Abstract:The interfacial debonding detection of multi-layered strengthened structures (i.e. carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthened steel/concrete beams) has always been an important problem urgent to be solved. Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor is limited to directly perceive the shear strain. How to monitor the interfacial bonding state based on optical fiber sensing technology thus attracts high attention. A smart CFRP-FBG composite has then been developed in this paper. The structural integrity of the composites has been non-destructively checked by ultrasonic testing technique. Theoretical study on the strengthened steel beam has been conducted to establish a relationship between the interfacial shear stress and the normal stress of the CFRP-FBG composites. Loading tests have been performed to check the measurement accuracy of the FBGs in series and the effectiveness of the composites to perceive the interfacial debonding failure. Results indicate that the proposed smart CFRP-FBG composites can accurately identify the interfacial debonding of the multi-layered structures. The degradation process of the interfacial bonding state can be favorably reflected by the variations of strain profiles measured by the FBGs in series in the composites. The proposed method can be used to instruct the concept design of damage detection. The developed CFRP-FBG composites can be adopted to identify the damage and make in-time maintenance in practical engineering.

Abstract:The authors proposed fiber-optic-based damage monitoring of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) bolted joints. Optical fibers were embedded along bolt holes and strain change along the optical fiber induced by internal damage was measured by a Brillouin Optical Correlation Domain Analysis (BOCDA), which is a high spatial resolution distributed strain sensing system. This study began by investigating damage modes of CFRP bolted joints after bearing failure. Effective embedding positions of optical fibers were then proposed and their feasibility was evaluated by finite element analysis simulating the damage propagation in the bolted joint and consequent strain change. Finally, verification tests were conducted using specimens with embedded optical fibers at various positions. It was clearly shown that damage could be detected using residual strain due to fiber-microbuckling (kinking) damage or permanent deformation of neighboring plies. Furthermore, damage size and direction could be estimated from the change in the strain distribution. The system developed is quite useful for a first inspection of large-scale composite structures in aerospace applications.

Abstract:Fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials have been increasingly used for strengthening concrete members. The strengthening performance and structural capacity of FRP reinforced concrete (RC) structures are highly influenced by the interfacial bonding behaviour between FRP and concrete. A reliable technique for debonding detection, especially at its early age, is essential to ensure the strengthening efficacy and avoid premature failure of FRP RC structures. This study develops a stress wave-based sensing approach to quantitatively monitor the debonding process by using surface mounted piezoceramic-based transducers (also called as smart aggregates SAs). The scanning wave signals in swept frequency mode and single frequency mode were utilised in experimental and numerical methods, respectively. Both results showed that when the stress wave propagated through the FRP-concrete interface, the wave energy attenuation increased as the debonding developed. To quantify the debonding level and provide assessment of the interface condition, a wavelet packet-based debonding index was established and its validity was verified by the data retrieved from digital image correlation measurement. The proposed method has potential for fast determination or real-time monitoring of FRP-concrete interfacial debonding for both research and field applications.

Detecting Debonding between Steel Beam and Reinforcing CFRP Plate Using Active Sensing with Removable PZT-Based Transducers

Abstract:Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates are widely used to retrofit or reinforce steel structures, and the debonding damage between the steel structure and the CFRP plate is a typical failure in strengthening steel structures. This paper proposes a new approach to detecting debonding between a steel beam and a reinforcing CFRP plate by using removable lead zirconate titanate (PZT)-based transducers and active sensing. The removable PZT-based transducers are used to implement the active sensing approach, in which one transducer, as an actuator, is used to generate stress wave, and another transducer, as a sensor, is used to detect the stress wave that propagates across the bonding between the steel beam and the reinforcing CFRP plate. The bonding condition significantly influences the received sensor signal, and a wavelet-packet-based energy index (WPEI) is used to quantify the energy of the received signal to evaluate the severity of debonding between the steel beam and the reinforcing CFRP plate. To validate the proposed approach, experimental studies were performed, and two removable PZT-based transducers were designed and fabricated to detect the debonding between a steel beam and the reinforcing CRFP plate. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method in detecting the debonding between a steel beam and the reinforcing CFRP plate using removable PZT-based transducers.

