Abstract:Because of the inherent difficulty in differentiating two olefins, the development of metal-catalyzed asymmetric cyclization of 1,6-dienes remains challenging. Herein, we describe the first rhodium(III)-catalyzed asymmetric borylative cyclization of cyclohexadienone-tethered mono-, 1,1di-, and (E)-1,2-disubstituted alkenes (1,6-dienes), affording optically pure cis-bicyclic skeletons bearing three or four contiguous stereocenters with high yields (25-93%), and excellent diastereoselectivities (>20:1 dr) and enantioselectivities (90-99% ee). This mild catalytic approach is generally compatible with a wide range of functional groups, which allows several facile conversions of the cyclization products. Furthermore, on the basis of our SAESI-MS experiment and computational study, a Rh(I)/(III) catalytic cycle is proposed in this tandem reaction, and the Rh(I) active species catalyzes the overall transformation via sequential oxidative addition of B(2)pin(2), olefin insertion, cyclizing conjugate addition, and reductive elimination. The irreversible conjugate addition determines the overall regioselectivity of borylative cyclization, and the ring strain favors the formation of 5,6-bicyclic structure. This highlights the control of ring strain in diene cyclizations, which provides a useful basis for future reaction designs.

Abstract:Small-ring chemistry is a fascinating field in organic chemistry. gem -Difluorinated cyclopropanes, a unique class of cyclopropanes, have garnered significant interest due to their intrinsic high reactivity. In this context, gem -difluorinated cyclopropanes have been extensively investigated as fluoroallylic synthons in Pd-catalyzed ring-opening/cross-coupling reactions for the synthesis of monofluoroalkenes with linear or branched selectivity. In contrast, Rh-catalysis has revealed diverse selectivity in the reaction of gem -difluorinated cyclopropanes, such as regioselectivity, enantioselectivity, and chemoselectivity. This feature article aims to summarize our efforts towards developing Rh-catalyzed reactions of gem -difluorinated cyclopropanes, briefly discussing the design, selectivity, reaction mechanisms and future research prospects.

Abstract:An efficient chirality transfer in the [RhCl(CO)(2)](2)-catalyzed [2+2+1] cyclization of optically active axially chiral 1,3-disubstituted allenynes with CO to access optically active bicyclopentenone compounds has been developed. The distal C=C bond of allenes reacted with the alknye unit and CO to afford [4.3.0]-bicyclic products with high ee values under mild reaction conditions with an excellent selectivity.

Abstract:2-Methylene- or alkylidenecyclopropanyl ketones were easily prepared by the regioselective cyclopropanation of allenes or the reaction of methylene-/alkylidenecyclopropanyllithium with N,N-dimethyl carboxylic acid amides. Due to the presence of the exo-cyclic C=C bond and the strained cyclopropane, their highly selective ring-opening cycloisomerization using PdCl(2)(CH(3)CN)(2), NaI (or PdCl(2)(CH(3)CN)(2) + NaI), and Pd(PPh(3))(4) as catalysts provided five different products, i.e., 4H-pyrans, 2,3,4-trisubstituted furans (or 4,5-disubstituted-3-alkylidene-2,3-dihydrofurans), and 2,3,4,5-tetrasubtituted furans (or 2,4,5-trisubstituted-3-alkylidene-2,3-dihydrofurans) in good yields, respectively, depending on the nature of the catalyst and reaction conditions. The less-substituted C=C bonds in these products can be highly selectively hydrogenated or hydroborated to afford new heterocyclic products stereoselectively. These three types of different reactions may proceed through a highly regioselective cleavage of a carbon-carbon single bond in the cyclopropane ring triggered by regioselective halometalation of the C=C bond and beta-decarbopalladation, halogen anion attack on the nonsubstituted carbon atom of the cyclopropane ring, or the direct oxidative addition of the distal carbon-carbon single bond of the cyclopropane ring with Pd(0). In some cases substituent effects were successfully applied to synthesize 2H-pyrans 8 and 3-alkylidene-2,3-dihydrofurans 5, which also provided some mechanistic information.

