Abstract:A survivable wavelength-division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) with centralized protection scheme and colorless optical network units is proposed. The sideband channels generated via optical carrier suppression technique are used to carry both the downstream (DS) and the upstream (US) remodulated signals for two neighboring sub-PONs. By employing alternate path routing of sideband channels, the centralized protection scheme can provide reliable protection against any failure in feed fibers, remote node, and distribution fibers. The number of extra fibers is greatly reduced, and efficient utilization of wavelength resource is achieved. The feasibility of the proposed system is verified by 10-Gb/s DS and 1.25-Gb/s US signals over 25-km single-mode fiber transmission in both working and protection modes. Abstract:In this paper, a novel and simple scheme to realize flexible access for gigabit wireline and impulse radio ultrawideband (IR-UWB) wireless services is proposed. The UWB signals are generated by multi-carrier upconverting and reshaping the baseband signals. The proposed system was experimentally demonstrated with the performances of 2.0-Gb/s data in both baseband and UWB formats after 46-km single mode fiber transmission and further 0.5-m wireless for UWB data. The flexibility of the system is confirmed by investigating the system performance at different data rates including 1.0 and 1.6 Gb/s. Optical wavelength independency and data-rate variability of UWB signal generation makes the system attractive for potential wireline and wireless applications in existing wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)-passive optical network (PON) systems.

Abstract:A novel protection architecture for passive optical networks (PONs) is presented and evaluated. It is based on the cyclic property of arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) and the interconnection between two adjacent optical network units. The proposed scheme is compatible with both wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) PONs and hybrid WDM/time-division-multiplexing PONs. It is compared with two existing schemes and shown to have several advantages: 1) 50% less wavelengths is needed; 2) the fiber interconnections are simplified; 3) the connection availability is improved by one order of magnitude.

Abstract:A novel self-protection scheme for an Ethernet passive optical network is introduced and studied at both the physical and the media access control layers. The scheme is simple and fast and can provide 1: 1 protection and automatic traffic restoration against the fiber link failure between a remote node ( RN) and any optical network unit (ONU). Simulation results show that fiber failure does not degrade the transmission performance, and the restoration time depends mainly on the switch time of the physical layer. Our protection scheme saves many long fibers, does not influence other normal ONUs, and requires no active device in the RN. (C) 2006 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:A novel 25-GHz-spaced dense wavelength-division multiplexing passive optical network (DWDM-PON) is proposed to improve the utilization of wavelength resource and mitigate the Rayleigh backscattering (RB) and back-reflection effects. A colorless optical network unit (ONU) is realized by remodulating the downstream (DS) signal via a gain-saturated reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA). Due to the simple interconnecting architecture at the remote node (RN), the DS and upstream (US) signals in each feed fiber (FF) are carried on different channels. Therefore, the RB and back-reflection effects are significantly reduced. The feasibility and merits of the proposed system are experimentally demonstrated with the error-free transmission of 10-Gb/s DS and 1.25-Gb/s US signals over a 25-km single-mode fiber.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new access networks concept: wavelength division multiplexing passive optical networks. We emphasize the superiority of its architecture and analyze two special technologies adopted by recent WDMPON architecture: optical source sharing and spectral slicing. In the end, we indicate that WDMPON is the best candidate for future broadband network. It will offer important reference for telecommunication carriers to consider the best choice for the future OAN.

Abstract:A novel scalable wavelength-division multiplexing access network is proposed in this article. By newly designing the remote node, this network can not only support the long-reach transmission and broadcasting services, it can also have flexible scalability and the ability of sharing fiber protection. These make this network have great resilient capability. Also, this scheme still has the characteristic of Rayleigh backscattering mitigation and shared-seeding light of upstream signals. The simulation results indicate this network has good performance.

Abstract:We propose and investigate a simply self-restored tree-type time-division- multiplexed passive optical network (TDM-PON) with duplex fiber system against the fiber failure. The new proposed optical line terminal (OLT), optical network unit (ONU), and remote node (RN) can be used to prevent and protect the occurrence of fiber failure in the self-protected tree-type PON. The protection and restoration time of the access network can be archived within 7 ms in this experiment. In addition, the performances of data traffic for the fiber access network are also analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:This paper proposes and numerically investigates a novel high-speed wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) architecture with colorless user terminals based on the use of orthogonal modulation scheme for downstream and upstream transmission. The 40Gb/s optical frequency shift keyed (FSK) downstream data is generated based on carrier-suppressed modulation. At optical network unit, the downstream signal is directly re-modulated by the 2.5Gb/s up-stream data and sent back with the same fiber. Error free transmission over 20km single mode fiber can be observed for both downstream and upstream signals in our simulation. Power budget, tolerance of channel spacing, FSK tone spacing and dispersion are all investigated. Factors that might influence the stability of the system are analyzed and an extended hybrid wired/wireless version of the scheme is also given.

