Abstract:Manganese oxides are important materials in many applications. We describe, for the first time, the facile one-pot synthesis of highly crystallined lambda-MnO2 nanodisks assembled from nanoparticles through a novel wet chemical route. Morphology evolutions, magnetic properties, and phase transitions are also studied by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron rnicroscopy and thermal gravimetric analysis. A mechanism for the formation of the lambda-MnO2 nanodisks as well as their inner structure is proposed based on controlled experiments. The key to the successful preparation of this novel MnO2 nanostructure has been a synergic control of a surfactant, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and a solvent, dimethyl sulfoxide, capable of stabilizing the microreactors and promoting the assembly of manganese nanoparticles.

Abstract:Spinel NiMn2O4, CoMn2O4, NiFe2O4 and CoFe2O4 hollow microspheres are prepared through an easy and general approach. The preparation procedures include the one-pot hydrothermal treatment of mixed metal salts and glucose, and subsequent calcination. The different penetration ability of Mn2+ and Fe3+ precursor ions into the interior of glucose-derived carbon microspheres results in single-shelled manganites and triple-shelled ferrites, respectively. Investigations on the electrochemical behaviors of the as-prepared four bimetal oxides show that they possess good supercapacitive properties in aqueous electrolytes.

Abstract:A “direct mixing” synthesis strategy has been demonstrated for the first time that allows fast (e.g., 0.5 h) synthesis of bulk quantity of thermally stable and highly porous metal–organic coordination polymers (MOCP) nanocrystals (30–150 nm diameter) at room temperature with high yield (∼90%). The MOCP materials constructed from Zn(NO3)2·6H2O and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (H2BDC) were characterized with scanning electron microscope, powder X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, FT-IR, and volumetric Ar adsorption/desorption. The direct mixing method also produced a highly porous nanometer-sized MOCP material, which is likely to be a new phase that has not been discovered by the more commonly used “diffusion” approach. “Soft” and “hard” template approaches were used to successfully manipulate the morphology of MOCP materials at nanometer scale. In addition, water molecules were shown to play an important role in the synthesis and eventual composition of MOCP materials. Exposure of MOCP materials to water resulted in dramatic drop in surface area and porosity because of possible hydrolysis of the framework. An acid hydrolysis process of MOCP materials was also revealed in which the crystals could be hydrolyzed back into metal salts and organic acid under acid treatment.

Abstract:This review briefly summarizes our recent progresses in the controlled synthesis of single crystalline iron oxides hollow nanostructures. Using both phosphate and sulfate ions as mineralizing agents, by controlling the reaction conditions, such as the reaction temperature, reaction time, etc., we have successfully synthesized a series of single crystalline of α-Fe 2 O 3 hollow nanostructures including nanotubes, nanorings and tube-in-tubes, with controlled sizes and surface structures by a facile hydrothermal method. In addition to the synthetic protocols, we propose a novel mechanism—coordination assisted preferential dissolution mechanism, which is responsible for the formation of non-layered nanotube/nanoring. With the as-prepared α-Fe 2 O 3 products as precursors, single crystalline Fe 3 O 4 and γ-Fe 2 O 3 nanotubes/nanorings were also prepared through a gas-phase reduction process. Besides, the magnetic properties of a single Fe 3 O 4 nanoring were also investigated using electron tomography technique.

Abstract:Fluorescence imaging in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000-1400 nm) is attracting extensive attention. Mn6+ doped BaSO4 with broadband emission from 900 nm to 1400 nm is emerging as a new class of NIR phosphor for fluorescence imaging. Manganese has diverse valence states, thus it is difficult to prevent valence change of Mn6+ during traditional synthesis process. In this work, BaSO4:Mn6+ nanoparticles with uniform size and morphology were first successfully prepared through a fast liquid-solid solution route at room temperature. The nanoparticles exhibit broadband NIR emission from Mn6+ when excited by 808 nm lasers. This convenient strategy, based on an efficient anion exchange reaction, is proved effective for synthesizing nano-sized materials. The results reveal that our strategy has great potential in fabricating special valence state ion doped nanomaterials.

Abstract:Black powder MnOOH can be oxidized or reduced to generate raw materials for producing zinc manganese iron oxide magnetic ferrite materials in electronics industry.KMnO4 and MnSO4 were used as raw materials to synthesize MnOOH nanorods in mixed solvent of water and propanol.The phase,structure,morphology and composition of the products were analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction,differential thermal analysis,infrared spectrometry,scanning electron microscopy,transmission electron microscopy,and energy dispersive spectrometry.The influence of experiment conditions,including reaction temperature,time and solvent,on the phase and shape of nanosized MnOOH were studied.Results show that as-prepared MnOOH nanorods with a length of several microns and diameter of 50 nm could be obtained via solvothermal route at a temperatures of 140-220 ℃ and time of 6-12 h.Propanol played a significant role in the formation of nano-sized MnOOH.

