Abstract:Because of their ultrathin thickness, two-dimensional (2D) materials exhibit unique properties in different fields, such as electronics and catalysis. As one of these materials, a 2D magnet is an ideal platform for fundamental physics research and magnetic device development, making it widely studied. This review provides the details of recent progress of 2D magnetic materials. First, the characterization methods of magnetism are summarized. Then, the categories of 2D magnets and the strategies for regulating 2D magnetism are discussed. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in 2D magnetic material development are pointed out.

Abstract:<p>As a long‐standing research topic in materials physics and chemistry, magnetic materials have been receiving increasing attention for their applications in spintronic devices, such as spin field‐effect transistor and data‐storage memory. Two‐dimensional (2D) magnets are a family of emerging magnetic materials with atomically thin thickness, which can be easily integrated into heterostructural devices, providing incredible possibility for understanding 2D magnetism and great potential for applications in future ultrathin spintronic devices. Recent effort from theory, simulations and experiments has made notable progress on 2D magnets and devices, especially on 2D van der Waals materials and heterojunctions. Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials have demonstrated excellent chemical, optical, electrical, and magnetic properties, particularly in the development of multifunctional electronic and spin electronic devices, showcasing tremendous potential. Therefore, the corresponding synthesis techniques for 2D magnetic materials that offer high quality, high yield, low cost, timesaving, and simplicity are highly desired. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent research advances in the preparation of magnetic 2D materials, with a particular focus on the preparation methods employed. Moreover, the characteristics and applications of these magnetic materials are also discussed. Finally, the challenges and prospects of synthesis methods for magnetic 2D materials are briefly addressed. This review serves as a guiding reference for the controlled synthesis of 2D magnetic materials.

Abstract:Intrinsic two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials own strong long-range magnetism while their characteristics of the ultrathin thickness and smooth surface provide an ideal platform for manipulating the magnetic properties at 2D limit. This makes them to be potential candidates in various spintronic applications compared to their corresponding bulk counterparts. The discovery of magnetic ordering in 2D CrI3 and Gr2Ge2Te6 nanostructures stimulated tremendous research interest in both experimental and theoretical studies on various intrinsic magnets at 2D limit. This review gives a comprehensive overview of the recent progress on the emergent 2D magnets and heterostructures. Firstly, several kinds of typical 2D magnetic materials discovered in the last few years and their fabrication methods are summarized in detail. Secondly, the current strategies for manipulating magnetic properties in 2D materials are further discussed. Then, the recent advances on the construction of representative van der Waals magnetic heterostructures and their respective performance are provided. With the hope of motivating the researchers in this area, we finally offered the challenges and outlook on 2D magnetism.

Abstract:2D magnetic materials have shown great potentials in fundamental research and spintronic devices. However, the discovered 2D magnetic materials are still limited and their monotonous magnetic properties cannot meet the needs of practical applications. Recently, the modulation of magnetism in 2D materials attracted tremendous attention, which can enrich the 2D magnetic material family and extend their application prospects. Structure engineering is one of the most effective ways to realize tunable 2D magnetic properties. Herein, the recent progress on 2D magnetism modulation via structure engineering is summarized. The basic theory of 2D magnetism is introduced at first. Then, the magnetism modulation by structure engineering is classified into two ways: inducing long‐range magnetic ordering into nonmagnetic materials and regulating the native magnetism of intrinsic magnetic materials. Moreover, recent progress on magnetism modulation by intercalation, chemical doping, defect engineering, and heterostructure construction is discussed in detail. Finally, the challenges and prospects in the future of 2D magnetism are also provided.

Abstract:The two-dimensional (2D) magnet, a long-standing missing member in the family of 2D functional materials, is promising for next-generation information technology. The recent experimental discovery of 2D magnetic ordering in CrI3, Cr2Ge2Te6, VSe2, and Fe3GeTe2 has stimulated intense research activities to expand the scope of 2D magnets. This review covers the essential progress on 2D magnets, with an emphasis on the current understanding of the magnetic exchange interaction, the databases of 2D magnets, and the modification strategies for modulation of magnetism. We will address a large number of 2D intrinsic magnetic materials, including binary transition metal halogenides; chalogenides; carbides; nitrides; oxides; borides; silicides; MXene; ternary transition metal compounds CrXTe3, MPX3, Fe-Ge-Te, MBi2Te4, and MXY (M = transition metal; X = O, S, Se, Te, N; Y = Cl, Br, I); f-state magnets; p-state magnets; and organic magnets. Their electronic structure, magnetic moment, Curie temperature, and magnetic anisotropy energy will be presented. According to the specific 2D magnets, the underlying direct, superexchange, double exchange, super-superexchange, extended superexchange, and multi-intermediate double exchange interactions will be described. In addition, we will also highlight the effective strategies to manipulate the interatomic exchange mechanism to improve the Curie temperature of 2D magnets, such as chemical functionalization, isoelectronic substitution, alloying, strain engineering, defect engineering, applying electronic/magnetic field, interlayer coupling, carrier doping, optical controlling, and intercalation. We hope this review will contribute to understanding the magnetic exchange interaction of existing 2D magnets, developing unprecedented 2D magnets with desired properties, and offering new perspectives in this rapidly expanding field.

