Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetism is now the attention of central demands in fundamental condensed matter physics concerning about the understanding and control of new phases. The demonstration of ferromagnetism in an atomically thin layer develops the prospects for a variety of device applications of 2D van der Waals (vdW) materials. The long-range ferromagnetic ordering in 2D vdW crystals together with their fascinating electric and optical properties will lead to magnetic, magneto-electric, and magneto-optic applications. Low-power, high-speed, and ultra-compact spintronic devices, data storage, information recognition and processing, smart sensors, and quantum computing applications are highly necessary for future industrial applications. This review covers the fundamental chemical structures and synthesis methods of 2D magnetic materials, the techniques for characterizing magnetic properties, device applications and the challenges faced in this emerging field. The progress in both intrinsic and extrinsic magnetic 2D materials originated from external stimuli such as doping, defects, functionalization, and strain is emphasized. The comparison of fundamental physics, chemistry, and related issues of vdW 2D magnetic materials with other-dimensional counterparts concentrated on backgrounds is also emphasized. We focus on the design of chemical and crystal structures leading to 2D magnetism, detailed chemical and physical properties and the device applications of vdW 2D magnetism. Finally, challenges and outlooks in the realization of 2D magnetism are discussed and believed that this emerging field will excite more intensive research and provide exceptional breakthroughs in the field of spintronics. Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetism in van der Waals (vdW) atomic crystals and moiré superlattices has emerged as a topic of tremendous interest in the fields of condensed matter physics and materials science within the past half-decade since its first experimental discovery in 2016–2017. It has not only served as a powerful platform for investigating phase transitions in the 2D limit and exploring new phases of matter, but also provided new opportunities for applications in microelectronics, spintronics, magnonics, optomagnetics, and so on. Despite the flourish developments in 2D magnetism over this short period of time, further efforts are welcome in multiple forefronts of 2D magnetism research for achieving the ultimate goal of routinely implementing 2D magnets as quantum electronic components. In this review article, we will start with basic concepts and properties of 2D magnetism, followed by a brief overview of historical efforts in 2D magnetism research and then a comprehensive review of vdW material-based 2D magnetism. We will conclude with discussions on potential future research directions for this growing field of 2D vdW magnetism.

Abstract:Intrinsic two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials own strong long-range magnetism while their characteristics of the ultrathin thickness and smooth surface provide an ideal platform for manipulating the magnetic properties at 2D limit. This makes them to be potential candidates in various spintronic applications compared to their corresponding bulk counterparts. The discovery of magnetic ordering in 2D CrI3 and Gr2Ge2Te6 nanostructures stimulated tremendous research interest in both experimental and theoretical studies on various intrinsic magnets at 2D limit. This review gives a comprehensive overview of the recent progress on the emergent 2D magnets and heterostructures. Firstly, several kinds of typical 2D magnetic materials discovered in the last few years and their fabrication methods are summarized in detail. Secondly, the current strategies for manipulating magnetic properties in 2D materials are further discussed. Then, the recent advances on the construction of representative van der Waals magnetic heterostructures and their respective performance are provided. With the hope of motivating the researchers in this area, we finally offered the challenges and outlook on 2D magnetism.

Abstract:The emergence of low-dimensional nanomaterials has brought revolutionized development of magnetism, as the size effect can significantly influence the spin arrangement. Since the first demonstration of truly two-dimensional magnetic materials (2DMMs) in 2017, a wide variety of magnetic phases and associated properties have been exhibited in these 2DMMs, which offer a new opportunity to manipulate the spin-based devices efficiently in the future. Herein, we focus on the recent progress of 2DMMs and heterostructures in the aspects of their structural characteristics, physical properties, and spintronic applications. Firstly, the microscopy characterization of the spatial arrangement of spins in 2D lattices is reviewed. Afterwards, the optical probes in the light-matter-spin interactions at the 2D scale are discussed. Then, particularly, we systematically summarize the recent work on the electronic and spintronic devices of 2DMMs. In the section of electronic properties, we raise several exciting phenomena in 2DMMs, i.e., long-distance magnon transport, field-effect transistors, varying magnetoresistance behavior, and (quantum) anomalous Hall effect. In the section of spintronic applications, we highlight spintronic devices based on 2DMMs, e.g., spin valves, spin-orbit torque, spin field-effect transistors, spin tunneling field-effect transistors, and spin-filter magnetic tunnel junctions. At last, we also provide our perspectives on the current challenges and future expectations in this field, which may be a helpful guide for theorists and experimentalists who are exploring the optical, electronic, and spintronic properties of 2DMMs.

