Abstract:An optical imaging method based on Rayleigh scattering is introduced to study the spatial distribution of atomic argon clusters produced in a gas jet. The radial distribution and evolution of the clusters are captured directly by a high speed camera, resulting in greatly increased precision and accuracy. It is found that the radial distribution of the clusters follows a Gaussian curve rather than the double-humped curve observed in a previous experiment. The normalized radial and axial distributions of the clusters are not influenced by the stagnation pressure and may be strictly determined by the nozzle structure. The average cluster sizes decrease slightly at far axial distances. A method of estimating the half-angle of the nozzle is also presented.

Abstract:An investigation of atmospheric pressure helium plasma jets emerging into ambient air and helium was carried out with the aim of shedding light on the mechanism for the formation of extended plasma plumes. By electron multiplying charge coupled device imaging, it is shown that the geometrical shape of the jet in ambient helium is not an arrow-like shape as that in ambient air, but a diffusive one. In ambient helium, the jet length increased continuously with the applied voltage. For ambient air, the jet length was determined by both the helium flow rate and the applied voltage. In addition, the N-2 (C-B) band and the N-2(+) lines dominate the emission spectra of the jet in ambient air. The Penning ionization between metastable He atoms and N-2 molecular may be the main source of N-2(+).

Abstract:Interplay of discharge and gas flow in the atmospheric pressure plasma jets generated with three different discharge modes [N. Jiang, A. L. Ji, and Z. X. Cao, J. Appl. Phys. 106, 013308 (2009); N. Jiang, A. L. Ji, and Z. X. Cao, J. Appl. Phys. 108, 033302 (2010)] has been investigated by simultaneous photographing of both plasma plumes and gas flows in the ambient, with the former being visualized by using an optical schlieren system. Gas flow gains a forward momentum from discharge except for the case of overflow jets at smaller applied voltages. Larger applied voltage implies an elongated plasma jet only for single-electrode mode; for dielectric barrier discharge jet the plume length maximizes at a properly applied voltage. These findings can help understand the underlying processes, and are useful particularly for the economic operation of tiny helium plasma jets and jet arrays.

Abstract:The gas-liquid flow structure and interfacial behavior of submerged air jets were investigated experimentally using high speed digital video camera and image processing techniques. The jet pressure ratio varied from 1.8 to 4.8 in the experiment. And results from different jet nozzles were processed and compared. Statistical characteristics of the jet diameters along the axial distance were obtained and analyzed. Time series analysis was implemented to study the interface unsteadiness by calculating the gas-liquid interface deviation. The results showed that the jet diameters increase first linearly then nonlinearly and its growth rate decreases along the axial distance. The reason for the divergence between the result of this experiment and those done by other researchers was analyzed. Comparing the results of different pressure ratios and nozzle diameters, we found that larger jet pressure ratios have larger jet diameters and nozzle diameters nearly have no bearing on the distribution of dimensionless jet diameters. The interface unsteadiness in low and high pressure ratios exhibited totally distinct properties. And a minimum unsteady value was found along the axis of the air jets.

Abstract:This work describes an optical device for the simultaneous recording of shadowgrams and schlieren images, and some results are presented concerning its applications to the study of plasma assisted flow control in airfoil models. This approach offers many advantages in comparison to other methods, specially because the use of tracer particles (like smoke in wind tunnels) is not required for the experiments, thus avoiding contaminations in the electric discharges or air flows. Besides, while schlieren images reveal the refractive index gradients in the area of study, shadowgrams detect the second order spatial derivatives of the refractive indexes. Therefore, the simultaneous recording of these different images may give interesting information about the phenomena under study. In this paper, these images were used to confirm the existence of vortex structures in the flow induced by corona discharges on airfoil models. These structures are a possible explanation for the effects of drag reduction and lift force increasing, which have been reported in experiments of plasma assisted Aerodynamics.

Abstract:In this study, the electrical discharge characteristics of an atmospheric-pressure helium plasma jet using radio-frequency power supply are investigated by measuring the electrical parameters (voltage, current, power, and phase angle). The plasma parameters (electron temperature and electron density) are estimated on the basis of the electrical experiment data using the equivalent circuit model and the power balance equation. By varying input power, a “phase saturation” region is identified. The optimized flow rate ratio between oxygen and helium is found to be 0.1/40 slpm in the experiment.