Abstract:Recently, two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials have attracted extensive interest thanks to their potential application as spintronic devices. Albeit bulk magnetic materials are investigated for many years, current developments in nanoscale characterization and device fabrication right down to the 2D limit have unfolded new possibilities. Herein, we focus on the recent progress of 2D magnetic materials in the aspects of their synthesis, characterization, properties and spintronic applications. Firstly, we present a brief theoretical background of 2D magnetism. Secondly, we outline the growth techniques of 2D magnetic materials including chemical vapor transport (CVT), flux method, mechanical exfoliation, liquid exfoliation, molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Then, the methods to characterize the magnetic properties of 2D materials such as Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL), photoemission electron microscopy (PEM), Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (LTEM), magnetic force microscopy (MFM), magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE), reflective magnetic circular dichroism (RMCD), superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and magnetoresistance measurement are thoroughly summarized. Afterward, the physical properties and spintronic device applications of 2D magnetic materials are highlighted. Finally, we give our insights on current and future issues in this growing field which will be helpful for the researchers in 2D materials with magnetic properties.

Abstract:The magnetic anisotropy can stabilize long-range ferromagnetic order in pristine two-dimensional (2D) crystals, which inspires the research of fundamental physics and spintronic devices based on 2D ferromagnetic materials. 2D ferromagnetic materials with intriguing magnetic properties offer an excellent platform for studying magnetism at 2D limit and exploring advanced spintronic devices. As the dimensionality decreases to 2D scale, 2D ferromagnetic materials exhibit distinctive magnetic properties compared with their bulk counterparts. Abstract:The emergence of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals magnets provides an exciting platform for exploring magnetism in the monolayer limit. Exotic quantum phenomena and significant potential for spintronic applications are demonstrated in 2D magnetic crystals and heterostructures, which offer unprecedented possibilities in advanced formation technology with low power and high efficiency. In this review, we summarize recent advances in 2D van der Waals magnetic crystals. We focus mainly on van der Waals materials of truly 2D nature with intrinsic magnetism. The detection methods of 2D magnetic materials are first introduced in detail. Subsequently, the effective strategies to modulate the magnetic behavior of 2D magnets (e.g., Curie temperature, magnetic anisotropy, magnetic exchange interaction) are presented. Then, we list the applications of 2D magnets in the spintronic devices. We also highlight current challenges and broad space for the development of 2D magnets in further studies.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetism is now the attention of central demands in fundamental condensed matter physics concerning about the understanding and control of new phases. The demonstration of ferromagnetism in an atomically thin layer develops the prospects for a variety of device applications of 2D van der Waals (vdW) materials. The long-range ferromagnetic ordering in 2D vdW crystals together with their fascinating electric and optical properties will lead to magnetic, magneto-electric, and magneto-optic applications. Low-power, high-speed, and ultra-compact spintronic devices, data storage, information recognition and processing, smart sensors, and quantum computing applications are highly necessary for future industrial applications. This review covers the fundamental chemical structures and synthesis methods of 2D magnetic materials, the techniques for characterizing magnetic properties, device applications and the challenges faced in this emerging field. The progress in both intrinsic and extrinsic magnetic 2D materials originated from external stimuli such as doping, defects, functionalization, and strain is emphasized. The comparison of fundamental physics, chemistry, and related issues of vdW 2D magnetic materials with other-dimensional counterparts concentrated on backgrounds is also emphasized. We focus on the design of chemical and crystal structures leading to 2D magnetism, detailed chemical and physical properties and the device applications of vdW 2D magnetism. Finally, challenges and outlooks in the realization of 2D magnetism are discussed and believed that this emerging field will excite more intensive research and provide exceptional breakthroughs in the field of spintronics. Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures with robust room-temperature ferromagnetism or ferrimagnetism have attracted significant attention because of their potential applications in fundamental research, integrated circuits, and next-generation spintronic devices. Magnetic order in 2D nanostructures can be divided into intrinsic and defect-induced magnetism. In this review, we highlight recent progress on the synthesis and magnetic properties of intrinsic 2D magnetic van der Waals nanostructures, such as VS2, CrI3, and 2D metal-organic frameworks. In addition, defect-induced magnetism in several systems such as graphene, MoS2 nanosheets, and Ni3N nanosheets are briefly introduced. Finally, we discuss future prospects for this booming research area.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetism and nontrivial band topology are both areas of research that are currently receiving significant attention in the study of 2D materials. Recently, a novel class of materials has emerged, known as 2D magnetic topological materials, which elegantly combine 2D magnetism and nontrivial topology. This field has garnered increasing interest, especially due to the emergence of several novel magnetic topological states that have been generalized into the 2D scale. These states include antiferromagnetic topological insulators/semimetals, second-order topological insulators, and topological half-metals. Despite the rapid advancements in this emerging research field in recent years, there have been few comprehensive summaries of the state-of-the-art progress. Therefore, this review aims to provide a thorough analysis of current progress on 2D magnetic topological materials. We cover various 2D magnetic topological insulators, a range of 2D magnetic topological semimetals, and the novel 2D topological half-metals, systematically analyzing the basic topological theory, the course of development, the material realization, and potential applications. Finally, we discuss the challenges and prospects for 2D magnetic topological materials, highlighting the potential for future breakthroughs in this exciting field.