Abstract:Microwave-assisted one-pot, one-step, calcination-free synthesis of nanosized Mn 3 O 4 is reported using only benzylamine and manganese acetate. Benzylamine in this protocol plays a vital role for efficient microwave synthesis. This microwave method enables the synthesis of nanosized Mn 3 O 4 in just few hours only in a single step eliminating the need of calcinations of any intermediate. The synthesized nanosized Mn 3 O 4 was analyzed by XRD, HRTEM, EDAX, and Raman spectroscopy. The catalytic and electrochemical properties of as-synthesized Mn 3 O 4 were investigated. In galvanostatic charge–discharge experiments, after 800 cycles, more than 89% capacitance was retained for electrodes made by as synthesized Mn 3 O 4 nanomaterials indicating its very good stability. In the catalytic conversion of cinnamyl alcohol to cinnamaldehyde via oxidation, using as prepared nanosized Mn 3 O 4 as a catalyst, it displays effective catalytic properties. A probable mechanical study of its formation was also envisaged. This synthesis protocol is additive-free, occurs in a short time, is facile, is energy efficient, and eliminates the use of many chemicals. These silent features make these reported protocols economically viable and environmentally benign which adhere to the principles of Green Chemistry.

Abstract:Birnessite flower-like and α-type tubular MnO(2) nanostructures were selectively synthesized through simple decomposition of KMnO(4) under hydrochloric acid condition by controlling reaction temperature using a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The as-prepared samples were characterized in detail by various techniques including X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, and Raman scattering spectroscopy. While the growth of flower-like birnessite-MnO(2) might follow a widely accepted Ostwald ripening process, we proposed a formation mechanism of the nanotubular α-MnO(2) based on our evidence, which was assembly of nanorods through an "oriented attachment" process.

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) nanostructures have drawn continuous research attention because of their unique electrical, optical, and magnetic properties different from that of bulk and nanoparticles, as well as their potential applications in mesoscopic research and nanodevices. The main challenge in this area is how to precisely control the sizes, dimensionalities, compositions, and crystal structures in nanoscale, which may serve as a powerful tool for the tailoring of physical/chemical properties of materials in a controllable way. Here, we review the advances in the solution-based routes to prepare 1D nanostructures. Particularly, three systems of MnO2, rare-earth compounds, and silicates have been chosen to show the synthetic strategy under hydrothermal conditions. As the main theme, a rolling mechanism has been given special attention to present a relative general understanding of the growth of various transition-metal oxide (TMO) 1D nanostructures under solution conditions.

Abstract:Noble metal nanoparticles with a core-shell construction not only have great potential in diverse applications, but also can serve as starting templates for the fabrication of noble metal nanomaterials with controllable structures. Herein, we present a one-pot route with remarkable simplicity and universality for the synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles with a core-shell construction. This strategy rationally makes use of the difference in reduction kinetics of various noble metal precursors in oleylamine, whereby one metal precursor with fast reduction kinetics is reduced first to form seed particles for the subsequent nucleation and growth of other metals, resulting in an overall one-step formation of core-shell structured noble metal nanoparticles with single or multiple shells. Core-shell noble metal nanoparticles with Ag or Au residing in the core regions or core-shell-shell noble metal nanoparticles with Au and Ag residing in the core and inner shell regions are prepared in this way. This facile one-pot approach may provide a promising method with ease of control for creating heterogeneously structured nanomaterials.

Abstract:Synthesis of nano-LiMnPO4 from MnPO4·H2O prepared by mechanochemistry is attempted. SEM, TEM, XRD and TG/DSC are performed to characterize the products. The results show that the primary particles are loosely aggregated with an average particle size of 40-50 nm. The morphology and particle size distribution of nano-LiMnPO4 preserves those of MnPO4·H2O. This paves a promising way of high efficiency, easy accessibility and speediness to prepare nano-LiMnPO4.

Abstract:On basis of the redox reaction between MnO4− and Mn2+, a facile hydrothermal method combined with the adjustment of pH value in the reaction system has been employed to synthesize single-crystal γ-MnOOH nanorods, and square-like Mn3O4 nanoparticles. Additionally, single-crystalline β-MnO2 and Mn2O3 nanorods can be obtained after subsequent calcinations of the as-prepared γ-MnOOH nanostructures at 300°C and 600°C, respectively. Furthermore, electrochemical property of as-obtained β-MnO2 is also studied.

Abstract:Alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-MnO(2) single-crystal nanowires/nanorods with different aspect ratios have been successfully prepared by a common hydrothermal method based on the redox reactions of MnO(4)(-) and/or Mn(2+). The influences of oxidant, temperature, and inorganic cation (NH(4)(+) and K(+)) template concentrations on the morphology and crystallographic forms of the final products are discussed in this paper. It is interesting to find that all the MnO(2) one-dimensional nanostructures have a similar formation process: delta-MnO(2), which has a layer structure, serves as an important intermediate to other forms of MnO(2), and is believed to be responsible for the initial formation of MnO(2) one-dimensional nanostructures. A rolling mechanism has been proposed based on the results of the series of TEM images and XRD patterns of the intermediate.
