reduce the HO command failure probability, an enhanced fast predictive HO mechanism is proposed by starting the HO process in advance, when the train moves from one RAU to the next one controlled by the adjacent CU. Analytical results show that compared to the traditional HO scheme, the proposed schemes can improve the system performance substantially by delivering ultra-reliable low-latency communications with a reduced HO/FSW rate.

Refracting Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted URLLC for Millimeter Wave High-Speed Train Communication Coverage Enhancement

Abstract:High-speed train (HST) has garnered significant attention from both academia and industry due to the rapid development of railways worldwide. Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication, known for its large bandwidth is an effective way to address performance bottlenecks in cellular network based HST wireless communication systems. However, mmWave signals suffer from significant path loss when traversing carriage, posing substantial challenges to cellular networks. To address this issue, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) have gained considerable interest for its ability to enhance cell coverage by reflecting signals toward receiver. Ensuring communication reliability, a core performance indicators of ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) in fifth-generation systems, is crucial for providing steady and reliable data transmissions along railways, particularly for delivering safety and control messages and monitoring HST signaling information. In this paper, we investigate a refracting RIS-assisted multi-user multiple-input single-output URLLC system in mmWave HST communications. We propose a sum rate maximization problem, subject to base station beamforming constraint, as well as refracting RIS discrete phase shifts and reliability constraints. To solve this optimization problem, we design a joint optimization algorithm based on alternating optimization method. This involves decoupling the original optimization problem into active beamforming design and packet error probability optimization subproblem, and discrete phase shift design subproblems. These subproblems are addressed exploiting Lagrangian dual method and the local search method, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate the fast convergence of the proposed algorithm and highlight the benefits of refracting RIS adoption for sum rate improvement in mmWave HST networks.

Abstract:As a promising paradigm to reduce both capital and operating expenditures, the cloud radio access network (C-RAN) has been shown to provide high spectral efficiency and energy efficiency. Motivated by its significant theoretical performance gains and potential advantages, C-RANs have been advocated by both the industry and research community. This paper comprehensively surveys the recent advances of C-RANs, including system architectures, key techniques, and open issues. The system architectures with different functional splits and the corresponding characteristics are comprehensively summarized and discussed. The state-of-the-art key techniques in C-RANs are classified as: the fronthaul compression, large-scale collaborative processing, and channel estimation in the physical layer; and the radio resource allocation and optimization in the upper layer. Additionally, given the extensiveness of the research area, open issues and challenges are presented to spur future investigations, in which the involvement of edge cache, big data mining, social-aware device-to-device, cognitive radio, software defined network, and physical layer security for C-RANs are discussed, and the progress of testbed development and trial test are introduced as well.
