Abstract:A novel wavelength detection and demodulation technique of fiber Bragg gratings sensors is put forward. The principle, experimental setup and results of the sensor are analyzed. The new technique converts detections of shift of center reflecting wavelength into detection of light intensity extremum. Furthermore, a spatial division multiplexing system of Bragg gratings sensors based on the novel technique is developed. The multiplexing numbers are not confined by bandwidth of light source and tunable scope of single fiber Bragg grating.

Abstract:The large scale fiber grating array sensing system has found lots of applications in fields distributed in underwater, land, sky and space, which is often configured using TDM/WDM multiplexing schemes. In recent years, the integrated fabrication method without any fiber splicing points plays important roles in providing the largest system high reliability and robust detection performance. However, in such fiber grating array, the synthesis of fiber grating array without bringing any damage becomes a difficult problem. The existing reconstruction algorithms are only used for single fiber bragg grating. This paper will start with the fiber grating array which is formed by two low reflectivity FBGs and regarded as a special chirp fiber grating, then a proposal of synthesis the fiber grating array in time domain ispresented, which can also suppressthe multi-reflections induced signal crosstalk. The research results will provide a solution tothe synthesis of the integrated fiber grating array and a new signal processing method to suppress the array signal crosstalk.

Abstract:A novel low-reflectivity Fiber Bragg Grating sensor system with a combination of time division multiplexing mode,a narrow wavelength swept laser is proposed and demonstrated for achieving multiple sensing points,long-distance,quasi-distributed measurement.Time division multiplexing mode and the low reflectivity Fiber Bragg Gratings which have the close center wavelength are used to monitor multiple points simultaneously.And,Er-doped fiber and Raman amplification method is proposed to extend the sensing distance.The middle of the system involves a Raman pump for amplifying FBG reflected signal,and the Erbium-doped fiber uses the remaining Raman pump power to generate amplification of spontaneous emission and amplify sensing signal.Experimental results show that an excellent optical SNR of 15 dB has been achieved for 200 km transmission distance.In the static strain and temperature experiments at the distance of 200 km,the linearities achieve more than 0.999.

Abstract:The optical low-coherent interferometric technology for Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing array is described. The sensing array is formed by a series of identical FBGs with low reflectivity (5.25%), where the first FBG acts as a reference (shielded from the measurand), and the other FBGs work as sensors. Each sensing-FBG and the reference-FBG can form a Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometer with a specific cavity length. By scanning a home-made optical low-coherence reflectometry (OLCR), the signals corresponding to different sensing-FBGs (F-P interferometers) can be obtained and well distinguished. A measurement of temperature is demonstrated and it shows good performance of the scheme.

Abstract:A serial time-division multiplexing optical fiber sensing network with a large multiplexing capacity, which is based on identical ultraweak fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and self-heterodyne detection technique, is proposed. An experimental system, which has 10 identical ultraweak FBGs with the same Bragg wavelength of 1550 nm, reflectivity of −36 dB, and bandwidth of 0.1 nm, is set up to investigate the performance of the proposed scheme. The spectra of 10 ultraweak FBGs are resolved with a high accuracy, and the wavelength–temperature sensitivity and temperature resolution of the system are 10.5 pm/°C, 0.09°C, respectively. A self-heterodyne detection technique is adopted to increase the sensitivity of the receiver, which makes it possible to multiplex over 1000 FBGs along a single optical fiber. Theoretical analyses demonstrate that this sensing scheme can effectively increase the multiplexing capacity and measurement accuracy.

Abstract:An optical low-coherent interferometric technology for fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor array is described. A series of identical FBGs with low reflectivity form a sensor array. The first FBG of the array works as the reference FBG and the others work as sensing FBGs. Each sensing FBG and the reference FBG can form an in-fiber Fabry–Perot (F–P) interferometer with a specific cavity length. By scanning a home-made optical low-coherence reflectometry, the interference signals corresponding to different sensing FBGs (F–P interferometers) can be obtained and well distinguished. The mismatch in wavelength between the reference FBG and a sensing FBG induced by the measurand around this sensing FBG will cause the decrease of the intensity of the corresponding interference signal. A measurement of temperature is demonstrated and good performance is achieved. Factors limiting the total number of sensing FBGs are also discussed.

Abstract:By using the plane-by-plane grating inscription method with an fs-IR laser, random fiber gratings with low laser-induced loss were fabricated in SMF-28 fiber for distributed temperature sensing. Compared to conventional random gratings having broadband backscattering enhancement, the demonstrated random fiber grating has a well defined narrower bandwidth of backscattering enhancement, higher laser-induced backscattering level, and lower laser-induced loss, which are critical for long-haul distributed fiber sensor systems with high measurement accuracy. Experimental results showed that by using fabricated random fiber gratings along with the technique of optical frequency-domain reflectometry, a distributed temperature fiber sensor could be realized having a gauge length of 10 mm, standard deviation of temperature measurement as low as 0.00085C, and laser-induced loss of 0.08dBm.

