Abstract:Quaternary CuInSSe nanocrystals have been synthesized by a colloidal route using commercially available materials. Oleylamine is used as the solvent and capping agent. It is proved that the nanocrystals are alloyed nanocrystals rather than a mixture of CuInS2 and CuInSe2 nanocystals. Furthermore, their formation is regarded to involve the nucleation of CuS and the subsequent reaction between CuS nuclei and remaining precursors. It is also found that the composition and structure of the nanocrystals can be influenced significantly by the reaction temperatures and time. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:New chemical reactions and synthetic systems are of key importance for materials fabrication. In this work, we reported a facile and effective octadecylamine (ODA) synthetic system for various nanocrystals including metals, mixed metal oxides, metal/metal oxide heterostructured nanocrystals, intermetallics, and alloys. We found that the products were mainly determined by metal ions used in our synthetic system: noble metal ions led to the formation of metals; two kinds of non-noble metal ions led to the formation of mixed metal oxides; silver ions and non-noble metal ions led to the formation of metal/metal oxide heterostructured nanocrystals; non-noble metal ions and noble metal (excluding Ag) ions led to the formation of intermetallics and alloys. The difference was attributed to different ability to attract electrons from ODA solvent among these metal ions. This effective system provides a general strategy for various nanocrystals which would find potential applications in many significant fields.

Abstract:The synthesis of phase-pure, narrow-size-distributed and highly stable Cu2O nanocrystals is reported, which can be processed as hole-transporting layers (HTLs) in solution-processed optoelectronic devices. The synthesis is based on a thermal decomposition process with a ligand protection strategy. The reactivity of precursor can be tuned by simply modulating the concentration of oleylamine in non-coordinated solvent, resulting in effectively controlling the size and size distribution of Cu2O nanocrystals. Combined with ligand protection strategy of using lithium stearate and moderate reaction temperature of 170 degrees C, in situ aggregation of Cu2O nanocrystals could be inhibited, exhibiting excellent stability in hexane for several months. The resulting phase-pure colloidal Cu2O particles (after ozone-treatment) were applied as HTLs in polymer light-emitting diodes, the performance of which are comparable to that of the poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) based devices.
Phase-Selective Synthesis and Self-Assembly of Monodisperse Copper Sulfide Nanocrystals

Abstract:Single-crystalline, monodisperse copper sulfide nanocrystals with controlled sizes, shapes. and phases were successfully synthesized via a simple, low-cost, and environmentally friendly chemical reaction of CuCl, and S in oleylamine at 100-180 degrees C. It was found that the molar ratios of [CuCl2]:[S] played the critical role for the control of the sizes, shapes, and phases of copper sulfide nanocrystals. The hexagonal CuS nanodisks, hexagonal CuS nanoribbons consisting of face-to-face stacked nanodisks, and monoclinic Cu1.75S nanoribbons consisting of face-to-face stacked nanodisks were obtained when the molar ratios of [CuCl2]:[S] were 1:1, 2:3, and 2:1, respectively. It was believed that the van der Waals force and dipole-dipole interaction were responsible for the self-assembly of copper sulfide nanodisks. Finally, the copper sulfide nanocrystals were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron micrscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared, and its growth mechanism was primarily discussed.

Abstract:Monodisperse CuS nanocrystals were prepared by the hot-injection chemical reaction method using copper chloride, sulfur and oleylamine as reactants. The size, shape and stability of CuS nanocrystals were tuned by the addition of other surfactants including benzylamine, oleic acid, stearic acid, dodecanethiol, tri-octylphosphine oxide and alkylamines with C8RC16(C8 being a 8-carbon chain). Furthermore, the as-synthesized CuS nanocrystals can be self-assembled into snakelike or cornlike nanostructures under the control of some conditions. Finally, the morphology and structure of the CuS nanocrystals were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM).

Abstract:Luminescent CuInS2 nanocrystals have been synthesized in dodecanethiol using air-stable precursors. The nanocrystals were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The optical properties of the CuInS2 nanocrystals can be controlled by changing the reaction conditions, such as reaction time, temperature, and addition of ligands. It was found that the steady-state photoluminescence spectrum of the close-packed CuInS2 nanocrystals on glass substrate peaked at longer wavelength than that of the colloidal ones and the close-packed nanocrystals possessed a shorter luminescence decay time. This behavior was explained on the basis of Förster resonant energy transfer due to the shorter distance between nanocrystals on substrate.

Abstract:CdS and alloyed CdS x Se 1−x nanocrystals were prepared by a simple noninjection method without nucleation initiators. Oleic acid (OA) was used to stabilize the growth of the CdS nanocrystals. The size of the CdS nanocrystals can be tuned by changing the OA/Cd molar ratios. On the basis of the successful synthesis of CdS nanocrystals, alloyed CdS x Se 1−x nanocrystals can also be prepared by simply replacing certain amount of S precursor with equal amount of Se precursor, verified by TEM, XRD, EDX as well as UV–Vis absorption analysis. The optical properties of the alloyed CdS x Se 1−x nanocrystals can be tuned by adjusting the S/Se feed molar ratios. This synthetic approach developed is highly reproducible and can be readily scaled up for potential industrial production.

