Abstract:Let (X, tau(1)) and (Y, tau(2)) be two Hausdorff locally convex spaces with continuous duals X, and Y', respectively, L (X, Y) be the space of all continuous linear operators from X into Y, K (X, Y) be the space of all compact operators of L (X, Y). Let WOT and UOT be the weak operator topology and uniform operator topology on K (X, Y), respectively. In this paper, we characterize a full-invariant property of K (X, Y); that is, if the sequence space X has the signed-weak gliding hump property, then each; lambda-multiplier WOT-convergent series Sigma(i) T-i in K(X, Y) must be X-multiplier convergent with respect to all topologies between WOT and UOT if and only if each continuous linear operator T: (X, tau(1)) --> or (lambda(beta), sigma(lambda(beta),lambda)) is compact. Abstract:In this paper, we obtain a concise characterization of norm continuity for t > 0 of propagators for the complete second order abstract differential equation on a Banach space E,u "(t) + Bu'(t) + Au(t) = 0, t greater than or equal to 0,where B is an element of L(E). As a consequence, we discover that a strongly continuous cosine operator function or operator group is norm continuous for t > 0 if and only if its generator is bounded. We show $ |||f(A) + f(B)||| \geq |||f(A + B)|||$ for any non-negative operator monotone function f(t) on $[0,\infty)$, and $ |||g(A) + g(B)||| \leq |||g(A + B)||| $ for non-negative increasing function g(t) on $[0,\infty)$ with g(0) = 0 and $g(\infty) = \infty$, whose inverse function is operator monotone.

Abstract:It is proved that the infinitesimal generator A of a strongly continuous semigroup of Linear operators on a Hilbert space also generates a strongly continuous group if and only if the resolvent of -A, (lambda + A)(-1), is also a bounded function on some right-hand-side half plane of complex numbers, and converges strongly to zero as the real part of lambda tends to infinity. An application to a partial differential equation is given.

Abstract:A system of linear equations $L$ is said to be norming if a natural functional $t_L(\cdot)$ giving a weighted count for the set of solutions to the system can be used to define a norm on the space of real-valued functions on $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ for every $n>0$. For example, Gowers uniformity norms arise in this way. In this paper, we initiate the systematic study of norming linear systems by proving a range of necessary and sufficient conditions for a system to be norming. Some highlights include an isomorphism theorem for the functional $t_L(\cdot)$, a proof that any norming system must be variable-transitive and the classification of all norming systems of rank at most two.

Abstract:Let ∥·∥ be a unitarily invariant norm on matrices. For matrices A,B,X with A,B positive semidefinite and X arbitrary, we prove that the function t↦∥|AtXB1−t|r∥·∥|A1−tXBt|r∥ is convex on [0,1] for each r>0. This convexity result interpolates the matrix Cauchy–Schwarz inequality ∥|A1/2XB1/2|r∥2⩽∥|AX|r∥·∥|XB|r∥ due to R. Bhatia and C. Davis [Linear Algebra Appl. 223/224 (1995) 119], and also it generalizes A.W. Marshall and I. Olkin's [Pacific J. Math. 15 (1965) 241] result that the condition number ∥As∥·∥A−s∥ is increasing in s>0. We prove that if f(t) is a nonnegative operator monotone function on [0,∞) and ∥·∥ is a normalized unitarily invariant norm, then f(∥X∥)⩽∥f(|X|)∥ for every matrix X. The special case when f(t)=tr (0<r⩽1) is used to consider the monotonicity of p↦∥Ap+Bp∥1/p as well as p↦∥(Ap+Bp)1/p∥. Furthermore, we obtain some norm inequalities of Hölder and Minkowski types related to the expression ∥|A|p+|B|p∥1/p. For example, comparisons are made between ∥C*A+D*B∥ and ∥|A|p+|B|p∥1/p·∥|C|q+|D|q∥1/q, where p−1+q−1=1.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new method for constructing non-continuous t-norms from a given t-norm. Using this method, we construct a family of conditionally cancellative left-continuous t-norms which are not continuous. Thus we answer an open question which is collected by Klement et al. [Problems on triangular norms and related operators, Fuzzy Sets and Systems 145 (2004) 471–479].

Abstract:In this paper, we are interested in studying the set $\mathcal{A}_{\|\cdot\|}(X, Y)$ of all norm-attaining operators $T$ from $X$ into $Y$ satisfying the following: given $\epsilon>0$, there exists $\eta$ such that if $\|Tx\| > 1 - \eta$, then there is $x_0$ such that $\| x_0 - x\| < \epsilon$ and $T$ itself attains its norm at $x_0$. We show that every norm one functional on $c_0$ which attains its norm belongs to $\mathcal{A}_{\|\cdot\|}(c_0, \mathbb{K})$. Also, we prove that the analogous result holds neither for $\mathcal{A}_{\|\cdot\|}(\ell_1, \mathbb{K})$ nor $\mathcal{A}_{\|\cdot\|}(\ell_{\infty}, \mathbb{K})$. Under some assumptions, we show that the sphere of the compact operators belongs to $\mathcal{A}_{\|\cdot\|}(X, Y)$ and that this is no longer true when some of these hypotheses are dropped. The analogous set $\mathcal{A}_{nu}(X)$ for numerical radius of an operator instead of its norm is also defined and studied. We present a complete characterization for the diagonal operators which belong to the sets $\mathcal{A}_{\| \cdot \|}(X, X)$ and $\mathcal{A}_{nu}(X)$ when $X=c_0$ or $\ell_p$. As a consequence, we get that the canonical projections $P_N$ on these spaces belong to our sets. We give examples of operators on infinite dimensional Banach spaces which belong to $\mathcal{A}_{\| \cdot \|}(X, X)$ but not to $\mathcal{A}_{nu}(X)$ and vice-versa. Finally, we establish some techniques which allow us to connect both sets by using direct sums.

Abstract:Abstract Let be a subset of a Hilbert space. We prove that if is such that for all and all non‐negative that add up to one, then for any 1‐Lipschitz , with , there exists a 1‐Lipschitz extension of such that the uniform distance on between and is the same as the uniform distance on between and . Moreover, if either or is convex, we prove the converse: We show that a map that allows for a 1‐Lipschitz, uniform distance preserving extension of any 1‐Lipschitz map on a subset of also satisfies the above set of inequalities. We also prove a similar continuity result concerning extensions of monotone maps. Our results hold true also for maps taking values in infinite‐dimensional spaces.

Abstract:The duality maps play a crucial role in solving nonlinear problems in the setting of Banach spaces, due to the lack of an inner product on Banach spaces. Weak continuity of duality maps is required occasionally, and even weak continuity of the normalized duality is assumed by some authors. We will show that weak continuity of the normalized duality in infinite-dimensional spaces is an inappropriate assumption as the normalized duality map of the sequential space l(p) for 1 < p < infinity fails to be weakly continuous unless p = 2. Consequently, assuming weak continuity of a generalized duality map is more appropriate in dealing with nonlinear problems in Banach spaces.

Abstract:Given a family of self-adjoint operators (At)t∈T$${(A_t)_{t \in T}}$$ indexed by a parameter t in some topological space T, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the spectrum σ(At)$${\sigma(A_t)}$$ to be Vietoris continuous with respect to t. Equivalently the boundaries and the gap edges are continuous in t. If (T, d) is a complete metric space with metric d, these conditions are extended to guarantee Hölder continuity of the spectral boundaries and of the spectral gap edges. As a corollary, an upper bound is provided for the size of closing gaps.
