Abstract:An efficient process based on the gold-catalyzed redox reaction has been developed to oxidize 1,2-diarylacetylene or ynamide to 1,2-diaryldiketone or α-keto imide respectively. This process can tolerate a variety of functional groups and affords 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds in excellent yields under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract:Gold(III) chloride catalyzed direct amination of arenes with azodicarboxylates was developed. The new catalytic system was active to a broad range of substrates, and the reaction was carried out under mild conditions. It represents the first catalytic system for the direct amination of electron-deficient arenes with azodicarboxylates to the best of our knowledge. This reaction provides an important approach for the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds in pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

Abstract:We discovered a cooperative gold/silver catalysis mechanism in the oxidative cross-coupling reaction between 1,2,4,5-tetrafluorobenzene and N-TIPS-indole, using DFT calculations. A silver(I)-catalyzed CMD mechanism is responsible for the C-H activation of 1,2,4,5-tetrafluorobenzene, and C-H acidity determines the chemoselectivity. A gold(III)-catalyzed S(E)2Ar mechanism is responsible for the C3-H activation of N-TIPS-indole, and arene nucleophilicity determines the chemo- and regioselectivity. The orthogonal chemoselectivity control provides a mechanistic guide for dual C-H activation reactions.

Abstract:The gold-catalyzed, iodine(III)-mediated direct oxidative acyloxylation of the C(sp(3))-H bonds of methyl sulfides for the synthesis of various alpha-thioaryl and alpha-thioalkyl ester derivatives was discovered. Bis(acyloxy)iodobenzene proved to be an efficient reagent to activate the sulfur atom as an in situ directing group for alpha-C(sp(3))-H functionalization. The attractive features of this protocol include short reaction times, low catalyst loading, and in situ activation of adjacent C(sp(3))-H bonds of the sulfur atom.

Abstract:A regioselective direct arylation of arenes and olefins at the ortho position is reported. The key to the high selectivity is the appropriate choice of diaryliodonium salts as the arylating reagent in the presence of a cationic iridium(III) catalyst. The coordination of the metal with an oxygen atom or a nitrogen atom and subsequent C-H activation allows for direct arylation with coupling partners. This reaction proceeds under mild reaction conditions and with a high tolerance of various functional groups including many halide functional groups.

Abstract:An efficient procedure for the direct C–H arylation of electron-poor aromatics such as pyrazine and pyridine with aryl bomides is described. In the presence of catalytic amount of Cy3PAuCl and with the use of t-BuOK as base, pyrazine undergoes the direct C–H arylation with aryl bromides at 100°C, and the yields of the arylated products depend on the nature of aryl bromides. In the cases of electron-rich aryl bromides used, the arylated pyrazines can be obtained in good to high yields. For electron-poor aryl bromides, the addition of AgBF4 is the crucial point to accelerate the coupling reaction to give the arylated products in moderate yields. Pyridine also reacts with electron-rich aryl bromides catalyzed by Cy3PAuCl to give a mixture of arylated regioisomers in moderate yield. However, in order to realize the direct C–H arylation of pyridine with electron-poor aryl bromides, the addition of silver salt as additive and a milder reaction temperature (60°C) are required.

Abstract:Metathesis reactions represent powerful synthetic tools that have been used in a number of fields from the synthesis of natural product to functional material preparation. However, the C-H metathesis reaction is extremely rare. Herein, we report the first Pd(II)-catalyzed C-H iodination of arenes using 2-nitrophenyl iodides as the mild iodinating reagents via a formal metathesis reaction. Unusual C-I bond formation occurred with aryl iodides in preference to competing C-C coupling in this reaction. Assisted by aliphatic carboxyl directing groups, a range of hydrocinnamic acids and related arenes could be selectively iodinated at either meta- or ortho-positions of the phenyl ring. Remote diastereoselective C-H activation was also promising. This method might unfold a novel approach to iodinate challenging substrates. [GRAPHICS]

Abstract:An efficient and mild Ir(III)-catalyzed, chelation assisted C-H alkynylation of arenes has been developed using hypervalent iodine alkynes as alkynylating reagents. A broad scope of N-phenyl-2-aminopyridines and 2-phenoxypyridines has been established as effective substrates for this C-H functionalization and the desired alkynylated products were isolated in moderate to high yields.

Abstract:An effective method has been developed for Rh(III)-catalyzed direct vinylation of arenes to give functionalized styrenes, using vinyltriethoxysilane as a convenient and inexpensive vinyl source. A wide variety of substrates, including 1-aryl-2-pyrrolidinones, anilines, benzamides and ketones, were compatible with this reaction. Moreover, this method can be applied to the two-step synthesis of functionalized indoles. Mechanistic investigation reveals that the reaction probably proceeds through an oxidative Heck/desilylation pathway.

Abstract:The regioselectivity of C-H functionalization is commonly achieved by directing groups, electronic factors, or steric hindrance, which facilitate the identification of reaction sites. However, such strategies are less effective for reactants such as simple monofluoroarenes due to their relatively low reactivity and the modest steric demands of the fluorine atom. Herein, we present an undirected gold-catalyzed para-C-H arylation of a wide array of monofluoroarenes using air-stable aryl silanes and germanes at room temperature. A high para-regioselectivity (up to 98 : 2) can be realized by utilizing a dinuclear dppm(AuOTs)2 (dppm=bis(diphenylphosphino)methane) as the catalyst and hexafluorobenzene as the solvent. This provides a general and practical protocol for the concise construction of structurally diverse para-arylated monofluoroarenes through C-H activation manner. It features excellent functional group tolerance and a broad substrate scope (>80 examples). Besides, this strategy is also robust for other simple monosubstituted arenes and heteroarenes. Our mechanistic studies and theoretical calculations suggest that para-C-H selectivity arises from highly electrophilic and structurally flexible dinuclear Ar-Au(III)-Au(I) species, coupled with noncovalent interaction induced by hexafluorobenzene.