Abstract:When using distributed optical fiber sensors (DOFS) on reinforced concrete structures, a compromise must be achieved between the protection requirements and robustness of the sensor deployment and the accuracy of the measurements both in the uncracked and cracked stages and under loading, unloading and reloading processes. With this in mind the authors have carried out an experiment where polyimide-coated DOFS were installed on two concrete beams, both embedded in the rebar elements and also bonded to the concrete surface. The specimens were subjected to a three-point load test where after cracking, they are unloaded and reloaded again to assess the capability of the sensor when applied to a real loading scenarios in concrete structures. Rayleigh Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry (OFDR) was used as the most suitable technique for crack detection in reinforced concrete elements. To verify the reliability and accuracy of the DOFS measurements, additional strain gauges were also installed at three locations along the rebar. The results show the feasibility of using a thin coated polyimide DOFS directly bonded on the reinforcing bar without the need of indention or mechanization. A proposal for a Spectral Shift Quality (SSQ) threshold is also obtained and proposed for future works when using polyimide-coated DOFS bonded to rebars with cyanoacrylate adhesive.

Monitoring of FRP Strengthened Structures Using a Modified Time of Flight Interferometer

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a modified time of flight fiber optic sensor interferometer that provides global strain information for large-scale FRP strengthened structures with significantly increased strain sensitivity. With the originally continuous signals being reconstructed from the discretely sampled points using a sinc interpolation function, the sensing resolution of the interferometer is demonstrated to be significantly higher than through direct interrogation. To easily embed the FOS in structures and effectively increase the fiber sensing length, a commercially available prefabricated fiber ribbon is used. The results of bending tests of FRP beams with the embedded ribbon demonstrate the increase in strain sensitivity as well as no detectable loss in strength of the FRP plates due to the embedded fiber ribbons. Results from static loading test of a FRP strengthened beam with embedded fiber ribbons show the feasibility of this technique for self-monitoring FRP retrofits.

Abstract:<p>Distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) is increasingly being applied in civil engineering. One recently emerging type of DFOS, Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry (OFDR), offers improved accuracy and resolution. This paper presents an experimental study that investigates the ability of OFDR, implemented using several types of fiber optic cable, to detect concrete cracking and large strain steel deformation. More specifically, the experimental investigation involved six reinforced concrete specimens with different types of optical fiber embedded in both the concrete and rebar. OFDR successfully detected continuous rebar deformation and bond stress through the post yielding range, as well as strain localization indicative of concrete cracking. The type of optical fiber is shown to have a substantial influence on the measured strain response after the onset of nonlinear behavior (i.e., cracking and yielding) and into the large deformation regime where measurement survivability becomes an issue. The higher performing fibers reveal unprecedented detail regarding the interaction between concrete and rebar and demonstrate potential for application in RC structures. Based on these findings, the paper gives practical recommendations for cables with different size and structure.</p>

Abstract:Steel structure reinforced engineering makes extensive use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) plates. Although it happens frequently, the interfacial debonding of CFRP plate-reinforced steel beams has been the main cause of failure in flexural strengthened steel beams, which results in the brittle failure of steel structures. This paper proposes a novel percussion method to locate and quantify the debonding area based on the Welch power spectrum density (PSD) estimate, Mel frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC), and convolutional neural network (CNN). According to our knowledge, this is the first attempt to use the percussion method to identify and measure the debonding defects of steel beams strengthened by CFRP plates. Additionally, this experiment takes into account how percussion instruments affect localization and quantification. To begin with, the debonding location is qualitatively detected using the Welch PSD estimate method. The presented percussion method can successfully and accurately detect the interfacial debonding of CFRP plate-reinforced steel beams, according to repeated results. Subsequently, a novel CNN model is constructed to classify the various debonding areas based on the MFCC feature. In the end, the experimental findings show that the localization and quantification of the hammer types vary only slightly. Overall, the percussion-based approach can offer a fresh line of inquiry into the debonding problem on steel beams reinforced with CFRP plates.

