Abstract:Heterogeneous catalytic reactions involved in the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) or solution-liquid-solid (SLS) growth of 1-D nanostructures have been intensively investigated in recent years. But how to control the homogeneous catalytic route and apply it to design new structures of materials has rarely been discussed. In this work, a homogeneous catalyst was successfully controlled via changing the catalyst feed way, and three novel alpha-MnO2 hierarchical structures, namely, urchin-like structures, sphere networks, and nanowire networks, were selectively synthesized at room temperature. beta-MnO2 nanorods were also prepared via this method at higher temperatures. The present work indicates that the homogeneous catalytic route not only can produce one certain structure of inorganic materials but also can be rationally controlled and therefore used to grow more new structures. On the other hand, this homogeneous catalytic method is a solution-based self-assembly route, providing a simple, mild, and template-free way to the fabrication of hierarchical structures.

Abstract:A facile solid-phase conversion route is proposed to fabricate a micro-framework of alpha-MnO2 with a nanofibrous structure and high porosity. The fabrication is achieved by a three-step process using a preformed manganese tartrate with a rectangular framework as the precursor followed by thermal annealing and hydrothermal oxidation to form the final nanofibrous structure. Evolution of the phase and the morphology are characterized by FESEM, XRD, TG-DTA, and TEM measurements. The electrochemically active material alpha-MnO2 exhibits both attractive stability of the Coulombic efficiency after long-term cyclic charging/discharging and acceptable specific capacitance. Abstract:Developing facial synthetic routes for fabrication of multimetallic nanocatalysts with open porous morphology, tunable composition and tailored crystalline structure is a big challenge for fabrication of low-cost electrocatalysts. Here we report on the synthesis of single-crystalline dendritic bimetallic and multimetallic nanocubes via a solvothermal co-reduction method. These cubes show highly porous, complex 3D inner connections but single-crystalline structure. Tuning the reduction kinetics of metal precursors and introducing galvanic reaction at the active sites during growth were believed to be the keys for the formation of such unique nanostructure. Electro-catalytic oxygen reduction (ORR) and methanol oxidation (MOR) on these catalysts showed dramatic enhancements for both cathodic and anodic electrocatalysis in fuel cells, which were attributed to their unique morphology and crystalline structure, as well as synergetic effect of the multi-metallic components. This work uncovers the formation mechanism of such complex single-crystalline dendritic multimetallic nanocrystals and offers a promising synthetic strategy for geometric and crystalline control of multimetallic nanocrystals with tailored physical and chemical properties, which will benefit the development of clean energy.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:A lot of effort has been focused on the integration of nanorods/nanowire as building blocks into three-dimensional (3D) complex superstructures. But, the development of simple and effective methods for creating novel assemblies of self-supported patterns of hierarchical architectures to designed materials using a suitable chemical method is important to technology and remains an attractive, but elusive goal.RESULTS:The hierarchical structure of Mn3O4 with radiated spherulitic nanorods was prepared via a simple solution-based coordinated route in the presence of macrocycle polyamine, hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradeca-4,11-diene (CT) with the assistance of thiourea as an additive.CONCLUSION:This approach opens a new and facile route for the morphogenesis of Mn3O4 material and it might be extended as a novel synthetic method for the synthesis of other inorganic semiconducting nanomaterials such as metal chalcogenide semiconductors with novel morphology and complex form, since it has been shown that thiourea can be used as an effective additive and the number of such water-soluble macrocyclic polyamines also makes it possible to provide various kinds of ligands for different metals in homogeneous water system.

Abstract:Large-scale, uniform and regular oxide/sulfide core-shell nanostructures and nonlayered sulfide nanotubes, such as ZnO/ZnS, SnO2/SnS2, MnO2/MnS2 core-shell nanostructures, as well as ZnS and SnS2 nanotubes, have been prepared by a versatile approach based on a thioglycolic acid assisted hydrothermal process and subsequent NaOH treatment. The above-mentioned nanostructures have been characterized by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Moreover, the role of thioglycolic acid for the formation of oxide/sulfide core-shell and nonlayered sulfide nanotubes has been identified. Finally, the formation mechanism for the derived nanostructures has been phenomenologically presented.