Abstract:Allenes are important 2π building blocks in organic synthesis and engage as 2-carbon components in many metal-catalyzed reactions. Wender and co-workers discovered that methyl substituents on the terminal allene double bond counterintuitively change the reactivities of allenes in [Rh(CO)2Cl]2-catalyzed intermolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions with vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs). More sterically encumbered allenes afford higher cycloadduct yields, and such effects are also observed in other Rh(I)-catalyzed intermolecular cycloadditions. Through density functional theory calculations (B3LYP and M06) and experiment, we explored this enigmatic reactivity and selectivity of allenes in [Rh(CO)2Cl]2-catalyzed intermolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions with VCPs. The apparent low reactivity of terminally unsubstituted allenes is associated with a competing allene dimerization that irreversibly sequesters rhodium. With terminally substituted allenes, steric repulsion between the terminal substituents significantly increases the barrier of allene dimerization while the barrier of the (5 + 2) cycloaddition is not affected, and thus the cycloaddition prevails. Computation has also revealed the origin of chemoselectivity in (5 + 2) cycloadditions with allene-ynes. Although simple allene and acetylene have similar reaction barriers, intermolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions of allene-ynes occur exclusively at the terminal allene double bond. The terminal double bond is more reactive due to the enhanced d-π* backdonation. At the same time, insertion of the internal double bond of an allene-yne has a higher barrier as it would break π conjugation. Substituted alkynes are more difficult to insert compared with acetylene, because of the steric repulsion from the additional substituents. This leads to the greater reactivity of the allene double bond relative to the alkynyl group in allene-ynes.

Abstract:The mechanism and origins of selectivities in [Ni(NHC)]-catalyzed intramolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions and homo-ene reactions of vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs) and alkynes have been studied using density functional theory. The preferred mechanism involves oxidative alkyne-alkene cyclization to form a metallacyclopentene intermediate, in contrast to a cyclopropane cleavage pathway in the reaction with Rh(I) catalysts. The selectivity between the (5 + 2) and homo-ene products is determined in the subsequent competing reductive elimination and β-hydride elimination steps. Two similar-sized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands, SIPr and ItBu, yielded reversed product selectivity, favoring the (5 + 2) and homo-ene products respectively. This is attributed to the anisotropic steric environment of these NHC ligands, which positions the bulky substituents on the ligand toward different directions and leads to distinct steric control in the reductive elimination and β-hydride elimination transition states.

The whole process of the current reaction involves the nucleophilic cyclic oxyrhodation/ stereodefined carborhodation/ beta-H elimination/ reductive elimination. Calculated results reveal that the carborhodation step is not only the rate-limiting step but also determines the stereo-selectivity.

Abstract:The control of linear/branched selectivity is one of the major focuses in transition-metal catalyzed allyl-allyl cross-coupling reactions, in which bond connection occurs at the terminal site of both the allyl fragments forming different types of 1,5-dienes. Herein, terminal/internal regioselectivity is investigated and found to be switchable in allyl-allyl cross-coupling reactions between gem-difluorinated cyclopropanes and allylboronates. The controlled terminal/internal regioselectivity arises from the fine-tuning of the rhodium catalytic system. Fluorinated 1,3-dienes, 1,4-dienes and 1,5-dienes are therefore produced in good yields with respectively isomerized terminal, internal, and terminal regioselectivity.

Abstract:Described herein is the Pd-0-catalyzed coupling cyclization reaction of 1,2-allenyl ketones with organic halides leading efficiently and conveniently to not only 2,3,4- and 2,3,5-trisubstituted furans but also 2,3,4,5-tetrasubstituted furans. Furthermore, this method showed high substituent-loading capability and tolerance of various substituents. The reactions of 1,2-allenyl ketones 1e, 1p, 1q, and deuterated [D] 1c were performed for a mechanistic study, which demonstrated that instead of an enolization pathway, the reaction may proceed via the intermediacy of dienolate palladium and intramolecular nucleophilic attack on the pi-allyl palladium intermediate by the carbonyl oxygen.

Abstract:An unexpected rhodium-catalyzed highly regio- and stereo-selective bimolecular nucleophilic oxyrhodation/insertion/1,4-Rh migration/beta-H elimination reaction of 2,3-allenols affording (2,5-dihydrofuran-3-yl)but-2(E)-en-1-one derivatives is reported. Optically active products may be prepared from optically active 2,3-allenols without obvious racemization. The synthetic potentials have been demonstrated.

