Abstract:Based on the density functional theory and evolutionary algorithms the thermodynamically stable structures of MnN and their stability P–T fields were revealed in the pressure range of 0–50 GPa. The MnN-F-43m polymorph (zincblende-type) was shown to be the ambient pressure phase, while experimentally known MnN-I4/mmm (distorted NaCl-type) is a high-temperature phase quenchable to the ambient condition. At 5.0 GPa and below 500 K the MnN-F-43m transforms into NiAs-type structure, MnN-P63/mmc. With temperature increase, MnN-P63/mmc undergoes the phase transition into MnN-I4/mmm. Above 41.2 GPa the polymorph with a distorted NiAs-type structure, MnN-Pnma, was shown to be the thermodynamically stable phase. Thus, we have shown that the recently synthesized above ~55 GPa new high-pressure phase of MnN should have the distorted NiAs-type structure. In addition, for all considered MnN polymorphs the mechanical properties were estimated. It was shown that all MnN polymorphs fall below the minimum threshold for hard materials (HV > 20 GPa) and therefore they could not be classified as hard materials.

Abstract:The influence of external pressure on the structural properties of manganese monophosphides (MnP) at room temperature has been studied using in situ angle dispersive synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction (AD-XRD) with a diamond anvil cell. The crystal structure of MnP is stable between 0 to 15 GPa. However, the compressibility of b-axis is much larger than those of a- and c-axes. From this result we suggested that the occurrence of superconductivity in MnP was induced by suppression of the long-range antiferromagnetically ordered state rather than a structural phase transition. Furthermore, the present experimental results show that the Pnma phase of MnP undergoes a pressure-induced structural phase transition at similar to 15.0 GPa. This finding lighted up-to-date understanding of the common prototype B31 structure (Strukturbericht Designation: B31) in transition metal monophosphides. No additional structural phase transition was observed up to 35.1 GPa (Run 1) and 40.2 GPa (Run 2) from the present AD-XRD results. With an extensive crystal structure searching and ab initio calculations, we predict that MnP underwent two pressure-induced structural phase transitions of Pnma -> P2(1)3 and P2(1)3 -> Pm-3m (CsCl-type) at 55.0 and 92.0 GPa, respectively. The structural stability and the electronic structures of manganese monophosphides under high pressure are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:Mn2(C2H6N6)4(NO3)4·2H2O (Mn) was analyzed by in situ Raman scattering, infrared absorption, and synchrotron angle‐dispersive X‐ray diffraction (ADXRD) technologies up to ~20 GPa at roomtemperature. Detailed spectral analyses revealed that Mn underwent three pressure‐induced phase transitions, and the existence of the phase transitions was confirmed through ADXRD experiments. This work may lay the foundation for further investigating the structure and properties of energetic coordination complexes. Mn2(C2H6N6)4(NO3)4·2H2O (Mn) as one of the energetic coordination complexes was chosen for high‐pressure research. In this work, Mn was analyzed by in situ Raman scattering, infrared absorption, and synchrotron angle‐dispersive X‐ray diffraction (ADXRD) technologies up to ~20 GPa at room temperature. The vibrational modes of Mn at ambient pressure were comprehensively resolved based on the experimental results. Detailed spectral analyses revealed that Mn underwent three pressure‐induced phase transitions at 0.5, 2.5, and 5.7 GPa, respectively. ADXRD experiments confirmed the existence of these three phase transitions in Raman and infrared spectra analyses. Based on the analysis of the vibrational spectra and the changes of lattice parameters under pressure, it can be considered that the deformation of the 3‐hydrazino‐4‐amino‐1, 2, 4‐triazole (HATr) ligand led to the first phase transition, and the distortion of the triazole ring induced the second phase transition, and the rearrangement of the hydrogen bonds resulted in the third phase transition. In addition, it can be inferred from Raman spectra and ADXRD data that Mn may have experienced the abnormal expansion during the first phase transition. This work may lay the foundation for further investigating the structure and properties of energetic coordination complexes under pressure.

Abstract:Pressure engineering has attracted growing interest in the understanding of structural changes and structure-property relations of layered materials. In this study, we investigated the effect of pressure on the crystal structure of Mn3Sn.In-situhigh-pressure x-ray diffraction experiments revealed that Mn3Sn maintained hexagonal lattice symmetry within the pressure range of ambient to 50.4 GPa. The ratio of lattice constantsc/ais almost independent of the pressure and remains constant at 0.80, indicating a stable cell shape. Density functional theory calculations revealed the strong correlation between the crystal structure and the localization ofdelectrons. The Mn3Sn has been found in flat energy bands near the Fermi level, exhibiting a large density of states (DOS) primarily contributed by thedelectrons. This large DOS near the Fermi level increases the energy barrier for a phase transition, making the transition from the hexagonal phase to the tetragonal phase challenging. Our results confirm the structural stability of Mn3Sn under high pressure, which is beneficial to the robustness of spintronic devices.

