Abstract:The syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) fine powder was prepared in bulk process with a new metallocene catalyst system, C p*Ti(ROPhO) 3/MAO/TIBA. The effects of catalyst concentration and polymerization temperature on monomer conversion, average molecular weight and particle morphology were investigated. It has been found that the syndiotactic polymerization of styrene is not characterized as living polymerization and the powdery sPS has a δ-semi-crystal structure, whereas the sPS gel product is almost not crystallized.

Abstract:Aiming at solving the several queries in the classic theory of the anionic polymerization,with the help of a self-invented device containing a spiral tubular reactor,the kinetics of the anionic bulk polymerization of styrene was investigated.Results showed that the polymerizations followed the classic theory of the anionic polymerization before 4% of the conversion.After that,however,there would appear a stationary-conversion platform and then a significant increase in polymerization rate.In order to explain the experimental results,a kinetics equation of the anionic polymerization was derived based on a hypothesis,in which polymerized molecular chains initiated by the active species in the initiator would never aggregate again to maintain the balance between aggregated initiators and active species according to the classic theory.In the light of the kinetics equation,the simulation results based on the experiments implied that there might exist an aggregation process and then a dissociation of aggregated initiator during the anionic polymerization.

Abstract:The bulk polymerization of styrene catalyzed by Nd(P204)3/MgBu2/HMPA (hexamethyl phospho-ramide) was carried out in capped glass tubes. The effects of reaction conditions on polymerization conversion and molecular weight in the range of high conversion were investigated. The molecular weight of the resultant polymers is dramatically high and its distribution is relatively narrow. The polymerization process demonstrates the feature of living polymerization and auto-acceleration phenomenon. The auto-acceleration phenomenon is attributed to the non-instantaneous formation of the active species. The experimental data suggest that chain transfer to MgBu2 is one of the factors governing the molecular weight development. A mechanism of polymerization is presented with the chain transfer process incorporated.

Abstract:By choosing a proper agitator and reinforcing its stirring shear, powdery syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) is prepared in a bulk precipitation process with two homogeneous metallocene catalyst systems [Cp*TiX3/'MAO/TIBA (X = Cl or OPhOMe)]. A full-range kinetics study of the heterogeneous polymerization is performed in detail to produce this kind of powdery sPS in an industrial process. A typical curve of conversion versus time takes an S shape and an obvious acceleration phenomenon occurs in the middle stage of the polymerization, although the polymer-monomer gel is avoided. The viscous-average molecular weight of sPS goes through a peculiar increasing-decreasing-increasing change during the bulk polymerization process. These phenomena are viewed in terms of the two-phase polymerization mechanism and the overheating in particles during polymerization. The influence of the metallocene catalyst type and concentration, MAO/Ti ratio, triisobutyl aluminum (TIBA)/Ti ratio, and polymerization temperature on the polymerization kinetics are investigated. TIBA has dual effects on the polymerization. A small amount of TIBA in the catalyst system promotes polymerization, but more TIBA leads to a low molecular weight sPS. (C) 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:This work presents new insight in the initiating mechanism of the anionic polymerization based on the anionic bulk-polymerization of styrene(St) at the temperature ranging from 60°C to 140 °C.The results revealed that the inactive aggregation of n-butyllithium existing in a hexameric structure at low temperature(20 °C) could be transformed into the active species at high temperature(≥60 °C).It was found that there were 1.3 active positions in average randomly distributed in the hexameric-structure,which could initiate the polymerization of St.The polymer coils in the hexameric-structure could block the diffusion of the monomers into the ion-pairs and result in a stationary-conversion platform(SCP) with a relatively long duration.The increase of temperature seemed to shorten the duration of SCP due to time-temperature equivalence principle,thus accelerating the polymerization significantly.Then,the aggregates were dissociated completely into 6 equal polystyryllithium macromolecules,and the polymerization conti-nued again and completed rapidly.The addition of polar regulator(THF) into the system significantly accelerated the polymerization rate only by shortening SCP,not by changing the aggregation structure of n-butyllithium.

Abstract:Thermal bulk copolymerization of styrene (monomer 1) and maleic anhydride (monomer 2) was carried out in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) with a double helical ribbon-anchor impeller. A series of experimental runs under different operating conditions (average residence time, reaction temperature, and the composition in the inflow stream) were done, which showed that steady states could be approached. The effect of operating conditions on monomer conversion and copolymer composition was discussed. A CSTR model was established and the model parameters from the semicontinuous tests were used to predict conversions and copolymer compositions of the continuous process under transient and steady states. Kinetics from the semicontinuous bulk copolymerization were transferable to the continuous process. The modeling work for the continuous process showed that the same result as in a semicontinuous process could be obtained; the numerical method in which the gel effect on the copolymerization was incorporated exhibited excellent agreement between the model calculation and the experimental data. However, when using the assumption that k22 = 0, k21[M1] ≫ k12[M2], (RI/2kt)1/2 is a constant, and V is a constant, the predictions from the analytical solution to the model were in good agreement with the actual process data. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Kinetics Of Propylene Bulk Polymerization With A Spherical Ziegler-Natta Catalyst