Abstract:We report a distributed multifunctional fiber sensing network based on weak-fiber Bragg gratings (WFBGs) and long period fiber grating (LPG) assisted OTDR system. The WFBGs are applied for temperature, strain, and vibration monitoring at key position, and the LPG is used as a linear filter in the system to convert the wavelength shift of WFBGs caused by environmental change into the power change. The simulation results show that it is possible to integrate more than 4472 WFBGs in the system when the reflectivity of WFBGs is less than 10(-5). Besides, the back-Rayleigh scattering along the whole fiber can also be detected which makes distributed bend sensing possible. As an experimental demonstration, we have used three WFBGs UV-inscribed with 50-m interval at the end of a 2.6-km long fiber, which part was subjected for temperature, strain, and vibration sensing, respectively. The ratio of the intensity of output and input light is used for temperature and strain sensing, and the results show strain and temperature sensitivities are 4.2 x 10(-4)/mu epsilon and 5.9 x 10(-3)/degrees C, respectively. Detection of multiple vibrations and single vibration with the broad frequency band up to 500 Hz are also achieved. In addition, distributed bend sensing which could be simultaneously realized in this system has been proposed.

Abstract:The authors demonstrated a novel system to interrogate the Bragg wavelengths shift of an array of in-fiber Bragg gratings. The system used another array of in-fiber Bragg gratings as tracking filters to track the shifting reflected wavelengths of in-fiber Bragg gratings and locate the peaks of wavelengths by a digitizing method. A grating scale was employed to read out the output of the system. The resolution of the system was less than 1 με.

Abstract:Abstract This paper reviews the recent advances on the high-performance distributed Brillouin optical fiber sensing, which include the conventional distributed Brillouin optical fiber sensing based on backward stimulated Brillouin scattering and two other novel distributed sensing mechanisms based on Brillouin dynamic grating and forward stimulated Brillouin scattering, respectively. As for the conventional distributed Brillouin optical fiber sensing, the spatial resolution has been improved from meter to centimeter in the time-domain scheme and to millimeter in the correlation-domain scheme, respectively; the measurement time has been reduced from minute to millisecond and even to microsecond; the sensing range has reached more than 100 km. Brillouin dynamic grating can be used to measure the birefringence of a polarization-maintaining fiber, which has been explored to realize distributed measurement of temperature, strain, salinity, static pressure, and transverse pressure. More recently, forward stimulated Brillouin scattering has gained considerable interest because of its capacity to detect mechanical features of materials surrounding the optical fiber, and remarkable works using ingenious schemes have managed to realize distributed measurement, which opens a brand-new way to achieve position-resolved substance identification.

Design and Realization of Briliouin Optical Time Domain Reflectometer with 34km in Sensing Length

Abstract:Brillouin distributed optical fiber sensor is one of the most promising techniques for practical applications, the key is how to detect the Brillouin scattering light, Brillouin optical time domain reflectometer is a good detecting method. Aimed at the scattering light signal's characters of Brillouin optical distributed sensor, a detecting scheme using optical coherent detection was developed. In detail, the scheme adopts electric-optical modulating to produce the frequency-adjustable reference light, which was optical heterodyne detected with the scattering lights. Using electronic processing, Brillouin scattering signal was gained based on Brillouin frequency shift. After accumulation and average, the distributed sensing signal was obtained. Using the optical coherent detection method, Brillouin optical time domain reflectometer has realized, and the distributed stress sensing experiment for 34km fiber was achieved.

Abstract:At present, the distributed detection system based on Bragg grating as sensor has become a hot spot at home and abroad due to its high precision, good long-term stability and easy detection. In ordering to improve the grating multiplexing capacity in grating sensor array, this paper proposes a new distributed the weak reflected Bragg grating temperature sensing network. The system is mainly composed of light source module, photoelectric conversion module, data acquisition module and data processing module, which combine the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) with optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR). And it has achieved simultaneous online monitoring of weak gratings at various central wavelengths through its homemade tunable multiwavelength light source. Due to the principle of grating reflection, the detection cycle of the system is about 1s without energy accumulation, shorter than the traditional sensing system. Because of using the OTDR, it can break through the limitation of light scanning bandwidth, and its single-channel measurement can be up to kilometers. As above, the system has many advantages, such as good real-time performance, large capacity, short response time, being able to adapt to a variety of work environment, etc.

Abstract:A high-speed quasi-distributed fibre optic sensing technique for strain is proposed and a proof-of-concept experiment is performed. The sensing link is formed by multiple fibre Bragg gratings and interrogated by a pulsed broadband source. A dispersive unit is used to translate wavelength variations to time-delay changes to enable high-speed sensing capability. As the gratings can be weakly reflecting and nominally identical in their reflection spectra, this technique has the inherent capability of high-capacity multiplexing. Linear and repeatable static strain response was achieved with a strain-delay conversion factor of -3.37 ps/epsilon and a resolution of 4.73 epsilon. Dynamic strain was successfully measured at a sampling rate of 7 kHz and dynamic resolution of 0.2 epsilon/Hz was obtained.

Abstract:We propose a novel quasi-real-time sensing scheme by employing a modified optical frequency domain reflectometry technique to multiplex long-period grating (LPG) sensors of transmission mode. Different sensing signals are demodulated by different beat signals through presetting different values for the optical path differences between the measuring arms and a static reference arm. The amplitude of each beat signal is associated with the transmissivity of a sensing LPG. The present multiplexing scheme has the advantages of real-time, high speed, high sensitivity, large capacity, and high resolution over an intermediate length. A measurement of fiber bending curvature is demonstrated to verify good performances of the present LPG sensing system.

Abstract:A novel wavelength-division-multiplexed in-fibre Bragg grating sensor system combined with high resolution drift-compensated interferometric wavelength-shift detection is described. This crosstalk-free system is based on the use of an interferometric wavelength scanner and a low resolution spectrometer. A four element system is demonstrated for temperature measurement, and a resolution of ±0.1°C has been achieved.
