Abstract:Optical modulation of terahertz surface plasmon polaritons (THz SPPs) propagating in an intrinsic indium antimonide surface is demonstrated in this paper. The modulation is mediated by the modification of free carrier density with optical illumination. Simulation and experimental results show that a THz modulator can be realized by tuning the propagation lengths of THz SPPs, which could be controlled to be larger or shorter than the distance of two razor blades used for the coupling of the THz wave and the THz SPPs. In comparison with conventional THz modulation approaches, this method of manufacturing is simpler and the switching bandwidth is wider. The maximum modulation frequency of the modulators is anticipated to be above gigahertz, thus leading to the possibility of communication applications using the THz baseband. Abstract:An experimentally feasible configuration of a prism coupler with an electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) medium layer, e.g., a semiconductor-quantum-dot (SQD) medium, deposited upon its prism base is suggested for generating tunable surface-plasmon-polariton resonance. Such surface-plasmon-polariton resonance and optical excitation of a surface plasmon wave can be manipulated by switchable quantum interference among SQD multilevel transitions driven by two external control fields. When an incident probe field is coupled into a surface plasmon wave excitation mode, the surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) resonance at the interface between the SQD medium layer and the substrate will arise, and the quantum-coherently controllable reflection spectrum of the probe field on the prism base can be achieved. In this process, destructive and constructive quantum interference (determined by the intensity ratio of the two external control fields) in the SQD multilevel system plays a key role for achieving the tunable reflection spectrum. The EIT-based surface-plasmon-polariton resonance presented here will have three characteristics (some of them would be attractive): (i) switchable quantum interference exhibited by surface plasmon wave excitation, (ii) quantum-coherently controllable surface plasmon polaritons by external optical fields, (iii) surface wave sensitive to dispersion of the SQD quantum coherent medium. Such an effect of controllable optical response based on the quantum-interference switchable surface-plasmon-polariton resonance in the EIT-prism coupler may find some potential applications in design of new photonic and quantum optical devices.

Abstract:An EIT (electromagnetically induced transparency)-based prism coupler is suggested for realizing tunable re∞ection spectrum via quantum coherence of phases in a multilevel system, where destructive and constructive quantum interference will occur among multilevel transition pathways that are driven by two external control flelds. In this prism coupler, a semiconductor-quantum-dot (SQD) medium layer, which can exhibit EIT and relevant quantum coherent efiects, bounds the prism base, and the two external control flelds are used to manipulate the probe fleld and the excited surface plasmon wave (on the SQD layer surface). Then the surface plasmon wave modes, which are generated by the probe fleld incident into this multilevel SQD medium layer, can be coherently tunable through the switchable quantum interference (destructive and constructive quantum interference) among the energy levels in the SQD systems. Such switchable quantum interference can be realized if we tune the intensities (i.e., adjust a proper intensity ratio) of the two control flelds that drive the SQD multilevel EIT system. New switchable photonic devices, which could flnd applications in photonic microcircuits as well as some areas in integrated optical circuits, could be designed based on this quantum-interference switchable surface plasmon resonance.

Abstract:We theoretically study the properties of terahertz (THz) surface plasmon (SP) propagating on semiconductor and thin dielectric surfaces by employing numerical calculations. The results show that the major energy of THz SP can be confined in the thin film on the surface of an InSb semiconductor. At the same time, the magnetic field dispersion curves and absorption coefficients of the structures are studied. We find that the absorption coefficient is related to the permittivity of the dielectric films. Therefore, we can sensitively detect a thin dielectric sample by broadband terahertz spectroscopy.

Abstract:In this work, we show that surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at terahertz (THz) frequencies can be tuned by changing the temperature in a periodically corrugated thin film of indium antimonide (InSb) sandwiched between air and dielectric. When a THz electromagnetic wave illuminates the structure, the temperature-dependent THz SPPs can be excited, and the first and second-order modes and their cross-couplings are observed in the band structure of SPPs. Reflection dips and transmission resonances are observed in those modes. By increasing temperature, transmissions decrease and reflections increase significantly. Our studies indicate that such effects may have potential applications in designing thermally controlled THz devices. (C) 2009 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

