Abstract:A generalized Chinese remainder theorem (CRT) for multiple integers from residue sets has been studied recently, where the correspondence between the remainders and the integers in each residue set modulo several moduli is not known. A robust CRT has also been proposed lately to robustly reconstruct a single integer from its erroneous remainders. In this paper, we consider the reconstruction problem of two integers from their residue sets, where the remainders not only are out of order but also may have errors. We prove that two integers can be robustly reconstructed if their remainder errors are less than $M/8$ , where $M$ is the greatest common divisor of all the moduli. We also propose an efficient reconstruction algorithm. Finally, we present some simulations to verify the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. This paper is motivated from and has applications in the determination of multiple frequencies from multiple undersampled waveforms.

Abstract:The problem of robustly reconstructing a large number from its erroneous remainders with respect to several moduli, namely the robust remaindering problem, may occur in many applications including phase unwrapping, frequency detection from several undersampled waveforms, wireless sensor networks, etc. Assuming that the dynamic range of the large number is the maximal possible one, i.e., the least common multiple (lcm) of all the moduli, a method called robust Chinese remainder theorem for solving the robust remaindering problem has been recently proposed. In this paper, by relaxing the assumption that the dynamic range is fixed to be the lcm of all the moduli, a tradeoff between the dynamic range and the robustness bound for two-modular systems is studied. It basically says that a decrease in the dynamic range may lead to an increase of the robustness bound. We first obtain a general condition on the remainder errors and derive the exact dynamic range with a closed-form formula for the robustness to hold. We then propose simple closed-form reconstruction algorithms. Furthermore, the newly obtained two-modular results are applied to the robust reconstruction for multimodular systems and generalized to real numbers. Finally, some simulations are carried out to verify our proposed theoretical results.

Abstract:Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT) has been widely studied with its applications in frequency estimation, phase unwrapping, coding theory and distributed data storage. Since traditional CRT is greatly sensitive to the errors in residues due to noises, the problem of robustly reconstructing integers via the erroneous residues has been intensively studied in the literature. In order to robustly reconstruct integers, there are two kinds of traditional methods: the one is to introduce common divisors in the moduli and the other is to directly decrease the dynamic range. In this paper, we take further insight into the geometry property of the linear space associated with CRT. Echoing both ways to introduce redundancy, we propose a pseudo metric to analyze the trade-off between the error bound and the dynamic range for robust CRT in general. Furthermore, we present the first robust CRT for multiple numbers to solve the problem of the CRT-based undersampling frequency estimation in general cases. Based on symmetric polynomials, we proved that in most cases, the problem can be solved in polynomial time efficiently. The work in this paper is towards a complete theoretical solution to the open problem over 20 years.

Abstract:Estimation of multiple common remainders from a sequence of erroneous residue sets is an important step for the robust generalized Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT). This paper considers the problem of how to estimate the two common remainders from their residue sets modulo a set of moduli. To measure the errors properly under the modular operation, we introduce two type circular distances. Based on these circular distances, two estimation methods are proposed by properly grouping the erroneous remainders into two ordered clusters. Both of the two methods perform better with lower computational complexities than the existing methods. In this paper, theoretical analysis as well as analytical results for the two proposed methods are obtained. For the first method, the two optimal estimates are proved to be in a finite set with no more than L candidates, where L is the number of the given moduli. The second method have closed forms. Simulation results show that the two proposed methods have nearly the same performance. These optimal estimates can improve the performance of the robust generalized CRT significantly.

Abstract:It is well-known that the traditional Chinese remainder theorem (CRT) is not robust in the sense that a small error in a remainder may cause a large reconstruction error. A robust CRT was recently proposed for a special case when the greatest common divisor (gcd) of all the moduli is more than 1 and the remaining integers factorized by the gcd are co-prime. It basically says that the reconstruction error is upper bounded by the remainder error level tau if tau is smaller than a quarter of the gcd of all the moduli. In this paper, we consider the robust reconstruction problem for a general set of moduli. We first present a necessary and sufficient condition on the remainder errors with a general set of moduli and also a corresponding robust reconstruction method. This can be thought of as a single-stage robust CRT. We then propose a two-stage robust CRT by grouping the moduli into several groups as follows. First, the single-stage robust CRT is applied to each group. Then, with these robust reconstructions from all the groups, the single-stage robust CRT is applied again across the groups. This is easily generalized to multi-stage robust CRT. With this two-stage robust CRT, the robust reconstruction holds even when the remainder error level tau is above the quarter of the gcd of all the moduli, and an algorithm on how to group a set of moduli for a better reconstruction robustness is proposed in some special cases.