Abstract:Plasma medicine is an emerging research field which has been driven by the development of plasma sources suitable to generate low temperature plasmas. In many cases, such devices can operate without a gas flow, producing a plasma discharge from the ambient air. However, the most common case is the use of a working gas at a given flow rate to produce a plasma jet. Helium (He) is one of the gases commonly used as the carrier gas to generate cold atmospheric pressure plasma jets (CAPPJs) due mainly to the easiness to ignite a gas discharge with it. However, in this work it was observed that most of the heating of a He CAPPJ can come just from the expansion of the He gas. This was found through measurements of gas temperature (T gas ), using fiber optic temperature (FOT) sensors, and thermal output, using both FOT and infrared imaging with the He flow impinging on a copper (Cu) plate. Such findings were achieved through comparisons of T gas and the temperature on the Cu (T Cu ) plate in the conditions with and without discharge ignition, as well as comparing T gas in the free gas/jet mode with and without discharge ignition. It was verified that the T gas values increased as the distance from the gas outlet was enlarged, especially at low He flow rates, even without discharge ignition. Despite the temperature increase with distance, it is possible to produce plasma jets with temperatures lower than 40 °C at low He flow rates.

Abstract:Diagnostic of spatiotemporal distribution of the electron density and temperature of atmospheric pressure plasma jets is a difficult task, as Thomson scattering, which is the most used measurement, suffers from the stray light induced by Rayleigh scattering. In this paper, a new strategy is reported to restrain the stray light in Thomson scattering. With a physical mask placed at the output of a single spectrometer, the scattering signal is obtained with a relatively high ratio of signal to noise. The electron density in a pulsed kHz-driven atmospheric plasma jet interacting with a dielectric target is measured by using this method. A donut-shaped distribution of electron density is observed at an axial position 1 mm away from the nozzle. The radius of the ring structure decreases with the reduction of the gas flow rate. The electron density reaches a maximum of about 4.5 × 1020 m−3 at a delay time of 150 ns from the onset of the pulse. A similar time relationship between the electron density and plasma emission intensity is also identified. Higher applied voltage leads to a faster increasing and a higher peak value of the electron density. Pulse width shows little impact on the generation and decay of electrons.

Abstract:Discharge characteristics of helium and argon planar plasma jets, impinging on a dielectric substrate in the ambient air, were comparatively investigated by high-speed photographs and electrical measurements. The helium plasma jet formed a luminous layer close to the dielectric surface and maintained homogenous in the transverse direction. The argon plasma jet propagated through a localized channel of ~1-mm diameter and spread on the substrate surface. Experimental results show that helium and argon plasma jets are glow-like and filament-like discharges, respectively.

Abstract:Atmospheric pressure plasma jets, generated in a coaxial dielectric barrier discharge configuration, have been investigated with different flowing gases. Discharge patterns in different tube regions were compared in the flowing gases of helium, neon and krypton. To explain the difference of these discharge patterns, a theoretical analysis is presented to reveal the possible basic processes. A comparison of experimental and theoretical results identifies that Penning ionization is mainly responsible for the discharge patterns of helium and neon plasma jets.

Abstract:The energy balance of a plasma holds fundamental information not only about basic plasma physics, but it is also important for tailoring plasmas to specific applications. Especially RF-driven atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJs) operated in helium with oxygen admixture have high application potential in industry and medicine. Many types of plasma jets have been studied up to now, leading to the challenge how to compare results from various sources. We have developed a method for measuring the power deposited in the plasma as the parameter to compare different sources and gas mixtures with each other. Furthermore, we studied energy transport as a function of this input power and molecular gas admixture in a newly developed APPJ based on the COST-reference jet with a capillary as a dielectric in between the electrodes. The gas temperature, atomic oxygen density, ozone density and absolute emission intensity in the visible wavelength range have been determined. Combining the results gave an energy balance with most of the energy deposited into gas heating. Production of final chemical products made up a small amount of the deposited power while radiation was negligible for all combinations of external parameters studied.

