One technique for shield tail brushes' repair using liquid nitrogen freezing method in the artesian aquifer

Abstract:The shield tail wire brushes function to seal the shield tail, thus the ground water and synchronized grouting fluid can be avoided from pouring into the tunnel, in case of which, the whole tunnel may be destroyed. While construction of the Qiantang River tunnel, the slurry shield tail wire brushes were damaged, and the ground water and slurry poured into the tunnel. Measures were taken immediately to cut off the ground water and slurry, and then a technique was designed to repair the broken tail wire brushes. After one month's repair work, the shield restarted driving again. Till the whole tunnel was completed, no similar accidents happened. This paper represents the reasons to the invalidation of the tail wire brushes, the technique to shut off the groundwater and repair of the tail wire brushes using liquid nitrogen freezing method in the artesian aquifer under Qiantang River. © 2011 ASCE.