Abstract:The structural behavior of Mg3N2 has been investigated up to 40.7 GPa at room temperature by means of angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction. A reversible, first-order structural phase transition from the ambient cubic phase (la (3) over bar) to a high-pressure monoclinic phase (C2/m) is found to start at similar to 20.6 GPa and complete at similar to 32.5 GPa for the first time. The equation of state determined from our experiments yields bulk moduli of 110.7(2) and 171.5(1) GPa for the cubic and monoclinic phases, respectively, indicating higher incompressibility of the high-pressure phase Of Mg3N2. First-principles calculations reproduced the phase stability and transition pressure determined in our experiment, In addition, a second phase transition from the monoclinic phase to a hexagonal phase (P (3) over barm(1)) was predicted around 67 GPa for Mg3N2. The electronic band structures of three phases of Mg3N2 are also calculated and discussed.
Structural Transition of Mnnb2o6 under Quasi-Hydrostatic Pressure

Abstract:High-pressure Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction studies on manganese niobate (MnNb2O6) have been carried out in a diamond anvil cell at room temperature up to 41 GPa. A pressure-induced phase transition was observed at 12 GPa accompanied by the softening of two internal vibration modes v(10)(B-2g) and v(8)(A(g)). Disappearing of most Raman vibration peaks under high pressure reveals that the NbO6 octahedra distort heavily through the transition; this is evidenced by the X-ray diffraction results, but the octahedral units still exist, as the internal Nb-O strengthening vibration is observable even at the highest pressure in this study. The equation of state for MnNb2O6 in low pressure phase I was obtained with third-order Birch-Murnaghan method, yielding a zero-pressure bulk modulus B-0 and its pressure derivative B-0' of 154.4 +/- 3.5 GPa and 4.1, respectively. The volume dependencies of the optical lattice mode frequencies and their respective Griineisen parameters were extracted; it is suggested that the instability of the columbite orthorhombic structure at high pressure is related to the strong deformation of the NbO6 octahedra. Decompression measurements suggest that the pressure-induced transformation is partly reversible.

Abstract:The high pressure and high-temperature behavior of MnCO3 was investigated up to 55GPa at ambient temperature and up to 573K at ambient pressure by Raman spectroscopy, respectively. Some new modes were detected at approximate to 16 and approximate to 32GPa, which were assigned to MnCO3-I below 16GPa and to MnCO3-II above 32GPa, and to a coexisting phase of them in between. The high pressure vibration properties of all Raman modes, especially high frequency modes, were systematically reported. The coexisting phase of MnCO3-I and MnCO3-II had much easier compressibility than the MnCO3-II phase. The thermal stability of MnCO3 was at least to 573K and its thermal expansion along the c axis was easier than a and b axes.

Abstract:We did extensive research for the nanolaminate Mn+1AXn (n = 1, 2, 3, etc.) ceramics on their structural stability, in which the “M”, “A” and “X” dependence of the phase transition pressure is concluded. Mo2GaC presents multi-phase co-existence status at high pressure. The hexagonal P63/mmc to tetragonal P4/mmm transition is the common direct route for the N-containing MAX due probably to the high transition pressure. P63 /mmc (No.194, α, β) α → β → P4/mmm transition might be the common route for the C-containing MAX due probably to the low α → β transition pressure. Nb2InN/Nb2GaN and Mo2InN present c-axis abnormal elongation at low pressures.

Abstract:The structural stability and electrical properties of AlB2-type MnB2 were studied based on high pressure angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction, in situ electrical resistivity measured in a diamond anvil cell (DAC) and first-principles calculations under high pressure. The x-ray diffraction results show that the structure of AlB2-type MnB2 remains stable up to 42.6 GPa. From the equation of state of MnB2, we obtained a bulk modulus value of 169.9 +/- 3.7 GPa with a fixed pressure derivative of 4, which indicates that AlB2-type MnB2 is a hard and incompressible material. The electrical resistance undergoes a transition at about 19.3 GPa, which can be explained by a transition of manganese 3d electrons from localization to delocalization under high pressure.

