Abstract:With the continuous scaling of CMOS devices, the increase in power density and system integration level have not only resulted in huge energy consumption but also led to elevated chip temperature. Thus, energy efficient task scheduling with thermal consideration has become a pressing research issue in computing systems, especially for real-time embedded systems with limited cooling techniques. In this paper, we design a two-stage energy-efficient temperature-aware task scheduling scheme for heterogeneous real-time multiprocessor system-on-chip (MPSoC) systems. In the first stage, we analyze the energy optimality of assigning real-time tasks to multiple processors of an MPSoC system, and design a task assignment heuristic that minimizes the system dynamic energy consumption under the constraint of task deadlines. In the second stage, the optimality of minimizing the peak temperature of a processor is investigated, and a slack distribution heuristic is proposed to improve the temperature profile of each processor under the thermal constraint, thus the temperature-dependent system leakage energy consumption is reduced. Through the extensive efforts made in two stages, the system overall energy consumption is minimized. Experimental results have demonstrated the effectiveness of our scheme.

Abstract:A rising horizon in chip fabrication is the 3D integration technology. It stacks two or more dies vertically with a dense, highspeed interface to increase the device density and reduce the delay of interconnects significantly across the dies. However, a major challenge in 3D technology is the increased power density, which gives rise to the concern of heat dissipation within the processor. High temperatures trigger voltage and frequency throttlings in hardware, which degrade the chip performance. Moreover, high temperatures impair the processor's reliability and reduce its lifetime. To alleviate this problem, we propose in this paper an OS-level scheduling algorithm that performs thermal-aware task scheduling on a 3D chip. Our algorithm leverages the inherent thermal variations within and across different tasks, and schedules them to keep the chip temperature low. We observed that vertically adjacent dies have strong thermal correlations and the scheduler should consider them jointly. Compared with other intuitive algorithms such as a Random and a Round-Robin algorithm, our proposed algorithm brings lower peak temperature and average temperature on-chip. Moreover, it can remove, on average, 46 percent of thermal emergency time and result in 5.11 percent (4.78 percent) performance improvement over the base case on thermally homogeneous (heterogeneous) floorplans.

Abstract:With the exponential increase in power density and the relentless scaling of transistors in VLSI circuits over the past decades, modern high-performance processors fall into a predicament of high energy consumption and elevated chip temperature. Such increased energy consumption and chip temperature could induce significant economic, ecological, and technical problems. Thus, energy-efficient task scheduling with thermal consideration has become a pressing research issue in sustainable computing systems, especially for battery-powered real-time embedded systems with limited cooling techniques. This paper tackles the above challenge through scheduling tasks leveraging correlated optimizations at two different scales. Precisely, a two-level thermal-aware energy-efficient scheduling algorithm for real-time tasks on DVFS-enabled heterogeneous MPSoC systems is developed considering the constraints of task deadlines, task precedences, and chip peak temperature limit. At the processor level, a multi-processor model supporting dynamic voltage/frequency scaling is transformed to a virtual multi-processor model supporting only one fixed frequency level. At the core level, real-time tasks are assigned to individual cores of the virtual processor under the constraints of task precedence and peak temperature limit. Through nicely interleaving optimizations at both levels, high quality task scheduling solutions can be computed efficiently. Extensive simulations of synthetic real-time tasks and real-life benchmarks are performed to validate the proposed algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm as compared to the benchmarking schemes.

Abstract:The high energy consumption has become one bottleneck in the development of the data centers (DCs), where the main energy consumers are the cooling system and the servers. Therefore, the joint optimization for the energy efficiency of the cooling system and the servers is a crucial problem, while most of previous works on energy saving only studies one of these two components in an isolated manner. In this paper, we propose a real-time strategy, rTCS (real-time Task Classification and Scheduling strategy), to jointly optimize the energy efficiency of these two components in the scenario where the tasks arrive dynamically. Strategy rTCS first labels the tasks to classify them according to their run time and end time with a time complexity of O(1) and a bounded space complexity. Then, rTCS schedules the tasks in real time based on their labels and the energy consumption model of the DC. Simulation results show that rTCS can effectively improve the energy efficiency of DCs.

