Abstract:This article intends to characterize triangular norms on a finite lattice. We first give a method for generating a triangular norm on an atomistic lattice by the values of atoms. Then we prove that every triangular norm on a non-Boolean atomistic lattice is not left-continuous and $T_M$ is the uniquely left-continuous triangular norm on an atomistic Boolean lattice. Furthermore, we show that each atomistic Boolean lattice can be represented by a family of triangular norms on an atomistic lattice with the same number of atoms. Finally, we construct a triangular norm on a finite lattice by restricting a triangular norm on an extended atomistic lattice of the finite lattice to the finite lattice.

Abstract:This article characterizes the associativity of two-place functions $T: [0,1]^2\rightarrow [0,1]$ defined by $T(x,y)=f^{(-1)}(F(f(x),f(y)))$ where $F:[0,1]^2\rightarrow[0,1]$ is a triangular norm (even a triangular subnorm), $f: [0,1]\rightarrow [0,1]$ is a strictly increasing function and $f^{(-1)}:[0,1]\rightarrow[0,1]$ is the pseudo-inverse of $f$. We prove that the associativity of functions $T$ only depends on the range of $f$, which is used to give a sufficient and necessary condition for the function $T$ being associative when the triangular norm $F$ is an ordinal sum of triangular norms and an ordinal sum of triangular subnorms in the sense of A. H. Clifford, respectively. These results finally are applied for describing classes of triangular norms generated by strictly increasing functions.

Abstract:<p>The ordinal sum construction provides a very effective way to generate a new triangular norm on the real unit interval from existing ones. One of the most prominent theorems concerning the ordinal sum of triangular norms on the real unit interval states that a triangular norm is continuous if and only if it is uniquely representable as an ordinal sum of continuous Archimedean triangular norms. However, the ordinal sum of triangular norms on subintervals of a bounded lattice is not always a triangular norm (even if only one summand is involved), if one just extends the ordinal sum construction to a bounded lattice in a naïve way. In the present paper, appropriately dealing with those elements that are incomparable with the endpoints of the given subintervals, we propose an alternative definition of ordinal sum of countably many (finite or countably infinite) triangular norms on subintervals of a complete lattice, where the endpoints of the subintervals constitute a chain. The completeness requirement for the lattice is not needed when considering finitely many triangular norms. The newly proposed ordinal sum is shown to be always a triangular norm. Several illustrative examples are given.</p>

Abstract:In this presented note, triangular norms are studied in the general setting of bounded partially ordered sets(posets). The sets of idempotent elements, zero divisors and nilpotent elements associated to a t-norm are introduced and related to each other. Abstract:We consider a (finite or infinite) family of closed convex sets with nonempty intersection in a normed space. A property relating their epigraphs with their intersection's epigraph is studied, and its relations to other constraint qualifications (such as the linear regularity, the strong CHIP, and Jameson's ($G$)-property) are established. With suitable continuity assumption we show how this property can be ensured from the corresponding property of some of its finite subfamilies.

Abstract:Geometric continuity bet-en parametric surfaces is an important issue in CAGD. So far researches have been concentrated on it for N-dimensional surfaces whose common boundary is of N-1 dimensions. No results haw ever been obtained for the case where the common boundary of the two surfaces is of L dimensions, 0 less-than-or-equal-to L less-than-or-equal-to N, or the two adjacent surfaces are of unequal dimenisions. In this paper, the conditions of high-order geometric continuity between parametric surfaces are studied for these general cases. By analysing the structure of G(n) transformations, general solutions as well as an iterative method for determining adjustable functions are proposed. Some equivalent conditions of G(n) continuity (nth order geometric continuity) are derived with an emphasis on conditions for triangular and rectangular Bezier surfaces. Since the G(n) conditions for polynomial parametric surfaces are expressed in the form of explicit relationship of control points of Bezier surfaces, they are wry useful both in theory and application for CAD/CAM and CAGD. Finally, G(n) conditions between q-dimensional submanifolds of N-dimensional and M-dimensional surfaces are studied, thus a complete theoretical basis is laid for the problem of geometric continuity.

Abstract:In this short note, we show that every convex, order bounded above functional on a Banach lattice is automatically norm continuous. This improves a result in \cite{RS06} and applies to many deviation and variability measures. We also show that an order-continuous, law-invariant functional on an Orlicz space is strongly consistent everywhere, extending a result in \cite{KSZ14}.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the deformation of the intersection of one compact set with a closed neighborhood of another compact set by changing the radius of this neighborhood. It is shown that in finite-dimensional normed spaces, in the case when both compact sets are non-empty convex subsets, such an operation is continuous in the topology generated by the Hausdorff metric. The question of the continuous dependence of the described intersection on the radius of the neighborhood arose as a by-product of the development of the theory of extremal networks. However, it turned out to be interesting in itself, suggesting various generalizations. Therefore, it was decided to publish it separately.