Abstract:Optical carrier incubation can effectively alter the electron transport properties of semiconductors; thus, optical switching of the plasmonic response of the semiconductor enables the ultrafast manipulation of the light at the nanoscale. Semiconductor nanostructures are promising platforms in on‐chip high‐speed plasmonic devices, owing to their high photoinduced electron injection efficiency at sub‐picosecond and compatibility with contemporary semiconductor technologies. The pure single‐crystalline InSb nanowires are promising plasmonic materials in the mid‐infrared region due to their high electron mobility and small electron effective mass. Here, we utilize the pump‐probe nanoscopy to investigate the pump fluence dependency and the dynamics of the non‐equilibrium plasmons in the InSb nanowires. We successfully switch the InSb plasmon by injecting the photo‐induced electrons and show the practical tuning of the plasmon frequency to one octave by increasing the pump fluence from 0 to 90 μJ/cm2. The density of the photo‐induced electrons in InSb nanowires is 18.8×1018 cm−3 with pump fluence as low as 90 μJ/cm2. The high electron mobility of the InSb supports the low‐loss plasmon with a damping rate of about 200 cm−1. The InSb nanowires' excellent plasmonic properties ensure they are a promising platform for upcoming high‐speed mid‐infrared plasmonic materials for informatic devices. Abstract:Magnetic-field-biased indium antimonide (InSb) is one of the most widely-discussed materials for supporting nonreciprocal surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), which have recently been shown to be topological. In this work, we provide a critical assessment of InSb as a magneto-optical SPP platform, and show that it is only viable under a narrow set of conditions.

Novel Terahertz Optical Switch Based on PIT Phenomenon and Lorentz Theory

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a structure consisting of graphene rings and square rings that enables broadband and tunable plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) effects. Through coupled Lorentz model analysis, we attribute the transmission window at 2.1 THz to the interference between the equipartitioned exciton resonance of the graphene ring pairs and the inductive-capacitive resonance of the graphene square ring pairs. We also investigate the effect of the variation of the rotation angle of the internal graphene square ring pair on the transmission characteristics. The structure not only achieves a maximum modulation depth (MDA) of 91%, insertion loss (IL) and extinction ratio (ER) of 0.3 dB and 10.94 dB, respectively, but also achieves a maximum detection sensitivity of 0.96 THz/refractive index unit (RIU). In contrast, this study achieves more than 90% modulation amplitude in the range of 0.3 THz with a simple design structure, providing new insights for research and applications in related fields.

Abstract:The ability to control the polarization of thermal emissions is important for fundamental science and many applications such as multichannel infrared emitters and chemical sensing. Most previous works on controlling the polarization of thermal emission arc based on changing geometric sizes of the structures. The active control remains elusive so far. Here, we propose a design to actively switch the polarization of thermal emission. A metal-insulator-metal plasmonic thermal emitter with phase changing material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) as the insulator is experimentally demonstrated. The thermal emitter with top GST and gold ellipses can excite third-order magnetic resonances with perpendicular polarization along both short radius and long radius. The polarization of the thermal emission can be rotated by 90 degrees at 9.55 mu m peak wavelength when GST phase changes from the amorphous phase to the 40% crystalline phase. Abstract:We designed a single-layer patterned graphene metasurface composed of four L-shaped graphene strips, four rectangular graphene strips, and meter-shaped graphene block. Metasurface creates dual plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) through the interaction between light and dark modes. The transmission characteristics of the structure are analyzed using the coupled mode theory and the finite element method, and the structure realizes the function of the dual-frequency optical switch. At frequencies of 3.72 THz and 6.24 THz, the optical switch modulation amplitudes are 98.04

Abstract:Abstract Tailoring light-matter interaction is essential to realize nanophotonic components. It can be achieved with surface phonon polaritons (SPhPs), an excitation of photons coupled with phonons of polar crystals, which also occur in 2d materials such as hexagonal boron nitride or anisotropic crystals. Ultra-confined resonances are observed by restricting the SPhPs to cavities. Phase-change materials (PCMs) enable non-volatile programming of these cavities based on a change in the refractive index. Recently, the plasmonic PCM In 3 SbTe 2 (IST) was introduced which can be reversibly switched from an amorphous dielectric state to a crystalline metallic one in the entire infrared to realize numerous nanoantenna geometries. However, reconfiguring SPhP resonators to modify the confined polaritons modes remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate direct programming of confined SPhP resonators by phase-switching IST on top of a polar silicon carbide crystal and investigate the strongly confined resonance modes with scanning near-field optical microscopy. Reconfiguring the size of the resonators themselves result in enhanced mode confinements up to a value of $${{{{{\boldsymbol{\lambda }}}}}}{{{{{\boldsymbol{/}}}}}}{{{{{\boldsymbol{35}}}}}}{{{{{\boldsymbol{.}}}}}}$$ λ / 35 . Finally, unconventional cavity shapes with complex field patterns are explored as well. This study is a first step towards rapid prototyping of reconfigurable SPhP resonators that can be easily transferred to hyperbolic and anisotropic 2d materials.