Abstract:The synthesis of copper nanowires (CuNWs) using modified polyols with hexadecylamine or octadecylamine as capping agents, known for their ease of operation, rapid reaction, and suitability for mass production, often encounters challenges such as the presence of copper particles, numerous copper nanorods, difficulty in purifying organic compounds, and air instability as by-products. In addressing these issues, this study introduces an innovative multiphase ultrasonic-assisted separation method. By utilizing ultrasound to accelerate the dissolution of hexadecylamine and facilitate the separation movement of CuNWs and by-products in hydrophilic and hydrophobic phases, the aim of achieving high purification of CuNWs is realized. Through the introduction of an ultra-thin hexadecylamine layer ( 3.5 nm) on the surface of CuNWs and leveraging the active adsorption of silver seed crystals, combined with the control CuNWs reaction concentration, silver-coated CuNWs with a dense and uniform surface thickness of 12–15 nm are obtained. By enhancing purity, stability, and cost-effectiveness, this research represents a significant advancement in the field of one-dimensional nanowires and their devices.

Abstract:Polyol synthesis route, which is a popular and effective way of synthesizing noble metal nanocrystals, has been employed for the fabrication of Cu 2 O nanospheres. With this method, the particle size of the product can be readily tailored by tuning the concentration of Cu(NO 3 ) 2 and/or poly(vinyl pyrrolidone). It has been demonstrated that the main driving force of this reaction is the difference in redox potentials between ethylene glycol (EG) and NO 3 − , and not that between those of EG and Cu 2+ . The resulting Cu 2 O nanospheres were used as a solid precursor for generating hollow nanospheres of copper sulfide with different sulfiding degrees, as well as CuO, via suitable chemical conversions. The Kirkendall effect determined the final hollow structure. The results in this paper provide a good example of the broadening of the scope of application of polyol synthesis route and may supply a thinking clue for the synthesis of other oxide materials.

Abstract:We report an unparallel route to synthesize ZnO nanocrystallines by using dodecythiol as ligand. Different from other reported solvotherml synthetic routes, the route reported here related to a two-phase reaction system. Primary ZnO particles were generated in aqueous phase and spontaneously capped by dissolved thiol molecules. When a critical size was reached, the thiol-capped particles transferred from aqueous to thiol phase, and their growth was stopped there. After calcining the thiol-capped precursor particles, ZnO nanoparticles were obtained. The derived ZnO nanocrystallines were characterized with X-ray diffraction, energy dispersion X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy techniques.

Abstract:Copper sulfide (CuS) nanocrystals with special morphologies, such as flower- and trepang-like morphology have been successfully synthesized via a simple and convenient solution route at low temperature from shuttle-like CuO crystals. The morphology of the products can be easily controlled by choosing appropriate solvent as the reaction medium. Studies found that the copper source and reaction time also have important influence on the morphology of the final products.

Abstract:The development of solvent-free techniques for nanoparticles synthesis is one of the challenges of Green chemistry. In this work, the principled opportunity to obtain copper-containing nanosized particles without use of any solvents was shown. The copper complexes were prepared as precursors by the melting-assisted solvent-free synthesis. The formation of tetra(imidazole)copper(II) nitrate complex was confirmed by XRD, elemental analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. It was noted that their thermal decomposition occurs in two stages: (I) the low-temperature step may be related to redox interaction between organic ligands and nitrate-anions; (II) the high-temperature step may be related to the oxidation of the products of incomplete imidazole decomposition. TEM and XRD studies of solid products of complex combustion have shown that they are oxides with particle size less than 40 nm. Thus, the combustion of [Cu(Im)4](NO3)2 complex under air can be considered as a new approach to prepare nanosized particles of copper oxides without the use of solvents.

Abstract:Cu(OH)2 nanowires have been synthesized by anodic oxidation of copper through a simple electrolysis process employing ionic liquid as an electrolyte. Controlling the electrochemical conditions can qualitatively modulate the lengths, amounts, and shapes of Cu(OH)2 nanostructures. A rational mechanism based on coordination self-assembly and oriented attachment is proposed for the selective formation of the polycrystalline Cu(OH)2 nanowires. In addition, the FeOOH nanoribbons, Ni(OH)2 nanosheets, and ZnO nanospheres were also synthesized by this route, indicative of the universality of the electrochemical route presented herein. The morphologies and structures of the synthesized nanostructures have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), and thermogravimetric (TG).

