Abstract:Laser propulsion(LP) is perhaps one of the most realistic advanced propulsion concepts and an effective alternative to conventional rocket launching techniques.A laser is used in laser propulsion as a remote energy source for propulsion.The thrust is produced by high energy exhaust stream caused by laser-induced vaporization of material.More and more scholars have been showing a great interest in laser propulsion for its high specific impulse,low cost,high reliability,etc.The studies on laser propulsion have been carried out in USA,Japan,Germany,Russia,etc.Laser propulsion has a wide application in the field of micro-satellite launch into LEO,attitude and orbit control,and etc.The study programs of laser propulsion in recent years have been summarized with the discussions of its future development trend.This review may provide a guide for further study of laser propulsion.

Abstract:More and more researchers have been showing great interest in laser propulsion for its outstanding merits,such as high specific impulse,low cost,etc. Laser propulsion research programs and their development history abroad have been introduced briefly. The latest progress of laser propulsion researches is summarized. Degree of maturation of related technologies is analyzed,such as laser,transmission control system,thermodynamic protection of nozzle,etc. The development trend of laser propulsion is discussed. The application prospect of laser propulsion is presented. The key problems that should be urgently sloved are pointed out such as the indepth study on operation mechanism of laser propulsion.

Abstract:Pulse laser propulsion (PLP) is an advanced propulsion concept can be used across a variety of fields with a wide range of applications. PLP reflects superior payload as well as decreased launch costs in comparison with other conventional methods of producing thrust, such as chemical propulsion or electric propulsion. Numerous researchers have attempted to exploit the potential applications of PLP. This paper first reviews concepts relevant to PLP, including the propulsion modes, breakdown regimes, and propulsion efficiency; the propulsion targets for different materials with the pulse laser are then discussed in detail, including the propulsion of solid and liquid microspheres. PLP applications such as the driven microsatellite, target surface particle removal, and orbital debris removal are also discussed. Although the PLP has been applied to a variety of fields, further research is yet warranted to establish its application in the aerospace field. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The main research results in recent ten years of laser propulsion with liquid propellants are summarized internally and internationally. The general mechanism of laser propulsion with liquid propellants is analyzed. And the splashing is concluded as the most important constraint of the performance of liquid propellants. Changing the geometries of propellants and increasing the viscosity of liquid are presented as two effective ways to improve propulsive performance. And the performance characteristics of liquid volume, thin film, droplet and highly viscous propellants are commented successively based on the different ways. The hexane film, water droplet and highly viscous solutions are concluded as three kinds of liquid propellants with better integrated propulsive performance. Finally the compound propellant is pointed out to be one of the most important future directions of laser propulsion with liquid propellants.

Abstract:Interest in laser plasma propulsion is growing intensively. The interaction of high intensity short laser pulses with materials can produce plasma expansion with a velocity of hundreds of km/s. The specific impulse of ablative laser porpulsion can be many tens of times greater than that of chemical rockets. The development and potential application of laser plasma propuslsion are discussed.

Of all the laser propulsion technologies, laser thruster technology is an important technology, and it is also a vital one. Based on a thoroughly research on the home and foreign literatures, the status and development trend of concept studies on laser propulsion thrusters is summarized. The advantages and disadvantages of the thrusters are pointed out.

Abstract:For future laser propulsion missions in space, the choice of propellant will be critical for designing appropriate mission parameters. Recent research on liquid propellants for laser propulsion has been intensive and international in scope. The achievements in the study on the propulsive characteristics of liquid propellants were commented. The outstanding un-solved problems were pointed out with the suggestion of using minor sized water droplets as propellants. Study results indicate that atomized water droplets and liquid films have good propulsive characteristics.

Abstract:Laser propulsion is a new concept technique of propulsion and will have important application in future space technology. In this paper, the analytic formulas for the impulse and momentum coupling coefficient based on point explosion theory have been derived by considering the restraint of the reflector. In the numerical study, a new method that combining the self-similarity solution for point-explosion at the first stage and the high resolution PPM mesh at the second stage, has been applied to calculate the high-temperature plasma flow field generated by the focused laser beam. The simulated results show that the efficiency of laser propulsion, such as thrust, total impulse, momentum coupling coefficient etc are strongly related to the geometry of the reflector and the power of the input laser beam.

Abstract:Transmitted laser propulsion in confined geometry using liquid propellant is proposed in this paper. The experimental results show that the coupling coefficient obtained by using carbonic ink is much higher than that using pure water due to the low breakdown threshold and high absorption. The influences of the focal condition and the mass of the liquid jet on the coupling coefficient are studied. The maxima of the coupling coefficient and the specific impulse obtained in the experiment are 1785.8 dyne/W and 19.3 s, respectively. The energy conversion efficiency is measured to be more than 50%.

