Abstract:Percutaneous needle insertion is one of the most common minimally invasive surgical procedures. Due to the inclination of the needle tip, the needle deflects when inserted into soft tissue. Predicting the needle bending before surgery and adjusting the planned insertion trajectory accordingly is helpful for surgeons to insert the needle into the lesion position accurately. This study describes a mechanics-based needle deflection model during insertion into soft tissue based on preoperatively acquired needle and soft tissue material properties and geometric features. In this model, the needle is regarded as a cantilever beam, and the energy composition in the puncture procedure is analyzed with the principle of minimum potential energy, then the needle trajectory function coefficients are solved by Rayleigh-Ritz method. To verify the needle deflection model, two gelatins with different stiffness and three needles with different sizes are used, multiple experiments show that the model can accurately predict the needle bending, with accuracy about 1.5mm at the tip.