Abstract:This paper focuses on scheduling periodic tasks on systems with discrete frequencies to achieve energy consumption minimization without sacrificing performance. Based on regulated directed a cyclic graphs, an approach is proposed to solve the problem. An algorithm called list scheduling-based task scheduling (LSTS) algorithm is designed to complete task mapping and frequency selection. We conduct experiments with a set of task sets on the power model of the AMD Mobile Athlon4 processor. Experimental results show that this approach can achieve great energy savings compared with the list scheduling algorithm.

Abstract:Due to power wall and slow performance improvement in a single core micro-architecture, multiple even many cores based processors rose as the main stream processor. Nevertheless, thermal threats regarding reliability and lifetime of processors are still among the major concerns which received much attention in terms of algorithms and hardware design to reduce processor temperature and keep application performance in recent years. In this paper, we propose and implement a thermal-aware Round-Robin scheduling algorithm for process migration in the Linux environment on a quad-core processor. Bearing designer's goals in mind, such as performance, load-balancing, and reliability, we managed to achieve much bigger temperature fall than previous results of Round-Robin scheduler on a dual-core processor as well as baseline Linux scheduler on a quad-core processor. Moreover, the performance loss due to scheduling overhead is modest in our approach. Our results indicate that thermal-aware scheduling is a valid approach to tackling thermal issues on multi-core processors. There will be increasing demand for thermal-aware scheduling as the number of cores on a single processor increases.

Abstract:Chip temperature becomes a critical design issue with technology scaling to nanometer-scale, especially for NoC systems with large number of cores and shrunken core size. To reduce peak temperature and balance spatial temperature distribution on NoC-based multi-cores chips, this paper proposes a temperature-aware task scheduling approach. The thermal profiles of tasks are first extracted by accurate temperature model. Then run-time task mapping heuristic is proposed considering transient core temperatures, thermal dissipation from adjacent cores, communication overheads and the thermal influence of physical position on chip. Voltage-frequency is also scaled down when timing constraint is met to reduce power consumption and core temperature. Experimental results show that the significant reduction of peak temperature and the temperature variance compared with the current approaches is achieved.

Abstract:The high power density in current multi-core microprocessors results in dramatic thermal fluctuations,which impair the processor's reliability and reduces its lifetime.In the paper,we propose a fuzzy control algorithm to make scheduling decisions on task migration.Through simulation analysis and implementation embedded into Linux 2.6.8.1 kernel scheduler on a P4 dual-pore processor,we lower the peak temperature successfully.We further choose random scheduling algorithm as reference to evaluate the efficiency of our fuzzy control algorithm.The experiment results show that the proportion of thermal limit violations decreases from 77% to 64% and performance improvement increase from 3.3% to 4.2%.These facts indicate our fuzzy control algorithm outperforms the random scheduling algorithm.

Abstract:Summary Optimizing energy consumption and maximizing throughput in multi‐core real‐time architectures through dynamic task scheduling is a critical design challenge. While significant attention has been devoted to addressing this challenge in the domain of real‐time multi‐core scheduling, the focus has primarily centered on considering periodic tasks as independent. However, the existing literature notably lacks comprehensive study of scheduling methodologies on multi‐core systems that consider dependent tasks, though typical real‐time systems execute tasks that share resources. Earlier studies have predominantly examined scenarios involving random new tasks and task instances (jobs), which are executed in different power levels. Each task (and job) has distinct execution time corresponding to each power level. By considering these parameters (power levels and execution times of jobs), various combinations of energy signatures have been found to attain an optimum system state. Building upon this prior research, our paper extends the scope to encompass task scheduling in multi‐core systems with task dependencies. We introduce a novel approach that categorizes dependent tasks into ASAP (as soon as possible) and ALAP (as late as possible) groups, prioritizing task execution based on task mobility—defined as the disparity between the last cycle the task can be scheduled in and the current cycle. Furthermore, our model demonstrates an approach for efficient scheduling of sporadic and aperiodic tasks within this framework. Through experimental validation using randomized task sets, our results indicate that the proposed model achieves a minimum of 5% reduction in normalized total energy consumption compared to existing methodologies.