Abstract:The robust Chinese remainder theorem (CRT) has been recently proposed for robustly reconstructing a large nonnegative integer from erroneous remainders. It has found many applications in signal processing, including phase unwrapping and frequency estimation under sub-Nyquist sampling. Motivated by the applications in multidimensional (MD) signal processing, in this paper we propose the MD-CRT and robust MD-CRT for integer vectors. Specifically, by rephrasing the abstract CRT for rings in number-theoretic terms, we first derive the MD-CRT for integer vectors with respect to a general set of integer matrix moduli, which provides an algorithm to uniquely reconstruct an integer vector from its remainders, if it is in the fundamental parallelepiped of the lattice generated by a least common right multiple of all the moduli. For some special forms of moduli, we present explicit reconstruction formulae. Moreover, we derive the robust MD-CRT for integer vectors when the remaining integer matrices of all the moduli left divided by their greatest common left divisor (gcld) are pairwise commutative and coprime. Two different reconstruction algorithms are proposed, and accordingly, two different conditions on the remainder error bound for the reconstruction robustness are obtained, which are related to a quarter of the minimum distance of the lattice generated by the gcld of all the moduli or the Smith normal form of the gcld.

Abstract:A well-known generalisation of positional numeration systems is the case where the base is the residue class of $x$ modulo a given polynomial $f(x)$ with coefficients in (for example) the integers, and where we try to construct finite expansions for all residue classes modulo $f(x)$, using a suitably chosen digit set. We give precise conditions under which direct or fibred products of two such polynomial number systems are again of the same form. The main tool is a general form of the Chinese Remainder Theorem. We give applications to simultaneous number systems in the integers.

Abstract:Robust Chinese remainder theorem (CRT) has been recently investigated for both integers and real numbers, where the folding integers are accurately recovered from erroneous remainders. In this paper, we consider the CRT problem for real numbers with noisy remainders that follow wrapped Gaussian distributions. We propose the maximum-likelihood estimation (MLE) based CRT when the remainder noises may not necessarily have the same variances. Furthermore, we present a fast algorithm for the MLE based CRT algorithm that only needs to search for the solution among L elements, where L is the number of remainders. Then, a necessary and sufficient condition on the remainder errors for the MLE CRT to be robust is obtained, which is weaker than the existing result. Finally, we compare the performances of the newly proposed algorithm and the existing algorithm in terms of both theoretical analysis and numerical simulations. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm not only has a better performance especially when the remainders have different error levels/variances, but also has a much lower computational complexity.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider some hybrid Diophantine equations of addition and multiplication. We first improve a result on new Hilbert-Waring problem. Then we consider the equation \begin{equation} \begin{cases} A+B=C ABC=D^n \end{cases} \end{equation} where $A,B,C,D,n \in\ZZ_{+}$ and $n\geq3$, which may be regarded as a generalization of Fermat's equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$. When $\gcd(A,B,C)=1$, $(1)$ is equivalent to Fermat's equation, which means it has no positive integer solutions. We discuss several cases for $\gcd(A,B,C)=p^k$ where $p$ is an odd prime. In particular, for $k=1$ we prove that $(1)$ has no nonzero integer solutions when $n=3$ and we conjecture that it is also true for any prime $n>3$. Finally, we consider equation $(1)$ in quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{t})$ for $n=3$.