Abstract:As the family of magnetic materials is rapidly growing, two-dimensional（2D） van der Waals（vdW） magnets have attracted increasing attention as a platform to explore fundamental physical problems of magnetism and their potential applications. This paper reviews the recent progress on emergent vd W magnetic compounds and their potential applications in devices. First, we summarize the current vd W magnetic materials and their synthetic methods. Then, we focus on their structure and the modulation of magnetic properties by analyzing the representative vd W magnetic materials with different magnetic structures. In addition, we pay attention to the heterostructures of vd W magnetic materials, which are expected to produce revolutionary applications of magnetism-related devices. To motivate the researchers in this area, we finally provide the challenges and outlook on 2D vd W magnetism.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials and their van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures provide powerful platforms for exploring fascinating physical phenomena and implementing intriguing applications. The recent discovery of 2D magnetic materials opens up many exciting topics in the research of 2D materials. 2D magnetic materials not only exhibit diverse properties on their own, which can be effectively controlled via external stimuli, but also can serve as a part of vdW heterostructures, creating a variety of unprecedented properties and functionalities. The field of 2D magnetism has grown rapidly in the past few years. In this review, we summarize the recent progress on the emergent phenomena in this active field. We review the well-established understanding of typical 2D magnetic materials and the vdW heterostructures and introduce the manipulations of their magnetic properties. In addition, we discuss the interplay between magnetism and topology in some recently discovered 2D materials. Moreover, we also address the valley relevant physics and the topological spin textures in 2D magnetic materials. Finally, we highlight some future interests in this promising field.

Abstract:2D van der Waals (vdW) magnets, which present intrinsic ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic ground states at finite temperatures down to atomic‐layer thicknesses, open a new horizon in materials science and enable the potential development of new spin‐related applications. The layered structure of vdW magnets facilitates their atomic‐layer cleavability and magnetic anisotropy, which counteracts spin fluctuations, thereby providing an ideal platform for theoretically and experimentally exploring magnetic phase transitions in the 2D limit. With reduced dimensions, the susceptibility of 2D magnets to a large variety of external stimuli also makes them more promising than their bulk counterpart in various device applications. Here, the current status of characterization and tuning of the magnetic properties of 2D vdW magnets, particularly the atomic‐layer thickness, is presented. Various state‐of‐the‐art optical and electrical techniques have been applied to reveal the magnetic states of 2D vdW magnets. Other emerging 2D vdW magnets and future perspectives on the stacking strategy are also given; it is believed that they will excite more intensive research and provide unprecedented opportunities in the field of spintronics.

Integrating 2D Magnets for Quantum Devices: from Materials and Characterization to Future Technology

Abstract:The unveiling of 2D van der Waals magnetism in 2017 ignited a surge of interest in low-dimensional magnetism. With dimensions reduced, research has delved into facile electric control of 2D magnetism, high-quality heterostructure design, and new device functionality. These atomically thin magnetic materials have spawned a burgeoning field known as 2D spintronics, holding immense promise for future quantum technologies. In this review, we comprehensively survey the current advancements in 2D magnet-based quantum devices, accentuating their role in manifesting exotic properties and enabling novel functionalities. Topological states, spin torques, voltage control of magnetic anisotropy, strain engineering, twistronics and designer interface will be discussed. Furthermore, we offer an outlook to guide their development in future CMOS and quantum hardware paradigms.

Abstract:The recent discovery of two-dimensional magnetic order in van-der Waals materials has stimulated a renaissance in the field of atomically-thin magnets. This has led to promising demonstrations of spintronic functionality such as tunneling magnetoresistance. The frantic pace of this emerging research, however, has also led to some confusion surrounding the underlying phenomena of phase transitions in two-dimensional (2D) magnets. In fact, there is a rich history of experimental precedents beginning in the 1960s with quasi-2D bulk magnets and progressing to the 1980s using atomically-thin sheets of elemental metals. This review provides a holistic discussion of the current state of knowledge on the three distinct families of low-dimensional magnets: quasi-2D, ultra-thin films and van-der Waals crystals. It highlights the unique opportunities presented by the latest implementation in van-der Waals materials. By revisiting the fundamental insights from the field of low-dimensional magnetism, this review will highlight factors that can be used to enhance material performance. For example, the limits imposed on the critical temperature by the Mermin-Wagner theorem can be escaped in three separate ways: magnetocrystalline anisotropy, long range interactions and shape anisotropy. Several recent experimental reports of atomically-thin magnets with Curie temperatures above room temperature are highlighted.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials are considered to be ideal candidates for the fabrication of spintronic devices because of their low dimensionality, allowing the quantization of electronic states and more degrees of freedom for device modulation. With the discovery of few-layer Cr2Ge2Te6 and monolayer CrI3 ferromagnets, the magnetism of 2D vdW materials is becoming a research focus in the fields of material science and physics. In theory, taking the Heisenberg model with finite-range exchange interactions as an example, low dimensionality and ferromagnetism are in competition. In other words, it is difficult for 2D materials to maintain their magnetism. However, the introduction of anisotropy in 2D magnetic materials enables the realization of long-range ferromagnetic order in atomically layered materials, which may offer new effective means for the design of 2D ferromagnets with high Curie temperature. Herein, current advances in the field of 2D vdW magnetic crystals, as well as intrinsic and induced ferromagnetism or antiferromagnetism, physical properties, device fabrication, and potential applications, are briefly summarized and discussed.