Abstract:Wavelength reuse has been proposed as an effective solution to realize colorless optical network units (ONUs) for next-generation passive optical network with simplified maintenance and reduced cost. In this paper, we propose a wavelength reused mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) scheme for bidirectional short-reach optical access network with low mode-crosstalk multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX) and few-mode fiber (FMF). In downstream (DS) transmission, one of the spatial modes in FMF is used to transmit optical carriers, while the others are used as DS signal channels. In upstream (US) transmission, the carrier is split to all the ONUs for US remodulation. By utilizing low mode-crosstalk mode MUX/DEMUX and FMF, the carrier and each signal channel can be effectively separated. Compared with other wavelength reused schemes in which the DS and US transmission are modulated in orthogonal dimension, the signal qualities on two transmission directions are independent in the proposed scheme, and symmetrical bidirectional transmission without residual remodulation crosstalk can be achieved. What is more, to reduce bidirectional Rayleigh backscattering noise, we propose to use different optical sidebands for DS and US transmission. With the proposed scheme, we experimentally demonstrate symmetrical bidirectional 2 × 12.5-Gb/s quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) intensity-modulation and direct-detection transmission over 11.5-km four-mode FMF. With Rayleigh backscattering noise mitigation, a Q-factor improvement of 2 dB is achieved for the US signal at the DS signal-to-carrier power ratio of -27 dB.

Abstract:In the presence of the increasing demand, it is urgent for the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical transport network not only to boost the transmission capacity but also to enhance the survivability. In this paper, A M:N protection scheme for WDM optical transport networks is proposed and demonstrated. The M protection channels are used to transmit low priority traffic in normal condition, and can be switched automatically to replace a working channel when failure occurs to that working channel. Compared with the 1+1 protection system, the proposed scheme achieves better performance with lower costs. An optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) is also proposed with the protection scheme. Any channel in M or in N can be dropped in the OADM according to the demand of the network management center. When failures occurred to a working channel that should be dropped in the OADM, and when the traffic on the failed working channel has already been switched to a protection channel at the previous node, the protection channel is dropped in the OADM automatically instead of the failed working channel. Then the corresponded adding signal is still added to the working channel, i.e., the protection channel is set free and can be used to carry low priority traffic again to the next node. Experimental result shows that the protection takes place within 7 ms, which satisfies the requirement of the ITU-T recommendations.

Abstract:A new, to the best of our knowledge, scheme for a wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) based on a flat optical frequency comb (OFC) is proposed. Using an OFC as the optical source of the system can realize the colorlessness of optical network units (ONUs), and the direct detection of the downlink data further simplifies the ONU structure. The coherent demodulation of the uplink data improves the system performance due to the coherence of the comb lines. In this research, the proposed system is studied for its performance and power budgeting. The results show the flexibility, effectiveness, and practicability of the proposed scheme, which can be applied to future high-capacity optical access networks.

Abstract:The wavelength-division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is considered to be a promising method to overlay or upgrade the existing optical access network. A centralized WDM-PON in which the downstream wavelength is reused to modulate the upstream has been studied comprehensively, for same wavelength operation of both downstream and upstream, colorless operation and source-free of optical network units (ONU) can be realized in such systems. We propose a scheme of centralized WDM-PON with non-return-to-zero/continuous-wave (NRZ/CW)polarization multiplexed downstream and remodulated upstream using a CW injection-locked Fabry-Perot (FP) laser.This scheme can eliminate the crosstalk of downstream data on the upstream and get higher extinction ratio of received downstream signal. Experiment with 22.2km transmission of 10-Gb/s downstream signal and 622-Mb/s upstream signal was realized using a commercial FP laser, with power penalties of 0.2dB and 0dB respectively. 2.5-Gb/s upstream signal using an injection locked FP laser was also investigated, and 61 modes within 25.4nm span were locked with side-mode suppression ratio of above 27dB. © 2008 SPIE.

Abstract:This paper proposes and numerically investigated a novel high-speed wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) architecture with colorless user terminals based on the use of a different modulation scheme for downstream and upstream transmission. In the central office (CO), based on the carrier suppressing functionality of Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) and differential-phase-shift-keying to amplitude-shift-keying conversion using Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer, 40-Gb/s optical frequency shift keying (FSK) is generated and employed for transmitting the downstream data. In the remote node (RN) or optical network unit (ONU), the upstream data is re-modulated at 2.5-Gb/s by an intensity modulator and sent back to CO with the same fiber. Since only one light source is needed for each WDM channel, and the MZM to generate carrier suppressed signal can be shared by all the channels, a centralized 40-Gb/s WDM-PON access system with low-cost configuration is realized. Error free transmission over 20-km SMF can be observed for both downstream and upstream signals in our simulation. © 2008 SPIE.