Abstract:MnN systems have been widely used to investigate Mn incorporated into SIC-V compounds, which combines the spin and electron charge as promising diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS). However, few experi-ments have demonstrated the magnetic transformation of MnN with lattice constant changes, although it has been mentioned many times in previous theoretical calculations. In this study, we synthesize MnN single crystal under high pressure and temperature. Furthermore, we perform high-pressure resistance, magnetic resistance and synchrotron radiation on MnN single crystal/polycrystalline and observe the first -order phase transition accompanied with antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) magnetic struc-ture transition under 34 GPa. The experimental result and first-principles calculations reveal the same magnetic and structural transition of MnN in the compression process from equilibrium volume 18.2 to16 A3. An analysis of electronic structure and magnetic interactions in terms of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian indicates a strong FM coupling in the [001] plane due to the double exchange mechanism of Mn eg orbitals. With the reduced Mn-N bond length under high pressure, the enhanced FM double exchange interactions could induce the magnetic transition from AFM to FM and subsequently lead to a structural transition from a face-centered tetragonal structure to a cubic structure. Abstract:Synthesis of nanomaterials with target crystal structures, especially those new structures that cannot be crystallized in their bulk counterparts, is of considerable interest owing to their strongly structure-dependent properties. Here, we have successfully synthesized and identified new-phase nanocrystals (NCs) associated with orthorhombic MnP-type (B31) MnS by utilizing an effective high-pressure technique. It is particularly worth noting that the generated new structured MnS NCs were captured as expected by quenching the high-pressure phase to the ambient conditions at room temperature. Likewise, the commercially available bulk rocksalt (RS) MnS material underwent unambiguously a reversible phase transition when the pressure was released completely. First-principles calculations further supported that the B31-MnS was more energetically preferable than the RS one under high pressure, which can be plausibly interpreted by the structural buckling with respect to zigzagged arrangements within B31 unit cell. Our findings represent a significant step forward in a deeper understanding of the high-pressure phase diagram of MnS and even provide a promising strategy to prepare desired nanomaterials with new structures that do not exist in their bulk counterparts, thus greatly increasing the choice of materials for a variety of applications.

Abstract:The exploration of the vast phase space of transition metal nitrides is critical for discovering novel materials and potential technological applications. Manganese mononitride with a tetragonal structure (space group I4/mmm) was synthesized in a laser-heating diamond anvil cell, which could be quenched to ambient pressure. The bulk modulus of 173 GPa was measured using in situ high-pressure diffraction, and the axial compressibility shows that, under pressure, the a direction is much more compressible than the c direction in tetragonal MnN. DFT results with correction of the on-site repulsion (GGA + U) confirm that tetragonal MnN is energetically stable and antiferromagnetic. This study highlights the need to include on-site repulsion to understand 3d metal nitrides.

Abstract:The structural phase transition between B1 (alpha-MnS) and B3 (beta-MnS) is investigated using a density functional theory method. The structural phase transition pressure Pt from alpha-MnS to beta-MnS, which is determined on the basis of the third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of states, is 30.75 GPa. Also, the lattice parameters a, the bulk modulus B and pressure derivative of bulk modulus B', which are generally in good agreement with experiments and other theoretical values, are obtained under zero pressure. For further investigation of the structural phase transition pressure of MnS, the relative volumes V/V(0), the bulk modulus B, first and second pressure derivatives (B' and B '') of bulk modulus for the two structures of MnS have been calculated under various pressures.

Investigations of High-Pressure Properties of MnF2 Based on the First-Principles Method

Abstract:The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of MnF2 under high pressure and high temperature are investigated based on the first-principles methods combined with the quasiharmonic approximation and structure-search method. The obtained results using different exchange-correlation functionals lead to a band gap between 7.3 and 10 eV for rutile-type MnF2. The band gap of rutile-type MnF2 varies very slightly with pressure, giving rise to comparable pressure coefficients with the reported materials with the smallest pressure coefficient, such as diamond and SiC. At room temperature, the phase-transition sequence of rutile-type (P4(2)/mnm) -> SrI2-type (Pbca) -> cotunnite-type (Pnma) can be found, and temperature will strongly affect phase-transition behaviors, which may result in the reported experimental discrepancies about high-pressure phases.

