Abstract:Based on the technique of periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide, up-conversion single-photon detection at 1.064-μm is demonstrated. We have achieved a system photon detection efficiency of 32.5% with a very low noise count rate of 45 counts per second by pumping with a 1.55-μm-band single frequency laser using the long-wavelength pumping technique and exploiting volume Bragg grating as a narrow band filter. Replacing the volume Bragg grating with a combination of adequate dielectric filters, a detection efficiency of up to 38% with a noise count rate of 700 counts per second is achieved, making the overall system stable and practical. The up-conversion single-photon detector operating at 1.064 μm can be a promising robust counter and find usage in many fields.

Abstract:The rapid development of single-photon detection technology offers the possibility for an imaging system to go beyond traditional limits. Recently, single-photon imagers based on the upconversion technique have achieved unprecedentedly high resolution and noise tolerance in 3-D imaging. Nevertheless, the limited imaging range, complicated optical path, and long data acquisition time impose remaining challenges to practical applications. In this work, we build an upconversion single-photon imager for full-range and accurate 3-D imaging. A compact all-fiber design allows our system to work robustly in an open environment. Compared to the previous imagers, the imaging speed is increased by three orders of magnitude due to the high upconversion efficiency and photon-efficient algorithm. With the application of a high-repetition laser and a nanosecond optical delay line (ODL), we achieve full-range imaging under the upconversion scheme against high solar background noise. For close-up scenes, our imager achieves ultrahigh axial resolution up to 20 mu m, which is not affected by the time jitter or pileup effect of the single-photon detector. Our proposal can stimulate practical applications in sophisticated scenarios.

Abstract:We propose a polarization-independent up-conversion protocol for single-photon detection at telecom band with a single thin-film periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide. By choosing the proper waveguide parameters, the waveguide dispersion can compensate the crystal birefringence so that quasi-phase-matching conditions for transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes can be simultaneously fulfilled with single poling period. With this scheme, randomly-polarized single photons at 1550 nm can be up-converted with a normalized conversion efficiency of 163.8%/W cm2.

Abstract:High-performance single-photon detectors (SPDs) at 1550-nm band are critical for fiber-based quantum communications. Among many types of SPDs, the up-conversion SPDs based on periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides are of great interest. Combined with a strong pump laser, the telecom single-photons are converted into short wavelength ones and detected by silicon-based SPDs. However, due to the difficulty of precise controlling waveguide profile, the direct coupling between a single-mode fiber and the waveguide is not efficient. Here by utilizing fiber taper with proper diameter, optimal mode-matching is achieved and coupling efficiency up to 93% is measured. With an optimized design, a system detection efficiency of 36% and noise counting rate of 90 cps are realized. The maximum detection efficiency is characterized as 40% with a noise counting rate of 200 cps. Numerical simulation results indicate that our device can significantly improve the performance of QKD and extend the communication distance longer than 200 km.

Abstract:We have demonstrated upconversion detection at the single photon level in the 2 um spectral window using a pump wavelength near 1550nm, a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide, and a volume Bragg grating (VBG) to reduce noise. We achieve a system photon detection efficiency of 10%, with a noise count rate of 24,500 counts per second, competitive with other 2 um single photon detection technologies. This detector has potential applications in environmental gas monitoring, life science, and classical and quantum communication.

Abstract:We demonstrate up-conversion single-photon detectors based on integrated periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides, which incorporate two mode filters and a directional coupler. The two mode filters are optimized for the fiber-waveguide coupling efficiencies for 1550 nm and 1950 nm respectively while the directional coupler plays the role of wavelength combiner, making the overall system portable and low-cost. The two wavelengths pump each other in our detection system. We achieve detection efficiencies of 28% for 1550 nm and 27% for 1950 nm, respectively. This scheme provides an efficient integrated single-photon detection method for any two well-separated spectral bands in the whole low-loss range of lithium niobate waveguides.

Abstract:We studied numerically and experimentally the effects of structural disorder on the performance of ultraviolet photonic crystal slab lasers. Optical gain selectively amplifies the high-quality modes of the passive system. For these modes, the in-plane and out-of-plane leakage rates may be automatically balanced in the presence of disorder. The spontaneous optimization of in-plane and out-of-plane confinement of light in a photonic crystal slab may lead to a reduction of the lasing threshold.