Abstract:Experiments were carried out in a novel laboratory reactor with an on-line monitor and a control system to study the kinetics of bulk polymerization of propylene in both gas and liquid phases. Flory-Huggins equation was used to estimate the monomer concentration in the amorphous region of the polymer. The time evolution of polymerization rate under all conditions followed the same pattern, with a fast decay in the early stage of the polymerization and a relatively slow decay in the later stage. Two nth-order decay models were developed to describe the polymerization rates. Experimental data were used to estimate the model parameters. It was found that the apparent activation energies in both phases were similar to each other, while the decay order in the liquid phase was found to be 1.7 that was lower than that in the gas phase process. It implied that less thermal runaway was achieved in the liquid process. The model described the experimental results well.

Abstract:With the help of a self-invented microflow reactor containing a spiral tubular, the kinetics of the anionic bulk polymerization of styrene initiated by n-butyllithium and t-butyllithium at the different temperatures were investigated. The results confirmed that hexameric-aggregated n-butyllithium could initiate the polymerization of St and form the supramolecular structure of polystyryllithium at first. Then, the polymer coils could block the diffusion of the monomers into the ion-pairs and result in a stationary-conversion platform (SCP). The supramolecular would be disaggregated due to the energy accumulation. The higher the polymerization temperature is, the shorter SCP will be. The results also indicated a larger aggregation based on hexameric-aggregated n-butyllithiums existed. The results of AFM revealed that the diameter of such supramolecular aggregations ranged from 20–30 nm and 50–60 nm. Moreover, the structure of initiator aggregations, which had great effect on the initiating rate, was determined by the molecular structure of the initiator. Therefore, the findings could explain the wide difference in anionic polymerization rate using difference lithium initiators.

Abstract:Thermal bulk copolymerization of styrene (St) and maleic anhydride (MAH) has been carried out at 110-130 degrees C and up to around 55 wt % conversion in a stirred tank reactor with an anchor impeller to prepare the random copolymer of St-MAH (R-SMA). A series of experiments in semicontinuous monomer adding process were done to investigate the effects of operating condition on monomer conversion, copolymer composition, and its uniformity. It has been shown that a random copolymer with constant composition can be obtained by semicontinuous copolymerization. A reactor model was developed to simulate the copolymerization processes. The numerical method in which the gel effect on the copolymerization is incorporated has exhibited excellent agreement between the model calculation and the experimental data. However, when using the assumption that(1) k(22) = 0; (2) k(21)[M-1] >> k(12)[M-2]; and(3) (R-1/2h(t))(1/2) is a constant, an analytical solution to the model was found to be available also. Abstract:The use of α-diimine nickel catalysts to prepare high molecular weight branched polyethylene has matured, but few work reports consider high branch density and ultrahigh molecular weight. Herein, through a combination of asymmetric and steric control strategies, series of catalysts with a gradual increase number of N-aryl ortho-benzhydryl substituent were prepared. Through the analysis of polymerization results, it is believed that large steric hindrance plays a significant role in improving the catalyst thermal stability and reducing the temperature sensitivity of the product branch density and molecular weight. Surprisingly, Ni4, which has three large benzhydryl groups and one small methyl group at the four sites of the N-aryl ortho-position, has high chain growth rate and strong chain walking ability, allows it to prepare highly branched polyethylene with ultra-high molecular weight at higher temperatures with high activity. Moreover, this type of polyethylene material exhibits excellent strain recovery capabilities (98.2 %).

Abstract:This work confirms the new view of the initiation and propagation mechanism of the anionic polymerization previously proposed, based on the investigation of anionic bulk‐polymerization of styrene and α ‐methyl styrene with the help of a self designed microflow device and characterized by GPC and in situ 7 Li NMR. It was found that n ‐BuLi tended to form the hexameric‐aggregated structure and even to form the huge aggregated structure based on the former. These aggregations of initiators could directly initiate the anionic polymerization and form the supramolecule aggregations. The supramolecule aggregations inevitably blocked the diffusion of the monomers to the ion‐pairs and resulted in a stationary‐conversion platform. Then the aggregators were dissociated completely into equal binary‐aggregated species, and the polymerization continued again rapidly before the termination. Tetrahydrofuran (THF) acted as the electron donator, which could push the electron cloud to Li cation and make the aggregated ring of the active species rather loosened and facilitated the monomer to insert in. Therefore, a little THF can greatly promote the anionic polymerization. However, further addition of THF might block the channel between the ion‐pairs and decrease the propagation rate. It was also found that the aggregated structure of the active species during the anionic polymerization only depends on the initiator aggregations which were formed before the polymerization.