Abstract:The application of reinforced concrete (RC) beam with near-surface mounted (NSM) pre-stressed carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates has been increasingly widespread in civil engineering. However, debonding failure occurs easily in the early loading stage because of the prestress change at the end of CFRP plate. Therefore, it is important to find reliable, convenient and economical technical means to closely monitor the secure bonding between CFRP and concrete. In this paper, an active sensing approach for generating and sensing stress wave by embedded smart aggregates (SAs) is proposed, which provides a guarantee for the secure connection between CFRP and concrete. Two specimens with different non-pre-stressed bond lengths were fabricated in the laboratory. Six SAs were installed at different positions of the structure to monitor the degree of debonding damage during the loading process. The experiments showed that the optimal length of non-pre-stressed CFRP bond section (300 mm) can significantly improve the load characteristics and enhance the service performance of the structure. The theoretical analysis of wavelet packet shows that increasing the length of non-pre-stressed CFRP bond section can slow down the occurrence and propagation of debonding cracks. The debonding crack in the tension end region is earlier than that in the bond end region. The research results reflect that the developed approach can monitor the damage process caused by debonding cracks and provide early warning for the initial damage and the debonding failure.

Abstract:Externally bonded carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) is widely employed for strengthening steel structures. The CFRP-steel bond behaviour is typically conducted using the single-lap joint (SLJ) and double-lap joint (DLJ) shear tests. This study utilizes advanced distributed optical fibre sensors (DOFS) to measure strains in CFRP-steel SLJs and DLJs, with a specific focus on examining the bending effect. An experimental investigation was conducted to verify the appropriate adhesive and fibre coating materials, achieving synergistic deformation between optical fibre sensors and adherends. The strain results reveal that PI-coated fibres bonded with epoxy resin enhance deformation compatibility. The CFRP strain distributions within the joints are accurately measured by DOFS, enabling the calculation of bending strain to assess joint bending effects. The observed strain aligns well with the finite element (FE) predictions. A more significant bending effect is observed in SLJs compared to DLJs, predominantly concentrated at the loaded end. It can be inferred that the SLJs are subjected to mixed-mode I/II loading in shear tests, and the DLJs appears to be mainly influenced by mode II loading. Additionally, the verified FE model demonstrates that the shear strain across the thickness of the adhesive layer exhibits significant variation at the bond ends.

Abstract:Distributed fiber-optic sensing (DFOS) technologies have been used for decades to detect damage in infrastructure. One recent DFOS technology, Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry (OFDR), has attracted attention from the structural engineering community because its high spatial resolution and refined accuracy could enable new monitoring possibilities and new insight regarding the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The current research project explores the ability and potential of OFDR to measure distributed strain in RC structures through laboratory tests on an innovative beam–column connection, in which a partial slot joint was introduced between the beam and the column to control damage. In the test specimen, fiber-optic cables were embedded in both the steel reinforcement and concrete. The specimen was tested under quasi-static cyclic loading with increasing displacement demand at the structural laboratory of the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) Center of UC Berkeley. Different types of fiber-optic cables were embedded both in the concrete and the rebar. The influence of the cable coating and cable position are discussed. The DFOS results are compared with traditional measurements (DIC and LVDT). The high resolution of DFOS at small deformations provides new insights regarding the mechanical behavior of the slotted RC beam–column connection, including direct measurement of beam curvature, rebar deformation, and slot opening and closing. A major contribution of this work is the quantification of the performance and limitations of the DFOS system under large cyclic strains. Performance is quantified in terms of non-valid points (which occur in large strains when the DFOS analyzer does not return a strain value), maximum strain that can be reliably measured, crack width that causes cable rupture, and the effect of the cable coating on the measurements. Structural damage indices are also proposed based on the DFOS results. These damage indices correlate reasonably well with the maximum sustained drift, indicating the potential of using DFOS for RC structural damage assessment. The experimental data set is made publicly available.