Abstract:We demonstrate upconversion-assisted single-photon detection for the 1.55-μm telecommunications band based on a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide pumped by a monolithic PPLN optical parametric oscillator. We achieve an internal conversion efficiency of 86%, which results in an overall system detection efficiency of 37%, with excess noise as low as 10(3) counts s(-1). We measure the dark count rate versus the upconversion pump-signal frequency separation and find the results to be consistent with noise photon generation by spontaneous anti-Stokes Raman scattering. These results enable detailed design guidelines for the development of low-noise quantum frequency conversion systems, which will be an important component of fiber-optic quantum networks.

Abstract:We combine parametric frequency upconversion with single-photon counting technology to achieve detection sensitivity down to the terahertz (THz) single-photon level. Our relatively simple detection scheme employs a near-infrared ultrafast source, a GaP nonlinear crystal, optical filters, and a single photon avalanche diode. This configuration is capable of detecting a weak THz signal with an energy of 590 zJ contained within a single pulse. Through averaging over 50k data points, the configuration can resolve a 0.5 zJ pulse energy, corresponding to an average of 0.5 photon per pulse. The corresponding noise-equivalent power and THz-to-NIR photon detection efficiency are $4.1 \times 10^{-17} W/\sqrt{Hz}$ and 0.19%, respectively. To test our scheme, we perform spectroscopy of water vapor between 1.0 and 3.7 THz and obtain results in agreement with to those acquired with a standard electro-optic sampling (EOS) method. Our technique provides a 0.2 THz spectral resolution offering a fast alternative to EOS THz detection for monitoring specific spectral components in THz spectroscopy, imaging and communications applications.

Abstract:Frequency upconversion for single photons at telecom wavelengths is important to simultaneously meet the different wavelength requirements for long-distance communications and quantum memories in a quantum nodal network. It also enables the detection for the telecom "flying qubit" photons with silicon-based efficient single-photon detectors with low dark count (DC) rates. Here, we demonstrate the frequency upconversion of attenuated single photons, using a low-loss titanium-indiffused periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide, pumped with a readily available erbium-doped fiber amplifier in the L-band. Internal and conversion efficiencies up to 84.4% and 49.9% have been achieved, respectively. The DC rates are suppressed down to 44 kHz at 13.9% end-to-end quantum efficiency (including full conversion and detection), enabled by our long-wavelength pump configuration and narrow 3.5-GHz bandpass filtering.

Abstract:Single photon detector is an essential part of quantum optics and quantum information. We demonstrate up-conversion single-photon detector for the 1550 nm telecommunications band using long-wavelength pump and multimode fiber coupling. We achieve total-system detection efficiency of around 27% with noise as low as 2800 Hz. This method decreases the noise and significantly improves the system stability. What is more, it is very suitable for the practical product of up-conversion single-photon detector.

Abstract:A series superconducting nanowire single-photon detector is a high performance nanowire array detector that has the potential to reach a high system detection efficiency (SQE), a high counting rate (CR) and photon number resolving functionality. Interconnected with a simplified readout, it shows promise for large scale expansion and has good prospects for future applications in single-photon imaging, quantum optics, quantum computing and deep-space communication. In this paper, we demonstrate a high SQE and CR series superconducting nanowire single-photon detector with an active area of 20 x 20 mu m(2). The detector shows a maximum SQE of 68% at 1550 nm with a dark count rate of 200 Hz and a wide response wavelength from 1100-2000 nm. It also achieves a CR over 300 MHz at single photon power level and has the capability of resolving photon numbers by up to six photons.