Abstract:Studying manganese fluoride (MnF2) under high-pressure and high-temperature (HP-HT) conditions is of great significance for understanding its important magnetic and piezomagnetic properties. The structural evolution and thermoelastic behavior of MnF2 were studied at HP-HT conditions up to ~13.1 GPa and ~700 K based on in situ synchrotron angle dispersive powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) combined with diamond anvil cell (DAC). Four phases of MnF2 are successfully observed through the pressure-temperature (P-T) range of the experiment. The structural phase transitions are with the following sequence: rutile-type (P4 2 /mnm) → α-PbO2-type (Pbcn) → P m → ZrO2-type (Pbcm) → SrI2-type (Pbca) at HP-HT conditions, where the α-PbO2-type (Pbcn) and the P m structures are observed upon decompression. A phase diagram of MnF2 is presented in this study. In addition, the bulk modulus for the SrI2-type structure (Pbca) of MnF2 is 84 (3) GPa when fixed K 0' = 4. Moreover, we also obtain (∂K/∂T) P = −0.012 (7) GPaK−1, and the volumetric thermal expansion coefficient α 0 = 3.8 (7) × 10−5 K−1 at 300 K. Furthermore, the thermal expansion coefficients for the rutile-type structure (P4 2 /mnm) of MnF2 by fitting the temperature-volume data to the Fei-type thermal equation of state (EoS) are also obtained. The volumetric thermal expansion coefficient of MnF2 is 0.87 × 10−5 K−1, and its axial thermal expansivities are α a0 = 0.13 × 10−5 K−1 and α c0 = 0.64 × 10−5 K−1 along the a-axis and c-axis, respectively.

Abstract:We employ the density functional theory to study a structural transition of MnO from B1 (rocksalt) to B8 (NiAs) structures that was observed experimentally at pressures around 100 GPa. We utilize all-electron description as well as norm-conserving pseudopotentials and demonstrate that these two approaches can significantly differ in quantitative predictions. We explicitly show that even small-core pseudopotentials exhibit transferability inaccuracies for quantities sensitive to the energy differences between high- and low-spin polarizations of valence electrons.

Abstract:Four novel AlN phases with low density and high hardness are predicted by using a evolutionary methodology on structural search. All four phases are thermodynamically more favourable than the rock salt structure of AlN at ambient pressure and will be transformed to rock salt AlN at certain pressure. All these phases are mechanically and dynamically stable by checking the independent elastic constants and phonon dispersion spectra. The calculated mechanical properties reveal that the proposed AlN phases are hard, and the Vickers hardness of the AlN phases ranges from 13.2GPa to 15.2GPa. The calculated band structures of the novel AlN phases reveal that these AlN phases possess semiconductive properties with wide direct band gaps at G points, and the gaps range from 3.627eV to 3.927eV.

Abstract:High-quality P6322 Mn2N0.86 samples were synthesised using a high-pressure metathesis reaction, and the properties of the material were investigated. The measurements revealed that the Vickers hardness was 7.47 GPa, which is less than that predicted by commonly used theoretical models. At low air pressure, Mn2N0.86 and MnO coexist at 500 to 600 °C, and by excluding air, we succeeded in producing Mn4N by heating Mn2N0.86 in nitrogen atmosphere; we carefully studied this process with thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). This gives a hint that to control temperature, air pressure and gas concentration might be an effective way to prepare fine Mn-N-O catalysis. Magnetic measurements indicated that ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism coexist within Mn2N0.86 at room temperature and that these magnetic properties are induced by nitrogen vacancies. Ab intio simulation was used to probe the nature of the magnetism in greater detail. The research contributes to the available data and the understanding of Mn2N0.86 and suggests ways to control the formation of materials based on Mn2N0.86.

Abstract:The effect of pressure on crystal structures, electronic properties, hydrogen bonds, optical properties and mechanical features of high-performing energetic material 1,5-diaminotetrazole-4: N-oxide was investigated by high-precision DFT-D method. The results reveal that there exists a critical point of phase transition around 8 GPa, reflected in various properties of the crystal. Band gap decreases gradually as the pressure increases, illustrating electrons are easier to transit from occupied orbit to the empty. The DOS analysis indicates that C-NH 2 , N-NH 2 and N = O bonds may play a role as a reaction channel for the initial decomposition under high pressures. The hydrogen bond analysis indicates that pressure can alter the distribution of hydrogen bond in the crystal and modify the physicochemical properties. The absorption spectra of the crystal under high-pressure conditions show several strong bands in UV–visible region. The analysis on mechanical properties reveals that pressure can effectively improve the rigidity, plasticity and ductility for the crystal. Our results clarify the effect of pressure on energetic materials and are conducive to find the new crystalline phases for energetic materials.