Abstract:Ultra high molecular weight polystyrene could be prepared by rare earth catalyst systems. Monte Carlo method simulates the kinetics of high viscous system of styrene bulk polymerization and verifies our coordination polymerization mechanism presumptions. The simulation indicates β-hydrogen elimination and monomer transfer reaction are important in the whole polymerization while the deactivation reaction and cocatalyst transfer reaction are in small possibilities. Polymers containing double bond end are regarded as macro-monomers that can be initiated into active chain. Monte Carlo simulation proves such presumption and calculates the average branch degree of 0.5.

Abstract:The styrene microemulsion with high monomer content was stabilized by an emulsifier with a Y structure. When the microemulsion polymerization was initiated with azobisisobutylronitrile (AIBN) or benzoyl peroxide (BPO), a plateau of polymerization rate was observed at low initiator and high monomer content. Zn the plateau, it was the number of growing polymer particles that was kept constant, instead of the number of total polymer particles. The length of the plateau of R-p is reduced with the increase of initiator concentration and the decrease of monomer concentration, and even disappears at very low monomer content and very high initiator concentration. Under the similar condition, the polymerization rate and the molecular weight of polystyrene produced are both lower when the initiator is BPO. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
Studies on Anionic Continuous Solution Copolymerization of Butadiene/Styrene with N-Buli Initiator

Abstract:The anionic solution copolymerization of butadiene/styrene with n-butyllithium(n-BuLi) initiator, tetrahydrofuran(THF) modifier, and cyclohexane solvent, was studied. The study was carried out experimentally in an agitated tank reactor of 2 liters employing continuous operation mode. The reaction conversion rate of monomers, molecular weight and distribution of the copolymer, and micro-structure of the copolymer were analyzed by gas chromatograph, gel permeation chromatograph, and nuclear magnetic resonance, respectively. The effects of the mean residence time and the THF/Li+ ratio on the reaction conversion rate, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution, and the micro-structure of copolymer were investigated. The results showed that a randomized copolymer of butadiene/styrene with proper micro-structure can be obtained by anionic continuous solution copolymerization of butadiene/styrene with n-butyllithium(n-BuLi) initiator, tetrahydrofuran(THF) modifier, and cyclohexane solvent. The mean residence time has remarkable effect on the reaction conversion rate, and has effect to a certain extent on the micro-structure of copolymer. The effect of the THF/Li+ ratio on the copolymerization rate of butadiene and styrene are notable. The reasonable THF/Li+ ratio was found to be 70. The effect of the THF/Li+ ratio on the combined styrene is significant. The effect of the THF/Li+ ratio has effect to a certain extent on 1,2- structure, 1,4- structure , and cis/trans-structure of the copolymer. The results also showed that the effect of the THF/Li+ on the average molecular weight of copolymer is considerable, and that the effect of THF/Li+ ratio on the molecular weight distribution is not significant.

Abstract:ABSTRACTIn this study, styrene–isoprene diblock and multiblock copolymers were synthesized with n‐butyllithium as the initiator, in an intermeshing, corotating twin‐screw extruder. The diameter (D) of this extruder was 36 mm, and the ratio of length/diameter was 56. The weight content of polyisoprene in these copolymers was above 50% although in the past studies it had not been possible to accomplish levels higher than 30%. Gel permeation chromatography results of samples and their degraded products show that there is only one long block polystyrene in the diblock copolymer chains; while in the multiblock copolymer molecules, there is a long block and large numbers of small blocks. Dynamic mechanical analysis and transmission electron microscopy show that the two phases in the diblock copolymer are completely incompatible, leading to sharp phase separation. In the multiblock copolymer, the two phases are partly compatible without an obvious phase boundary. The successful syntheses of styrene/isoprene diblock and multiblock copolymers with high‐isoprene contents provide a novel method to synthesize polystyrene rubbers and styrene–diene–styrene thermoplastic elastomers. Traditionally, these products were mainly synthesized by solution polymerization. The present work in this article provides the possibility to synthesize them with very little or no solvent using bulk polymerization. Further Studies on the Anionic Copolymerization of Styrene and Glycidyl Methacrylate in Toluene

Abstract:Sequential anionic copolymerization of styrene and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was performed with the protection of argon under normal pressure, where styrene, GMA, toluene, THF, n-butyllithium and a small amount of lithium chloride (LiCl) were used as first monomer, second monomer, solvent, polar reagent, initiator and additive, respectively. Polystyrene-b-poly(glycidyl methacrylate) diblock copolymers (PS-b-PGMA) with well-defined structure and narrow molecular weight distribution were prepared by the copolymerization reaction of poly(styryl)lithium with GMA under certain temperatures. The copolymers were characterized using gel permeation chromatography (GPC), 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, thin layer chromatography (TLC) and hydrochloric acid-dioxane argentimetric methods. The effects of additives, copolymerization temperature and THF dosage on the copolymerization were studied. No chain transfer reaction of anionic polymerization of styrene in toluene was observed. Slightly broader molecular weight distribution of PS-b-PGMA was observed with the increase the GMA repeat units. Using THF/toluene blend solvent could reduce the polydispersity index (Mw/Mn) and dissolve the copolymer better than toluene alone. Lower temperature ( -40 degrees C) and LiCl are required to prepare PS-b-PGMA with narrower molecular weight distribution.