Abstract:The quantum efficiency of photon counters can be measured with standard uncertainty below 1% level using correlated photon pairs generated through spontaneous parametric down-conversion process. Normally a laser in UV, blue or green wavelength range with sufficient photon energy is applied to produce energy and momentum conserved photon pairs in two channels with desired wavelengths for calibration. One channel is used as the heralding trigger, and the other is used for the calibration of the detector under test. A superconducting nanowire single photon detector with advantages such as high photon counting speed (>20 MHz), low dark count rate (<50 counts per second), and wideband responsivity (UV to near infrared) is used as the trigger detector, enabling correlated photons calibration capabilities into shortwave visible range. For a 355nm single longitudinal mode pump laser, when a superconducting nanowire single photon detector is used as the trigger detector at 1064nm and 1560nm in the near infrared range, the photon counting efficiency calibration capabilities can be realized at 532nm and 460nm. The quantum efficiency measurement on photon counters such as photomultiplier tubes and avalanche photodiodes can be then further extended in a wide wavelength range (e.g. 400-1000nm) using a flat spectral photon flux source to meet the calibration demands in cutting edge low light applications such as time resolved fluorescence and nonlinear optical spectroscopy, super resolution microscopy, deep space observation, and so on.

Abstract:Coincidence detection of single photons is crucial in numerous quantum technologies and usually requires multiple time-resolved single-photon detectors. However, the electronic readout becomes a major challenge when the measurement basis scales to large numbers of spatial modes. Here, we address this problem by introducing a two-terminal coincidence detector that enables scalable readout of an array of detector segments based on superconducting nanowire microstrip transmission line. Exploiting timing logic, we demonstrate a 16-element detector that resolves all 136 possible single-photon and two-photon coincidence events. We further explore the pulse shapes of the detector output and resolve up to four-photon coincidence events in a 4-element device, giving the detector photon-number-resolving capability. This new detector architecture and operating scheme will be particularly useful for multi-photon coincidence detection in large-scale photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:The conversion and interaction between quantum signals at a single-photon level are essential for scalable quantum photonic information technology. Using a fully-optimized, periodically-poled lithium niobate microring, we demonstrate ultra-efficient sum-frequency generation on chip. The external quantum efficiency reaches $(65\pm3)\%$ with only $(104\pm4)$ $\mu$W pump power, improving the state-of-the-art by over one order of magnitude. At the peak conversion, $3\times10^{-5}$ noise photon is created during the cavity lifetime, which meets the requirement of quantum applications using single-photon pulses. Using pump and signal in single-photon coherent states, we directly measure the conversion probability produced by a single pump photon to be $10^{-5}$ -- breaking the record by 100 times -- and the photon-photon coupling strength to be 9.1 MHz. Our results mark a new milestone toward quantum nonlinear optics at the ultimate single photon limit, creating new background in highly integrated photonics and quantum optical computing.

Abstract:Photon triplet generation based on third-order spontaneous parametric down-conversion remains as an experimental challenge. The challenge stems from the trade-offs between source brightness and instrument noise. This work presents a probability theory of coincidence detection to address the detection limit in source characterization. We use Bayes' theorem to model instruments as a noisy communication channel and apply statistical inference to identify the minimum detectable coincidence rate. A triplet generation rate of 1-100 Hz is required for source characterization performed over 1-72 hours using superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors.

Abstract:Halofluorescein derivatives were found to exhibit one-photon absorption upconversion (oPUC) at ∼585 nm under the excitation of 655 nm diode laser (∼1.0 W⋅cm−2); on the other hand, they can induce emitter 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA) to emit triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) at ∼430 nm under the excitation of 532 nm diode laser (∼0.5 W⋅cm−2). Inspired by such unique feature, a turn-on upconversion (UC) chemsensor (i.e, halofluorescein thiospirolactone) was synthesized to develop dual-channel ion detection. The results have shown that the limit of detection (LOD) to Hg2+ can be as low as nanomolar concentration (1.4 nM) based on the TTA-UC probing, while the upper detection limit to Hg2+ can reach as high as millimolar concentration range (0.5 mM) based on the oPUC probing. The importance in this work may provide a new strategy that the high concentration probing with the low detection limit can be realized by one probe, based on simultaneously using the oPUC and TTA-UC detection methods.

Abstract:We demonstrate upconversion single-photon detection for the 1550-nm band using a PPLN waveguide, long-wavelength pump, and narrowband filtering using a volume Bragg grating. We achieve total-system detection efficiency of around 30% with noise at the dark-count level of a silicon APD. Based on the new detector, a single-pixel up-conversion infrared spectrometer with a noise equivalent power of -142 dBm was demonstrated, which was better than liquid nitrogen cooled InGaAs arrary.