Abstract:Recently, Dong's group [Angew. Chem., Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 7567-7571; Angew. Chem, Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 1891-1895] reported the ligand-controlled selectivity of Rh-catalyzed intramolecular coupling reaction of alkene-benzocyclobutenone: the direct coupling product (i.e., fused-rings) was formed in the DPPB-assisted system (DPPB = PPh2(CH2)(4)PPh2), while the decarbonylative coupling product (i.e., spirocycles) was generated in the P(C6F5)(3)-assited system. To explain this interesting selectivity, density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been carried out in the present study. It was found that the direct and decarbonylative couplings experience the same C(acyl)-C(sp(2)) activation and alkene insertion steps. The following C-C reductive elimination or beta-H elimination-decarbonylation-reductive elimination leads to the direct or decatbonylative coupling reaction, respectively. The coordination features of different ligands were found to significantly influence C C reductive elimination and decarbonylation step. The requisite phosphine dissociation of DPPB ligand from Rh center for the decarbonylation step is disfavored, and thus, the reductive elimination and direct coupling reaction are favored therein. By contrast, a free coordination site is available on the Rh center in the P(C6F5)(3)-assisted system, facilitating the decarbonylation process together with the generation of related decarbonylative coupling product.

Abstract:In the absence of a base, palladium(II) catalysts, such as PdCl(2), PdCl(2)(CH(3)CN)(2), Pd(OAc)(2), and [(pi-C(3)H(5))PdCl](2), can catalyze the cyclizative coupling reaction of 2,3- or 3,4-allenols with allylic halides in DMA at room temperature to provide 2,5-dihydrofurans and 5,6-dihydro-2H-pyrans, respectively, in moderate to good yields. Under similar reaction conditions, nonsubstituted 2,3-allenol 1s affords bimolecular cyclizative coupling product 5s as the major product. The scope of the reaction and its mechanism have been studied briefly. On the basis of the experimental results, the transformation was believed to proceed via a divalent palladium-catalyzed pathway.

Abstract:Ag(I)-catalyzed synthesis of diazo-trisubstituted furans starting from diazo-cumulated allenyl ketones has been investigated. The Rh2(OAc)4-catalyzed reaction of the diazo 2,3,5-trisubstituted furans provided penta-substituted aromatics via cascade intermolecular cyclopropanation/rearrangement/isomerization. The cyclopropanation on the furan ring/rearrangement of cyclopropane moiety has been reported. A reasonable mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:Rh-catalyzed dynamic kinetic intramolecular [4+2] cycloaddition reaction of 1,3-disubstituted allene-1,3-dienes afforded cis -fused [4.3.0]bicyclic products with an excellent chemo-, diastereo-, and enantio-selectivity. Many synthetically useful functional groups are tolerated. The synthetic utility has been demonstrated. Based on the careful experimental studies, a mechanism involving the rapid racemization of the allene moiety in the starting materials has been proposed.

Abstract:Herein the palladium-catalyzed cyclizative borylation of allenyl ketones with diboron compounds is reported which involves the carbene boryl migratory insertion as the key step. This reaction features mild conditions, good functional group tolerance and broad substrate scope. Thus, it represents an efficient methodology for the assembly of diverse tri-substituted furyl boronates. In addition, a series of transformations of the resultant multi-substituted furyl boronates were conducted to provide various densely substituted furan derivatives in good yields, further illustrating the potential synthetic utility of this methodology.

Abstract:A cooperative Rh(II)/Pd(0) dual-catalysis strategy that promotes a cyclization/allylic alkylation cascade of stable α-diazo-δ-keto-esters has been developed. Highly substituted 3(2<i>H</i>)-furanones with a C2-quaternary center can be obtained efficiently under mild conditions via one-pot synthesis. Remarkably, this binary catalytic system shows high chemo-, regio-, and stereoselectivity and excellent tolerance to various functionalities.

Abstract:By developing gem‑difluoromethylene allenes as viable partners, regiocontrolled Rh(III)-catalyzed redox-neutral CC coupling/CN cyclization has been realized to build the pyridin-2(1H)-one motifs with the embedment of a Z-configured monofluoroalkene functionality, in which either (hetero)aromatic or vinylic amides were found to be compatible. Integrated experimental and computational mechanistic studies revealed that a tandem regioselective allene 1,2-insertion/β-H elimination/hydrogen transfer/oxidative addition/cyclization/cis-β-F elimination involving an unconventional Rh(III)-Rh(I)-Rh(III) catalytic cycle accounts for the established transformation. Through further FMO analysis and IGMH maps, a non-covalent weak interaction network between the gem‑difluoromethylene part and the OPiv moiety was rationally defined for the unconventional and specific regioselectivity control.
