Abstract:As the transistor’s feature scales down and the integration density of the monolithic circuit increases continuously,the traditional metal interconnects face significant performance limitation to meet the stringent demands of high-speed,low-power and low-latency data transmission for on-and off-chip communications.Optical technology is poised to resolve these problems.Due to the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor（CMOS） compatible process,silicon photonics is the leading candidate technology.Silicon photonic devices and networks have been improved dramatically in recent years,with a notable increase in bandwidth from the megahertz to the multi-gigahertz regime in just over half a decade.This paper reviews the recent developments in silicon photonics for optical interconnects and summarizes the work of our laboratory in this research field.

Abstract:Silicon photonic devices based on complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) compatible technologies have shown attractive performances on very-large-scale monolithic optoelectronic integration, high speed modulation and switching, and efficient off-chip optical coupling. This paper presents the recent progress on fast silicon optical modulation, wavelength-insensitive optical switching and efficient optical coupling techniques in our group. Several CMOS-compatible silicon optical couplers with different structures have been developed, showing the highest coupling efficiency of 65%. Broadband silicon-based optical switches with sub-nanosecond switching on-off time are experimentally realized. Silicon modulators with novel PN junctions are demonstrated with the speed up to 50 Gb s −1 .

Abstract:Silicon photonics is an emerging technology offering novel solutions in different areas requiring highly integrated communication systems for optical networking, sensing, bio-applications and computer interconnects. Silicon photonics-based communication has many advantages over electric wires for multiprocessor and multicore macro-chip architectures including high bandwidth data transmission, high speed and low power consumption. Following the INTEL's concept to "siliconize" photonics, silicon device technologies should be able to solve the fabrication problems for six main building blocks for realization of optical interconnects: light generation, guiding of light including wavelength selectivity, light modulation for signal encoding, detection, low cost assembly including optical connecting of the devices to the real world and finally the electronic control systems.

Abstract:Silicon photonics has developed rapidly in recent years, which has received widespread attention due to the fact that it can overcome the bandwidth bottleneck in optical communications. This paper mainly introduces the key applications of silicon photonics in the field of communication. Through a detailed description of optical transceiver modules in the coherent optical communication and data center, the advantages of silicon optical technology in the field of communication are introduced, such as high speed, low power consumption, high bandwidth and cost-effective. The problems of fabrication, packaging, light source integration and related devices in the current applications of silicon photonics are briefly analyzed. In the future, silicon photonics technology is expected to have better application prospects in long-distance transmission, big data communication and other communication applications. Abstract:With high integration density and excellent optical properties,silicon photonics is becoming a promising platform for complete integration and large-scale optical quantum information processing.Scalable quantum information applications need photon generation and detection to be integrated on the same chip,and we have seen that various devices on the silicon photonic chip have been developed for this goal.This paper reviews the relevant research results and state-of-the-art technologies on the silicon photonic chip for scalable quantum ap-plications.Despite the shortcomings,the properties of some components have already met the requirements for further expansion.Furthermore,we point out the challenges ahead and future research directions for on-chip scalable quantum information applications.

Abstract:With the increasing bandwidth requirement in computing and signal processing, the inherent limitations in metallic interconnection are seriously threatening the future of traditional IC industry. Silicon photonics can provide a low-cost approach to overcome the bottleneck of the high data rate transmission by replacing the original electronic integrated circuits with photonic integrated circuits. Although the commercial promise has not been realized, this perspective gives huge impetus to the development of silicon photonics these years. This paper provides an overview of the progress and the state of the art of each component in silicon photonics, including waveguides, filters, modulators, detectors, and lasers, mainly in the last five years.
Silicon-based CMOS Photonic Devices Using Carrier Dispersion Effect

Abstract:In order to realize the practical application of the Silicon-based optoelectronic devices, the progress and characteristics of Silicon-based CMOS photonic devices using carrier dispersion effect with structures of P-I-N, Bipolar Mode Field Effect Transistor(BMFET), Metal Oxide Semiconductor(MOS) and PN junction are reviewed. And our work in design and fabrication of Silicon-based CMOS photonic devices is reported. The devices fabricated by commercial CMOS process have expected results. The extinction ratios of an optical modulator, a 1 × 2 optical switch and a ring resonator are about 18 dB, 21 dB and 8~12 dB, respectively. The introduction of CMOS technology to the design and fabrication of Silicon-based photonic devices will make integrated optics be on a new level.

Abstract:Optical interconnection using photons as information carriers is one of the trends in silicon integrated circuits. However, the realization of silicon-based optical interconnection must be dependent of efficient silicon-based light sources that are compatible with current IC manufacturing processes. In this paper, our research results of silicon-based light sources in recent years are summarized with special emphasis on the latest progress in silicon-based luminescent materials and devices, including silicon quantum dots, silicon crystal defects, silicon-based nitrogen oxide films and silicon-based oxide semiconductor films.