Abstract:Chinese remainder theorem (CRT) reconstructs an integer from its multiple remainders that is well-known not robust in the sense that a small error in a remainder may cause a large error in the reconstruction. A robust CRT has been recently proposed when all the moduli have a common factor and the robust CRT is a searching based algorithm and no closed-from is given. In this paper, a closed-form robust CRT is proposed and a necessary and sufficient condition on the remainder errors for the closed-form robust CRT to hold is obtained. Furthermore, its performance analysis is given. It is shown that the reason for the robustness is from the remainder differential process in both searching based and our proposed closed-form robust CRT algorithms, which does no exist in the traditional CRT. We also propose an improved version of the closed-form robust CRT. Finally, we compare the performances of the traditional CRT, the searching based robust CRT and our proposed closed-form robust CRT (and its improved version) algorithms in terms of both theoretical analysis and numerical simulations. The results demonstrate that the proposed closed-form robust CRT (its improved version has the best performance) has the same performance but much simpler form than the searching based robust CRT.

Abstract:The problem of robustly reconstructing an integer vector from its erroneous remainders appears in many applications in the field of multidimensional (MD) signal processing. To address this problem, a robust MD Chinese remainder theorem (CRT) was recently proposed for a special class of moduli, where the remaining integer matrices left-divided by a greatest common left divisor (gcld) of all the moduli are pairwise commutative and coprime. The strict constraint on the moduli limits the usefulness of the robust MD-CRT in practice. In this paper, we investigate the robust MD-CRT for a general set of moduli. We first introduce a necessary and sufficient condition on the difference between paired remainder errors, followed by a simple sufficient condition on the remainder error bound, for the robust MD-CRT for general moduli, where the conditions are associated with (the minimum distances of) these lattices generated by gcld's of paired moduli, and a closed-form reconstruction algorithm is presented. We then generalize the above results of the robust MD-CRT from integer vectors/matrices to real ones. Finally, we validate the robust MD-CRT for general moduli by employing numerical simulations, and apply it to MD sinusoidal frequency estimation based on multiple sub-Nyquist samplers.

Abstract:Generalized Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT) has been shown to be a powerful approach to solve the ambiguity resolution problem. However, with its close relationship to number theory, study in this area is mainly from a coding theory perspective under deterministic conditions. Nevertheless, it can be proved that even with the best deterministic condition known, the probability of success in robust reconstruction degrades exponentially as the number of estimand increases. In this paper, we present the first rigorous analysis on the underlying statistical model of CRT-based multiple parameter estimation, where a generalized Gaussian mixture with background knowledge on samplings is proposed. To address the problem, two novel approaches are introduced. One is to directly calculate the conditional maximal a posteriori probability (MAP) estimation of residue clustering, and the other is to iteratively search for MAP of both common residues and clustering. Moreover, remainder error-correcting codes are introduced to improve the robustness further. It is shown that this statistically based scheme achieves much stronger robustness compared to state-of-the-art deterministic schemes, especially in low and median Signal Noise Ratio (SNR) scenarios.

Abstract:Let $\chi$ be a primitive character modulo $q$, and let $\delta > 0$. Assuming that $\chi$ has large order $d$, for any $d$th root of unity $\alpha$ we obtain non-trivial upper bounds for the number of $n \leq x$ such that $\chi(n) = \alpha$, provided $x > q^{\delta}$. This improves upon a previous result of the first author by removing restrictions on $q$ and $d$. As a corollary, we deduce that if the largest prime factor of $d$ satisfies $P^+(d) \to \infty$ then the level set $\chi(n) = \alpha$ has $o(x)$ such solutions whenever $x > q^{\delta}$, for any fixed $\delta > 0$.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose two improved theorems for addressing generalized bivariate integer equations using the lattice-based method. We examine the application of these theorems to the problem of factoring general RSA (Rivest–Shamir–Adleman) moduli of the form where and are prime numbers. These moduli, which are commonly used in the RSA cryptosystem and its variants, have previously been subjected to attacks primarily through the solution of univariate modular equations. In contrast, we investigate the possibility of factoring using leaked most significant bits (MSBs) or least significant bits (LSBs) of the prime numbers by solving generalized bivariate integer equations. We determine the minimum amount of known bits required for implementing the proposed factoring attacks and establish a unifying attack strategy. Furthermore, our results are verified through numerical computer experiments.