Abstract:Herein we describe an alternative strategy to achieve the preparation of nanoscale Cu3N. Copper(II) oxide/hydroxide nanopowder precursors were successfully fabricated by solution methods. Ammonolysis of the oxidic precursors can be achieved essentially pseudomorphically to produce either unsupported or supported nanoparticles of the nitride. Hence, Cu3N particles with diverse morphologies were synthesized from oxygen-containing precursors in two-step processes combining solvothermal and solid-gas ammonolysis stages. The single-phase hydroxochloride precursor, Cu2(OH)3Cl was prepared by solution-state synthesis from CuCl2·2H2O and urea, crystallising with the atacamite structure. Alternative precursors, CuO and Cu(OH)2, were obtained after subsequent treatment of Cu2(OH)3Cl with NaOH solution. Cu3N, in the form of micro- and nanorods, was the sole product formed from ammonolysis using either CuO or Cu(OH)2. Conversely, the ammonolysis of dicopper trihydroxide chloride resulted in two-phase mixtures of Cu3N and the monoamine, Cu(NH3)Cl under similar experimental conditions. Importantly, this pathway is applicable to afford composite materials by incorporating substrates or matrices that are resistant to ammoniation at relatively low temperatures (ca. 300 °C). We present preliminary evidence that Cu3N/SiO2 nanocomposites (up to ca. 5 wt.% Cu3N supported on SiO2) could be prepared from CuCl2·2H2O and urea starting materials following similar reaction steps. Evidence suggests that in this case Cu3N nanoparticles are confined within the porous SiO2 matrix.

Abstract:CuInS2 nanocrystals were synthesized by one-pot thermolysis of a mixture solution of metal chlorides, 1-dodecanethiol (DT) and oleic acid in noncoordinating solvent 1-octadecene. Interestingly, in this synthesis, different structures and shapes were obtained by simply varying the dosage of DT. At a low dosage of DT, wurtzite nanoplates formed in the initial reaction stage and then they further grew to nanoplates with wurtzite-zincblende polytypism as the reaction proceeded. On the contrary, a high dosage of DT produced zincblende nanoparticles. The formation processes of nanoplates and nanoparticles were studied and a growth mechanism was proposed. Our research will aid in solution-synthesis of ternary chalcogenide nanocrystals and the development of their optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:A solution-phase route has been developed for the synthesis of single-crystal CuO nanoribbons with widths of 10−80 nm, thicknesses of 5−20 nm, and lengths ranging from several hundred nanometers to several micrometers and for nanorings with diameters of 100−300 nm. The CuO nanoribbons and nanorings were fabricated by the reaction of CuCl2 and NaOH solutions with sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS). The as-synthesized products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), revealing that CuO nanoribbons and nanorings had single-crystal monoclinic structures and nanorings were closed but were not the simple superposition of two ends of the nanoribbons. Solvent-Mediated Hetero/Homo-Phase Crystallization of Copper Nanoclusters and Superatomic Kernel-Related NIR Phosphorescence

Abstract:Atomically precise superatomic copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) have been the subject of immense interest for their intriguing structures and diverse properties; nonetheless, the variable oxidation state of copper ions and complex solvation effects in wet synthesis systems pose significant challenges for comprehending their synthesis and crystallization mechanism. Herein, we present a solvent-mediated approach for the synthesis of two Cu NCs, namely, superatomic Cu26 and pure-Cu(I) Cu16. They initially formed as a hetero-phase and then separated as a homo-phase via modulating binary solvent composition. In situ UV/vis absorption and electrospray ionization mass spectra revealed that the solvent-mediated assembly was determined to be the underlying mechanism of hetero/homo-phase crystallization. Cu26 is a 2-electron superatom with a kernel-shell structure that includes a [Cu20Se12]4- shell and [Cu6]4+ kernel, containing two 1S jellium electrons. Conversely, Cu16 is a pure-Cu(I) Cu/Se nanocluster that features a [Cu16Se6]4+ core protected by extra dimercaptomaleonitrile ligands. Remarkably, Cu26 exhibits unique near-infrared phosphorescence (NIR PH) at 933 nm due to the presence of a superatomic kernel-related charge transfer state (3MM(Cu)CT). Overall, this work not only showcases the hetero/homo-phase crystallization of Cu NCs driven by a solvent-mediated assembly mechanism but also enables the rare occurrence of NIR PH within the 2-electron copper superatom family.

Abstract:Highly uniform Cu2S nanocrystals with controllable sizes and shapes (circular and elongated) have been synthesized through a novel water-oil interface confined reaction. They can self-assemble into highly ordered multilayer superlattices. By controlling the size and shape of building block nanocrystals, the packing symmetry of the superlattice can be engineered. For circular nanocrystals, both fcc and hcp multilayer superlattices are found in the sample. For elongated nanocrystals, they can also generate a close-packed layer and further stack into a multilayer superlattice. The dipole moment of the inner nanocrystals is useful for their stacking. This work provides a simple bottom-up approach to integrate nanocrystals, as well as to adjust the packing symmetry of the final superlattice, which may have potential applications for nanomaterials and nanodevices in the future.

Abstract:In the present report, CuO, Cu2O and Cu have been successfully synthesized through a facile, one‐step hydrothermal method at a relative low temperature by controlling only the concentration of citric acid. Compared with other synthetic methods, the present method is mild, high‐efficient and nontoxic. The crystal structure and morphology of the as prepared samples were characterized by X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The mechanism for the crystal phase and morphological changes with different citric acid concentrations were discussed. The possible reaction process of the synthesis was also studied on the basis of the experimental results. We hope that this facile, one‐step hydrothermal method could be used in controlling synthesis of other metals and metal oxides under appropriate experimental conditions.