Abstract:Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP), a composite material with high corrosion resistance and high strength-to-weight ratio, has been increasingly used in reinforced concrete structures. The effectiveness of the structures depends on the bonding behavior between FRP composites and concrete structures. Therefore, detection of the debonding between the FRP materials and the hosting concrete structure is of great importance to ensure the structural safety. This paper proposes a stress wave-based active sensing approach to monitor the debonding process of FRP bar with the hosting concrete structure. One shear-type lead zirconate titanate (PZT) patch bonded on the outer surface of the FRP bar was used as an actuator to generate stress wave. Two smart aggregates (SAs), which were fabricated by sandwiching a shear type PZT patch between two protection marble pieces, were embedded in the hosting concrete structure to detect the wave response. The occurrence of debonding between the FRP bar and the hosting concrete structure attenuates the wave propagation. An FRP bar reinforced concrete specimen was designed and fabricated in laboratory. A pullout test was conducted to simulate different degrees of debonding damage. The attenuation of the stress wave due to debonding was clearly observed from the signal received by SAs in both time and frequency domain. Furthermore, a damage index based on wavelet packet analysis was developed to evaluate the debonding status. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method has potentials to detect different degrees of debonding damage of FRP bar reinforced concrete composite structures.

Abstract:A distributed optical fiber sensor based on Brillouin scattering (BOTDR or BOTDA) can measure and monitor strain and temperature generated along optical fiber. Because it can measure in real-time with high precision and stability, it is quite suitable for health monitoring of large-scale civil infrastructures. However, the main challenge of applying it to structural health monitoring is to ensure it is robust and can be repaired by adopting a suitable embedding method. In this paper, a novel method based on air-blowing and vacuum grouting techniques for embedding long-distance optical fiber sensors was developed. This method had no interference with normal concrete construction during its installation, and it could easily replace the long-distance embedded optical fiber sensor (LEOFS). Two stages of static loading tests were applied to investigate the performance of the LEOFS. The precision and the repeatability of the LEOFS were studied through an overloading test. The durability and the stability of the LEOFS were confirmed by a corrosion test. The strains of the LEOFS were used to evaluate the reinforcing effect of carbon fiber reinforced polymer and thereby the health state of the beams.
Global and Local Fiber Optic Sensors for Health Monitoring of Civil Engineering Infrastructure Retrofit with FRP Materials

Abstract:Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials are currently used for strengthening civil engineering structures and bridges. The effectiveness of the strengthening system is highly dependent on the bond characteristics of the FRP material to the external surface of the structure. This article presents the application of two types of fiber optic sensors, which can be embedded in FRP materials to monitor the global and local behavior of the strengthened structure, respectively. The global sensor is designed to evaluate the overall condition of a structure based on the measured elongation of the FRP layer along the entire span of the structure. The success of this low-cost global sensor has been demonstrated using a full-scale prestressed concrete bridge girder that was loaded up to failure. The test results indicate that this type of sensor can be used to identify major changes in the overall behavior of the structure such as cracking of prestressed members or yielding of the internal reinforcement. The second sensor component consists of fiber Bragg grating sensors. The sensors were used to monitor the behavior of steel double-lap shear specimens tested under tensile loading up to failure. The measurements were used to identify abnormal structural behaviors such as epoxy cracking and/or FRP debonding. The test results compared well to the numerical values obtained from a three dimensional shear-lag model that was previously developed to predict the sensor response.
FBG sensor based dynamic monitoring and analysis on sliding construction of a Prestressed Reticulated Shell-String structure

Abstract:The application of optical fiber sensors in monitoring of civil engineering structures is increasing continuously. One of the most frequently used sensor types is the so-called Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor which is ideally suited for long-term monitoring purposes due to some inherent advantages. This paper presents a real time monitoring of the sliding construction process of a prestressed reticulated shell-string (PRSS) structure with FBG sensors. Dynamic responses excited by two jumps during the sliding process are recorded by the monitoring system. Time and frequency domain analysis of the responses are conducted to explore the possible structural damage brought by the jump excitations. Dynamic properties of the structure are evaluated based on the data from monitoring. An approximate method for estimation of cable forces of the structure is also proposed. The conclusions of the study may benefit the researchers and practicers interested in construction process monitoring and analysis. © 2007 Taylor & Francis Group.