Abstract:The emergence of silicon photonics over the past two decades has established silicon as a preferred substrate platform for photonic integration. While most silicon-based photonic components have so far been realized in the near-infrared (near-IR) telecommunication bands, the mid-infrared (mid-IR, 2–20-μm wavelength) band presents a significant growth opportunity for integrated photonics. In this review, we offer our perspective on the burgeoning field of mid-IR integrated photonics on silicon. A comprehensive survey on the state-of-the-art of key photonic devices such as waveguides, light sources, modulators, and detectors is presented. Furthermore, on-chip spectroscopic chemical sensing is quantitatively analyzed as an example of mid-IR photonic system integration based on these basic building blocks, and the constituent component choices are discussed and contrasted in the context of system performance and integration technologies.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrated recent progress on Si based optical components for advanced optical communication systems. The polarization beam splitter with extinction ratio of more than 20dB and the optical 90° hybrid having phase deviation within ±5° were obtained using MMI structures. The 12Gb/s modulators and the 20GHz photodetectors were measured. Benefiting from the unique properties of silicon modulator, an error-free 80Km transmission of the signals generated by our silicon carrier-depletion Mach-Zehnder modulator was also demonstrated at 10Gb/s and the power penalty was as low as 1.15dB. These results show that silicon photonics has a great potential in advanced optical communication systems.

Abstract:Due to its prominent advantages such as complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) compatibility and high integration, silicon photonics technology is recognized as the most promising new generation of mainstream photonic integration technologies and has thus attracted great attention worldwide. On the one hand , great progress has been made in the research field of passive/active silicon photonic devices and integrated circuits in recent years. Silicon photonics technology has ushered in a broader space for application owing to the rapid development of emerging fields, such as optical communication, optical interconnection, optical sensing, optical measurement, and optical computing. On the other hand, silicon photonic devices and circuits are also exposed to various challenges as they are desired to achieve better performance, higher density, and larger scale. This paper focuses on high-performance passive silicon photonic waveguide devices for wavelength division multiplexing, polarization multiplexing, mode multiplexing as well as hybrid multiplexing. particularly on their performance breakthrough and function expansion. Finally, the prospects of silicon photonic waveguide devices are discussed and presented.

Abstract:Silicon photonics has become one of the major technologies in this very information age. It has been intensively pursued by researchers and entrepreneurs all over the world in recent years. Achieving the large scale silicon photonic integration, particularly monolithic integration, is the final goal so that high density data communication will become much cheaper, more reliable, and less energy consuming. Comparing with the developed countries, China may need to invest more to develop top down nanoscale integration capability (more on processing technology) to sustain the development in silicon photonics and to elevate its own industry structure.

Abstract:Quantum technology is poised to enable a step change in human capability for computing, communications and sensing. Photons are indispensable as carriers of quantum information-they travel at the fastest possible speed and readily protected from decoherence. However, the system requires thousands of near-transparent components with ultra-low-latency control. To be implemented, a new paradigm photonic system is required: one with in-built coherence, stability, the ability to define arbitrary circuits, and a path to manufacturability. Silicon photonics has unparalleled density and component performance, which, with CMOS compatible fabrication, place it in a strong position for a scalable quantum photonics platform. This paper is a progress report on silicon quantum photonics, focused on developments in the past five years. We provide an introduction on silicon quantum photonic component and the challenges in the field, summarise the current state-of-the-art and identify outstanding technical challenges, as well as promising avenues of future research. We also resolve a conflict in the definition of Hong-Ou-Mandel interference visibility in integrated quantum photonic experiments, needed for fair comparison of photon quality across different platforms. Our aim is the development of scalability on the platform, to which end we point the way to ever-closer integration, toward silicon quantum photonic systems-on-a-chip.

Abstract:“Capacity Crunch”in NIR field needs to be forestalled since the pressure of information transmission，processing and storage is continually growing.Silicon photonics，with compatibility of CMOS，compact structure and low fabrication cost，shows its superiority in the field of mid-IR transmission and signal processing.Thus a lead forward is excepted to be realized in large-scale integration of mid-IR devices and nonlinear optical and other field.The strengths and challenge of silicon photonics in mid-IR application were estimated firstly.Then some“building block”components of silicon photonics in mid-IR（waveguides，beam splitter/combiner，diode，etc）were introduced.Achievements of devices （nonlinear optical devices based on FWM，frequency comb in sensing field and laser，modulator，detector in communication field）within the last five years were presented.Finally，the conclusion was made for recent research progress.

Abstract:During the past two decades, there have been great interests in developing ways to manip‐ ulate photons at nanoscale, realizing optical integrations, developing smaller, faster, and more efficient optoelectronic devices for the purpose of next-generation optoelectronic technology. Great progresses have been made in exploring photonic crystals (PCs) [1,2], plasmonic structures [3,4], and other nanophotonic devices for applications. However, plasmonic structures always involve some metal cells and are subject to strong energy dissipation and absorption loss in optical frequencies. Since silicon has a large refraction index and low loss in the infrared wavelength, it becomes an important optical material that has been widely used for integrated photonics applications. Meanwhile, silicon dominates microelectronics and this makes the silicon-based optical devices have the advantage to integrate with electronic devices.
