Abstract:Manganese oxide nanomaterials with notably increased surface area and greatly reduced size have been widely used in many applications [1]. One of the most important industrial applications of manganese oxides is oxidation catalysis. The electrochemical and catalytic applications of manganese oxides have recently been studied. [1,2] The aim of this study was to investigate, synthesis and compare the electrochemical characteristics and catalytic degradation of alizarin yellow R (Mordant Orange 1) with air oxygen in aqueous solution by β-MnO2 nanowires and Mn3O4 octahedrons MnO(OH) nanorods. The rod to octahedron transformation mechanism was studied, effects of pH and temperature on the rate of alizarin yellow R degradation were evaluated and the degradation products were analyzed by GC-MS. Figs. 1a-1c show the XRD pattern of as-synthesized β-MnO2 nanowire, MnO(OH) nanorods and octahedrons-like Mn3O4, respectively. All labeled reflection peaks could be readily indexed to tetragonal, monoclinic, and tetragonal phase according to JCPDS card no. 024-0735, 88-0649 and 024-0734, respectively. Fig. 1d shows FE-SEM image of β-MnO2 nanowire with lengths of several micrometers. The SA-ED indicating single-crystalline structure (inserted in Fig. 1d). Fig. 1e reveals MnO(OH) nanorods with different faces. When the temperature increased, the MnO(OH) nanorods are transformed to octahedronlike Mn3O4 (Fig. 1f). SA-ED also indicates a single-crystalline structure (inserted in Fig. 1f). The transformation of rod to octahedron can be described by the Ostwald ripening mechanism.Copyright © 2011 by World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.