Abstract:The morphology of an anionic emulsifier/long chain fatty alcohol complex and its change during the formation process were studied. The main factors affecting the morphology, such as various types of anionic emulsifiers and fatty alcohols, their molar ratios and the addition of styrene, were investigated. It was discovered that the rod-like particles of the complex had a length of 0.1-0.2 mum and diameter of 0.01-0.02 mum. A model of a rod-like particle or molecular aggregate was proposed. Both water-soluble and oil-soluble initiators were used to study the kinetics of styrene mini-emulsion polymerization and polystyrene latex size characteristics.
Effect of solvent on the initiation mechanism of living anionic polymerization of styrene: A computational study

Abstract:For living anionic polymerization (LAP), solvent has a great influence on both reaction mechanism and kinetics. In this work, by using the classical butyl lithium-styrene polymerization as a model system, the effect of solvent on the mechanism and kinetics of LAP was revealed through a strategy combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations and kinetic modeling. In terms of mechanism, it is found that the stronger the solvent polarity, the more electrons transfer from initiator to solvent through detailed energy decomposition analysis of electrostatic interactions between initiator and solvent molecules. Furthermore, we also found that the stronger the solvent polarity, the higher the monomer initiation energy barrier and the smaller initiation rate coefficient. Counterintuitively, initiation is more favorable at lower temperatures based on the calculated results of ΔGTS . Finally, the kinetic characteristics in different solvents were further examined by kinetic modeling. It is found that in benzene and n-pentane, the polymerization rate exhibits first-order kinetics. While, slow initiation and fast propagation were observed in THF due to the slow free ion formation rate, leading to a deviation from first-order kinetics.

Abstract:A mathematical model for free radical polymerizations initiated by a linear bifunctional initiator was described in detail from the fundamental reactions based on the polymerization mechanism and species balance, considering the volume contraction and thermal initiation. The model presented herein utilized diffusion-controlled rate constants based on free volume theory and employed the method of moments to solve the various species concentrations, polymerization rate, molecular weight and polydispersity, considering gel effect, glass effect and cage effect. Conversion, average molecular weight and polydispersity at various initiator [2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(2-ethylhexoylperoxy)hexane] (DMDEHPH) concentrations and temperatures were calculated with the mathematical model of styrene free radical bulk polymerizations with the linear bifunctional initiator. Model predictions agreed well with experimental data. The various species concentrations were also calculated. The model demonstrated that plot of every species concentration vs. conversion had a maximum value for either various polymer or radical concentrations. Based on model predictions, the biradical concentration was several orders of magnitude smaller than monoradical concentration while polymer concentrations were only different in several times. The plots at various initiator concentrations had no cross-points. And the higher the initiator concentration was, the higher both the radical and polymer concentrations were. The plots had cross-points at various temperatures. And the lower the temperature, the higher the radical and polymer concentrations at gel-effect phase, while the lower the temperature, the smaller the radical and polymer concentrations before and after gel-effect phase.

Abstract:It was further confirmed through the anionic bulk polymerization of a-methylstyrene (mSt) initiated by n-butyl lithium (n-BuLi)/tetrahydrofuran (THF) that the aggregators of n-BuLi could initiate anionic polymerization, which resulted in forming of the supramolecules, then these supramolecules would be dissociated during the further polymerization. The results have further verified the new initiating mechanism of anionic polymerization proposed previously. With the in situ Li-7-NMR during the polymerization of mSt under D-benzene as solvent,THF as regulator and n-BuLi as initiator, it was further confirmed that in the system, there existed a conversion process of the initiator aggregators from pluralistic aggregated structure to the binary one. Meanwhile, in situ Li-7-NMR of isoprene polymerization under D-benzene solution initiated by n-BuLi also verified the conversion process of the initiator aggregators. It was also found that when a small amount of THF was mixed in the mSt polymerization system, the two or three of hexameric aggregators might be connected by THF. However, these connected aggregators would be dissociated preceding that of hexameric aggregators themselves. Furthermore, with the increasing of n-BuLi/THF (mole ratio) from I I to I 5, the huge aggregators of n-BuLi could be changed into hexameric ones.