Abstract:Let $\Omega\subset\mathbb R^2$ be a chord arc domain. We give a simple proof of the the following fact, which is commonly known to be true: a nontrivial harmonic function which vanishes continuously on a relatively open set of the boundary cannot have the norm of the gradient which vanishes on a subset of positive surface measure (arc length). This result is conjectured to be true in higher dimensions by Lin, in Lipschitz domains. Let now $\Omega\subset\mathbb R^2$ be a $C^1$ domain with Dini mean oscillations. We prove that a nontrivial harmonic function which vanishes continuously on a relatively open subset of the boundary $\partial\Omega\cap B_1$ has a finite number of critical points in $\overline\Omega\cap B_{1/2}$. The latter improves some recent results by Kenig and Zhao. Our technique involves a conformal mapping which moves the boundary where the harmonic function vanishes into an interior nodal line of a new harmonic function, after a further reflection. Then, size estimates of the critical set - up to the boundary - of the original harmonic function can be understood in terms of estimates of the \emph{interior} critical set of the new harmonic function and of the critical set - up to the boundary - of the conformal mapping.

Abstract:The frequency-dependent attenuation typically obeys an empirical power law with an exponent ranging from 0 to 2. The standard time-domain partial differential equation models can describe merely two extreme cases of frequency independent and frequency-squared dependent attenuations. The otherwise non-zeor and non-square frequency dependency occuring in many cases of practical interest is thus often called the anomalous attenuation. In this study, we developed a linear integro-differential equation wave model for the anomalous attenuation by using the space fractional Laplacian operation, and the strategy is then extended to the nonlinear Burgers, KZK, and Westervelt equations. A new definition of the fractional Laplacian is also introduced which naturally includes the boundary conditions and has inherent regularization to ease the hyper-singularity in the conventional fractional Laplacian. Under the Szabo's smallness approximation where attenuation is assumed to be much smaller than the wave number, our linear model is found consistent with arbitrary frequency dependencies. According to the fact that the physical attenuation can be understood a statistic process, the empirical range [0,2] of the power law exponent is explained via the Levy stable distribution theory. It is noted that the power law attentuation underlies fractal microstructures of anomalously attenuative media.

A note on continuous functions on metric spaces

Abstract:Continuous functions on the unit interval are relatively tame from the logical and computational point of view. A similar behaviour is exhibited by continuous functions on compact metric spaces equipped with a countable dense subset. It is then a natural question what happens if we omit the latter 'extra data', i.e. work with 'unrepresented' compact metric spaces. In this paper, we study basic third-order statements about continuous functions on such unrepresented compact metric spaces in Kohlenbach's higher-order Reverse Mathematics. We establish that some (very specific) statements are classified in the (second-order) Big Five of Reverse Mathematics, while most variations/generalisations are not provable from the latter, and much stronger systems. Thus, continuous functions on unrepresented metric spaces are 'wild', though 'more tame' than (slightly) discontinuous functions on the reals.

Abstract:We show that if $X$ is an arc-like continuum, then for every point $x \in X$ there is a plane embedding of $X$ in which $x$ is an accessible point. This answers a question posed by Nadler in 1972, which has become known as the Nadler-Quinn problem in continuum theory. Towards this end, we develop the theories of truncations and contour factorizations of interval maps. As a corollary, we answer a question of Mayer from 1982 about inequivalent plane embeddings of indecomposable arc-like continua.

Abstract:Let $H^{\infty}$ be the Banach algebra of bounded analytic functions on the unit open disc $\mathbb{D}$ equipped with the supremum norm. As well known, inner functions play an important role of in the study of bounded analytic functions. In this paper, we are interested in the study of inner functions. Following by the canonical inner-outer factorization decomposition, define $Q_{inn}$ and $Q_{out}$ the maps from $H^{\infty}$ to $\mathfrak{I}$ the set of inner functions and $\mathfrak{F}$ the set of outer functions, respectively. In this paper, we study the $H^{2}$-norm continuity and $H^{\infty}$-norm discontinuity of $Q_{inn}$ and $Q_{out}$ on some subsets of $H^{\infty}$. On the other hand, the Beurling theorem connects invariant subspaces of the multiplication operator $M_z$ and inner functions. We show the nonexistence of continuous cross section from some certain invariant subspaces to inner functions in the supremum norm. The continuity problem of $Q_{inn}$ and $Q_{out}$ on $\textrm{Hol}(\overline{\mathbb{D}})$, the set of all analytic functions in the closed unit disk, are also considered.