Abstract:In recent years, enormous efforts have been made to identify and manipulate the exotic electrical and magnetic properties at a two-dimensional (2D) limit of various exciting materials. The spin–orbit coupling (SOC) in 2D van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures opens a fascinating and versatile platform to implement the intriguing quantum-engineered spintronic devices for practical applications. This review comprehensively outlines the modern-era progress of investigating the inherent magnetism of atomically thin 2D materials . Firstly, in this review, the most recent developments of synthesis, characterizations, functionalities, and spin textures in 2D magnetic materials are summarized in detail. Secondly, we conferred the well-known phenomena related to the proximity effect, spin–orbit torque (SOT), spin valve magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ), spin field effect transistor (FET) and magneto memristive-based applications. In addition, we also explored the possible interplay between 2D magnetic materials and associated band topology for spin caloritronics. Finally, we provided our perspective on the recent and upcoming challenges and goals of this promising research area, which leads the 2D magnetic materials to the modern era of energy-efficient quantum computing.

Abstract:Abstract The unprecedented realization of two‐dimensional (2D) van der Waals magnets excitingly extends the synergy between spintronics and 2D materials, started with graphene over the last decade. This article reviews the recent milestones in the development of 2D magnets and its derived heterostructures. In particular, a number of critical challenges centered around the scalability, ambient stability and Curie temperature of these atomically thin magnets are discussed. This mini‐review also provides an outlook on what the future might hold for this integrated field of 2D spintronics, and assesses its potential in postsilicon electronics.

Abstract:The discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnetism within atomically thin structures derived from layered crystals has opened up a new realm for exploring magnetic heterostructures. This emerging field provides a foundational platform for investigating unique physical properties and exquisite phenomena at the nanometer and molecular/atomic scales. By engineering 2D interfaces using physical methods and selecting interlayer interactions, we unlock the potential for extraordinary exchange dynamics. This potential extends to high-performance and high-density magnetic memory applications, as well as future advancements in neuromorphic and quantum computing. This review delves into recent advances in 2D magnets, elucidates the mechanisms behind 2D interfaces, and highlights the development of 2D devices for spintronics and quantum information. Particular focus is placed on 2D magnetic heterostructures with topological properties, promising for a resilient and low-error information system. Finally, we discuss the trends of 2D heterostructures for future electronics, considering the challenges and opportunities from physics, material synthesis, and technological prospective.

Abstract:The two-dimensional (2D) magnet, a long-standing missing member in the family of 2D functional materials, is promising for next-generation information technology. The recent experimental discovery of 2D magnetic ordering in CrI3, Cr2Ge2Te6, VSe2, and Fe3GeTe2 has stimulated intense research activities to expand the scope of 2D magnets. This review covers the essential progress on 2D magnets, with an emphasis on the current understanding of the magnetic exchange interaction, the databases of 2D magnets, and the modification strategies for modulation of magnetism. We will address a large number of 2D intrinsic magnetic materials, including binary transition metal halogenides; chalogenides; carbides; nitrides; oxides; borides; silicides; MXene; ternary transition metal compounds CrXTe3, MPX3, Fe-Ge-Te, MBi2Te4, and MXY (M = transition metal; X = O, S, Se, Te, N; Y = Cl, Br, I); f-state magnets; p-state magnets; and organic magnets. Their electronic structure, magnetic moment, Curie temperature, and magnetic anisotropy energy will be presented. According to the specific 2D magnets, the underlying direct, superexchange, double exchange, super-superexchange, extended superexchange, and multi-intermediate double exchange interactions will be described. In addition, we will also highlight the effective strategies to manipulate the interatomic exchange mechanism to improve the Curie temperature of 2D magnets, such as chemical functionalization, isoelectronic substitution, alloying, strain engineering, defect engineering, applying electronic/magnetic field, interlayer coupling, carrier doping, optical controlling, and intercalation. We hope this review will contribute to understanding the magnetic exchange interaction of existing 2D magnets, developing unprecedented 2D magnets with desired properties, and offering new perspectives in this rapidly expanding field.