Abstract:In laser plasma propulsion, laser interaction with multilayer target is investigated. The first layer of the target of fluid water, rigid glass, flexible polyimide as well as polyimide are tested It is found that the coupling coefficient of water confinement is higher and it is enhanced two orders compared with direct ablation. Through calculation the ablation pressure, higher coupling coefficient is attribute to the plasma confinement and impedance mismatch. Furthermore, the images of the polymers after ablation are observed.

Abstract:Micro laser propulsion used for some space tasks of micro-satellites are preferred to providing small thrust and high specific impulse while keeping power consumption low. Most previous work on micro laser propulsion are about transmission mode (T-mode) using a CW laser. In this article, a pulsed fiber laser is used to study the micro laser propulsion performance under reflection mode. Multi pulse (ranged from 100 to 2000) tests are conducted on a double base propellant with the vacuum less than 10 Pa. The laser frequency is 20 kHz and two kinds of instantaneous power density 4.77x10(6) W/cm(2) and 2.39x10(7) W/cm(2) are used. It is found that the momentum coupling coefficient C-m and the mean thrust F increases with the increasing pulse numbers, which is different to the previous work. By adjusting the irradiation time T, it is easy to get a large mean thrust, up to mN. When the energy density is the same, C-m, I-sp, F and eta increase with the increasing power density. Also I-sp and eta are very low, laser ablation is insufficiently under the current condition. 3D Morphology of the ablation hole is obtained by confocal microscope for the first time.

Abstract:Microwave propelled sails are a new class of spacecraft using photon acceleration. It is the only method of interstellar flight that has no physics issues. Laboratory demonstrations of basic features of beam-driven propulsion, flight, stability ('beam-riding'), and induced spin, have been completed in the last decade, primarily in the microwave. It offers much lower cost probes after a substantial investment in the launcher. Engineering issues are being addressed by other applications: fusion (microwave, millimeter and laser sources) and astronomy (large aperture antennas). There are many candidate sail materials: carbon nanotubes and microtrusses, graphene, beryllium, etc. For acceleration of a sail, what is the cost-optimum high power system? Here the cost is used to constrain design parameters to estimate system power, aperture and elements of capital and operating cost. From general relations for cost-optimal transmitter aperture and power, system cost scales with kinetic energy and inversely with sail diameter and frequency. So optimal sails will be larger, lower in mass and driven by higher frequency beams. Estimated costs include economies of scale. We present several starship point concepts. Systems based on microwave, millimeter wave and laser technologies are of equal cost at today's costs. The frequency advantage of lasers is cancelled by the high cost of both the laser and the radiating optic.

Abstract:More and more scholars have shown great interests in liquid and solid propellants.The current research results show the high momentum coupling coefficient of liquids and the high specific impulse of solids.However,the internal efficiency of condensed propellants was relatively low.The ideal thermodynamic cycle of laser propulsion process was given as a comparison to chemistry rocket.There were no advantages in the field of internal efficiency of laser propulsion compared to chemistry rocket.The effects of dopants,energetic materials,liquid films on the ideal thermodynamic cycle of laser propulsion were analyzed.It is suggested to choose the liquid film,energetic materials and doped matters as propellants for laser propulsion so as to increase the specific impulse and coupling coefficient synchronously.This work may be helpful in the choice of condensed propellants for the future tasks of laser propulsion.

Abstract:For decades, the dream of unfettered space travel, free from the constraints of traditional chemical rockets, has captivated humanity's imagination. The realization of an interstellar faring civilization hinges on breakthroughs in space propulsion that transcend the limitations imposed by current chemical rocket technology. Scientists explore the intriguing realm of propellantless propulsion, a futuristic vision for space exploration that transcends the limitations of conventional propulsion. The article explores the historical roots of this field, including controversial concepts like the EmDrive and the Biefeld-Brown effect. It further examines theoretical frameworks encompassing asymmetric electrostatic pressure generation and even spacetime warping. However, the quest for reactionless motion faces a fundamental hurdle – the law of conservation of momentum. Efforts to circumvent this law involve manipulating the enigmatic quantum vacuum or creating asymmetric thrust generation within the spacecraft itself. While challenges like precise microthrust measurement, immense energy demands and material limitations persist, the potential rewards are truly transformative. Interplanetary voyages completed in significantly shorter timeframes and drastically reduced launch costs could be attained. Propellantless drives hold the potential to overcome numerous obstacles that current chemical propulsion cannot. This article underscores the critical need for continued exploration through rigorous experimental verification, the development of robust theoretical frameworks and collaborative efforts between physicists, engineers and materials scientists. This continued exploration necessitates the exploitation of existing high-efficiency solar collection technologies. Furthermore, investigations into innovative approaches, such as those utilizing metamaterials, could be pivotal in unlocking the transformative potential of propellantless propulsion systems.