Round robin algorithm regularly rotates tasks to each core for equal amount of time,therefore,it balances temperature between cores more effectively. Moreover,it has little impact on throughput.

Abstract:With the continued scaling of the CMOS devices, the exponential increase in power density has strikingly elevated the temperature of on-chip systems. Dynamic voltage/frequency scaling is a widely utilized system level power management technique to reduce the energy consumption and lower the on-chip temperature. However, scaling the voltage or frequency for thermal management leads to an increase in soft error rates, thus has adverse impact on system reliability. In this paper, the authors propose a stochastic thermal-aware task scheduling algorithm that considers soft errors in real-time embedded systems. For the given customerdefined soft error related target reliability and the maximum peak temperature, the proposed scheduling algorithm generates an energy-efficient task schedule by selecting the energy efficient operating frequency for each task and alternating the execution of hot tasks and cool tasks at the scaled operating frequency. The proposed stochastic scheduling algorithm features the consideration of uncertainty in transient fault occurrences. To handle the uncertainty, a fault adaptation variable a is introduced to adapt task execution to the stochastic property of fault occurrences. An energy efficiency factor 8 is also introduced to facilitate the enhancement of energy efficiency by maximizing the energy saved per unit slack. Extensive simulations of synthetic real-time tasks and real-life benchmarking tasks were performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm consumes up to 17.8% less energy as compared to the benchmarking schemes, and the peak temperature of the proposed algorithm is always below the maximum temperature limit and can be up to 9.6 C lower than that of the benchmarking schemes. Abstract:SummaryThe continually increasing energy consumption represents a critical issue in modern heterogeneous computing systems. With the aid of dynamic voltage frequency scaling (DVFS), task scheduling is considered an effective software‐based technique for reducing the total energy consumption and minimizing the overall schedule length (makespan). A natural solution is to reclaim the slack time in a given time‐efficient schedule, which is also referred to as a “two‐pass” method or a “rescheduling” method. A number of studies have focused on slack reclamation to achieve energy reductions through heuristics; although, these methods offer suboptimal solutions. In this article, the rescheduling optimization problem is formulated as a linear program for minimizing an energy objective function subject to precedence and deadline constraints implied in the given schedule. Two types of decision variables, ie, frequency duty factors and task intervals, are defined to set up the linear model. Consequently, an optimal solution to the problem can be provided in a straightforward manner by a linear programming solver, which suggests that such a rescheduling problem belongs to the P (polynomial time) class. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach and demonstrate that the performance is superior to that of other competitive algorithms in terms of both energy saving and runtime efficiency.

Abstract:As power density increases with high technology, the high temperature has threatened the system performance, reliability and even system safety. In this paper, we propose a temperature-aware task scheduling approach which combines low-overhead Time-Slice Scaling (TSS) with Alternative Scheduling schemes to reduce temperature. Through fine-grained thermal characterization based on task behavior, dynamically determine Time-slice Scaling factor (TSF) for each task on real-time. Besides, combining alternative scheduling scheme based on boosting thermal model. Experimental results demonstrate our proposed policy can reduce the chip average and peak temperature maximums by 3.1 degrees C and 2 degrees C with negligible performance loss.

Abstract:SummaryHeterogeneous multiprocessor systems are now widely used in industry by providing high performance and high concurrency. However, with the increasing number of computational nodes, it leads to a dramatic increase in energy consumption of heterogeneous multiprocessor systems. Most of the current research has been conducted to reduce the energy consumption by reducing the processor frequency and extending the task execution time, but these measures often lead to a significant decrease in system reliability. This article addresses the problem of energy‐aware task scheduling in the case of distributed computing systems with deadline and reliability constraints. First, a time and reliability allocation model is built to assign the deadline and reliability constraints to each task, which ensures fairness among tasks. Then, a three‐stage scheduling algorithm is proposed to minimize the system energy consumption. The static energy consumption is minimized by shutting down the inefficient processors. The dynamic energy consumption of the system is reduced by distributing tasks as evenly as possible on each processor through a task redistribution strategy. Finally, experimental results on real scientific workflows and randomly generated graphs show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other algorithms in terms of energy reduction.