Abstract:Herein, hierarchical hollow β-MnO2 microspheres assembled by nanorod subunits are facilely fabricated using a one-step hydrothermal approach, which serve as electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The influences of the reaction temperature and H2SO4 concentration on the crystalline phase and morphology of products are studied. Impressively, detailed characterizations reveal that the hollow β-MnO2 microspheres can be formed through a self-templated process by phase transformation, in which solid γ-MnO2 microspheres are first generated and then convert to hollow β-MnO2 microspheres. Owing to their unique hollow shape and robust O2 adsorption ability, the hollow β-MnO2 microspheres show superior ORR performance (a more positive half-wave potential of ~ 0.69 V, a larger limiting current density of 5.04 mA cm−1, and better stability) compared with commercial β-MnO2 particles. The insights afforded in this study offer positive guidance for the rational design of hollow Mn-based materials.

As-prepared non-precious metal nanostructures modified electrode exhibits high and stable catalytic activity, and fast electrochemical kinetics. Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials enabled the creation of hybrid heterostructures with a variety of properties. Here, inspired by the “core–shell” structures, we report the synthesis of a hierarchical structure based on the growth of 2D Mn/Ni(OH)x sheets on the CeO2 spheres, so called sheet-on-sphere heterostructures. The supported 2D sheets serve as robust support for the immobilization of metal nanoparticles. The as-formed hetero structures offer a robust catalyst system and display excellent catalytic performances toward the 4-nitrophenol reduction in liquid-phase and CO oxidation in gas phase. Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) nanostructures have drawn continuous research attention because of their unique electrical, optical, and magnetic properties different from that of bulk and nanoparticles, as well as their potential applications in mesoscopic research and nanodevices. The main challenge in this area is how to precisely control the sizes, dimensionalities, compositions, and crystal structures in nanoscale, which may serve as a powerful tool for the tailoring of physical/chemical properties of materials in a controllable way. Here, we review the advances in the solution-based routes to prepare 1D nanostructures. Particularly, three systems of MnO2, rare-earth compounds, and silicates have been chosen to show the synthetic strategy under hydrothermal conditions. As the main theme, a rolling mechanism has been given special attention to present a relative general understanding of the growth of various transition-metal oxide (TMO) 1D nanostructures under solution conditions.

Abstract:Alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-MnO(2) single-crystal nanowires/nanorods with different aspect ratios have been successfully prepared by a common hydrothermal method based on the redox reactions of MnO(4)(-) and/or Mn(2+). The influences of oxidant, temperature, and inorganic cation (NH(4)(+) and K(+)) template concentrations on the morphology and crystallographic forms of the final products are discussed in this paper. It is interesting to find that all the MnO(2) one-dimensional nanostructures have a similar formation process: delta-MnO(2), which has a layer structure, serves as an important intermediate to other forms of MnO(2), and is believed to be responsible for the initial formation of MnO(2) one-dimensional nanostructures. A rolling mechanism has been proposed based on the results of the series of TEM images and XRD patterns of the intermediate.

Abstract:On basis of the redox reaction between MnO4− and Mn2+, a facile hydrothermal method combined with the adjustment of pH value in the reaction system has been employed to synthesize single-crystal γ-MnOOH nanorods, and square-like Mn3O4 nanoparticles. Additionally, single-crystalline β-MnO2 and Mn2O3 nanorods can be obtained after subsequent calcinations of the as-prepared γ-MnOOH nanostructures at 300°C and 600°C, respectively. Furthermore, electrochemical property of as-obtained β-MnO2 is also studied.

Abstract:An efficient preparation and local coordination environment regulation of isolated single-atom sites catalysts (ISASC) for improved activity is still challenging. Herein, we develop a solid phase thermal diffusion strategy to synthesize Mn ISASC on highly uniform nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes by employing MnO2 nanowires@ZIF-8 core-shell structure. Under high-temperature, the Mn species break free from core-MnO2 lattice, which will be trapped by carbon defects derived from shell-ZIF-8 carbonization, and immobilized within carbon substrate. Furthermore, the poly-dispersed Mn sites with two nitrogen-coordinated centers can be controllably renovated into four-nitrogen-coordinated Mn sites using NH3 treatment technology. Both experimental and computational investigations indicate that the symmetric coordinated Mn sites manifest outstanding oxygen reduction activity and superior stability in alkaline and acidic solutions. This work not only provides efficient way to regulate the coordination structure of ISASC to improve catalytic performance but also paves the way to reveal its significant promise for commercial application.