Abstract:Using light-induced localized surface plasmon interactions in a metamaterial, we present a plasmonic control of light absorption for photonic switching. We discuss that the present surface plasmon-induced photonic switching is comparable with coherence swapping in a tripod optical system based on electromagnetically induced transparency. This outcome opens a door to active controls of the surface plasmons in a metamaterial for potential applications of nano photonics.

Giant THz surface plasmon polariton induced by high-index dielectric metasurface

Abstract:We use computational approaches to explore the role of a high-refractive-index dielectric TiO2 grating with deep subwavelength thickness on InSb as a tunable coupler for THz surface plasmons. We find a series of resonances as the grating couples a normally-incident THz wave to standing surface plasmon waves on both thin and thick InSb layers. In a marked contrast with previously-explored metallic gratings, we observe the emergence of a much stronger additional resonance. The mechanism of this giant plasmonic resonance is well interpreted by the dispersion of surface plasmon excited in the air\TiO2\InSb trilayer system. We demonstrate that both the frequency and the intensity of the giant resonance can be tuned by varying dielectric grating parameters, providing more flexible tunability than metallic gratings. The phase and amplitude of the normally-incident THz wave are spatially modulated by the dielectric grating to optimize the surface plasmon excitation. The giant surface plasmon resonance gives rise to strong enhancement of the electric field above the grating structure, which can be useful in sensing and spectroscopy applications.

Abstract:A light‐magneto‐joint modulation is demonstrated for terahertz nonreciprocal photonic spin transmissions based on an undoped InSb. The pump laser and magnetic field conjunctively modulate the cyclotron resonance of the photoinduced non‐equilibrium carriers, and the InSb shows an active spin transmission with magnetic circular dichroism and Faraday rotation effect. Nonreciprocal materials and devices play an irreplaceable role in isolating, routing, and multiplexing. However, in the terahertz (THz) band, their active control mechanisms are still limited. Herein, a THz nonreciprocal photonic spin transmission is demonstrated in the undoped InSb actively manipulated by a light‐magneto‐joint modulation method, in which THz cyclotron resonance of the photoinduced carriers is conjunctively excited by both pump laser and external magnetic field. Moreover, a diffusion model of photoinduced non‐equilibrium carriers and its nonreciprocal dispersion model of magnetized plasma are established to interpret the experimental observation. The results indicate that the light‐magneto‐joint modulation achieves a broadband amplitude‐phase modulation with a higher modulation depth (>2π rad phase shift), as well as an active nonreciprocal spin transmission with magnetic circular dichroism (>20dB) and the Faraday rotation effect (>90°) in InSb, which is more efficient and faster than the traditional thermal excitation. Furthermore, the demonstration in a single‐frequency THz transmission system shows that this light‐magneto‐joint modulation mechanism in InSb can be multifunctionally applied in active control, isolation, and polarization conversion.

Abstract:Abstract Active control of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) is highly desired for nanophotonics. Here we employ a phase change material Ge 2 Sb 2 Te 5 (GST) to actively manipulate the propagating direction of SPPs at the telecom wavelength. By utilizing the phase transition induced refractive index change of GST, coupled with interference effects, a nanoantenna pair containing GST is designed to realize switchable one-way launching of SPPs. Devices based on the nanoantenna pairs are proposed to manipulate SPPs, including the direction tuning of SPP beams, switchable SPP focusing, and switchable cosine-Gauss SPP beam generating. Our design can be employed in compact optical circuits and photonics integration.

Abstract:Plasmonics takes advantage of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), which have the characteristics of strong subwavelength field confinement and enhancement. Plasmonic devices that confine light in regions with dimensions that are smaller than the wavelength have important application prospects in on-chip integrated circuits. Nonetheless, at terahertz frequencies, the weak confinement of SPPs and immature near-field technology hinder the development of related devices. Here, a highly confined SPP mode (spoof SPP) is implemented by structuring metal surfaces. Gradient index lenses with variable indices are constructed by fine-tuning the size of the pillars, and the characteristics of several different lenses are examined and explored by scanning near-field terahertz microscopy. Thus, terahertz waves are regulated and more possibilities are provided for further miniaturization and compactness of THz devices.
