Abstract:Rutile is an important accessory mineral phase in crust-forming rocks. It remains in great stability during various geological processes such as rock forming, weathering and low to high grade metamorphism. In addition to its main component TiO2,, rutile also contains numerous other trace elements (metal ions). Geochemical features of these trace elements are important tracers for understanding geological processes experienced by the rutile-hosting rocks. In the past two decades, in particular over the last decade, studies of rutile have been a hot and front field in geochemical researches. The trace elemental and isotopic characteristics in rutiles are widely used on the understanding of a variety of geological processes, including the overall mass balance of the Earth's elements, the formation mechanism of the continental crust, source tracking of protolith of rutile-bearing rocks, P-T condition estimates of metamorphic rocks, U-Pb geochronology, etc. In this paper we try to summarize the latest developments in the field of rutile studies in recent years, aiming to introduce the newly developed important geochemical information reservoir to Chinese geochemists.
