Abstract:A fundamental theorem of Liouville asserts that positive entire harmonic functions in Euclidean spaces must be constant. A remarkable Liouville-type theorem of Caffarelli-Gidas-Spruck states that positive entire solutions of $-\Delta u=u^{ {(n+2)}/{(n-2)} }$, $n\ge 3$, are unique modulo Möbius transformations. Far-reaching extensions were established for general fully nonlinear conformally invariant equations through the works of Chang-Gursky-Yang, Li-Li, Li, and Viaclovsky. In this paper, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the validity of such Liouville-type theorems. This leads to necessary and sufficient conditions for local gradient estimates of solutions to hold, assuming a one-sided bound on the solutions, for a wide class of fully nonlinear elliptic equations involving Schouten tensors. A pivotal advancement in proving these Liouville-type theorems is our enhanced understanding of solutions to such equations near isolated singularities. In particular, we utilize earlier results of Caffarelli-Li-Nirenberg on lower- and upper-conical singularities. For general conformally invariant fully nonlinear elliptic equations, we prove that a viscosity super- (sub-)solution can be extended across an isolated singularity if and only if it is a lower- (upper-)conical singularity. We also provide necessary and sufficient conditions for lower- (upper-)conical behavior of a function near isolated singularities in terms of its conformal Hessian. As an application of our Liouville theorems and local gradient estimates, we establish new existence and compactness results for conformal metrics on a closed Riemannian manifold with prescribed symmetric functions of the Schouten (Ricci) tensor, allowing the scalar curvature of the conformal metrics to have varying signs.

The Beurling and Malliavin Theorem in Several Dimensions

Abstract:The present paper is devoted to a new multidimensional generalization of the Beurling and Malliavin Theorem, which is a classical result in the Uncertainty Principle in Fourier Analysis. In more detail, we establish by an elegant but simple new method a sufficient condition for a radial function to be a Beurling and Malliavin majorant in several dimensions (this means that the function in question can be minorized by the modulus of a square integrable function which is not zero identically and which has the support of the Fourier transform included in an arbitrary small ball). As a corollary of the radial case, we also get a new sharp sufficient condition in the nonradial case. The latter result provides an answer to a question posed by L. Hörmander. Our proof is different in the cases of odd and even dimensions. In the even dimensional case we make use of one classical formula from the theory of Bessel functions due to N. Ya. Sonin.

Abstract:The Liouville map, introduced by Bonahon, assigns to each point in the Teichmüller space a natural Radon measure on the space of geodesics of the base surface. The Liouville map is real analytic and it even extends to a holomorphic map of a neighborhood of the Teichmüller space in the Quasi-Fuchsian space of an arbitrary conformally hyperbolic Riemann surface. The earthquake paths and by their extension quake-bends, introduced by Thurston, are particularly nice real-analytic and holomorphic paths in the Teichmüller and the Quasi-Fuchsian space, respectively. We find a geometric expression for the derivative of the Liouville map along earthquake paths.

Abstract:When the domain is a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Bakry--Emery Ricci curvature and the target is a complete Riemannian manifold with sectional curvature bounded above by a positive constant, by carrying out refined gradient estimates, we obtain a better Liouville theorem for ancient solutions to the V-harmonic map heat flows. Furthermore, we can also derive a Liouville theorem for quasi-harmonic maps under an exponential growth condition.

Abstract:We prove several Liouville theorems for F -harmonic maps from some complete Riemannian manifolds by assuming some conditions on the Hessian of the distance function, the degrees of F ( t ) and the asymptotic behavior of the maps at infinity. In particular, the results can be applied to F -harmonic maps from some pinched manifolds, and can deduce a Bernstein type result for an entire minimal graph.

Abstract:In this paper, we first study the dual fractional parabolic equation \begin{equation*} \partial^\alpha_t u(x,t)+(-\Delta)^s u(x,t) = f(u(x,t))\ \ \mbox{in}\ \ B_1(0)\times\R , \end{equation*} subject to the vanishing exterior condition. We show that for each $t\in\R$, the positive bounded solution $u(\cdot,t)$ must be radially symmetric and strictly decreasing about the origin in the unit ball in $\R^n$. To overcome the challenges caused by the dual non-locality of the operator $\partial^\alpha_t+(-\Delta)^s$, some novel techniques were introduced. Then we establish the Liouville theorem for the homogeneous equation in the whole space \begin{equation*}\label{B} \partial^\alpha_t u(x,t)+(-\Delta)^s u(x,t) = 0\ \ \mbox{in}\ \ \R^n\times\R . \end{equation*} We first prove a maximum principle in unbounded domains for anti-symmetric functions to deduce that $u(x,t)$ must be constant with respect to $x.$ Then it suffices for us to establish the Liouville theorem for the Marchaud fractional equation \begin{equation*} \partial^\alpha_t u(t) = 0\ \ \mbox{in}\ \ \R . \end{equation*} To circumvent the difficulties arising from the nonlocal and one-sided nature of the operator $\partial_t^\alpha$, we bring in some new ideas and simpler approaches. Instead of disturbing the anti-symmetric function, we employ a perturbation technique directly on the solution $u(t)$ itself. This method provides a more concise and intuitive route to establish the Liouville theorem for one-sided operators $\partial_t^\alpha$, including even more general Marchaud time derivatives.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the ideas of certain notions that one studies in thermodynamic formalism of maps to the context when the dynamics in the phase space evolves by complex holomorphic correspondences. Towards that end, we define the topological entropy of holomorphic correspondences using spanning sets. We then, define the pressure of a real-valued continuous function defined on the Riemann sphere and investigate the Ruelle operator with respect to the Hölder continuous function, however restricted on the support of the Dinh-Sibony measure.