Experimental Study of Coherent Structures in Planar Jets and Planar Jet Flames

Abstract:The instantaneous flow images of the large scale coherent structures in turbulent planar jets and turbulent planar jet flames were researched experimentally. A He Ne gas laser was used for the flow visualization with a half cylinder lens used to form a luminous sheet. The flow visualization results of smoke seeded flows show the behavior of the large scale coherent structures in both turbulent planar jets and turbulent planar jet flames. The experimental results also show how laminarization of the flow field occurs under the condition of the jet combustion.

Abstract:In this letter, the streamer propagation in the atmospheric pressure helium plasma jet with afloating electrode nozzle driven by the kHz AC power supply is investigated. The current signal induced by the space charges and the mean propagation velocity of the guided ionization waves are measured by the capacitive probe method in the discharge region. The space charges in the guided ionization waves are found to increase with the applied voltage, which enhances both the electric field near the streamer head and the propagation velocity. The applicability of the streamer mechanism to the propagation of the guided ionization waves is validated by this electrical diagnostic method.

Abstract:It is a useful method to lengthen the cold atmospheric plasma jet with the aid of gas shielding. In this paper, the interactions between the shielding gas and the radio-frequency atmospheric-pressure glow discharge plasma jet are studied numerically and experimentally. The modeling results show that both the chemical compositions and flowrates of the shielding gas strongly influence the characteristics of the plasma jets. A long helium-shielding plasma jet with a length of 34-35 mm is obtained. The predicted lengths of the plasma shielding jets under specified operating conditions are qualitatively consistent with the experimental measurements.

Abstract:Effects of gas flow rate on the length of atmospheric pressure plasma jets have been investigated using a capillary dielectric barrier discharge configuration. For the discharge in only downstream region, three distinguishable modes of plasma jet length versus argon gas flow rate, namely, laminar, transition, and turbulent jet mode, have been identified. For the case of discharge in both downstream and upstream regions, the curve of length versus flow rate has significant “dent” in the laminar jet mode for pure helium, neon, and argon flow gas spraying into air ambient.

Abstract:A two-dimensional axisymmetric fluid model was applied to investigate the influence of N 2 flow velocity on the discharge characteristics of a He plasma jet with a coaxial dual-channel inlet. Helium working gas flowed in the annular space of a coaxial tube and N 2 flowed in a central stainless steel tube powered by a DC voltage. When N 2 flow velocity increases from 0 m/s, the jet appears to be stratified, forming the outer side and inner side of the jet, and the electron density on the outside of the jet is much higher than that on the inside. For different N 2 flow velocities, the peak densities of He + and N 2 (c 3 π) appear in the jet head, while the peak densities of He* and N 2 + both appear at the dielectric nozzle and the jet head. When N 2 flow velocity is low, the Penning ionization rate is lower than the electron impact ionization rate, but when N 2 flow velocity is high, it is just the opposite, which can increase the concentration of reactive species and contribute to the practical application of the jet. N 2 flow velocity not only changes the length and structure of the jet but also controls the uniformity of the distribution of reactive species in the jet, which indicates that there is an optimal N 2 flow velocity to make the jet longer and more uniform in space, which will greatly promote the practicality and flexibility of the plasma jet and also provide meaningful insights for optimizing and controlling the characteristics of the plasma jet.

Characterization of Supersonic Jet and Shock Wave with High-Resolution Quantitative Schlieren Imaging

Abstract:This paper presents an enhanced optical configuration for a single-pass quantitative Schlieren imaging system that achieves an optical resolution of approximately 4.6 micrometers. The modified setup decouples sensitivity from resolution, enabling independent optimization of these critical parameters. Using this high-resolution system, we conduct quantitative analyses of supersonic jets emitted from sub-millimeter nozzles into the atmosphere and investigate shock waves induced by knife blades interacting with these jets in a vacuum environment. The fine resolution allows for detailed visualization of shock wave structures and accurate measurement of density gradients. We demonstrate the system's effectiveness by examining the density gradient profile along the shock diamonds and mapping density profiles across shock waves. These density profiles are analyzed for their relevance in laser-plasma applications, including laser wakefield acceleration and the Analog Black Hole Evaporation via Laser (AnaBHEL) experiment. Our findings indicate that this system can help determine key parameters such as peak density, plateau length, and shock wave thickness-essential for optimizing electron acceleration and achieving specific plasma density profiles. This high-resolution quantitative Schlieren imaging technique thus serves as a valuable tool for exploring complex fluid dynamics and supporting advancements in laser-plasma physics research.

