Abstract:In this work, ultrahigh strength and high modulus densified maize straws were fabricated based on natural maize straws by the chemical treatment combined with hot pressing to satisfy the needs of industry and promote the utilization of maize straws. The analysis of the ATR-FTIR, XRD, TGA, and chemical composition characterization indicated that chemical treatment removed part of lignin and hemicellulose but kept cellulose as much as possible. Surface morphologies from SEM images suggested that the hot pressing partly eliminated the defects of the material and increased the amount of loading fibers per unit volume, constructing materials with more densified microstructures. Through utilizing this method, the tensile strength (598.6 MPa), elongation at break (6.2%), Young's modulus (16.6 GPa), and specific strength (434 MPa g−1 cm3) of the densified maize straws were greatly enhanced compared with the natural maize straws. Therefore, the high-performance densified maize straws with chopped fibers were successfully composited with the biodegradable poly (propylene carbonate), predicting a huge application prospect in automobile, construction, furniture, and even airplane fields.Graphic abstract