As the dimension of the material is reduced, such that the atoms are in a single monolayer, it was widely believed that thermal fluctuations overwhelm and prevent magnetic ordering. Gong and Zhang review the developments that have followed the recent discovery of magnetism in two-dimensional materials. Recognizing that magnetic anisotropy can be used to induce stable magnetism in atomic monolayers, they provide an overview of the materials available and the physical understanding of the effects and then discuss how these effects could be exploited for widespread practical applications. Abstract:The discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnetism within atomically thin structures derived from layered crystals has opened up a new realm for exploring magnetic heterostructures. This emerging field provides a foundational platform for investigating unique physical properties and exquisite phenomena at the nanometer and molecular/atomic scales. By engineering 2D interfaces using physical methods and selecting interlayer interactions, we unlock the potential for extraordinary exchange dynamics. This potential extends to high-performance and high-density magnetic memory applications, as well as future advancements in neuromorphic and quantum computing. This review delves into recent advances in 2D magnets, elucidates the mechanisms behind 2D interfaces, and highlights the development of 2D devices for spintronics and quantum information. Particular focus is placed on 2D magnetic heterostructures with topological properties, promising for a resilient and low-error information system. Finally, we discuss the trends of 2D heterostructures for future electronics, considering the challenges and opportunities from physics, material synthesis, and technological prospective.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials and their van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures provide powerful platforms for exploring fascinating physical phenomena and implementing intriguing applications. The recent discovery of 2D magnetic materials opens up many exciting topics in the research of 2D materials. 2D magnetic materials not only exhibit diverse properties on their own, which can be effectively controlled via external stimuli, but also can serve as a part of vdW heterostructures, creating a variety of unprecedented properties and functionalities. The field of 2D magnetism has grown rapidly in the past few years. In this review, we summarize the recent progress on the emergent phenomena in this active field. We review the well-established understanding of typical 2D magnetic materials and the vdW heterostructures and introduce the manipulations of their magnetic properties. In addition, we discuss the interplay between magnetism and topology in some recently discovered 2D materials. Moreover, we also address the valley relevant physics and the topological spin textures in 2D magnetic materials. Finally, we highlight some future interests in this promising field.

Abstract:The emergence of low-dimensional nanomaterials has brought revolutionized development of magnetism, as the size effect can significantly influence the spin arrangement. Since the first demonstration of truly two-dimensional magnetic materials (2DMMs) in 2017, a wide variety of magnetic phases and associated properties have been exhibited in these 2DMMs, which offer a new opportunity to manipulate the spin-based devices efficiently in the future. Herein, we focus on the recent progress of 2DMMs and heterostructures in the aspects of their structural characteristics, physical properties, and spintronic applications. Firstly, the microscopy characterization of the spatial arrangement of spins in 2D lattices is reviewed. Afterwards, the optical probes in the light-matter-spin interactions at the 2D scale are discussed. Then, particularly, we systematically summarize the recent work on the electronic and spintronic devices of 2DMMs. In the section of electronic properties, we raise several exciting phenomena in 2DMMs, i.e., long-distance magnon transport, field-effect transistors, varying magnetoresistance behavior, and (quantum) anomalous Hall effect. In the section of spintronic applications, we highlight spintronic devices based on 2DMMs, e.g., spin valves, spin-orbit torque, spin field-effect transistors, spin tunneling field-effect transistors, and spin-filter magnetic tunnel junctions. At last, we also provide our perspectives on the current challenges and future expectations in this field, which may be a helpful guide for theorists and experimentalists who are exploring the optical, electronic, and spintronic properties of 2DMMs.

Abstract:As the family of magnetic materials is rapidly growing, two-dimensional（2D） van der Waals（vdW） magnets have attracted increasing attention as a platform to explore fundamental physical problems of magnetism and their potential applications. This paper reviews the recent progress on emergent vd W magnetic compounds and their potential applications in devices. First, we summarize the current vd W magnetic materials and their synthetic methods. Then, we focus on their structure and the modulation of magnetic properties by analyzing the representative vd W magnetic materials with different magnetic structures. In addition, we pay attention to the heterostructures of vd W magnetic materials, which are expected to produce revolutionary applications of magnetism-related devices.