Abstract:Spintronics is a promising alternative to the conventional silicon transistor-based electronics that are gradually approaching their physical limitations. Ultrathin two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials (2D materials) with controllable spin degrees of freedom are recognized as extremely promising spintronic materials in architectures for the post-Moore era. In this Perspective, we review recent progress on spin-dependent transport behaviors (SDTBs) confined at the 2D scale, which are the mainstream paradigms for spintronic devices. We first present the mechanism and the key factors of SDTBs in 2D nonmagnetic materials-based hybrid devices. Then, some chemical modulation strategies for inducing short-range magnetic order and magneto-electric performance into 2D nonmagnetic materials are discussed. Furthermore, we concentrate on introducing intriguing SDTBs in 2D long-range ferromagnetic materials-based vdW devices. Finally, we highlight the current challenges in the study of spin-dependent transport of 2D modified materials and 2D material-based spintronic devices, in the hope of accelerating their applications.

Abstract:The emergence of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials exhibiting strong magnetization at ultrathin limits above room temperature is promising for miniaturization of devices beyond Moore’s law for future energy efficient nanoelectronic devices. Here, the current status, different mechanisms for the existence of magnetism, spin current injection, and other magnetic properties of monolayer to few layers of various 2D magnetic materials are reviewed. Some of the promising applications of these materials are spintronics devices such as spin valves, spin tunnel field-effect transistors, and spin-filtering magnetic tunnel junctions. Due to the tunable electronic properties of these 2D materials, it is quite interesting to inject the spin current with suitable ferromagnetic contacts. For instance, black phosphorus is a layered material with a small Schottky barrier height capable of injecting spin current. This review includes many recently explored 2D magnetic materials ranging from exfoliated 2D crystals to CVD grown materials from single to several layers, demonstrating tunable layer-dependent magnetic properties. We also explore some of the promising theoretical study based on 2D magnetic compounds such as 2D alkali-based chromium chalcogenides, which shows ferromagnetic as well as semiconducting behavior. The layer-dependent magnetic ordering has been observed in layered compounds like 1T-CrTe2, VSe2, CrI3, and Fe3GeTe2, which have great potential for the future applications in magnetic-based electronic devices. Finally, we emphasize the challenges, opportunities, and future directions of the 2D magnetic materials, where new discoveries might have outstanding impact in transformational scientific breakthroughs towards memory, spintronics, optoelectronics, and other multifunctional device applications.

Unlike three-dimensional (3D) magnetic systems, the electric manipulation of vdW magnetism (e.g., magnetization state, magnetic anisotropy, magnetic ordering temperature) down to the monolayer limit at ambient conditions enables high efficiency operation and low energy consumption, which has the potential to revolutionize the fields of spintronics, spin-caloritronics, and valleytronics. This article provides an in-depth analysis of the recent progress, emerging opportunities, and technical challenges in the electric manipulation of magnetic functionalities of a wide variety of 2D vdW magnetic systems ranging from metals to semiconductors and heterostructures. The state-of-the-art understanding of the mechanisms behind the electric modulation of magnetism in these 2D vdW magnetic systems will drive future research towards novel applications in spintronics, spin-caloritronics, valleytronics, and quantum computation.

Probing 2D magnetism through electronic tunneling transport

Abstract:Atomically thin van der Waals magnetic materials have gained intensive research interests in the past few years. The topic paves a way to understand the stabilization and dissipation mechanisms of long-range magnetic order in the 2D limit, which is crucial for both fundamental condensed matter physics research and technological applications. However, limited by the sample size, conventional experimental techniques such as neutron diffraction spectrum and magnetization measurements are difficult to be applied to these atomically thin materials. At the same time, electronic tunneling transport measurements have been proved to be a powerful technique in the study of 2D magnetism. Here we review the electronic tunneling transports in magnetic 2D crystals, especially the detection of the phase boundaries of 2D magnets, focusing on two-material systems, i.e. chromium halides and manganese phosphorus trisulfides. In addition, the magnetic van der Waals Josephson junctions and the spin valve devices based on the 2D magnetic metals are applied to probe 2D magnetism as well. Finally, we discuss the current challenges and perspectives of potential applications of 2D van der Waals magnetic materials.