Abstract:Let $V$ be a $C^1$-vector field on an $n$-dimensional complete Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$. We prove a Liouville theorem for $V$-harmonic maps satisfying various growth conditions from complete Riemannian manifolds with non-negative $(m, V)$-Ricci curvature for $m\in\,[\,-\infty,\,0\,]\,\cup\,[\,n,\,+\infty\,]$ into Cartan-Hadam\-ard manifolds, which extends Cheng's Liouville theorem proved S.~Y.~Cheng for sublinear growth harmonic maps from complete Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature into Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. We also prove a Liouville theorem for $V$-harmonic maps from complete Riemannian manifolds with non-negative $(m, V)$-Ricci curvature for $m\in\,[\,-\infty,\,0\,]\,\cup\,[\,n,\,+\infty\,]$ into regular geodesic balls of Riemannian manifolds with positive upper sectional curvature bound, which extends the results of Hildebrandt-Jost-Wideman and Choi. Our probabilistic proof of Liouville theorem for several growth $V$-harmonic maps into Hadamard manifolds enhances an incomplete argument by Stafford. Our results extend the results due to Chen-Jost-Qiu\cite{ChenJostQiu} and Qiu\cite{Qiu} in the case of $m=+\infty$ on the Liouville theorem for bounded $V$-harmonic maps from complete Riemannian manifolds with non-negative $(\infty, V)$-Ricci curvature into regular geodesic balls of Riemannian manifolds with positive sectional curvature upper bound. Finally, we establish a connection between the Liouville property of $V$-harmonic maps and the recurrence property of $\Delta_V$-diffusion processes on manifolds. Our results are new even in the case $V=\nabla f$ for $f\in C^2(M)$.

Abstract:Let $(X,d,\mu)$ be a metric measure space satisfying a doubling property with the upper/lower dimension $Q\ge n>1$, and admitting an $L^2$-Poincaré inequality. In this article, we establish the Hölder continuity and a Liouville-type theorem for the (elliptic-type) Schrödinger equation $$\mathbb L u(x,t)=-\partial^2_{t}u(x,t)+\mathcal L u(x,t)+V(x)u(x,t)=0,\quad x\in X,\, t\in\mathbb R, $$ where $\mathcal L$ is a non-negative operator generated by a Dirichlet form on $X$, and the non-negative potential $V$ is a Muckenhoupt weight belonging to the reverse Hölder class ${RH}_q(X)$ for some $q>\max\{Q/2,1\}$. Note that $Q/2$ is critical for the regularity theory of $-\Delta+V$ on $\mathbb{R}^Q$ ($Q\ge3$) by Shen's work in 1995, which hints the critical index of $V$ for the regularity results above on $X\times \mathbb R$ may be $(Q+1)/2$. Our results show that this critical index is in fact $\max\{Q/2,1\}$. Our approach primarily relies on the controllable growth of $V$ and the elliptic theory for the operator $\mathbb L$/$-\partial^2_{t}+\mathcal{L}$ on $X\times \mathbb R$, rather than the analogs for $\mathcal L+V$/$\mathcal{L}$ on $X$, under the critical index setting. As applications, we further obtain some characterizations for solutions to the Schrödinger equation $-\partial^2_{t}u+\mathcal L u+Vu=0$ in $X\times \mathbb R_+$ with boundary values in BMO/CMO/Morrey spaces related to $V$, improving previous results to the critical index $q>\max\{Q/2,1\}$.

Abstract:The Borg-Levinson theorem describes that two spectra of the Sturm-Liouville operator uniquely determines the potential in the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue inverse problem.In this paper,by using the Liouville theorem of entire functions and estimating asymptotic behavior of the elementary solutions of the Srurm-Liouville equation as the spectral parameter approaches to infinity,a simple proof is provided for the Borg-Levinson theorem.The equivalence relationship among two spectra,the Weyl-Titchmarsh m-function and spectral function is also established.

Abstract:In terms of the coherent state evolution in phase space, we present a quantum mechanical version of the classical Liouville theorem. The evolution of the coherent state from |z〉 to |sz − rz*〉 corresponds to the motion from a point z (q,p) to another point sz − rz* with |s|2 − |r|2 = 1. The evolution is governed by the so-called Fresnel operator U(s,r) that was recently proposed in quantum optics theory, which classically corresponds to the matrix optics law and the optical Fresnel transformation, and obeys group product rules. In other words, we can recapitulate the Liouville theorem in the context of quantum mechanics by virtue of coherent state evolution in phase space, which seems to be a combination of quantum statistics and quantum optics.