Abstract:3D IC technology drives Network-On-Chip (NoC) design on towards 3D trend and relevant multi-core system further development. Thermal issue becomes more critical because of the increasing power density caused by 3D stack. OS-level task scheduling is an effective method to improve on-chip temperature condition. In this paper we propose a thermal management method using task scheduling to limit chip temperature under required constraints as well as consider performance degradation caused by moving task to a core far away from its data. A temperature controller is implemented in our simulator to determine temperature management actions. The result shows our algorithm has lower performance loss with the same temperature constraint compared to coldest and random scheduling.

Abstract:This paper focuses the power-performance issues of running task set with interdependence on chip multiprocessor (CMP) systems. First, we propose a tri-dimensional coding based self-adaptive parallel (TCSP) genetic algorithm allocating the task set on processor cores to minimize the execution time. Next, we present a dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) procedure that alters the operating voltage by exploiting the slack time of tasks. The simulation experimental results demonstrate that our two-stage energy-aware schedule strategy can efficiently schedule the tasks on CMP systems while saving the system energy obviously.

Abstract:We study scheduling problems motivated by recently developed techniques for microprocessor thermal management at the operating systems level. The general scenario can be described as follows. The microprocessor's temperature is controlled by the hardware thermal management system that continuously monitors the chip temperature and automatically reduces the processor's speed as soon as the thermal threshold is exceeded. Some tasks are more CPU-intensive than other and thus generate more heat during execution. The cooling system operates non-stop, reducing (at an exponential rate) the deviation of the processor's temperature from the ambient temperature. As a result, the processor's temperature, and thus the performance as well, depends on the order of the task execution. Given a variety of possible underlying architectures, models for cooling and for hardware thermal management, as well as types of tasks, this scenario gives rise to a plethora of interesting and never studied scheduling problems. We focus on scheduling real-time jobs in a simplified model for cooling and thermal management. A collection of unit-length jobs is given, each job specified by its release time, deadline and heat contribution. If, at some time step, the temperature of the system is t and the processor executes a job with heat contribution h, then the temperature at the next step is (t+h)/2. The temperature cannot exceed the given thermal threshold T. The objective is to maximize the throughput, that is, the number of tasks that meet their deadlines. We prove that, in the offline case, computing the optimum schedule is NP-hard, even if all jobs are released at the same time. In the online case, we show a 2-competitive deterministic algorithm and a matching lower bound.

Abstract:The method of dynamic voltage scaling(DVS) is an efficient technology for saving energy.This paper put forwards a near-optimal strategy on multi-core processor using DVS.It changes the problem of voltage scaling to the problem of slack time allocation.It detects the slack time based on task structure firstly.Aiming at different kinds of slack times,it then uses relevant allocating method such as parallel compensate algorithm.Result of the experiment indicates that the strategy of this paper can decrease the energy consumption efficiently and has low complexity.

Abstract:We present an evaluation algorithm based on task division and scheduling at run-time on heterogeneous multi-core systems.The algorithm can achieve speedups of specific tasks running on different configurations for multi-core platform within the reconfigurable hardware architectures.We build a simulation environment and implement a prototype on FPGA.Experimental results show that the algorithm can achieve 90% of theoretical speedup with dependency of different tasks and 98.9% without data dependency.

Abstract:This paper presents a two-stage energy-aware schedule strategy to solve the problem of effective scheduling task set with interdependence on chip multiprocessor (CMP) system while saving energy. We propose a tri-dimensional coding based hybrid genetic algorithm (TCH) to allocate the task set on processor cores to minimize the execution time. Compared with traditional genetic algorithm, TCH uses the tri-dimensional coding scheme to match the architectural characteristics of CMP. We represent a heuristic algorithm using dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) method to reduce the system energy consumption. The simulation experimental results demonstrate that the strategy proposed in this paper efficiently allocates and schedules the tasks on CMP system.