Abstract:Interface debonding may happen in steel structures repaired or strengthened by Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP), which will reduce ultimate loads and fatigue life of the structures. In this paper, a non-destructive method to test the interface debonding using Lamb waves is proposed. The electromechanical finite element detection model of a steel plate strengthened by CFRP is constructed, and the results have good consistency with experimental results. The effects of debonding position and debonding degree on the received signals are discussed in this paper, the signal waves are analyzed by the wavelet time-frequency conversion method and wavelet packet analysis method, and the relationship between the signal waves and the debonding parameters are obtained, which could support the damage detection of the repaired or strengthened structures by CFRP in the future.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach for damage detection in carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) structures based on local strain feature matching. The proposed approach utilizes distributed in-plane strain measurements for plate structures under load (in-service application) to define a local point autocorrelation coefficient based on Delaunay triangulation and Hausdorff distance. This coefficient effectively identifies the discontinuities in distributed in-plate strain, enabling accurate capture of damage information through the damage index which is defined as the integral of this coefficient. Notably, the proposed approach requires no prior knowledge of the non-damaged strain distribution and yields excellent detection results for both Barely Visible Impact Damage (BVID) and Visible Impact Damage (VID). Leveraging the advantages of distributed strain sensing, coupled with image processing technology for the purpose of in-service damage detection of CFRP structures, the proposed novel method is a promising technology. The efficacy of this technology has been demonstrated in this paper through theoretical analysis and experimental investigations, offering valuable insights and reference for future research in this domain.

Abstract:Carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs) are widely used in the fabrication of solid rocket motor casings due to their exceptional performance. However, the bonding interface between CFRP and viscoelastic materials (rubber) is prone to debonding damage during service and storage under complex environmental conditions, which poses a significant threat to the structural integrity and reliability of the engine. Existing nondestructive testing (NDT) methods, such as X-ray imaging, infrared thermography, and ultrasonic testing, although somewhat effective, exhibit significant limitations in detecting interfacial defects in deep or multilayered composite materials, particularly under the challenging conditions of service and storage. This study proposes an innovative method based on active Lamb wave energy analysis and introduces the Damage Evolution Factor (DEF), specifically designed to detect and evaluate interfacial debonding defects in CFRP–rubber bonded structures within solid rocket motors during service and storage. Through numerical simulations and experimental validation, we selected the A0 mode Lamb wave, which is more sensitive to interfacial damage, as the incident wave and excited it on the surface of the structure. Displacement time-history response signals at observation points under different damage models were extracted and analyzed, and DEF values were calculated. The results show that DEF values increase with the size of the interfacial debonding damage. Similar trends were observed in experimental studies, further validating the effectiveness of this method and demonstrating that DEF can be used for the quantitative evaluation of interfacial debonding defects in CFRP–rubber bilayer bonded structures.

Abstract:Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) has gradually become a commonly used repair and reinforcement material in construction and bridges. Due to its excellent mechanical properties, detecting its internal defects is essential. This paper proposes a non-destructive testing system for CFRP reinforced concrete structures based on digital shearography. Thermal loading is selected to test CFRP-reinforced concrete structures. The displacement gradient of deformation is calculated according to the phase image, and the strain variation detects the internal defects of concrete structures strengthened with CFRP. The experimental results show that under the appropriate shear and loading amount, the digital shearography can successfully detect the bonding defects; good results have been achieved with different sizes, depths, and distribution positions, which has excellent theoretical and practical significance for defect detection and control of CFRP strengthened structures.