Abstract:Manganese dioxide (β-MnO2) nanorods have been synthesized by thermal decomposition of a template precursor of MnOOH, which was obtained by hydrothermal treatment of KMnO4 in an aqueous ethanol solution. Through X-ray diffraction and electron microscopic characterizations, the as-prepared β-MnO2 nanorods were shown to be phase-pure single crystallites with diameters of 30–400nm and lengths of tens of micrometers. We demonstrate catalytic efficiency of the as-prepared one-dimensional β-MnO2 nanorods as catalysts in the oxidation of methylene blue dye in the presence of H2O2; the catalytic activity is much higher than that of commercial micro-sized β-MnO2 powders.

Abstract:Layered δ-MnO2 (birnessites) are ubiquitous in nature and have also been reported to work as promising water oxidation catalysts or rechargeable alkali-ion battery cathodes when fabricated under appropriate conditions. Although tremendous effort has been spent on resolving the structure of natural/synthetic layered δ-MnO2 in the last few decades, no conclusive result has been reached. In this Article, we report an environmentally friendly route to synthesizing homogeneous Cu-rich layered δ-MnO2 nanoflowers in large scale. The local and average structure of synthetic Cu-rich layered δ-MnO2 has been successfully resolved from combined Mn/Cu K-edge extended X-ray fine structure spectroscopy and X-ray and neutron total scattering analysis. It is found that appreciable amounts (∼8%) of Mn vacancies are present in the MnO2 layer and Cu2+ occupies the interlayer sites above/below the vacant Mn sites. Effective hydrogen bonding among the interlayer water molecules and adjacent layer O ions has also been observed for the first time. These hydrogen bonds are found to play the key role in maintaining the intermediate and long-range stacking coherence of MnO2 layers. Quantitative analysis of the turbostratic stacking disorder in this compound was achieved using a supercell approach coupled with anisotropic particle-size-effect modeling. The present method is expected to be generally applicable to the structural study of other technologically important nanomaterials.

Abstract:The controllable self-assembly of nanomaterials remains a great challenge in nanotechnological applications, especially for the hierarchical structure with high complexity. Herein, by taking the advantage of highly dispersed metal nodes and mild thermal stability of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the self-assembly of nanoparticles is directed from MOFs to construct CuO hierarchical structures, which have an inherited octahedral framework consisting of the microspheres, nanowires, and polyhedrons, respectively. Unlike the conventional self-assembly in a solution media (such as solvent and molten solid), the assembly in this work is the first demonstration through a solution-free approach. Moreover, compared to the general MOF-derived CuO octahedron, the assembled hierarchical CuO structure exhibits much enhanced catalytic activity in CO oxidation thanks to the exposure of more active sites during the assembly.

Abstract:Single-crystalline nanorods of β-MnO2, α-Mn2O3 and Mn3O4 were successfully synthesized via the heat-treatment of γ-MnOOH nanorods, which were prepared through a hydrothermal method in advance. The calcination process of γ-MnOOH nanorods was studied with the help of Thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray powder diffraction. When the calcinations were conducted in air from 250 to 1050°C, the precursor γ-MnOOH was first changed to β-MnO2, then to α-Mn2O3 and finally to Mn3O4. When calcined in N2 atmosphere, γ-MnOOH was directly converted into Mn3O4 at as low as 500°C. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM were also used to characterize the products. The obtained manganese oxides maintain the one-dimensional morphology similar to the precursor γ-MnOOH nanorods. Further experiments show that the as-prepared manganese oxide nanorods have catalytic effect on the oxidation and decomposition of the methylene blue (MB) dye with H2O2.

Abstract:Self-assembled nanocrystal (NC) superlattices are emerging as an important class of materials with rationally modulated properties. Engineering the nanoscale structure of constituent building blocks as well as the mesoscale morphology of NC superlattices is a crucial step in widening their range of applications. Here, we report a template-assisted epitaxial assembly strategy, enabling growth of freestanding, carbon-coated tubular monolayer superlattices (TMSLs). Specifically, we design and construct TMSLs of hollow Mn3O4 NCs (h-Mn3O4-TMSLs) by exploiting structural evolution of MnO NCs. The tubular superlattices obtained possess a number of unique and advantageous structural features unavailable in conventional NC superlattices, rendering them particularly attractive for energy conversion applications. We demonstrate this by employing h-Mn3O4-TMSLs as electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction, the catalytic performance of which is comparable to that of state-of-the-art Pt/C catalysts and superior to that of most manganese oxide-based catalysts reported.
