Comparative Analysis of CO2 Tracer Gas Methods for the Measurement of Air Change Rates in Student Dormitory Rooms with Open/closed Window Statuses

Abstract:The air change rate per hour (ACH), a key indicator of indoor air quality and building energy consumption, is measured by various CO2 tracer gas methods, including the build-up, steady-state, and decay methods. However, comparative and uncertainty analyses of these methods for ACH measurement under natural ventilation conditions are lacking. In this study, three CO2 tracer gas methods were applied to measure ACH in 49 dormitory rooms in Nanjing during the winter in 2018-2020. The contributions of indoor and outdoor CO2 concentrations, room volume, and human CO2 generation to the uncertainties of ACH measurements by different methods were analyzed. There were no significant differences in ACH among the build-up, steady-state, and decay methods when the human CO2 generation rate was calculated using the equation proposed by Qi et al. (2014). The mean relative standard uncertainties of the ACH determined by the build-up, steady-state, and decay methods were 68%, 38%, and 29%, respectively. The human CO2 generation rate was the largest contributor to uncertainty by the build-up and steady-state methods, whereas the outdoor CO2 concentration was the largest contributor by the decay method. The ACH under both closed and open window statuses collected from 81 and 85 dormitory rooms was lognormally distributed and ranged from 0.09 h-1 to 2.16 h-1 (mean: 0.46 h-1) and 0.45 h-1 to 16.28 h-1 (mean: 4.70 h-1), respectively. This study provides a basis for the selection of suitable methods to measure the ACH under natural ventilation.