Abstract:A quantitative interpretation of the schlieren technique applied to a non-thermal atmospheric-pressure oxygen plasma jet driven at low-frequency (50 Hz) is reported. The jet was operated in the turbulent regime with a hole-diameter based Reynolds number of 13,800. The technique coupled to a simplified kinetic model of the jet effluent region allowed deriving the temporally-averaged values of the gas temperature of the jet by processing the gray-level contrast values of digital schlieren images. The penetration of the ambient air into the jet due to turbulent diffusion was taken into account. The calibration of the optical system was obtained by fitting the sensitivity parameter so that the oxygen fraction at the nozzle exit was unity. The radial profiles of the contrast in the discharge off case were quite symmetric on the whole outflow, but with the discharge on, relatively strong departures from the symmetry were evident in the near field. The time-averaged gas temperature of the jet was relatively high, with a maximum departure of about 55 K from the room temperature; as can be expected owing to the operating molecular gas. The uncertainty in the temperature measurements was within 6 K, primarily derived from errors associated to the Abel inversion procedure. The results showed an increase in the gas temperature of about 8 K close to the nozzle exit; thus suggesting that some fast-gas heating (with a heating rate ~0.3 K/μs) still occurs in the near field of the outflow.

Abstract:In this paper, dynamic characterizations of the turbulent flow field in atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJs) are investigated by focusing on the effect of different APPJ parameters, such as gas flow rate, applied voltage, pulse repetition frequency, and time duration of the pulse. We utilize Schlieren photography and photomultiplier tubes (PMT) as a signal triggering of an intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) and also a high speed camera to examine the formation of the turbulent front and its dynamics. The results reveal that the turbulent front will appear earlier and closer to the tube nozzle by increasing the gas flow rate or the applied voltage amplitude. However, the pulse time duration and repetition frequency cannot change the dynamics and formation of the turbulent front. Further investigation shows that every pulse can excite one turbulent front which is created in a specific position in a laminar region and propagates downstream. It seems that the dominating mechanisms responsible for the formation of turbulent fronts in plasma jets might not be ion momentum transfer.
Schlieren and BOS velocimetry of a round turbulent helium jet in air

Abstract:Seedless velocimetry is gaining interest in many industrial and research applications. We report on a comparative study of time-resolved optical velocimetry using traditional, mirror-type knife-edge schlieren optics versus Background-Oriented Schlieren (BOS) of subsonic round turbulent helium jets in air at Red = 5,890 and 11,300. Digital images with 1024 pixels streamwise resolution (0 < x/d < 200) were captured at 6000 frames/s in large ensembles. Velocimetry was performed on these results by digital image correlation (DIC) using OpenPIV software, and by streak-schlieren analysis of x-t diagrams (kymography). Limited PIV data were also collected for verification of the schlieren velocimetry results. Both BOS and traditional schlieren show partial success in measuring the mean-flow helium jet self-similarity in terms of the 1/x decay of centerline velocity, Gaussian-shaped radial velocity profiles, and linear spreading rate of the jet. Visualized turbulent eddies, used as tracers in schlieren velocimetry, are observed to last longer than is necessary for this purpose in the present helium jets. Also, the measured convective velocity appears to be sufficiently robust to sum to the jet mean velocity in some of the results. Kymography yields better overall results than DIC, which we attribute to kymography's spatiotemporal "spectrum" of jet velocities, enabling the discrimination of fast eddies near the jet centerline from slower ones near the jet periphery. DIC and other analysis methods suffer from a path-averaging bias which negatively affects the results. The reduction of kymographic data for velocimetry was done manually and also by a Fourier-transform image-feature-orientation code, both yielding equivalent results.
